I've always had a soft spot for this place but I feel a lot of my love for Blake's is from having grown up in Santa Fe. For my money, it's the best quick burger after Bert's Burger Bowl. Having lived in Los Angeles for the last 11 years, I can't say Blake's could come within a mile of In N' Out or Fatburger for that matter, but it's definitely a lot better than the other major burger chains in town. BE WARNED: These guys slather their burgers in very tart, cheap mustard. Personally, I ask they leave it off altogether. I tried their NM style burger. First time. It lacked flavor. Yes, it was edible. Nothing objectively wrong. It was just underwhelming.

Simply amazing burgers. In a sea of fast food burgers chains there are various tiers of quality. In my eyes there are only two chains which belong in the top tier. Which two you ask, Lotaburger and In N Out. Angus beef and unparalleled freshness in the fast food realm is what one can expect from this establishment. Too early for a burger? Lotaburger recently started serving breakfast burritos in the morning which are outstanding, and huge too. Blake's is my favorite quick stop for a burger, anywhere in New Mexico. Tasty, fresh food in a clean, retro-ish environment. Not the type of place for a night out with your sweetheart, but good for whenever you're hungry. The friendly staff will treat you right, and will fix your burger the way you want it. Why not 5 stars? Because I'd prefer to get a good burger at a fast-casual restaurant where they bring the order to your table, and where you can enjoy a cold one while you wait for your meal. Fast-food joint operating at a slow-food pace. No drive-through. Would not recommend or return. We came in about 6:30 on a Friday evening, on a tight schedule, and were the only customers in the place. Placing our order was agonizingly slow, with a cashier who struggled to describe the items on the simple menu, and had repeated misunderstandings and confusion as we placed our order. Food preparation did not begin until every item in the order was placed and paid for--and then it proceeded at a snail's pace. While appreciating that it was cooked fresh to order, which takes time, AFTER our food was prepared and we should have been on our way, we stood visibly impatiently waiting as the cook chatted with three coworkers and intermittently and slooooowly wrapped up our food to go. Maddening. Our 6-item order (3 burgers, a hot dog, fries and a milkshake) took more than 20 minutes--and after all that, a mile down the road we discovered that one of our burgers was a single instead of the double we'd ordered and paid for. An overwhelmingly frustrating experience overall. Zero stars for service--mitigated by the fact that, after all the wait and despite the error, prices were reasonable and our meal was pretty tasty by fast food standards. read more

Typical Blake's Lotaburger - when it comes to hamburgers, they all seem to be very consistent in their preparation. I haven't had breakfast so this is a review for burger, onion rings, and strawberry shake. I'll put a double meat Itsa Burger with cheese and green chile up against any other chain out there or not here (re: In'N'Out). The onion rings were very good, especially if you like them very crispy. The strawberry shake could have used a little more strawberry flavor. This particular site is nice because: Has both indoor and outdoor seating. Good central location in Santa Fe. Not so nice because: Parking lot needs repaving. California has In and Out, Illinois has White Castle and New Mexico has Blakes. I am one of those folks who'll always point to Blakes for a damn good burger at a damn good price. A lot of folks complain about having to order green chile extra b/c they don't have a green chile burger. Guess what, this is a burger joint, not a green chile burger joint. For $3.70 you can get a big ass "Lota Burger" and if you want some chile it'll come out to $4.10. $4.10 for a quality burger with a healthy amount of chile. Not bad. As far as the location on St. Michaels, it is always clean and the people are friendly and work hard. No complaints. Went there the other day for lunch, arrived at 12:00. Order taken at 12:06 after a customer brought their order back to the counter to point out it was all wrong. That causes the entire staff behind the counter to stop what they're doing and discuss this one thing. Fascinating group dynamics at play here. Not efficient by any means... the line kept growing as we all waited for the people behind the counter to figure things out (and maybe figure out who was to blame and who not...) Long story short, I walked out of the place at 12:39, finally, after waiting 33 minutes for my order. I got to watch in close detail how the place functions, or, better put, malfunctions. First, the food preparation... yikes. Just, yikes. Second, the cognitive overload... these folks were pushed to the max during a lunch hour rush, and just barely keeping up with the orders. Then because they'd all stopped working to discuss the mis-order as previously mentioned, they stopped cooking burgers, so there were no patties being cooked, Buns were being toasted, however, so there was a pile-up of buns but no burger patties for maybe 10 minutes... orders PILING on.... I stood there and watched as this went on and on and on and on and I thought, man did I make a mistake coming to this place . . . I just wanted some lunch, I didn't think it would be 40 minutes before I even got the lunch..... What it is it about New Mexico? People here seem to hate a) chocolate and b) mustard. Try ordering mustard on the burger at a Lotaburger (by the way, one does not get a lota burger at Lota-burger...) Same at Wendy's... try ordering mustard... it's an ordeal. Tell them you want a FULL container of mustard (they don't have little packets, they have to pour some into a little plastic cup with a top on it), and they give you a speck... as if they were too grossed out by the sight of mustard to put more in..... I got no mustard at Lotaburger, even though I made it very clear i wanted some.... Caution: when you place an order with a soda drink, they give you a cup FULL of crushed ice... water being cheaper than soda, they want you to actually get as little soda as possible in your drink, even if it's a large... and every customer seems to be on to them, as there is a MOUNTAIN of slushy crushed ice at the soda fountain that people have dumped out of their cups before pouring in soda.... Overall impression: yuck. Looking forward to FIVE GUYS opening over on Zarafano. However, this being New Mexico, I am expecting that they won't serve mustard either. read more

