I try to go to Brick's Bar & Grill most of the time when I go downtown Cedar Rapids, for their great rotating selection of craft beer and for their delicious burnt ends. I went there on Saint Patrick's Day this year, and it was loud and packed full of people, but very fun. I also went to Brick's the other day with some friends and we drank some great beer at the bar. Almost every time I have gone to visit Brick's Bar & Grill, it's been very busy, but still a good time. The bartenders are always very kind and knowledgeable about what they have on tap. Additionally, the lighting inside Brick's is always dim and calming. I loved the white tiny lights that they put up for decoration. I worked at this location when it was a different bar. Same owner of the building as now however. But Bricks is independent from the building owner, and quite frankly, they have slowly thrived in that relationship (yep, this is about the best thing I can say about my former employer and jackadz owner, except that he is still in buisness and now owns several buildings in CR but is still the mizerly JA that is upset with the city all the time and other undesirable qualities - in any case... moving on). Bricks suffers from the fact that it is a relatively small venue which is not able to pay its people like some other more popular places. Yet the kitchen and bar equipment (at least from when I worked there, and from what I've seen in visits since then), are very respectable. Sight line issues become a problem when the bartender or any waitress who hangs out at the bar needs to respond to an "order up" (something that should be taken care of by a cell phone app if it isn't already). In any case, they continue to suffer from a high turn over of bar, kitchen and wait-staff (OK.. everyone knows these post COVID days have these issues, but I am talking from the 1995 perspective and onward, where it was still difficult to maintain good staff in the smallish venue then known as Kurtz, and later known as Bricks). The interior is quite compelling with brick sidewalls with many old signs decorating (fewer than what once decorated Kurtz). The new management has concentrated on adding taps and glass front coolers (where once were solid front coolers housing all of the import beer varieties - over 100 at the zenith). Gone from the menu are the feature items like the Pachyderm (a huge 1/2 lb hamburger with cream cheese, green peppers, and black olives - along with Lettuce, onion, tomato, pickle, etc if you wanted it), that marvelous flame grilled non-breaded tenderloin, and any of the pizzas they once served (I believe that those incredible pizza ovens that once used to be installed at this location, were mostly out of service with no parts available and moved to the building owner's storage facility, or at least upstairs of the Tycoon/Fat Wally's.. who knows where that pack rat stuffed them away). BUT with the proper chefs, the kitchen should be able to put out some decent BBQ and other snacks. Even as "Bricks" they have outlasted many of their local competitors (aka "Grinnin Goose" "White Star" etc.). And yet they are still the little unknown place along 2nd Ave near the RR tracks. Kudos to them and their somewhat hipster vibe. read more

Stopped here while passing through Iowa - a gret find! Brick's is on a stretch of 2nd Avenue which features several pubs/bars/brewhouses, and we picked it randomly. It was 8 pm on a Tuesday - not much of a crowd at all. No minors are allowed after 9 pm, and at 8 pm everyone seemed of age except a teen with parents. There was a large group that looked to be straight from the office, a couple couples, and some hockey fans watching playoff games on the big screens. I wouldn't bring little kids here at any hour, out of respect for the adults who want an adult atmosphere. Music was hip-hop and pop, but that may have been patrons' choices on the jukebox. The beer selection is exceptional: over 60 choices, many of them local. The Arms Race Pale Ale by Big Grove Brewery was perfect. Food was more than adequate, not exceptional: generous portions of fries with big burgers and sandwiches. Not a lot of light choices, which is not surprising in a bar/grill atmosphere. Staff was attentive, patient and helpful. Prices for beer and food were completely in line with expectations. Sodas were $2.50, which seemed a bit high to me, but I guess they've got to make some money off the non-drinkers. I'd recommend Brick's to anyone visiting Cedar Rapids. Next time I'll check out other places on the street too - it's a cool neighborhood. read more

The wife craved a burger. She got the burger. I got the candied pulled pork with a Sriracha and maple glaze. She asked for her burger well done (hates any pink). There was pink. Whoever wrote the review about this place having amazing bbq had the wrong place. There were smoked wings, but they were just ok. No greeting meant we kind of wandered in the dark noise wondering where to sit. The waitress brought us something we didn't order twice, and ordering was very confusing somehow. Had a local beer, it was good. It's a small place, but the upstairs was pretty cool. Got to watch tv, and the bench wasn't too low or worn out. Never used the bathroom, so can't speak to that. Parked in the garage next to it, which is free for the first hour and 0.75 for the hour after that...info that would've been helpful when we were driving around the surface streets and calling them for parking suggestions. Don't walk under the tree out front, it's full of birds, and bird crap cakes the ground below. It's just a bar with some bar food. read more

I was not impressed with the LACK of COVID precautions in this business... NOT ONE employee was wearing a mask. Our waitress had no mask on, was not at ALL distanced when engaging with us, and her bare hands were in our food when delivered. The fries were served cold. I read on their website that EVERY employee is required to be knowledgeable with beer because they have 60 beers on tap. Sounded great! I ordered a beer off their own menu called Orange Dream Avalanche...and received an "Orange Dream" mixed cocktail. They seemed confused by my order. I had to send it back to get the correct drink. Decent service, nice bartenders. Was here for opening night NFL on a Thursday so somewhat crowded and loud. Reason for 4 stars is a Keri's Al preference on their wings which apparently ALWAYS come naked. They have various sauces but they're not baked and spread on, you have to add the sauce yourself so you have to dip into the sauce and also dip into blue cheese or ranch dressing. Bricks overcharged my credit card, inflating their tip. After 6 weeks of calls trying to reach a manager, and leaving 4 messages ) I finally reached a manager who explained "they lost the slip and so normally charge 20% tip." This practice is ILLEGAL. If you have a sign up that says you'll charge a tip if I forget to close my tab, fine. But you ran my card, and I left a cash tip. You're stealing, Bricks. This manager agreed to cover my whole tab for my troubles (only 2 drinks) via a check in the mail refund. I got a check, surprisingly, for an amount way less than agreed upon, made out to an intentionally vulgar misspelling of my name. Like grade school childish (which is probably when this guy dropped out of school). Keep your couple bucks. VISA will cover my end after the fraud report. read more

This bar has changed hands many times in the last 5 or 6 years so hopefully there will be some stability with the current owners. A very long and narrow space about the width of three bowling lanes, however it has character. It can get as loud as a bowling ally too. I'm guessing the kitchen is pretty limited o space as it always seems to be a long wait for your food order. We had lunch on Saturday and despite a fairly small crowd, it still took quite a while to get our food. The food has always been pretty good here.
