Just had a nice experience here at Blackie's Came because of the steak reviews and we were not disappointed. Steak was prepared exactly as we asked. Portions were perfect, staff experience was a good balance. Received a welcome from the owner and manager will enjoying dinner. Other staff was also attentive as they passed by although our server was on top of her game. We will be regulars here now that we have found this quaint spot. read more

What an interesting place in Walnut Springs of all places. The eclectic interior with so much eye candy to stare at on the walls is whimsy at it's best. Many bits and bobs, here and there are great fun. On this visit, I was just in to have a couple of beers with my Bro in Law, who as usual, knew everyone in the place. I cozied up to my beverage of choice and engaged in conversation with the bar lasses. First off, a very cold long neck seemed perfect to divulge in. On another visit a year ago, we dived into a couple of steaks which one needs to pre-order and were tasty. The bartendress was polite and full of conversation and pleasantry's were exchanged. A couple of locals we pulled up to engaged us in tales from Walnut Springs and what was going on at their ranches. At this time of day, they place wasn't packed but the folks that were there were on the older side like me. Got a good giggle out of the sign in the bathroom. There is an outside area, that I didn't fully investigate, but looked like a place where music may be offered. We had a short visit this time around, but it will always be a place to drop in when we are at the ranch. read more

Been coming here for a year now, driving 37 miles to eat and experience the Cabo atmosphere. Last night the crowd was light but all staff seemed rushed and inattentive. Steak was served 10 minutes before other menu items. No explanation. Order was wrong because waitress not interested in pleasing, just get it done attitude. Mentioned that order was not delivered as ordered but ate it anyway due to the long wait. No manager addressed it. Bill reflected no compensation. Nothing offered for mistake. Very disappointed in this small business and how no attention to detail was given. Sadly, we won't return read more

Blackies Bait Shop is another Of Blackies restaurant/bar that is a little out of the ways but well worth the drive. It is in an old building in the down town area. Finally made it for steak night. They offer a 14-16 oz ribeye grilled to order. Comes out smothered in garlic butter which topped it off nicely. Ours came out just as ordered and how we like it. Steak was tender and seasoned just right. Dinner comes with loaded baked potato and salad. The Bait Shop has a full bar and a good sized menu. Saw some pizzas that came out that looked really good and will go back and try one. This is a neat place to go hang out and have a few drinks. Blackie's came highly recommended to us by friends down in Cranfill's Gap so we decided to take that route back to Fort Worth and have lunch on the way home today. Well, whatdayaknow, we rolled in today on the Saturday of the Rattlesnake Rodeo weekend. But amazingly at a few minutes after 11:00 the place was empty. Miss Anne ordered the Be Linda Sandwich which she thoroughly enjoyed. A+ in her book. I went to order the pizza they brag on, a 12", and our server said, "We can do a smaller size just for you." Well, yeah! So I ordered a small with all the toppings I wanted, pepperoni, sausage, Canadian bacon, black olives, green peppers and onions. Meats are 1.50 each and veggies 1.25. I didn't ask but I assume that the prices are the same for this little pizza, which would make the larger pizza a better buy, I guess, as the little pizza cannot accommodate as much of each ingredient. But, regardless, the flavor of every single ingredient burst through and the bottom of the crust was so wonderfully crispy. Another A+. As we are old timers we both took half of our orders home with us for supper. We plan to make this route from FTW to the Gap our regular route now so we can dine here. So enjoyable. read more

My wife and I drive 75 miles to go eat the best steak we can find, a large baked potato and lovely salad. The atmosphere is fantastic with great music piped in or sometimes live. The staff is very friendly and the drinks are amazing. BE SURE to call ahead and reserve the steaks early so you will be sure to get one. Walnut Springs holds a dear place in my heart. My wife graduated from there, valedictorian of her class of 8. My father in law coached there and was also the science teacher there. Not A science teacher, THE science teacher. I was even a sub there for a bit. So Walnut is a very special place to me, but I would never categorize it as a night life hot spot. So you can imagine our suprise when we arrived for homecoming and saw that Walnut Springs had a bar now. After the game, we just had to check it out. So we made our way over, walked through the door not knowing what to expect..... And were extremely impressed! I would describe the decor as what I imagine Jesse The Body Ventura's house in Mexico must look like (of course). There are swordfish on the walls and an hodge podge of different tables and chairs. They were very welcoming, making you feel right at home. The owner came over to visit and urged us to check out the back porch, which was very New Orleans Courtyard like. They had twinkly lights and a great singer with an acoustic guitar. We will definitely be back. So here is what you need to do. Go see a Six Man Football game at Walnut Springs High School (there's nothing like it), then finish off your night at Blackie's. What a great little oasis. read more

We were so excited to try this place on the weekend of the Rattlesnake Roundup after hearing such great things. I hate leaving bad reviews on small, family owned business, but unfortunately I have to. The waitress was much more focused on hugging and kissing on her boyfriend at a table with friends than bringing our drinks. My family (5 of us) ordered chips & hot sauce and the toothpick sticks (fried jalapenos). Maybe half of the basket of toothpick sticks had jalapenos, the rest was fried batter. After waiting 30 minutes after we received our appetizer we were able to order (1 pizza, 3 taco plates). An hour and half later we received the pizza. The waitress said the cook was just putting the lettuce on the tacos. 45 minutes later (after asking three times and me going to the kitchen) the rest of the table received their meal - the pizza was long gone. My dad bit down on a toothpick in his taco. AFTER paying, we asked to see the manager or owner. The waitress (while hugging on her boyfriend in another booth) told us the manager or owner would be right over. 20 minutes later we were tired of waiting and left. I understand a busy weekend but other tables who came in after us received their meals and left before we did. If the service had been made right we might would try this place again. However, since it wasn't, we will not be back. read more

Walnut Springs is a small town & there was not a parking spot & had to park on a side street. All the tables were full & a nice lady, Sara, offered us to share her booth. The owner, Dobber, is back cooking every steak to perfection. Susie, also owner, was serving steaks also. We have been coming to Blackies since it opened but 1st time for steak, which is the best we have had. Always friendly staff & owners. Decor is cute with a marble top bar. Arguably the best steak I have had in many many years, and I've had many. We were there on a Saturday and had never been before, got a recommendation from a sales clerk at a shop in Hico , about 25 minutes away. Made the drive not bad. Interesting decor. The biggest drawback was the fact you couldn't get your steak until 7 pm. Our group ordered other items and two of our group left but wanting the steak my wife and I stayed. The owner came by and explained why and he is very cordial and friendly. The wait for the steak wasn't bad but I will say well worth it as it was very very good. I can see why he runs out the flavor was fantastic. We will be going back with friends knowing to call early to reserve a steak for whomever and enjoy the place a little more read more

Great crab biscuit pizza & guacamole. The atmosphere was fun, eclectic bait shop decor and cool classic rock playing that'll make you want to sing along. Waiting, dining, and bar area are welcoming and comfortable. Bring a DD because you'll want to stay for a few drinks in the little Bosque County oasis. What a great find!!! We stopped in with some friends to watch the Rousey/Holm fight last weekend - and loved it! It's a small-town bar, but very "eclectic" and the owners are SO KIND! Dober and Suzi know how to take care of their guests! The pizza was really good, but the energy made the place great! :) We went next door to do some dancing after the fight, too!
