This is a familiar type of place for Portland - not inexpensive, but great food. It's small, shareable plates. A friend brought me here and we split 8 plates and each had a dessert. One drink and the "Employee Health" charge of an additional 5% made the bill $163.80 before tip. Okay, so that's the not inexpensive part. As for the food, there were several great dishes. I was not wild about the salad we got, The Crunchmaster Crisp, the my friend said a different one she had previously was really good. We got the Crusty Avocado - seeds coat the outside and inside the avocado is filled with Ahi tuna. That was a good dish. We also had Garden Peas which were pretty good. The trout was excellent, the Fried Chicken was unique, and quite good. We got a couple of the skewers (they're small!), the pork belly and the steak and both were great. I could have ordered several and made a meal out of those! The Milk Chocolate dessert was good, but I wasn't a big fan of the "baby popcorn". The Whip-a-licious was well liked by my friend. It was better than I thought it would be because I'm not a big passion fruit fan. Our service was excellent. All together, I definitely recommend for the food, atmosphere, and service. There were also times where it felt like we were waiting forever for the next dish to come out. That said, the food was impeccable. I really wanted to love this place because of all the hype. Their Instagram makes everything look incredible, so I came in with high expectations. Took my then partner on a date here. Overall, the experience was fun, but the food didn't quite live up to it for me. The menu feels more like tapas or shareable small plates, so expect to order several dishes if you're hungry. I also found the portions to be pretty small for the price. Refer to the photos. We came here for date night in March and were seated on the outdoor patio. Although they had heat lamps, it was still pretty chilly. The drinks, however, were the highlight of the evening. Mine even came with a fun little elixir shot on top, so cute! Wanted to love G Love, but it didn't hit the mark for us. We had reservations on a Friday evening, and were glad we had one since it was pretty packed. The energy was bustling and ambiance felt pretty good to start, but quickly got awkward. Within a minute of placing our order a waiter brought over a bowl of potatoes and dip saying "these are for you". Huh, strange given we didn't order potatoes but maybe it was on the house? We tried looking around to see if we could ask but also saw every table had them so thought maybe it was just something nice for the night so we started eating. Then, I noticed we started getting a lot of stares from the wait staff who started whispering, which is when I realized we may have identified ourselves as the latest spud-nappers. Within another minute, a plate of halibut came out. Also strange, we did order halibut but typically we'd expect our salads/smaller dishes to come out first but okay. Before we could take a bite, our waiter came back and swooped that plate up saying "this doesn't belong here" --no apology, no clarification, just poof. We could see the expo getting frustrated, trying to explain the table numbers to the wait staff so maybe it was just a new set of trainees? The table next to us also asked the waiter to hold off on firing the next few plates to give them time to digest, but unfortunately their next plate also came out within 2 minutes lol. I get the frustration, but the full (volume) meltdown that occurred right after just made it uncomfortable for everyone around. Getting to the actual food, we got the stone fruit salad which my husband loved and I thought was pretty good, the ensalata bomba which I really liked, the pork belly skewers which we both liked and the scallop skewers which we both haaaated. They tasted like borderline rotten briny boba, and I had to give mine to my husband to eat because I almost vomited from it and I normally love scallops. Do not get those! We also got the fried chicken and the halibut. The fried chicken was fine but I didn't walk away blown away. It tasted like it really wanted to be like its Japanese cousin karaage, but the breading was too thick and there were chunks that were purely batter. Needed a wedge of lime to brighten things up. The halibut was ok too, we liked the pickled cherries but the whole dish didn't come together in the way we wished the flavors would. Overall, I'd say the food was a 6.5/10 and wait staff confusion was a 4/10. Midway thru our meal our waiter asked if we wanted dessert before we wrapped up and we were confused because we still had half our dishes and he just walked away. Then at the end it took several attempts to flag someone down to pay our bill, which added another 15 minutes next to meltdown Mariah next to us which felt like an eternity. For the amount we spent, I definitely think you could get a better meal elsewhere. read more

