She couldn't remember the name of the spot and walked away. Several minutes later she ran back to my friend and said, "It's Blue Bottle!" The fact that a stranger ran her down to tell her the name of the coffee shop made my friend think, "wow, I've gotta try this place." So my friend told me to meet up there one afternoon. I grabbed a table outside, and my friend went inside to order. It took a solid 35 minutes to get a hot chocolate and a simple pastry. The hot chocolate was good but not worth the wait. I got to talking with the girl at the counter and she was so kind and made me feel really welcome to the area. The only downside is that there is not a lot of table eating inside and the furniture is not very comfortable. Love this place! I visited last summer and enjoyed the ambiance and the outside patio. In COVID times, there is no inside seating, but you can still enjoy the outside patio, which overlooks the canal. They are very safe and limit contact with customers. One of my favorite things about Blue Bottle is the single origin pour over. On my most recent visit, I ordered an Ethiopian roast, and honestly it was one of my favorite Ethiopian coffees of all time. I liked it so much I got another one about an hour later. Order a coffee on a new white cup I just grap on my way to the counter. I notice the flies on the food right next the cashier. I told him "you have many flies where the premade sandwiches are". He said "I'm aware". "Your all set" and he hand me the cup and the receipt. I ask him if he could use the cup I just both that has the coffee logo on it. He took the cup put warm water inside and did not even clean the cup. You can imagine it was the worst Americano coffee I had in DC. At least the cup will serve it purpose. Don't go here. read more

I first visited a Blue Bottle Coffee shop in NYC and loved it there, so I was quite happy to see one open up in DC. I've now been to this location several times, and have always had a pleasant experience here. The cafe does have a minimalist, hipstery vibe that I personally enjoy, and there's plenty of seating and room to converse with friends. The baristas are all very friendly and well-trained. They've always been accommodating of my friends with lactose allergies and are happy to walk you through their menu options. I've never had a bad coffee here, but my favorite is the New Orleans style iced coffee. It has a nice flavor without being too sweet. I also really dig the bright blue straws- I know that's purely an aesthetic feature but it's very pretty. In the last five years, there have been quite a number of these independent roasters gaining much-deserved recognition in the District and even some of the big third-wave roasters flocking to D.C. to open up shop(s). Now, we welcome Blue Bottle Coffee. A beloved and popular roaster from the Bay Area, Blue Bottle has spread its coffee arms all across Northern California, Los Angeles, New York, and even Tokyo. And now Washington, D.C. Blue Bottle has opened shop right next to Dean and Deluca, just off busy M Street and on the edge of the C&O Canal. Their grand opening was on Sunday and as someone who's been waiting for Blue Bottle to make an appearance here, I was there less than 30 min after their doors officially opened. The space, while not enormous, is bright, airy, and clean. There are a couple of seats against the wall and near the floor-to-ceiling open window and a long communal table. We were one of the first people there on opening day, so we were able to grab a table. However by the time we were leaving, the line was out the door and folks were hovering to find seating. Despite the busy day, the baristas and staff were all super friendly with everyone and even made the time and effort to chat with many of their customers. For drip coffee, their most popular blend is the Bella Donovan which has tones of milk chocolate, caramel, and red berries. Espresso-wise, the Hayes Valley is the standard with dark chocolate and brown sugar notes and a syrupy consistency. However without fail, I think the most popular item on the menu is their New Orleans iced coffee. I'm a big fan of this iced coffee too. Their New Orleans iced coffee is coffee infused with stout and cold-brewed with roasted chicory. It's creamy, slightly sweet, and indulgent. Perfect for hot summer days like what we're experiencing right now. I had a latte here as well as a green tea. My BF had their Peru drip coffee and a cascara fizz. We also shared a Belgian waffle with a chocolate drizzle. Their tea is sourced from Samovar Tea, a tea lounge in San Francisco. I actually visited both Samovar Tea Lounge and Blue Bottle in the Bay Area a couple of months ago, so it's nice to be able to get such quality coffee and tea on both coasts! The sencha green tea was fantastic. I love that they take just as much care and time as making the teas as they do with their coffees. The cascara fizz is a very interesting drink. Cascara is the dried skin of the coffee cherry (the actual coffee bean is the pit inside the cherry). Usually it's discarded as a byproduct of making coffee but it actually has a very unique tasted when brewed like tea. And that's what Blue Bottle does. A tea made from dried coffee cherries and infused with simple syrup and lemon juice, topped with sparkling water, Blue Bottle serves this refreshing beverage as an alternative to patrons who may not like coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. I would gather that they're still trying to figure some things out... but questioning me when I inquired about an iced coffee I paid for but never received...just seemed a little absurd. When I first moved to DC from New York, I was surprised that DC did not already have a blue bottle. 1.5 years later and I finally get an email about their Georgetown location opening. I almost always get the New Orleans when I visit a blue bottle or a cascara fizz if I'm feeling for something different. You can never go wrong with the New Orleans though! (Sometimes I buy a carton to go too) Service has been amazing for all my visits. I've been back every weekend since it opened and basically stopped visiting other cafes (oops). I love that it has a lot of seating and I can settle down comfortably to read a book. While I was there last week, one of the staff also came by with some pastries to sample. Too bad I am planning to leave the area soon as this is a great addition to Georgetown. Will be back for more coffee on the weekends. read more

