Be aware this practice does not require their staff to be vaccinated. The owner of the practice said he couldnt mandate vaccinations but that isnt the case. He also said that some of his staff is vaccinated if I had come between seven am and ten am. But of course I didnt know that until after my families' life bad been put in jeopardy by the woman who measured me for orogressive lenses who stood maybe three feet away from my face. I am shocked thar a doctors office doesnt have vaccinated staff. read more

I just bought a new pair of vintage frames and I wanted to to get lenses put in them . The place where I bought the frames recommended Blackstone . It was such a pleasant experience. My insurance expires at the end of the month so I was really freaked out when I ran out of daily contacts. Even though the store is closed for the next 2 weeks, I sent a panicked email and someone was able to call me the next day to take my order over and have the contacts shipped directly to my home. I'm really bad about getting my eyes checked yearly. Since moving to LA, I've never once gone to the same eye doctor twice. I took a chance on Blackstone because of their reviews and I'm glad I did. They have fancy tests that I haven't seen at other eye doctors. And Krista couldn't have been nicer. At the last place I went, astigmatism contacts were recommended to me. I was hesitant about them and the ones I got were awful. They were thick, uncomfortable and gave me nasty headaches. I was completely turned off and just decided to live with mildly fuzzy vision. Krista convinced me to give it a try again and I'm glad I did. She gave me a much better brand than the previous doctor and that made all the difference. I made an account simply because I had to tell someone how amazing this place is. I've been going to Blackstone for 2 years now and I can honestly say that I have never in my life had a better experience with any medical professionals as overwhelmingly pleasant as the staff at Blackstone. Everyone there is friendly, kind, and generous to a fault. They walk you through every step of your visit (sometimes literally) and make sure you know exactly what everything costs, what your insurance will cover, possible rebates, expected results, wait times... Everything. They're so nice! I particularly have to call out Dan (at least I assume his name is Dan). The world is not good enough for Dan. We don't deserve him. He has the soul of a rainbow. He is the human equivalent of a sunset. I'm a little afraid of how nice a person he is. He has the calmest disposition I've ever encountered. If we sent Dan to the Middle East in the morning, he would probably negotiate a ceasefire and sit everyone down for a nice cup of tea before noon. It's really hard to find a new doctor (eye or otherwise). Stop your search here. You won't regret it. read more

Went in for an eye exam and staff was super safe, re-sanitizing everything in front of my and being very clear about their safety policies. My glasses were delayed due to issues with the lab, and the staff went above and beyond to rectify the situation and provide updates throughout the process and to make sure that the glasses I received were perfect! read more

As far as Optometrists go, I would definitely recommend going to Blackstone. Everyone was very friendly at the office and helped me with any and all questions I had. As for the "one big sales pitch" comments below, I've had that at every optometrist I've ever gone to. That didn't bug me at all. (And you can always say no.) They're just explaining the services to you not necessarily covered by insurance. What DOES bug me though is how my job switched insurance companies, so I am no longer covered to go to Blackstone. This is a big bummer. Primarily because it's close to my house and Dr. Cheng and the staff really make you feel comfortable in the office. I've had some horror stories with doctors before, but at Blackstone you really feel like they want to take care of you. I also really love how the staff explains discounts and Dr. Cheng and staff know how to use email to correspond with patients. Everything is clear, concise and pleasant when I go there. If you're looking for an optometrist in the Los Feliz/Atwater Village area I definitely recommend this place. Also! It's near a coffee shop and a wonderful health food market, Lassen's. read more