We all commented on the decor, especially the bathrooms. They have both indoor and outdoor (covered) seating. The service was fantastic. Our server and food runners all took great care of us. Great outdoor patio. The avocado plate was really good. The rest of the food was about average. The bad thing about this place is that they want you the customer to pay for their employees medical by adding a 5% surcharge to your bill. On top of that, they request a 20% tip. I always thought it was the employer's responsibility to pay for employees medical and not the customer. Why not just increase the menus by 5% so we don't feel ripped off. read more

Since we had been to the Love Shack before we knew we wanted to try brunch at G-Love as soon as they announced it and finally got the opportunity to. While we couldn't get a reservation we decided to just head down and see if we could get a table for three. They were able to seat us no problem. The waitress explained that everything is intended to be shareable so we ordered the croissant breakfast sandwich and eggs Benedict!! They were both amazing and the flavors were excellent. A big shout out to Tyler who made us feel like family and served us from start to finish with efficiency, kindness, and exceptional care. From the moment you enter G-Love, you feel like you chose the right spot to celebrate life, a moment, or to spend time with family and friends. The drink menu: why is everything so enticing? I can hold my liquor, but not well enough to try all the things that tempted me. Luckily we love sharing and getting tastes of one another's libations. Here goes: We started with The Cecilia, The Princess Peach, and a Matchstick Martini, as well as a Diet Coke for the responsible one at the table. Even the taste of the Diet Coke is elevated, or was that just me? Maybe it was the eco-friendly straw... For food, please don't judge. I live in LA and when I come here, I feel like I may not get another opportunity to come back so I need to try it all. Is that gluttony or wonderful gastronomique decision making? 1. The Crusty Avocado - crusted with coco-blackspice seeds, drizzled with Yuzu and lemon, filled with delightful Ahi Tuna, and a bit of caviar. 2. Broccoli Caeser - traditional with some parmesan and breadcrumbs, but the miso caesar dressing and lemon make it unique and delicious. 5. Garden Peas - I LOVE THIS, did I have to share... YES. served with a citrus yogurt, a macadamia nut pesto, and schmaltz. Get the PEAS says me never, but I do now. 6. Crunchmaster Crisp - maybe my favorite, still up for debate. Charred cabbage, crispy shallots and garlic (already a fan), hazelnuts, apples and Kel's onions. Do not miss this. 7. Hamachi Crudo - This is one of my absolutes, hands down, delicious dishes that shouldn't be overlooked. Divine pieces of sliced hamachi crudo, with a coconut cream and some other delicious things that I can't remember. I blame it on Cecilia. 8. Carrots and Citrus - Not only was this beautiful, it was another one of the dishes that I wished didn't end. Brown butter, pistachio, chili crunch, Tom Kha Vinaigrette. Garrett, where are you so that I can hug you for this dish? 9. Asparagus a la Plancha - fiddleheads, miso-lemon hollandaise, egg yolk, and crispy potato. And you thought this was ironed asparagus. Guess again. Delicious. 10. McFarland Springs Trout - perfectly cooked trout, with smoked buttermilk, cilantro puree, garnished with arugula radish salad. 11. Spring Tagliatelle - served with a broccoli dill pesto, garlic confit, pancetta, and fried anchovy breadcrumbs. You had me at anchovy. 12. Fried Chicken - finger lickin good, truly. No need for the Colonel to get worried, as this fried chicken is in another category. Superb. 13. Pork belly skewers & Scallop Skewers - tasty small bites of perfection. Don't pass these up. How many of us are dining you ask? Five. Shhhhhhh,. Dessert? Really, YES. Since there were 5 of us, we got all three. Of course we did. 1. Milk Chocolate: butterscotch, baby popcorn and honeycomb. 2. Whip-a-licious: Passion fruit curd, lime meringue, coconut crack. 