He was beyond helpful, friendly and professional and answered all of our questions. My partner purchased a traditional man's shearling coat and I purchased a reversible (leather to shearling) swing coat. The coats arrived right on time. I felt that the size small that I ordered was a bit too snug wearing heavier clothing underneath. I called Barry and had no problem exchanging my coat for a medium and received the exchange quickly. The $500 mink jacket I bought at Blue Duck is almost the equal of the $2,500 Toscana shearling coat I have from Nordstrom's. I ordered the mink on a Tuesday and got it five days later, with nothing charged for shipping. It is soft, stylish, warm, and just as fashionable as a $2,000 sheared lamb coat that was selling at Vince a couple of months ago. Because it is made from pieced (or "sectioned") mink, it's not quite as ridiculously soft and plush as a coat made from full pelts. But it's still very silky and nice to touch. If you want a fur or shearling and can't afford department store prices, Blue Duck is worth it. Yes, the people at this place are curt and to the point, like a lot of other New Yorkers. They're not in the business of making you happy; they're in the business of selling you things. If you want sales associates that fawn over you, don't shop at a nondescript storefront in the Garment District. read more

I first heard of Blue Duck when I stopped a woman in a restaurant in Chicago to ask where she got her shearling coat. I waited until visiting New York to go to the showroom to try them on. My flight was delayed and traffic was heavy but Monica stayed late past closing to let me come. I tried on a number of coats, and found the perfect look. Monica had many good ideas about what looked best on me, and I ended up with a reversible rain coat too! She was very relaxed and patient, treating me like a valued customer as I kept her late on a Friday evening. NO STARS - Yelp makes me select one star. Today is the last day of Blue Duck's Clearance Sale. There is also a noteworthy SNOW/SLEETand RAIN STORM. The weather receive NO STARS, as well. I've been looking forward to their sale all week. I bought a Blue Duck Shearling jacket at CENTURY 21 last fall, and thought I would treat myself to another one. I bundle up and travel over. I am the point person for three of my friends, to report on the remaining inventory and prices and whether or not it is worth their time to venture over. I walk into an empty showroom around 11 AM, ahead of an inevitable lunch time rush, so I think. I see racks of jackets and coats clearly marked by size and a woman talking to a guy. She shouts to me, "What do you want?" Isn't it obvious, I'm there for the sale. I get closer to her and say "hi," and she shrieks at me, again. "What size are you?" The contempt in her voice and attitude was palpable. As I walked over to look at the coats, she bitched with a punitive tone of voice, "You should have come earlier in the week, this is what's left." She turned her head and started chatting to a gentleman about a payroll situation. ****Lesson my father taught, never purchase from a salesperson who exhibits contempt for you.**** There was a nice selection of coats there. The prices advertised start at $500., $750., and $950. I didn't see the neon green $500. sticker on anything. This lady made me feel uncomfortable for shopping there. Love the coat. I got a baseline reversible in charcoal/ black. Nice cut and shape. Fits me very well. I ordered ccs, it is not snug but a bit loose and trendy type of oversized fit. I absolutely love it. Both sides look awesome. Very soft, and make me feel ready to be out in the coldest weather and feel the warmth and protection. Length of the coat is just perfect. Given I am so short and petite, this coat if worn with an above knee skirt and boots will give that stylish Russian beauty look. Good collar. I don't need other fur scarf anymore to be able to pack light. I know the other benefit Which I for sure will enjoy is how little this coat will need in terms of care and maintenance. So I did a lot of research prior to choosing Blue Duck for my winter coat. This is a large purchase and even with their "sale' it was $1k. Anyway, the point of my review is to prevent others from believing the reviews I got before buying here. First, the main guy Barry is not suited to retail and so he's brusque, authoritarian (he does manage the whole showroom) plus completely WITHOUT accommodation. Also they are very clear with signs everywhere - "No return, No exchanges only store credit". This is what happened. I shopped with my wife for a coat there, we finally came to a decision and he took my order. We had to suggest he take some measurements - and when we left I called back because he hadn't taken any of my waist and I've got a belly. So he tells me its not necessary 'he took in into account'. End result the coat is tight overall - through chest and even near my neck at top I called after receiving about a very lame/frail zipper to a thousand dollar coat and his response is "that's what we use". The zipper is problematic to make a connection and it is a zipper you would put on a windbreaker NOT a shearling expensive winter coat. Finally the primary question I asked from the beginning was "Is this going to be warm for zero temperature? He says: "Oh you'll be plenty warm" - well nyc has had a test and when it was 10 out I was out and it was NOT warm. Bottom line: Blue duck is not the place for a coat you can count on and I would not recommend them for quality, service or durability or even value for cost. For me this was a poor purchase I will now have to live with as long as it can last. Don't make my mistake. It's probably fine as a place for an 'extra' coat if you're rich enough to spend your money that way. read more

