    Breakfast Burrito
    Megan W.

I came here today (Tuesday) around 11:15, I order a large strawberry iced matcha with lite ice and almond milk, and the breakfast burrito in a whole wheat wrap. The cafe was pretty full inside but the patio out back was relatively empty, overall I could see this place getting busy but they do have a lot of seating. There was a sign that said no laptops at the tables which seems unfortunate cause this would be a great place to work for an hour or two. There were lots of staff and everything was kept really clean, seemed like a really great place to take kids, they had lots of different things set up just for children. There was lots of staff and everyone seemed nice but busy. The pastry's didn't look as tempting as I had hoped, however my matcha was really good and did in fact taste like strawberry once I was able to mix it up. The breakfast burrito was also really good, just beware there is a kick from the Sriracha mayo. I ended up waiting about 5-10 minutes to get my food so also very quick. Over all a 4/5 because there wasn't any stand out food.

Maybe I'm not a coffee shop girly and I need to be converted to one but I was not the biggest fan of this place unfortunately. Although everything was very cute and nice, the food and drinks were also extremely expensive. For 2 items I paid around $17 which is a little insane if you ask me. The line did go by very quickly and all the service people were very nice. - Smoked Salmon Croissant Sandwich - This was surprisingly very filling. The croissant was very crispy which I liked. I thought everything in the sandwich actually went very well together and I liked how the cream cheese was not very overwhelming and very fresh. - Matcha Iced Latte - I'm not going to lie, this was a bit disappointing. The matcha flavor seemed very watered down and the milk flavor didn't really come through. I did appreciate that I told them I only wanted 4 ice cubes and they really only gave me 4 ice cubes. Can't say any of the food really impressed me, so not sure if I would come back again. Maybe with friends in a social setting but not alone.

The croissant in the smoked salmon croissant was really tasty. Definitely not stale or soggy - had a lot of crisp and buttery flavor on the outside. Lemon poppy muffin was good, nice crusty top, and pretty large for its price, especially for Manhattan. Liked the little backyard area. Felt like I was sitting in someone else's yard haha.

I've had Black Star Bakery & Cafe on my list to try for a while and finally popped in today as I was walking by and craving a drink. The case of pastries looked scrumptious! We ordered a matcha lemonade and a dirty chai. I have never had a matcha lemonade before but it was the perfect balance of sweet and earthy! I already can't wait to get another. My boyfriend liked the dirty chai and as we were leaving someone walked in and said it's their favorite place for chai, so that was a great endorsement to hear after ordering it! There is no WiFi and laptops aren't allowed at the tables- just at the two stools at the front bar. I was pleasantly surprised that they had an outdoor area in the back as well, but didn't have time to check that out. Im excited to go back and try more things!

Hot Apple Cider. 2 stars. IG: @amei.eats

(Overall: 57% | F) - While I did add cinnamon to the Hot Apple Cider, they added so much that it felt like I was participating in the cinnamon challenge. Despite ordering it hot, it was lukewarm at best if I was being generous. On top of this, perhaps my vibe was off but I particularly did not like the fact that the cashier was noticeably offputting while I was ordering but friendly to the person before and after as if I should have not visited. The bakery is very busy and from this data point, I don't see why. IG: @amei.eats

My roommate recommended I try their breakfast burrito and now it's my second time coming and I can't wait to come back. Delicious, fresh ingredients, really friendly staff, chill calming vibes in the restaurant. The kind of burrito you can destroy in 3 minutes because it's so good. Their Nutella croissant is also unreal. Highly recommend!!

I snagged a great cold brew and za'atar croissant one Monday morning. I was very enticed by the breakfast sandwiches, but I was in a rush, and the line was quite busy. I was kind of surprised people were calling in orders. It made everything go a lot slower, it seemed (though maybe that was particularly painful because I was already in a rush). There's an outside patio but also plenty of seating in the street under a covered area. There's also a pleasant bench right in the front. Lots of pastries to choose from and some unique combinations. I brought home a nutella and almond croissant to my partner, too, and he was very pleased. The milks including milk substitutes are available toward the front.