I never thought I'd write a review about a doctor's office, but Blackstone was so above and beyond I feel the need to. I arrived about 15 minutes before my appointment, and I was handed a very reasonable, modern form that included questions such as "what is your cell number" rather than assuming it's 1970 and we still have home phones :) The prescreening done by Dan was honestly the most enjoyable experience I've ever had in a doctor's office. He guided me through each eye test and explained with patience as if it was the first time he'd ever said the instructions. That type of quality in an employee is so rare. He also had sweet Ray Bans---it's like a dentist with clean teeth. The actual doctor, Simon, was equally friendly and kind. We talked about our experiences as math majors, and he calmly and patiently went through all the tests. There was never a feeling that I was just another number in the database---he made it feel very personal, thorough, and informative. (math nerd alert: we also talked about rotational symmetry with regards to astigmatism) Anyways, I just loved this place .If you live in Los Feliz, go here. This place is okay. This office looks like it was placed in some kind of a storage warehouse and the office is a lot smaller than other optometry places I've been to. Simon, the optometrist, has had 11 years of experience and he's actually quite good. He's very informative and definitely wants to make sure that you are given the best contacts that are not just about comfort, but more importantly geared toward health. The only reason I'm saying it's just OK is because I felt misinformed in the beginning when one of the employees was about to do the OPTOMAP Test on me without asking me if I wanted to do it. If I didn't ask him if it would cost me extra, he would've automatically had me do it.....and I would've had to pay an additional $40 at the end w/o knowing till the end. I also didn't know that my refit wasn't covered by insurance...I suppose that's more my fault for not looking that info up online ahead of time. Anyway, it's a decent place to go to if you want a pretty good Optometrist, but service from the employees feels like any other place. The girl didn't even give me a reminder card...seems like she does it only when she feels like it....so I just wrote it down myself. Most people I've met at other offices are just as friendly so I don't give them exceptional ratings for that. Last thing, ALWAYS ask questions!!!!! ...whether it's cost, health benefits, etc...ask ask ask.... I've had my contacts for almost two years and I didn't know the degree differences from my glasses were .5 off... sigh.... knowledge is power. _________________________ I went to pick up my contacts and one of the employees described the contents of my pick up. He ended by saying, "There's also a present inside." I didn't take a look inside the envelope until I got to my car and lo and behold there was a gift card for a coffee shop inside w/ a note saying, "Thank you for being patient." I was blown away. I've never been given anything for waiting before at a doctor's office. So of course, I'm upgrading my 3 stars to 4 stars :o) Yay! read more

I have been seeing Dr. Cheng since before I had vision insurance and he is my favorite health care professional. The doctor and his staff are professional and yet they take the time to get to know their patients. Their product selection is stellar. I wanted something new and totally different from my last two glasses. I found a frame that I thought would be completely out of my price range, but they looked so good on me. Ha! My out-of-pocket cost is only $28. Talk to the staff for a few minutes and you'll see what I mean. They're so cool and super helpful, you won't want to go anywhere else. read more

I loved this place. Dr. Fukunaga and her assistant were beyond fabulous. 5 stars for every aspect from customer service to great explanations. They offered me (recommended) the OptoMap (which I took) but were very clear that it wasn't covered. Other reviewer's comment on this didn't gel with my experience. Upsell was polite and not pushy. The office is small but lovely. Metered street parking was easy on a weekday afternoon. In and out in about 45 minutes. I struggled with this, but had to deduct one star for the front office saleswoman - while polite, the upsell was tremendous and I had difficulty getting her to clearly explain what my insurance did and didn't cover. I just needed a pair of glasses for occasional night driving that would sit in a case for all but a few hours a week. I had to explain this twice and be specific that I didn't want to exceed what my insurance would cover before she stopped the upsell. That would've been fine; I understand that the biz makes money on upselling in this way and she may even make commission. But what really disappointed me was that after my explanation, she opened one drawer, pointed to the colored tags and which would probably be within the cost covered by my insurance, then went back to her desk and clearly lost interest me. I selected a pair as quickly as I could, she wrote down the info with barely a glance at me, and I left. It made me feel like a second-class customer because I was honest about not wanting to spend a lot on a pair of rare-use glasses. read more

