Ok Tuesday's here are POPPIN- like long ass line, feels like a fri/sat night, but no B it's just the beginning of the week and Blackbird finds a way to make you feel like you're home free! Ahhhhhhmazing music, and honestly it's a mystery to me how they get so many people out on a Tuesday night(esp in my age range since we got work the next day and uhhh were usually in bed by 10 pm lol) but these people make it happen! I honestly used to go here a lot more back in the day before they remodeled it, it was the place I started at and ended at, no questions asked butttt at least for Friday's/Saturday's now, it's my go to for the "after party". I've noticed that their best music/dj is on after 1 am. It's so good at that time that you forget your feet hurt from dancing on your heels for 3 hours straight and somehow manage to get out at like 4 am feeling like you just had one of the best nights of your life/a pretty good leg work out lol it's impossible to not dance here. They got the best hip hop hits, from today and 2000s and reaaaaal late they put in some salsa/reggaeton goodies. I love coming here! The drinks are amazing, love egg white based drinks and they have various options here for it. The bar tenders don't skimp out on the alcohol so it's worth spending money on alcohol here. Staff members are quick and I usually don't have a problem getting someones attention here. The bar does get packed but with great company time goes by and the wait times don't feel like forever. They sometimes have bands playing in the back, plus ample space to move around or to chill. What an amazing addition to Miami's craft cocktail scene. And before you start thinking, "ugh, craft cocktails, that pretentious stuff isn't for me," I'm here to report that Blackbird is completely devoid of any attitude or that pompous sort of inclination a highly skilled bartender might have. The cocktail menu features a number of serious choices featuring any kind of spirit base you might be after. Whether it's a vodka drink or something with mezcal, there's a line-up of stellar options. If you're put off by slightly esoteric cocktail ingredients, rest assured, they've got Corona in the house. As for the drink prices, I paid $10 for a damn good margarita with a touch of mezcal. Just to give you an idea, the Irish bar scandal down the street charged $15 for a vodka tonic. GTFO. Happy hour is from 3-7 and everything on the menu is 2 for 1. So whether you want that Mexican beer or a fancy drink, 2 for 1, baby. Plus, they're open until 5, so it's a great nightcap destination once your blue suede shoes need a break. It came as no surprise to learn the owners of Purdy Lounge put this place together. After all, that dimly lit, come-as-you-are vibe carries forward and the coolness it oozes makes you feel right at home in the comfort of this living room feeling bar. It's cozy but spacious and there's a dedicated DJ area should you choose to shake your rump. Pool table, yep. Board games, yep. Roomy banquettes to pile in with your besties, yep. I love that there's no smoking indoors too. Gone are the days when I have to rush my favorite tops to the dry cleaners after a night at the bar. For the nicotine inclined, there's an outdoor area where you can enjoy your habit. And in a few weeks (months?) time, they'll be adding a bunch of touches to the outdoor space to make it live music and hang-out friendly. The owners must be fans of Portlandia, because the overarching theme here is "put a bird on it." No really. Tables? Put a bird on it. Walls? Put a bird on it. Menus, neon sign. Birdsbirdsbirds! Welcome to the neighborhood! I'll be the first to admit I don't always do so well with change. When I learned Transit was closing only to reopen under new management, I was a bit concerned that it would mean huge changes, none of which would be conducive to a laidback place to spend an evening in Brickell. Luckily, Blackbird Ordinary is a vast improvement over the old location! I'm not quite sure if they've even officially announced they're open yet although our server says they've been there since around last Thursday (roughly Dec. 22nd). The menus are still being printed, along with the food lists. Meanwhile the decrepit looking space has gotten a much needed overhaul. Lining the wall where run down booths used to sit lies comfortable looking wood and mirrors. The plain and dirty booths have been replaced with AstroTurf, cute bird info collages, and each table has it's own little herb pot set into the table (Mint, basil, etc.). A hand stenciled wall painted with blackbirds and a dj booth replaces the old stage where Transit used to host burlesque shows and karaoke nights. The pool table is still present in the back corner, and now there is a bookcase lined with an assortment of boardgames towards the back. The ladies bathroom (no clue about the men's) is a significant improvement