3. Golden Cloud: Golden milk sorbet, cardamom, masala, honey caviar, and chamomile. My family says: 5***** to all, I simply couldn't. I found G-love from an internet search on Yelp for organic restaurants in Northwest Portland. I can't even express how delicious the food was not to mention the incredible service we received. I happen to be gluten-free and dairy-free and I was provided a marked up menu that informed me of every option available to me either as a regular menu item or a modified dish. There were so many amazing options I could not even try them all! The area is very active and inviting and the restaurant, it's staff and it's food are out of this world! Came here for an anniversary dinner. Reservations were easy to get a couple days in advance. Ambiance is fresh, modern, light. They also have a great outdoor, heated and covered patio. We sat at a two top near the exposed kitchen and got to see some of the chefs' handiwork. Service was great. Our server was friendly, available and not pushy. We ordered a la carte as we had specific dishes we wanted to make sure we tried. We ordered the albacore and steak skewers, crusty avocado, fingerling potatoes, crunchmaster crisp salad, a duck large plate and hamachi Kama (both no longer on the menu). The only disappointment was the hamachi Kama. The server had recommended this over the salmon entree, as it was more unique.. but we did not enjoy the taste. Hayden was in charge of my parties reservation, it was a big reservation for 14. We initially got the offer to have a separate room for it, which was nice, but we opted for the patio because of how beautiful it is in the spring. We decided to visit to host our friend's baby shower brunch, and it was the best decision we could have made. The table was set up with flowers, but they allowed us to add our own vases too. We arrived a bit early to set up, but even with 14 guests they were able to set up our table at the perfect time. Hayden took our drinks order, helped us move gifts and bags we brought, helped organize the tables for ease of photos and movement, and was overall just a wonderful service host for our section. We honestly could not have gotten any luckier with service. For food, I ordered the Ensalata Bomba to share with my partner, and the Stuffed French Toast to share with the table. Everyone agreed that the salad was incredible, and all the other food on the table was so fresh and delicious. It was all plated nicely and was all very easy to share! Most of the table got coffees which were all sooo good, and I got a hugo spritz which tasted like a fresh cucumber spritz. Went back 3/29 to try their new brunch menu. First of all the coffee was delicious. I ordered the iced ube latte and loved it! The hot pistachio latte was also very good. I came here for a year end dinner with some friends. The place was pretty busy and made me forget that it was a Sunday winter night. We ordered the family style menu, where the chef decides what we get. It was an easy decision for us as we didn't want to think. The food came out pretty quick and was excellent. I really enjoyed the fingerling potatoes, ensalata bomba, and the grilled bavette. The drinks were also pretty good and interesting especially the Goldie Hawn - cheerio infused whiskey, coconut water, vanilla, and sesame. Overall, a great experience with friends. read more

Please check your receipt carefully. I noticed a 5% "Employee Health Fee" added to my bill. When I called the restaurant, they explained that the fee is disclosed on the menu. However, many customers may not read every line of fine print on the menu and may be surprised to see an additional charge added to the bill. In my opinion, employee health-related expenses should be covered by the business rather than passed directly to customers through an extra fee. I would have preferred the menu prices to reflect the actual cost upfront rather than having a separate surcharge added at checkout. Just sharing this so future customers can review their receipts carefully and be aware of the additional fee. read more

As tradition goes, I always do a menu tasting when I'm in town. This was the winner after my extensive research. I chose this spot because they focus on vegetables and are leaning on healthy options. We checked in 30 minutes early for our 7pm reservation, but they were kind enough to seat us. They put us outside. It was a cold night, but they have heaters blasting. I was the only one who did the wine pairing. My friends did end up getting one bev. They poured me a good amount each serving. AND each wine was so good. The chilled red was my favorite. Then the food started coming. And it kept going. First were the starters. We got the avocado, potatoes, beets and the bread situation. My eyes lit up after each bite. Holy shit everything was so delicious. Like slap the table good. I forgot about my wine cos I kept chewing. Next up were two salads. The first was a beautifully plated pear and the other was our favorite dish of the night- the crunchmaster crisp