Yelp let us down on this one. This place would never make it in a larger city. Only reason it even gets 1 star is our server was friendly and efficient. Although she did tell us how delicious the side salad was and you can imagine our surprise when it comes out as iceberg lettuce, 1 slice of cucumber and a few goldfish. The gal finding seats for people was attentive, conscientious, pleasant - waiting in line was as enjoyable as waiting in line can get. The place was active, good energy and people there seemed happy to have us present. I used to bus tables here when I was a teen. I'll be turning 60 in the fall and every other year or so I go to the blacksmith and note that almost nothing has changed. Not the menu, not the glassware, not the general layout or the attached off-sale liquor store. It's amazing really. It's still dark and kind of a cross between a low budget supper club and the roadside bar that it is. The only notable upgrade is that the place is no longer filled with a cloud of cigarette smoke as it was in the '80s. They're known for their chicken and burgers and do a pretty good job. Service is efficient and as friendly as can be with the number of people churning through. Every time I stop in I'm surprised that about half the people there are families with young kids. Worth stopping for sure if you live in Forest Lake or Hugo! read more

today i went to the [blacksmith lounge] hugo, mn to cash a check from the scrap yard that the blacksmith lounge advertises at the scrap to come here to cash your check. so i waited at the bar and when it was my turn in line the bartender woman who was obviously looked irritated and mad and she said to me why do you have two checks? i said because i had to many line items for them to put it all on one check. the bartender was so unbearably rude to me like i was bothering her from her social gossip time with her friends and drunks. then she said she will cash both checks this time but normally she would only cash one check per customer per day, she handed me the money and as i was walking to the table about 5 feet from the bar she loudly yelled at me saying you either tip me or order a drink or just leave,well i was on my way to sit at the table and have some lunch until she said that to me and i turned around and said what did you say to me and she repeated it louder and more angry then the whole bar went silent and they all looked at her and then at me in disbelief and i said why the f@#! would i tip you let alone order something to eat and drink now. i was embarrased and shocked at how this bartender talked and disrespected me in a public reastaurant with so many people seeing the anger she has and jumped the gun becauise i was going to sit down and eat lunch. i don't care any longer about how good the food is here which it is mostly very delicious but the service is just marginal to above poor just by a little bit towards bearable service at best, i will never step one foot in this bar or order food to go ever!!!!! i am also going to let everyone and anyone i talk to know about how this bartender acted towards me for know reason except she was angry about something and took it out on me today.... i would really reconsider going here for anything drinks happy hour dinner lunch etc: i know the food is good but don't give your money to this bar that keeps and hires people like her give you business to someone who appriciates there customers and treats them good like family not rude ,angry disrespectfull arrogant self intitled bartender who thinks she's someone special and thinks this is ok and the give her a tip. ha ha ha lol not a chance. i am embarrsed for the bartender who acted like this towards me today and she should be also. when i find out her name i will post it here and update this as needed. feel free to call her out on this at work and lets see how she likes being disrespected and embarrassed. thank you, tony read more

We used to go there all the time. 5 weeks ago we picked up as take out and within literally minutes of each other that night my husband and I got violently sick. I have had food poisoning before but this was worse. We both said we have never been sicker. And it took several days before we could or maybe had any appetite to eat regular food again. My guess is the salad and who prepared it was the culprit. Won't do salads when there next time. But their breasted chicken is the best in the world and will keep us coming back. Jan read more
