Now that I'm an adult who can make health decisions on her own (aka no longer going to my parents' optometrists and dentists), I've finally settled on an optometrist of my own! I've been seeing Dr. Cheng for the last 3 years and have never been disappointed since. He and his staff are super professional, very thorough and caring about their patients. I never feel that he's patronizing me but always explains the tests he does and my status of my eye health in a way that anyone can understand. I recently moved to San Clemente and seriously considered driving up to L.A. during the work week just to go back to Blackstone Optometry - simply because they've taken such great care of me over the years. The doctors and staff almost feel like family - and have always given me the best information I need to make informed decisions when it comes to my eye care, my contact lenses, and my glasses. Aside from professional communication and a wealth of knowledge, what really won me over was the friendly and intimate atmosphere of the small, but comfortable office. I've been a loyal and satisfied customer of Blackstone Optometry since 2009 (wow, I didn't realize it was that long). I first stumbled upon this place since I was looking for a better and more regular optometry for my annual eye exams. They had great reviews, so I figured it wouldn't hurt. If I didn't like them I can always change (woot for PPO coverage). Dr. Simon Cheng and his staff are extremely professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. They have very advanced equipment (no need to put yourself through the pain of getting your eyes dilated!) and they explain each step and process to you. It has always been the same staff since I started coming here... that must be a good sign since there isn't much or any overturn. I pay the extra $39 each year for Optomap Ultra-Widefield Retinal Images (I know fancy, huh). It may not be a necessity for everyone, but I find it helpful as Dr. Cheng compares the current images to the ones I've taken in 2009 to examine if my eyes have any issues. I also learned my aunt has glaucoma, and these images help screen for preventative matters. He is also able to use different filters on the images to screen for diabetes. Each of my visits have been efficient and painless (unlike doctor visits where you are sitting in the waiting room for at least 30 minutes before you get brought in). I've ordered colored contacts (w/o power) without any problem. The past 2 visits I learned it would be recommended, but not necessary, if I get glasses to help my eyes use less energy at night due to being slightly farsighted. Dr. Cheng is honest and doesn't try to sell you anything you don't need and has the best interest in his patients... he's always looking to see how I can maximize my insurance benefits. Although the place is nice and cozy, they have an array of frames to choose from in the front of their store. They definitely maximize the office space they have by having each stage in your visit in diff sections of the unit. I've never had an issue with parking -- You can easily find parking at the meters, or maybe at the shopping center across the street. Also, since it's in Los Feliz, you can schedule a nice lunch in the area pre/post appointment. I also had a couple celerity sightings during my visits. read more

I have to say that this place is pretty awsome. The staff are soo sweet and very helpful. They have some pretty neat technology which Dan helped me with to let you know if your eyes are healthy and everything. They emailed me the results right away. When it comes to picking frames, I'm pretty picky. The staff was soo sweet and helped me for a good 40 mins to help me pick what I ended up liking. The only reason why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars was because the place is a little small and felt crowded. Also there is no parking lot so I had to park on the street and feed the meter twice. Not only do they run an excellent practice, they also create real benefits to being a long-term patient with their eye-mapping and their record keeping. Initially picked them because they seemed like the best local Los Feliz option, and I've continued to come here even though I've moved neighborhoods and it's sort of a trek. The trek's worth it, because I feel like I've got a partner in my eye care here, not just a random doc. Also I've had 100% good experiences with every person on staff, from doctors to front desk. I've been going to Blackstone for years to buy frames and have lenses put in my vintage frames. They have a great selection of unique frames, but not an overwhelming amount. Additionally they are great at putting lenses in my vintage frames. I always get the warning that they can't be held responsible if anything happens to the frames, but so far nothing has, and it is a really fast turnaround. Also, once my glasses came back with a scratch in the new lenses and they immediately sent them back to have them replaced as fast as possible. The doctors there are incredible. I've been going to eye doctors pretty much my whole life, and these are by far the best doctors I've ever had. The exam is extremely thorough and any questions you have are happily answered. Plus, they are just really nice and friendly people. I don't know about anyone else, but having your eyes dilated can be a bit of a pain, and they have this super cool laser machine that can see into the back of your eyes and detect things that dilation can't. Plus, as an added bonus to being fully assured your eyes are healthy, you get the photos of the back of your eye sent to your email. Kinda cool to look at. They totally know what they're doing over there and make it a fully enjoyable experience. read more

