They provide wool blankets should it be chilly. What an amazing tour! Our guide was Jay and he was excellent! Jay was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the park. He spoke for over 3 hours straight! We stopped at several places along the drive and Jay provided great information about the spot and time for pictures. Our tour was about 3 1/2 hours but you can choose to go longer. Bring a water bottle and snacks. There were plenty of restroom stops along the way. We did not see much wildlife but did see a few deer. Make a reservation ahead of time prior to your park visit. There were long lines of people purchasing tickets for the tour. We had reservations so there was only a 5 minute wait time while they pulled the bus around. There are gift shops and restaurants available after the tour. I would definitely recommend the Red Bus Tour to help get an overview of the park on your first day. It was very educational.

You'd be hard pressed to say anything about GTSR aside from "unmatched views of beautiful meadows,…read moremassive mountains, gorgeous valleys, and the occasional waterfall." The road is only open 3-4 months out of the year in summer once the snow has been cleared and it can become closed again if it snows late in the season (that happened this year in 2025), so bear that in mind when planning your trip. That said, it is absolutely worth at least one trip in everyone's life as far as I'm concerned to make the drive along this famous road. It is absolutely stunning, every lookout point is an incredible photo op, and even the visitor centers are in the most stunning, picturesque locations so even if you can't hike any tough trails, you can see some absolutely incredible parts of this park without even leaving the car (although would strongly recommend getting out for hikes if you are physically able - you miss a lot of other grandeur if you don't ). If very afraid of heights be aware the road is kinda narrow and the drop offs can look kinda steep. But there are barriers all along the road, rest assured about that. Overall - this is without a doubt one of the most beautiful drives and parks I've ever been in, period. STRONGLY rec a visit.

Our guide was well versed in the history of the area around the lake and provided us with tidbits and facts. The day we were there, the lake was like glass but apparently windy days are more common. You take the boat from Rising Sun to the end of St Mary Lake. You stop at Baring Waterfall for about 15-20 minutes then continue on. We didn't see any wildlife but moose are common at the end of the lake and we did see some when we walked the trail the day before. The boat is a beautiful wooden boat with lots of open windows and an area in the front that you can stand in to view from outside the covered area. No more than 4 people at a time but on our boat, people went in and out of the area so anyone that wanted to could enjoy. Cost was about $45 each ticket.

We continued on through town to the Townsite Campground which was absolutely beautiful with a creek running through the grounds leading out to Waterton Lake. The creek was fed on the other end by a gorgeous waterfall. Waterton Lakes is basically the Canadian side of Glacier National Park. I strongly recommend that you visit!

If you're new to the park, I also recommend booking one of the Red Bus Tours. It was a great way to experience the park without the stress of driving or parking, and the guide was very knowledgeable. The Apgar Visitor Center staff were also very helpful and gave great recommendations and information for navigating the park. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience and somewhere I would absolutely visit again.

At $85 each ($64 US) this tour is overpriced (compared to the US boat tours in Glacier that cost between $19 and $38 each). Also, it would be nice to reserve the tickets on line ahead of time rather than making sure we got to the dock by 6pm the day before to buy tickets in person. Tip: if you want a seat on the top (the best views and cooler) make sure you get in line 30 minutes before your cruise. Also, there are no bathrooms on the boat but there are restrooms in goat haunt. Glad we did it.

Unfortunately, this summer they aren't able to land at goat haunt because the US doesn't have enough parks workers. There are great views along the whole Upper Waterton Lake. We sat up top which is uncovered for the best views. It was a little chilly at times, but not too bad. They said you often see wildlife like moose and bears. We didn't see either, but we did get to see a bald eagle. I think this is a great thing to do to introduce you to the park.