It's true, it is a local chain.... And that's about it. The quality is similar to Burger King at best. You're not missing much if you haven't experienced this New Mexico wonder. I tried most of their burgers and their shakes and if I need to use one word to describe the joint it would be "Meh". Although, I do wonder what they put in the shake as it taste like liquid burger. Don't go. I've been coming here for three years once a week because these are the best burritos in town, and I bring my son and we sit and watch them make the burritos. Today I watched them take chile in giant plastic bags and heat them up IN THE BAGS ON THE GRILL. Incredibly unsafe. I had already eaten as I watched them do this and contemplated making myself throw up. I really like this place, they were nice and made me an off menu grilled cheese. I also had their sweet tea. Which was good at first then had a strange taste later but was still good. The fries were ok. My dinner companions liked their tasty burgers. Staff was obliging to me as a vegetarian. Especially since they aren't a very vegetarian friendly establishment. read more

As of late their burgers have really suffered. The meat is not the same as it was in the past few years. Not sure what's going on there. It's thicker and often times almost feels like it wasn't cooked through. Like it came out cooked from the freezer and then warmed up on the grill. I had one recently that had cooked blood around the sides and it tasted old. I thought it might be a particular restaurant and have since switched but both places had subpar burgers. These were really horrendous frozen patty burgers. Their chicken also came out of a freezer. The green chiles are just TOO HOT! Onion rings were oily and hard. Fries weren't completely disgusting but weren't great. The staff will talk about you in Spanish if they think you don't understand them. The employees kept customers waiting in line while they did their own thing?? customers in front of me were grumbling about the bad service. I thought at least the food is excellent. After receiving my food, I took it to the park to eat. The food seemed alright at first bite although the bun was refrigerator cold! I had never received food like that from there. Biting further into the burger, it was solid wet mass. What a disappointment. blakes...forget it. There are other good places to eat a great burger served by employees that have a better attitude. And hey, I also have happy memories of good burgers at blakes, my first job at first blakes in SF 1970. Times and employees have changed. Which blakes are u all raving about. The blakes on Rosario in SF is good and so is the one on airport road. Ignoramuses I am speaking about the one on Cerrillos Rd. across from Walmart. 1970 that makes it about 38 to 40 years old and old mr. blake sold it about 10 or 15 years ago when all the supervisors were fired and replaced with the people who work those places now. It's easy to complain...so when I waited for the staff to fix the cash register for 5 minutes and our food just sat there on the counter, as the line in the drive through now wrapped around the corner, I thought how rude that you have made your cash register problems my problem and now you let my food get cold while 4 of you attend to the problem. The manager then comes to the windows and is like "OK sorry" now your order is going to be $14....I am like, you're kidding right? You make all of use sit here while you fix your machine and make us pay. I don't think so. So to his credit he was extremely cool and apologetic and gave us our grub, which was the right thing to do. So my shout-out is to the manager at the Speedway store (Tucson) for recognizing the impact to customers and fixing the issue, where I will not only return for another visit at some point, but also relay to others the high-quality of your employees actions.