Been going to Blackstone with my husband for over five years now and Dr. Cheng and his staff have always been prompt, warm and helpful. Chris has always been there to greet us when we walk in with a smile and the wait time is no more than a few minutes. Dan is equally warm and is always gentle and patient in administering the first round of tests. He never pushes extra services on me or my husband and is very understanding of our needs and wants. Lastly, Dr. Cheng is kind, efficient and incredibly knowledgeable about his work. He also saves you the time and grief of having to remember to book another appointment a year later and he does it for you on the spot. I was surprised to find their prices competitive with the big chains and their offering and service superior in every way. I got the top-of-line custom progressive lenses (anti-glare, scratch resistant) with the latest-greatest technology that are actually not available in those "crafter" chain stores. The service, support, and attention to detail was outstanding -- from the exam to the fitting of my frames and along every step of the way. I'm a discerning customer and they made me feel confident, cared for, and actually educated me on how much better frames "tailored" to my face can look. Progressives are super tricky to get right and they absolutely nailed it. I actually teared-up when I tried them on because I can finally see perfectly. Have loved every experience with Blackstone. Love Dr. Cheng - a listener, and he spends the time with you that you need, even if it is longer than anticipated - and his staff is very knowledgeable, very sweet, and always go above and beyond to ensure a good experience. I love that you can make appointments by email (and they ANSWER) and that they make room for you whenever possible. At one point, I lost a contact 2 days before leaving for my honeymoon in Europe, and the Blackstone staff made sure that I had a replacement in ONE DAY and they did not charge me a CENT extra for shipping or expediting the service. I just had my annual eye examination and being a 'foreign transplant' here (from London) the whole health insurance set-up is still a mind boggle to me. I just wanted to state that Blackstone Optometry have provided me with excellent service making me feel special with the 'one to one' treatment, care and attention where I don't feel alienated regards to understanding the Insurance system. This place is great. The doctors and staff are very knowledgeable and really attentive. The pre-screening and eye exam are very thorough and the service felt very personalized. I also really like them because they are great over email. When I had questions about getting replacement frames or getting a copy of my prescription, I could just email them and get a response. Super efficient! Unfortunately, I moved out of LA and am now trying to find a new optometrist. I've gone to several Optometrists over the years. I have an eye disease called Keratoconus and have to wear scleral lenses. The fit of the lenses are very difficult. The Optometrist knew what needed to be done and was able to order me the correct fit. It is hard for me find an Optometrist that is knowledgeable. Blackstone has been excellent in every way. Right when the doctor introduced himself, "Hi I'm Simon", I was impressed. What doctor doesn't think of himself as God? I had the most thorough eye examination I've ever had and they explained all the procedures completely. This place rocks! The only suggestion I have, is to update the map on this page, because it doesn't indicate North or South and makes it look like ihis office is located one block from the 5 freeway. Believe the hype! My best optometrist experience ever. Great friendly organized staff. When you stop in to pick something up it's right there and ready. Dr. Cheng is awesome. Explains everything in detail and never makes you feel rushed. I had a follow up visit wearing my trial contacts and he made a few small adjustments to the prescription before placing actual order. No had ever done that before. He is really up on the latest stuff too. Coolest thing was getting my retina photographed. No dilation. You get to see INSIDE your eye, blood vessels, optic nerve. Then you do it every year to compare and spot potential problems in the early stages. The best! read more

I've never been compelled to write a review, but these guys deserve it. The doctors and the staff were great, but more importantly they took care of my glasses well after other places would have forgotten me. First, I turned down glare coating on my lenses. After realizing my foolishness, I was prepared to pay for a new set to correct it. They only charged me for the glare coating and replaced the lenses. Months later, I noticed a bunch of tiny scratches/cracks on the lenses, no doubt accumulated from rough handling. I went in to ask for advice on polishing them. No dice, they replaced the lenses again, for free. I also got a lesson on cleaning my glasses correctly. They stand behind their work. read more

I had previously been a patient and customer at Blackstone, but bought a condo in 2012 in Long Beach, and thus switched Optometrists. In 2015 I sold said condo and moved back, and came back to update contact lens and contact lens prescriptions on Thursday 6/2. I made the poor decision of working late (post midnight, 14+ hours total) on my laptop on Wednesday and thus was dead tired for my appointment. Dr. Shelly Fukunaga was easily able to tell that my eyes were tired and irritated, I'd been rubbing them all night to stay awake and I was not in best condition to get a prescription that would last for glasses for hopefully 5+ years. Despite the time spent on the appointment and knowing that I'd leave spending $700-$1000 less that day in the office (bird in the hand), she still recommended that I'd get a better prescription if I rested my eyes and used eyedrops she prescribed gave me for free in the meantime. This is a place where appointments are tough to get because they're so busy, because they give the level of individual service I described above. It would be easier for her to profit more by giving me a somewhat subpar prescription, have me buy glasses and my contacts that day, and not see me for 1.5 years. Instead I have a follow-up on 6/14 where I'll get the first pair of glasses I've loved and worn frequently in many years. Glad I moved back to the area, especially when I know that I'm getting the best care that money or PEOPLE can provide. This was my first experience with Blackstone and I started by looking for someone on my insurance plan and close, however hands down I chose them because of the many great reviews here on Yelp! In no particular order: 1) I was impressed with how welcoming, customer service oriented, and efficient each of the staff members were. 2) Dan (as many have said before me) is a great asset to the company -- such good energy and very good at explaining what each machine did. 3) Noone tried to up-sell me (YAY!) and enough options were given with everything priced out that It was easy to process. 4) Dr. Roden was great and patient with (MY) frustrations with the eye issues I have. And again, she did not try to upsell me on procedures or types of solutions like other places might have. 5) Mary helped me choose frames and specific details of them and she was wonderful with great recommendations. I've been going here for over 8 years and remained a loyal patient because I love them so much! The staff is incredibly personable and kind. They are always helpful and it feels like an old school neighborhood shop. They accept a wide variety of insurance (I know, mine has changed a lot over the years) and are excellent at explaining all the benefits. There's a nice selection of trendy frames at a variety of price points. They've never tried to sell me on something I couldn't afford! The space is small and can feel a little cramped at times, but it gets the job done. I appreciate the atmosphere more than a sterile doctor's office. But if a big fancy space is important to you then you'd probably like some mega chain better. I also appreciate that they send email and text reminders for appointments and email Rx for convenience. They are very accommodating with appointments and can usually get me in soon and I never have to wait long. There's a reason I keep coming back! Love you guys! read more