too in cleanliness and visual appeal, complete with black tile, a chandelier and cutesy blackbird wallpaper. The night we were in the waitress was kind enough to run through their beer offerings (since the menus aren't in yet), and I was thrilled to learn they carried La Fin do Monde. Thrilled turned to downright ecstatic when I got my bill and learned it was only $6.50, a pretty reasonable price by usual Miami bar standards (certain other places in the area tend to charge $9 for far more generic and watery beers), especially considering it was a 9%. Since most of Brickell probably doesn't know they've opened, it wasn't too packed yet which was nice because it meant a decibel level reasonable for actually holding a conversation. We also had a blast with the Jenga knockoff (or apparently British version of the game), Jumbling Tower. The music playing was also nice departure from what had previously been played there, far more indie with a few classic 80s and 90s hits. Although not sure how that will change when the dj is present there. All in all much improved spot that is far more cozy and far less dive. Can't wait to see what they'll bring to the area as the really get underway, but I'm definitely looking forward to checking them out again soon! P.S. If you're wondering about the name, my friend supplied us with the useful and random knowledge that "Ordinary" was an Old English name for tavern or pub! read more

Everytime I go to blackbird it is a great time filled with great staff and people who are all having fun.

I was a STAUNCH supporter of Transit Lounge. I mean, I used to be there just about every weekend. Transit was one of those places that, when you asked yourself, "Where should I go tonight?" always came to mind first. Transit was Transit. Transit was a staple. Like popcorn at a movie. Like mustard on a hot dog. The proverbial cheese to Miami's macaroni. (Damn you, Juno!) So when it closed down, I was pretty freaking heartbroken. I didn't expect to like whatever opened in its place. Just out of spite. Out of defense for a fallen comrade. Man, oh, man, did I jump the gun. Purdy's ownership group --- whatever it's called --- took Transit, turned it on its head, and birthed its very own little Gattaca-era Ethan Hawke. Let me explain. You see, it wouldn't be the same if perfection had taken Transit's place because, let's face it, Transit was anything but. In fact, oftentimes, it was a downright hole, but that wonderful imperfection was part of its charm. So you don't want a pre-accident Jude Law walking through the door and taking its place; you want a little engine that could. You want to see chinks in the armor. You want to see cracks in the facade. Why? Because imperfection, as our protagonist failed to understand, allows for comfort, and comfort is all anyone is seeking on a Friday or Saturday night. What Blackbird did was make the broken clock work more than twice in a day without adding any fancy bells and whistles, without decking the place out with a runway or a giant pearl hanging from the ceiling or seizure-inducing lighting or lasers or awful club mixes or God knows what else: all of which have entrenched themselves in the Miami club/bar scene. It remodeled with a totally cool and minimalistic black and red motif that gives the place a darker, more subdued feel. Ownership replaced the restaurant-style seating and replaced it with wrap-around booths that allow for 1) more people, and 2) a closer, more intimate experience. Best part of the seating? The tables and how each one has an herb plant just sitting calmly amidst the debauchery. It's such a beautiful contrast, such a simple idea, that I can't believe I'd never seen it before. The rear, which before was covered in graffiti and always featured some sort of live DJ, was painted grey and is now a very simple, very cool, very laid back respite from the louder inside. In other words, it's a break from the thud of an oft-loud Miami landscape. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the bathrooms. Now ladies, I can't speak to your side of the lavatory universe, but the men's room at Transit was abysmal. It felt like you were going to walk out with a disease. Ownership replaced the faulty sink, fixed all the little wayward leaks that made it so your foot would sink into about half an inch of water, and tiled the wall with a tiny checkerboard panel. You have no idea how important bathrooms are to a mild germaphobe like me. You have no idea how happy this makes me. Blackbird took an already good idea and made it better. Like stuffed-crust pizza. All it needed was that little extra ingredient, that little extra attention to detail, to totally overhaul your perception of what works and what doesn't, to remind you that imperfection is perfect, to illustrate that the idealized (those boring carbon copies in Gattaca) is no match for the real (a wonderfully deep, extraordinarily flawed, intrinsically interesting Vincent Freeman). I'm deeply concerned for this place. Not because it isn't any good, but because it's just THAT good. It's proximity to Mary Brickell Village and the throngs of douchey characters that haunt it make Blackbird highly susceptible to being sucked into a galaxy of chongas forever and ever. But until then, I will enjoy this little magical place and its quirks for all that it's worth. Blackbird is the kind of place to chill. Gentleman, if you're looking to fist pump and relentlessly hit on girls, this may not be the place for you. Ladies, if playing Battleship is not your idea of fun well, then, I'm sorry. Everyone else, rejoice. First, choose a drink from it's beautifuly curated menu of craft cocktails. Second, grab a couple of board games from the game shelf by the rear end of the bar. (Yes, you read that correctly--they have a shelf of board games!) Third, mark your territory at one of the booths with your group of friends and prepare yourself for a grand ol' time. I don't know of a whole lot of places aside from my own home where it's acceptable and appropriate to play a rowdy game of alcohol-impaired Jenga. Want to play Dominoes? Yea, they have that, too. If your music taste is anything like mine--which is an eclectic mix of anything from 80's pop to alternative rock to 90's hip hop--you will be in your zone here. This is a bit lengthy! Sorry! I've been here twice so far. Once because DJ Questlove from The Roots was the guest DJ and the second time was just to chill with some friends. Few things I like about this place. No cover fee! How great is that? No cover fee all night. The line might get kind of long but don't let it scare you! It moves pretty quickly. I got in line on a Friday night after midnight, maybe around 12:30 or so and I waited about 10 minutes. Dress code isn't super strict. It is casual but don't expect to get in if you show up in sandals and sweats, you feeeels me? Now the crowd. Some people get inside and they're like, "OMG it's so crowded! Let's leave blah blah blah". No worries! There's an outside patio! And honestly, as hot and steamy it gets in the building itself, the outside patio is your best option, lol. There's also a pool table (inside), a ping pong table (outside), and they have regular board games for the lounge-y area inside (Connect 4, Jenga, Dominoes, etc). I personally love the music here. They throw it back REALLY far sometimes and you just want to do the Charleston lol but they play the new stuff too. Definitely expect Jump On it, Poison, This is How We Do It, etc etc. Drinks are kind of expensive, but what do you expect? No cover fee ... they gotta make their money somehow! Their long islands and specialty drinks are usually strong . . but for some reason, depending on the bartender, they'll give you different-sized cups, one bigger than the other. Same price though :( so they should be a bit more consistent with that. Last thing is parking! Don't forget this is Brickell. Parking around there is a bit crazy so I suggest parking 2 to 3 blocks away and walking. That's all, folks! read more

When Transit closed down, I was like as livid as a Black Panther finding out the fact that he's of around 20% European ancestry. African Americans don't know that shit, but Wesley Snipes is probably the only black American without a white great great great great grandfather. It's not that Transit was some amazing place where dreams were realized and legends were born. It was a shitty dive with enough smoke to bring back Truth PSAs. Transit's redeeming quality was the live music and cheap drink prices. I liked Transit, but it's like the place was run by a retarded mushroom. Every time I left that place I was like, "great, now I have to wash my jeans even though I've only worn them 5 days in a row." The smoke smell stuck to you viciously and the assholes running the place couldn't figure out that installing smoke filters in the place would be a good investment, or having people smoke in the outdoor area, because there's a fucking outdoor area, would be a cheaper alternative. Blackbird Ordinary does this right, because I was there recently on a Friday night and there was nary a bit of smoke to be found. Also, they kept the board games and shit. I wish more places would do that. There's no better way of breaking the ice with a fine-ass honey than going up to her carrying a box and saying, "sup girl, wanna play Operation?" She'll love that shit, especially if she's a doctor or med student because it'll let her go on about her boring-ass career and her crushing student debt. In place of the worn booths they used to have they replaced them with these nice, padded leather booths. That's a good thing, because the old booths were awful. You sat in those things and it felt like you were being massaged by a Somalian