Taken 04/05/21 I love this place a little over a half mile walk from my apartment.

Black Star Bakery Cafe is still Five Stars. You can read my last review and add that I love the seating in the outside patio in the back. They have a play house for children and umbrellas for shade. It was a beautiful day today to sit outside. I purchased a Spinach Ricotta Danish $4.30 with tax. It was so delicious I'm sure I will get it again. The line gets long but it moves quickly. Employees are professional, but not overly friendly. They keep the baked goods coming from the oven. I'm definitely a fan! PS They now have Cronuts.

It's a cute place to go for coffee and treats. It looks small but they do have seating indoors and they also have a little patio area and also outdoor seating in the front. They are dog friendly as well. I tried the chai latte and it was so good. They do have options for non-dairy milks. Also they did have other options for food aside from baked goods. I was able to sit in their patio and it was really nice to be there and nicely decorated. Definitely stop by this place if you have a chance

Avocado Toast, Egg & Cheese w/ Prosciutto Croissant Sandwich

I LOVE BREAKFAST SANDWICHES. And Black Star delivered on it. I got myself a croissant egg, prosciutto, and cheese sandwich. The sandwich itself was disappointingly small, but maybe it only felt that way because it was so good. The croissant was so flaky and warm and filled my breakfast sandwich heart. I also ordered the chai tea latte, which was one of the tastiest I've ever had. I will say that it was somewhat thicker than a usual latte. That, combined with the fact that extra cinnamon was added to it, made it seem more like a dessert than a drink. BUT it was a very good one and I'd literally go back just to get it. They also had a huge variety of pastries. We tried three of them- the strawberry donut hole, chocolate rugelach, and everything croissant. All of them seemed fresh, and the croissant was flaky even when we ate it hours later. What I will say is that my aunt and I ate here in person. The music in the cafe was insanely loud-- so loud that we couldn't hear each other speak. The menu placement was also a bit strange in that it was there when we walked in, then the cashier was a bit away from the menu. I...do not have a good memory. I think about what I want to get and then as soon as it's my turn to order, I immediately forget. So the issue here was that because each item had a long and/or special name, it was hard for me to remember what I had wanted to get. I'd love if there were a mini menu right in front of the cashier so I could look down to remind myself what I wanted. These are super small things though, and I definitely see myself coming back!

    Many delicious pastries

When I moved to the UES, I was worried finding a new local roaster. I've had bad experiences where the beans are too oily or something is off that messes with my usually grind size/extraction time. No issues with Oslo's beans. 2. They actually know how to make a proper americano. Every coffee shop takes a standard cup, puts in the espresso shot, and then fills hot water to the brim of the cup. This destroys the flavor of the espresso. You end up with hot water that tastes slightly like coffee. Oslo chooses quality over quantity. They don't fill the water up to the brim, so you have a cup with 2/3 of liquid; however, this is a proper americano. You can taste the difference. At other shops, I just get drip coffee because they don't know what they're doing. Oslo knows what they're doing. That's why I come here.

Unfortunately, it was totally bland and not large at all. The side sauce added nothing and over 30$ with tax/tip. For entrees, we shared the lobster pasta and the guazzetto di Pesci. The pasta was good. Reasonable amount of pasta but we would have liked some more chunks of lobster for the price. I thought the sauce was only ok but my girlfriend liked it. The guazzetto di Pesci was only fair. The sauce was lacking flavor. They did bring out complimentary bread, which was appreciated, though it felt like something that should be standard rather than a highlight. One item someone in our group wanted -- the octopus burger -- was unfortunately unavailable, which was disappointing, especially given that it was brunch and still relatively early in the day. That said, the dishes we did order were good and well prepared. The space itself is nice: the front functions as a cute coffee shop, while the back has tables for sit-down dining. Because of that setup, the vibe feels more casual, but the menu offers solid options. Overall, it was a good experience, just not a great one -- a decent brunch spot, but nothing that blew us away.
