We've passed The Blind Onion several times, either going to or coming from hikes up at Mt Tabor. I'm not the biggest pizza fan, but my lobster is so... after our hike at Mt. Tabor the day before Father's Day, I suggested we grab lunch here. I noticed Nico B. pointed this out in their review several years ago, and I think it bears mentioning again that this is a neighborhood spot, so parking will be at a premium. The pizza godz must have wanted us to finally try it because we had no issues finding a spot around 1 pm on a Saturday. This is a walk-up/order-at-the-counter establishment where they bring your order to the table. We ordered delivery so I cannot speak to the customer service or cleanliness of the restaurant. We ordered the 12" pepperoni, pineapple and Canadian bacon and 12" olive, mushroom and sausage. We also ordered the Caesar salad but that didn't show up with the pizzas, not sure if that was the restaurant or delivery drivers fault. The pizzas were both really good. Damn, this place is good! From the quality of the pizza ingredients to the friendly employee, we were so happy we chose Blind Onion. I never eat my crust on pizza, but the crust here was so good that I ate it first! This is what pizza should taste like! The crust was perfectly crispy, with just the right amount of chew. The red sauce had a strong, fresh tomato flavor that really stood out. The toppings were well-balanced, with the perfect mix of cheese and sauce. We tried two pizzas -- a Carnivore and a Hawaiian (yes, I'm team pineapple on pizza!). Both were delicious and satisfying. The family and I are in town for a few days and we decided to try out the Blind Onion. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Walking in I loves the vibe. Listen, the crust on a Blind Onion pizza is braided, somewhat sweet and unconventional. The meats are fresh, but oversized. It calls it "red sauce." The pizzeria itself? A cave. But the combination of all of the above plus a decent tap list of Oregon/Washington beers? Absolutely works. This has become one of my family's favorite stops for pizza in this neighborhood because this is what a neighborhood pizza shop should be like. The aforementioned cave is well-worn, but cozy and comfortable. The pizza requires some adjustment, but is enjoyable and doesn't commit crimes against the medium (kudos for realizing that the Italians have a white sauce at their disposal-Alfredo--and don't require dumping snot-textured Hidden Valley salad dressing onto a pizza as if we're somewhere in Nebraska. Keep your "ranch" with the cattle, Hoss). During a period on the pizza timeline when even stalwart establishments in respectable pizza cities dabble in Hawaiian pies, Blind Onion's mid-'90s-style experimentation seems almost normal now. At this point, it's outlasted a Hotlips up Sandy and an ill-conceived Pieology location practically right across the street. The neighborhood knows the quality it's getting from Blind Onion, and realizes that the quirks are part of the package for a great neighborhood pizza place. For all of the pizza shops in this town that come up with pre-packaged concepts that try to emulate 70-year old establishments in New Haven, the West Village, Orange and Lincoln Park, Blind Onion has never tried to be anything other than a Grant Park/Hollywood neighborhood pizza spot. In a land of $30 pizza, you may as well eat a good one in a place you love. Blind Onion fits that bill every time. P.S. When we bought a wood stove and a spark screen at Gordon's years ago, we were introduced to Blind Onion. It's now been so long since Gordon's even existed (hey redevelopers, wanna get a move on? Small casual restaurant with low ceilings and weird music across from an abandoned building covered in graffiti. Not much indoor seating, but there is a little more in the back, plus some outdoor picnic tables along the sidewalk. The food comes out relatively quickly for a pizza place. The pizza bottoms have thin crusts, but the edges are thick and toasted. I like that they have a "Create your own pizza" option, but it can get pricey when every extra topping is $2 or more. At least they are generous on the topping amount. The 8 inch size pizza does not come out looking as small as it does on their wall. Besides pizzas, they offer salad and sandwiches. Will all the hubbub about Portland being a great pizza town, I'm kind of surprised that this spot hasn't gotten any recognition. I ordered from here all through the pandemic and it was consistently delightful, with a semi sweet California style crust, fresh toppings, and lovely presentation. Finally stopped in today for the first time, and the staff was super friendly and accommodating. The oddly low ceiling and psychedelic rock soundtrack accompanied by paper towel rolls on the tables and zillions of little boxes of Trivial Pursuit cards just add to the impression that you're at a little local spot that puts far more emphasis on being inviting and relaxed than any kind of foodie pretension. Had not been here in years and I am so glad we tried this place again. Over twenty five years ago used to run (basketball) at Fernwood gym with my buddies, and had a friend that lived close by. My girlfriend was in town and we were staying close by at the Doubletree Lloyd center, so I suggested it, hoping that it was that place I fondly remembered. Nostalgia was high, as a true Portlandia hipster made an appearance in the wild so I could impress my girlfriend with the local wildlife. Amazing Grace! How sweet the smell that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found. Was BLIND, but ONION. I tried this place on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon. I had the Hawaiian pizza. So, I will say the bad news first before the good news. The only reason why this spot did not receive that extra star to become a 5 star is because of the middle of the pizza. What I mean by middle of the pizza, I mean the sauce, cheese and topping. It was not eye-opening, paradigm shifting, or out of this cosmos. I can't even say that this is bad news because it wasn't bad, just not amazing grace. Now, the crust is where this pizza spot hits the money. I just wanted some sauce for the crust because it was yummy for your tummy. Overall, this is good stuff, so check it out if you can. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to pizza having lived most of my life on the east coast and being part of an Italian American family. We don't put pineapple or bbq chicken on our pies! Blind Onion is walking distance from my first home in Portland so I've ordered pizza from here a number of times. While my preference is Naples thin crust pizza, I do enjoy their crust, especially the braided edge with hints of garlic. Our go-to is the pepperoni - did I mention I'm a traditionalist? And sometimes we add onion. The large definitely feeds 2 people with leftovers, at least for me since the thick crust is very filling. If dining in, I prefer sitting outside at a picnic table on the sidewalk. Inside is dark and a bit claustrophobic which adds to the dive atmosphere. read more

Tried Blind Onion for the first time while visiting Portland. When I called ahead to ask if the pizza dough contained any of my allergens (eggs, dairy, etc), the staff member I spoke to was a bit curt and seemed more concerned about making sure I knew their dough recipe was proprietary than giving me a basic overview of the ingredients used and their allergy policy. Since the dough is apparently not made in-house, he was only able to assure me that it was vegan. Staff members should be informed of the ingredients of all of the products used or be willing to consult an ingredient guide/manager/chef to address routine questions about dietary restrictions. I ordered a custom pizza with four toppings, and upon pickup, one of the toppings was missing and had to be added on. The pizza was well-prepared and delicious, but when we ordered again a few days later for delivery, the pizza arrived once again without that same topping. For a pizza with four simple toppings (mushroom, onion, pineapple, and tomato), forgetting a topping and making the same mistake twice seems unreasonable and when combined with my previous interaction, indicative of poor service. read more