pirate. God damn, it's amazing that we have pirates. Sure, it's not as romanticized as the pirates of the 18th and 17th century because instead of ornate motherfuckers with parrots we just having a bunch of starving black guys and tiny Filipinos, but it's still badass that there are dudes hijacking shit on the high seas. Outside they've got a ping pong table and the stage which used to be there is gone. I've Heard From Some Guy™ that they're rebuilding it, but whatever. I'm wondering if this place is even going to be a live band venue. The bar outside is still there and it's still shitty. The crowd is still largely the same, complete with the awkward white people dancing to Top 40s rap. Less smokers, that's for sure. You'll still find the people who openly smoke weed. To me it doesn't feel like Blackbird Ordinary is a completely new place, just a better version of Transit. I can't do the whole "hittin' on bitches" thing to reveal to gentlemen how whorish the crowd is anymore, but it's Brickell; they'll put out. Downtown Miami's best kept secret...err judging by how many people were packed like sardines into this establishment last night, it's not a secret anymore. So I honestly had NO idea that such a bar even existed in the Brickell area. Poor me! I was going to Blue martini, segafredo, Baru, and all the douche-friendly bars in the area...boy was I missing out! So a friend from my building told me about this place and after a bust night in the grove my girlfriend and I had our first visit last week. The place was wall to wall packed. It didn't help that it started raining outside so everyone from the patio then squeezed (like a size 20 fitting into a size 0) into the inside of Blackbird Ordinary. Two nights ago we came here and there was a live band (Thursday) and the place was busy but not packed. Then last night we ventured to BO and it was awesome! What a crowd! Button down shirts (but casual) and super friendly people. It's nice to hear a sorry when someone spills a drink on your foot. Honestly the best crowd I have ever seen in Miami. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! I love Blackbird. My sisters introduced this hidden gem to me and after hearing all the great things, I could hardly wait to get inside. The line to get in isn't too bad, unless you get there at 11pm and then expect a line to the end of the block. There's no cover fee, but they make up for that with the pricey drinks. If you're lucky enough to get a table, make sure to ask for the board games. Board games & drinks = amazing time. You can also call ahead to reserve a table if yo know you'll be in a big group. The inside can get pretty crowded , but never fear because there is a great outside patio. When the weathers great, the patio is my fav spot. Now as for the music...IT IS FANTASTIC. I love places that play top 40 but bring it way back to the 80s and 90s. On Fridays they do an array of old school hip-hop, pop, rock and I cannot sit down to save my life because I love every song. On Saturdays the music gets a little more 80s. This is really a fabulous place. People are cool. Good drinks and music. Also the dress code is chill, but with the usual Miami flavor. read more

More like blackbird extraordinary. Unlike neighboring bars in sketchy parts of downtown, you can feel modestly safe parking around here, and enjoying the space they have created. It's very comfortable, the guy who spins can really put out some music, and the bartenders are extremely attentive. You'll also find board games, and a pool table inside. I haven't been outside but it looks like it's an available space. It almost looks like it has been around as long as tobacco road. Well done. New favorite spot in Miami!! Who doesn't love a place where you can drink, eat and enjoy some classic games such as Jenga, connect four and even scrabble? First time we decided to try the place and and exceeded our expectations. Walking in it feels like your classic bar with booths all around and very low light. The closer you get to the booths you start to notice what makes this place stand out. There are pots with plants in every booth. Very rare and a detail you won't forget. Started off with the blackbird, very good taste only wish it had less ice. With two sips the drink was long gone and I was left with a cooler of ice and a straw. Some drinks contain egg or egg white. Don't let this disgust you. Be brave and try it! Trust me you don't even taste the egg and the drink doesn't smell eggy either. Okay I was expecting Blackbird to be another expensive hyped up bar, but I am sold on whatever they are doing here because they are doing it right. It gets crazy packed (hot and dark) inside so getting your first round of drinks will take a good 10 minutes. It's also freakishly dim lit and loud inside so if you lose your group good luck finding them again. We migrated to their outdoor