Very nice. If you have never been to a Blue Bottle, this is as good a chance as any. It's just a little more expensive than your Starbucks, and a lot better. I recommend the New Orleans on a hot day. Similar to a black tie. The cold brew is immaculate. Almost all the coffee is single origin. Pastry selection is good. So is the merchandise for that matter. The staff is extremely professional and positive. Cafe layout is nice and open. White and light wood tones are Blue Bottle's aesthetic. The location is a few blocks from M Street, granting a reprieve from the hustle and bustle. Anyone who enjoys coffee for its own sake will enjoy this cafe. read more

Great addition to the Georgetown area. I've been to Blue Bottle locations in SF, Palo Alto, Tokyo, etc and they do that glossy corporate immaculate aesthetic better than most of the trendy third wave coffee shops. This location is particularly appealing because it's light, airy, and tucked away from the main bustle of M Street with plenty of seats. Super high ceilings, lots of white space and blonde wood. Lovely spot to take a break with friends or plop down to do some work. Their coffee is great, of course, and for hot days the cold brew or iced New Orleans (slightly sweet with milk) coffees are great on the outside-facing bar seats. For when you don't feel like coffee, the cascara fizz is a perfectly bubbly, refreshing drink that's not too sweet. The selections (beverages and food) are minimal but high quality and it's my preferred option in the city to post up compared to busier places with bigger menus (e.g. Slipstream). Personal preference is to stick with coffee/drinks here, since there are much better pastry/etc options in the vicinity. Overall, a pleasant and much-needed spot in this location with standard prices for what it is. read more

Love the coffee and the shop! I wish I lived closer so I could come here all the time! Coffee: It being a typical July day in DC and having walked from Farragut, I was only interested in their ice coffee this visit. They had two options on tap: New Orleans, which is lightly sweetened and seasoned and already has some milk mixed in, and a single origin, which is black and unsweetened. I'm a black coffee gal, so I went with the single origin. It came ice, ice cold in a tall glass with a fun, bright blue straw since I was eating in. This cold brew was so refreshing, smooth, and bright on flavor! I loved every sip, and I was such a happy camper enjoying it at the long communal table while I cooled off and did some reading for work. Shop: Making the coffee experience even better was the awesome interior of the shop itself. It's so bright, open, airy, clean, and modern! Having all the natural light flooding in, fun music at just the right volume, a mix of AC and letting the outside in, and no clutter or distractions from the decor made this such an ideal place to come and work to get out of my stuffy downtown office. That may change when the weather cools down in a few months and when Georgetown students return to town and flood this place, but for now it's heaven! Location: I wouldn't like this place nearly as much if it were on M Street, because it's so peaceful being tucked away along the canal towards the far end of Georgetown. And you get to appreciate that setting thanks to the massive opening along the front wall that's setup with a bar and several stools. I love, LOVE this place and can't wait for more of them to open in town! I will come back here every chance I get, though that won't be frequent given how far away it is (boo!). read more