I've been coming to Blackstone Optometry for a few years now -- it's a little inconvenient for me because I don't live that close by, but I always love visiting! Like others have mentioned, Dan in particular is a wonderful person (and has the soul of a rainbow :) ... there is overall a very calm atmosphere at the clinic, and everyone I've encountered in person has been helpful and kind. I've seen Dr. Cheng, Dr. Fukunaga (who's sadly no longer at Blackstone), and most recently, Dr. Krista Roden. Dr. Cheng is the proprietor and Dr. Roden joined the office last year. Dr. Roden is wonderful! I feel I can trust her to efficiently monitor my eyesight and eye health, as well as answer any number of questions I have about what's going on. It was my first time visit 2 weeks ago with a follow up today. I am very happy with the friendly yet casual environment they provide. Polite, professional, explains everything about the product you are to receive or might like to try - including looking up details in the books ... It was not a hassle for them to do. They are a fairly busy office and the staff really kept things moving along without much delay. In, out, completely satisfied. I found a new Optometrist by the name of Dr. Simon Cheng. I am very happy. I had brought in an older wire frame that I have and was wondering if the new prescription would be too much weight for them. I was told previously by a different optometrist that it would be, he looked at them himself at first to see how my lens were previously set in, he said that he really didn't think it would be a problem. Much to my surprise, he said let me make sure because they have a on-site Optician. Took them to the person and received an answer within minutes. Nice!! Also, too, I had asked another local Optometry shop here and she said that I would have to sign a waiver and it was questionable. Blackstone even knew what kind of material they would use to make sure it wasn't noticeable, heavy, and still sturdy. I really enjoyed that!! I didn't have insurance, and it wasn't unreasonable how much they charged. If you order contacts from them, they just do it directly and don't charge you a service fee. Also, you can bring in your own frame or buy 1 of theirs (their selection wasn't huge but nice) for the standard going rate. One note, they are a busy office so when you make your appointment I would show up 10 minutes early. I unfortunately was late to mine today, and the next 2 appointments were waiting, while he was working with someone else who was scheduled after my appointment. There was a choice of same day rescheduling (an hour and a half later) or waiting around and see if he couldn't "fit me in" in-between other clients. Maybe that's common, but I would have been third on the list or so because if he other appointments show up ... or ... I could just come in a bit and go to the coffee shop right down the street, or pastry shop across the street. It wasn't so bad! read more

Came here on a referral from close friend. Had not been to get an exam since 2016, so in need of one. Testing/evaluation process so thorough, with the most updated equipment. Did an additional scan for modest extra fee, for baseline. Dr. Cheng was so thorough and spent so much time with me, explaining options and reviewing my test results. I felt I finally had a knowledgable professional seeing to my eye health, and helping me understand differences in prescriptions, contacts, etc. Wonderful people, very professional service and reasonable. Great doctor! I had a few things when looking for an eye doctor. First, he needed experience with astigmatism. Dr. Cheng keeps up to date with the latest and greatest in contact lens technology. He was able to finally (after other eye doctors had failed) find me the right contact lens. He does a through inspection and will be able to give you a lot of eye knowledge if you're into that stuff. Next, I needed a doctor that worked on saturday. When I first made an appointment he actually had to cancel because he was busy on that saturday. A couple saturdays later he added a spot for me. I'm glad I took the appointment. Since I have a busy schedule, he suggested we keep in contact through email. This worked out quite well. He even sent me my prescription through it. I've had a great experience and I look forward to coming back next year. ;-) read more

Update: 02/11/15. One of the doctors took the time to respond to me on this review. I appreciated that effort. He cited growing pains in their practice and expressed his apologies. I wish them well and hope their staffing and online automation can improve the patient experience. Did something change? Where was the great service from the past? What happened? The doctors might be super but if you can never make an appointment that doesn't matter. They seem to have fired the admin and replaced the position with an answering machine. I have called 5 times over the past two weeks -- during their regular business hours -- and only ever received a machine. Don't get me wrong: they have always returned the call. However if you are not at your phone 100% of the time, you'll get their message. (I am in meetings and appointments and often cannot answer my phone.) And when you call back...? A machine. After the 5th volley with voice mail trying to make a simple appointment, I threw in the towel. People: get an assistant. Answer the phone. Or get a proper online booking system. Otherwise, you are going to lose more clients like you've lost me. read more