bar area which was not any cooler even after deliberate sauntering into the direct path of a fan. Inevitably sweated bullets the whole time from two strong tequila sunrises, Miami's summer humidity and a (clearly overcapacity) sea of people. But as uncomfortable as that sounds, this was one of my favorite "hipster" bars. Out here I could see that it's mostly frequented by young professionals so chances are it won't become too much like a ratchet college dive bar scene. For a cocktail bar, dress code leans more casual. The music selection strayed away from the mainstream, but had everything I enjoyed dancing to. Downsides- that they were overcapacity and still let people in. Also Blackbird... if you're going to charge the same price for a drink at the outdoor bar as the indoor bar, then the drink should come out the same. This was an interesting venue to visit-considering that our typical stomping grounds are up in Lauderdale and not typically Miami, this was a first for me. After a rather lengthy uber ride down and hitting a few more spots in the Brickell area, this ended up being the spot where we closed out a Saturday night where I happened to be having an early graduation celebration. One thing I actually like about this place is that the bouncers here will do a bag check before you come in as well as checking your IDs. Security is huge to me, so this was something that was a + in my book. One of the people in line had a bottle of vodka in her purse and it got confiscated-but was told she could grab it on her way out, so even then they weren't really taking anything from you. The inside bars were completely slammed-it was Saturday night and there were a ton of people here. The bartenders did a pretty decent job at keeping up, as much as possible. Someone in our group ordered a round of "margarita shots" which was tequila with a gummy worm in it and salt if I remember right. Things were fuzzy by then. The cool part of this bar was actually outside. I didn't realize until we got outside that there was a gigantic dance floor as well as the sick video screens projecting onto the side of a much taller building, with a gigantic blackbird on the side. This was pretty cool, especially after multiple adult beverages-I remember being very interested in the large bird that is the namesake of the club. Really liked this place-the outdoor bar was kind of a surprise-and it definitely has a sweet vibe of its own. Will be back during my next Brickell adventure. read more

I was in Blackbird not too long ago after doing a little bar hopping with my lady friends. Considering I'm a married woman, one of my pleasures while being out with "all the single ladies" is people watching the single dudes trying to swoop in on fine looking lady bits. From my keen observations, the available man pool is weak and should be drained, the guys could not made a move on any ladies but would instead stare creepily with a swivel neck looking for prey. So if you're a single lady and looking for a man, Blackbird might be the place for you to pick up a few baby chicks but no place for anything serious. I guess it is a tad late to be showing up places, but that should just reiterate my utter love for this bar! Another popular place I'm having trouble getting behind, mainly because the security takes their jobs way too seriously. I could be on my way down the steps, waiting for whoever is in front of me to go, and they'll scold you for still being on the steps. I can understand that it might be unsafe since you could easily trip, especially while inebriated (which most of the time I personally am not), but really? There's no space and trying to push me down isn't going to help the matter. If you're that worried about it, don't let people go outside in the first place until you can "secure the area". I've also seen them manhandle people, being unnecessarily rough and dragging them off the premises. Inside it's not as bad, although I could be standing near the wall and they say I have to move inward. Aside from the security, the other troubles are maneuvering through the crowd and trying to get a drink, both of which take too much effort. I've tried their signature Blackbird drink, which I think is a little overrated. Maybe I just got a watered down version, who knows. I stopped getting drinks here after that. Overall, seems like it would be a cool place during the day, but I know better than to come here on a Fri/Sat night. As per my roommate, Blackbird is just Ordinary. read more