salad. The explosion of flavors in that salad was perfection. I would've eaten the whole plate, but had to share. We then moved to the chicken, cauliflower salad and steak. I l started to hit my wall after eating about half the piece of chicken I got. I could barely eat the salad. I had a couple of bites. I did manage to have a piece of the steak that looked beautiful sitting on their special sauce. To end, they gave us churro bites and a passion fruit ice cream. We had a little bit of trouble digging in cos the ice-cream was a little hard, but it was meant to be that temp. It was so refreshing. And just the right amount of sweetness. The first course was my favorite. There so many different flavors happening. I was overwhelmed in the best way. Service was 10/10. They took the time to explain each dish and drink that was dropped off. They were friendly and personable. We got checked on just the right amount of time. Modern dinner spot with fun ambience and innovative dishes. We have never had anything like the dishes we had there before. The standouts were Fingerling Potatoes and the Blackened Trout. Love the umami-ness of the creme fraiche trout roe dip that came with the crispy potatoes. Their trout was super well-cooked and moist. This paired very well with the tumeric pickles. Their menu is vegetable forward, featuring lots of salads and grilled seasonal veggies. The Ensalata Bomba was refreshing. Skewers were a tad too small...Their food in general is tapas-style but they skimpped out a bit too much on the skewers in my opinion. Desserts were fun. We tried the Calamansi Sorbet and really liked the tartness. Overall, a fun spot for special occasion and I'd go back to try more of their food and drinks. read more

The food is excellent and if you can tolerate abuse from the staff for the love of food then definitely go. The host was terrible and would not walk guests to their table, instead he mumbled and then did a flagrant arm gesture to where guests tables were, I watched guests throughly confused throughout the night. The waitress started out with a list of rules including one that you have to put all of your food order in at once, no starter order and then entree order. This was a little bit like the soup guy on Seinfeld. I understand for the kitchen but that's also time to add drinks to the ticket so I don't understand the economics of this restaurant. The staff do not seem happy despite guests being charged for their health insurance. The cocktails were excellent but I do not think they want you to order more than 1. Will I go back, yes. Will I hate every minute of their service and wait to order drinks and tip absurdly somewhere else, also yes. read more

For a holiday gift one of my sons gave me a dinner out with him at G-Love. We went this week and it was a real treat on two levels - of course 1:1 time with my 27 year old son is always special and the food and service at G-Love was outstanding! I never comment on restrooms in my reviews, and I don't want to spoil the surprise - so just let me say you HAVE to see both water closets! We both had an Audrey Hepburn to drink when we arrived. It was perfect on a cold night and quite pretty with a star anise floating on top and a cinnamon stick, all served in a clear cup so you can enjoy the view! You can see it in the background of the Citrus beet salad picture. On to the food. My son said that we needed to try The Works, so who was I to object? We were presented with nearly half of everything on the menu. They do serve meat but this place is very vegetable forward. Sorry about the photos - nearly all had some eaten before I remembered to take pics! :-( First, the fingerling potatoes came out with the most amazing dip! I loved it so much that I could have had a big portion of that for dinner! The dip had a slightly smoky taste with basil oil swirled in. The cold crunch of the roe was perfect. Also in the first course was the beet and citrus salad and the focaccia. Salad lovely and the focaccia had been split into quarters before the cheese was melted on top. Very thoughtful, I thought! You can see the Crusty Avocado in the background of fingerling potatoes picture. Any avocado, crusted or not, is enormously improved by a topping of ahi tuna and caviar. It was delicious! Second course was the Crunch and Bomba salads. Both delicious but it seemed odd to serve them together because they are both green salads. Next out was the Braised Short Rib which was served over a bed of yummy mashed potatoes with Demi-glacé and amazing home cooked potato chips. For dessert, they served us the Whip-A-Licious and banana ice cream with Carmel sauce on top. Perfect end to a truly lovely meal!