My name is Vicki and I dread annual check-ups - physical, dental, and vision all equally the same. I like to think that I have a superwoman complex, where like wine, I just get better with age. Unfortunately, time laughs at my complex. About a year and a half had passed since my last vision exam and I was well overdue for a new prescription for contact lens (dang one year prescription limits!) I decided to make use of my insurance and perused through the VSP directory for a local optometrist. I only had three requirements that I sought for: (1) distance (2) parking (3) positive feedback from folks who are a little far off from perfect vision acuity. After some good 'ol sleuth work utilizing Google and Google Maps, I decided that Dr. Cheng from Blackstone Optometry would be an ideal candidate as my local optometrist. From the initial phone call to set up my appointment to the end of my visit, I felt nothing but professionalism in the friendliest form from the entire staff. Stephanie and Mary made it easy to check in by emailing me the new patient form so that I could fill out the form in advance and at my convenience. Dan was super sweet and impressionable, explaining every pre-exam process so that I would feel comfortable and be at ease. After a short wait, Dr. Cheng greeted me and led me to the exam room. I appreciated his input and how he provided me with multiple options for contact lens, ensuring that his input was purely informational and not bias. As I was signing some final documents at the end of my visit, Dan came out and thanked me for my patience and apologized that I had to wait a bit past my appointment. I guess one of the staff members noticed that I went back outside to feed the parking meter, so they offered me a gift card as a token of their appreciation. It was definitely not necessary, but I appreciate the attention to detail and effort to cater to their clients. I think I'm in love! All staff members here are amazing; friendly and personable, and they really value their patients. Dan was awesome in getting me started with all the eye exams prior to seeing the doctor. (He is also the brother of Randall of Fresh Off the Boat which was super cool!). He is attentive and explains every test thoroughly. I was feeling really comfortable getting my eyes assessed :) Dr. Cheng was just as thorough and knowledgeable. He explained all of my test results, and for the first time at an optometrist, I knew exactly what my eyes needed and what was going on. Dr. Cheng gave me several different options and was understanding to whichever fits my current needs. I never had such a thorough exam throughout my 20 years of visiting optometrists. I am feeling more optimistic about my options and needs for my vision; prior to coming here, I've had my exams at Costco and did not get much information out of my visits and was limited to only the one option they gave me. I found out today that there were several different options that suited my desire to wear glasses and contacts simultaneously with strong astigmatism. The price I paid for out of pocket for an exam was around $120. It's much more expensive than Costco, but was so worth it. All of their tools and gadgets were up-to-date with 21st century technology which made the exams so much more efficient and comfortable for the eyes. I also paid an additional $40 for the Optomap Retinal Images. I am very glad that I did because we discovered that there may be a possibility for future glaucoma (something about the cupping of my optic nerves being much larger than usual). Never in my 20 years of visiting optometrists was I aware of this. I am so glad the tests at Blackheart are thorough because now I can take better care of my vision long term. I am so impressed with Blackheart that I scheduled another exam this week for contact lenses. I returned all my contacts back to Costco and going to start fresh here. :) read more

I could see again!!! The main service why I chose Blackstone Optometry over other establishments was from their YELP reviews. I have been for a reasonable eye doctor since I haven't wore my glasses from my high school years. Blackstone provides professional staff that will help you thru your eye exam. I never like going to eye exams. I AVOID THEM. Dr. Cheng is the best optometrist ever! Like review J.F, I purchased some frames at Blackstone and everyone has been giving compliments.