There are two types of Blackbird. One is a very chill, modestly empty drinking establishment with awesome 2 for 1 happy hour specials (until 8PM), and the other is a crowded late-night, somewhat expensive, and loud bar. I've encountered both of these Blackbirds and can happily say that the earlier happy hour version is my favorite. At the time of my most recent visit, the outdoor patio area was closed and under construction, but since the bar was basically empty, there was plenty of space for our group to relax and chat it up. 2 for 1 happy hour drinks come with a customized poker chip that can be redeemed on the same day or future visits. There's no food service, and parking can be a little rough in Brickell (especially with all the construction), but neither takes away from the simple charms of Blackbird (like fresh herbs on the tables, the gaming bookshelf, and the former edible wall). It was nice to enjoy Blackbird without all the crowds, and I'm sure I'll return to check out the patio when it reopens. read more

I had two cranberry vodkas and two of the house drinks, "The Blackbird." The Blackbird is delicious -- you seriously don't taste the vodka but it's in there. It's like a fruit iced tea and it is necessary, sweetheart. They also had jerk chicken plates but I didn't try it early enough and then it was all gone by like 1a. Fooey. My girls had a great time, and we took some pics at the photo booth (printouts are free and they send a copy to your email -- seriously. You won't be pissed like other places that send ghost emails) and we met cool people who were all having a good time vibing. Most of the time was spent in the backyard area which is so pretty and perfectly designed it's like being at your best friends wedding reception but with a cool DJ. Well it is ! The only problem is that it is really crowded, and so takes forever for the three bartenders inside to serve everyone. As Glenn G. stated, why only 3?! Came for my first time. At first, I was a bit thrown off by the lighting (or lack thereof). But had a few drinks and realized this place is quite a gem. The bar service was spectacular and the corner tables had people playing jenga. More importantly, the music here is BUMPIN'!! This is definitely the spot to go to . They have very good music , 2 dance floors with different varieties in music . They played from Spanish to English & it was just everything I was looking for in bar/club. The vibes are definitely there & everyone's literally there to dance & have a good time . Although most clubs in Miami do close at 5/6 am , I'd say just be careful & try leaving before they close because it can be a lil dangerous leaving the places. read more

Rule 1: Order from the bar. You can't order from your booth. Rule 2: Food is not served here, so don't come here if you're looking for appetizers and on an empty stomach. Rule 3. Been coming to this bar probably 80% of my saturday nights for a year! The reason why I keep coming back is the vibe. Good drinks, extremely good music and really kool people that are just there to shake it and have a good time. It's very laid back and you can pretty much wear anything I've gone in gowny dresses and sometimes in jeans and sneakers after work. We loved this place! You come here for drinks, fun and good music. Lights are dimmed and there are large leather U-shaped booth tables with the bar in the center of the space. There are many board games available, we played games we hadn't in years, jenga, connect four and scrabble. The drinks were delicious! I stuck with the most popular, the blackbird. It's Jeremiah weed sweet tea vodka, fresh blackberries and lemonade. I will say though that I wish it had more drink than ice but I'll just request less ice next time. The music played throughout the night was a nice varied selection. A DJ started mixing at 10 but I feel the volume was a bit too high, couldn't hear what my friends were saying and by the time we left my hearing was shot. The place to start your Friday night for sure! From 8 start the warm up bands, always get the mood going quick, and this is before anything starts happening in the city!!! Once they finish the DJ's start up and probably have the best in the industry, we've never heard a bad set from anyone, they are so good that even if you have to work the next day you'll take the punishment cause you don't want to leave! Customer service here is off the chain. Yeah it's a fun bar and whatnot but what really did it for me is how cool the people who work here are. Sometimes they sell chorizo sandwiches and last night I just happened to not have any cash on me. Usually they take electronic payment but that night the machine was broken. Dude still served me my food and told me not to worry about it. It's shit like that that makes me remember and wanna return to an establishment. Awesome place!!! Thank you Joy M. for recommending it :) I'm very impressed with this bar. It's huge. A few months has passed since I visited Miami, but this place holds great memories. I love the wall of board games and the drinks are really strong. Great crowd - not really a place for dancing even though there is a dance floor. It just gets too hot lol. Definitely a place you should visit while in Miami! read more