I have 2 coats and a vest from this amazing shearling showroom and love them all. The company has been around a long time, has a very good reputation and sells to major department stores. Top quality, snuggly and lightweight, the items all have deep leather pockets for cell phones, which is essential, and closures that keep you warm. They have classic styles and also more modern trendy ones. Once a year after the main season ends, they have a sample sale whereby customers are invited into the showroom to purchase at wholesale prices, basically a gorgeous shearling for under $1K, half the retail price. But this is not a normal sample sale, because not only do they have already made coats that are leftover from the season, but for a similar price they will customize to your exact measurements, add a hood, make it longer, etc. That other customers on yelp complain about the service astonishes me. The owner and the showroom reps could not be nicer, despite the fact that this is not really what their job is the rest of the year! read more

Ultimately, I found another online that I liked and ordered that one. Rather than just ship the coat, Monica went the extra step of emailing me for my measurements. Ran in late on Black Friday after calling to make sure Blue Duck was open. Barry - the owner - and Richard were wonderful! Thought I knew what I was looking for and found 2 pieces, not in my mind's eye, which called my name. Got amazing prices, one is being made in my size, and both are being shipped to me (my hands were full and alterations (free) were necessary anyway). THANK YOU! It had been years since i visited. I remember a larger showroom about 10 years ago, but there was PLENTY of inventory and variety and both Barry and Richard were happy to explain this coat comes in these colors, etc. Cannot wait to wear my presents to myself! The worst experience ever!!! First they misled us with sizes , and how the coat will look in the real life , where on the picture its all nice and fluffy with perfectly looking skin and fur in the real life we got pinched rabbit fur, I called them they reluctantly accepted return for corrections of sizes and fur , came back with corrected size without a tag , but with two different colors and types of fur what is it Chinese factory ?????This is ridiculously unacceptable!!! Called the Owner Berry or whatever his name and he is playing rough guy , tried to over talk me on the phone and get this - clients always Wrong ! Also says he inspected the coat carefully and it looks fine and nothing he can do. Enjoy this terrible work of mine. This is the most unprofessional and arrogant behavior I have ever encountered. Huge mistake. Never go to Blue Duck shearling, and i am not bitter client that complains just because, hate whet this happens but its above and beyond!!!! She saw the shearling coat she wanted, and then saw two more in completely different styles. Because she was in need of an emotional "boost", we never discussed the price or whether she would wear the three coats. As it turned out she never wore them. She died a few weeks later. I returned to the store with all three coats in the unopened, original bags, and explained the circumstance. I ordered a sale coat from them. Returned it because the quality of the coat wasn't up to standard. They advertise it to be Spanish Merino but I doubt it. The coat was thin and the fur inside felt synthetic and so short and I could see the leather through it. It was also not dyed evenly and had bare patches. I returned the coat the day after, UPS express with insurance they charged me a $70 restocking fee. They state on the website that SALE items can only be returned for store credit however because of the quality I would not want a coat from them. I have a Blue Duck Coat I bought over 20 years ago. I still wear it. The fur was soft and luxurious and its warmth is incomparable, but the quality now I wouldn't buy it for any amount. Its not worth it. read more

I was a little skeptical about buying a shearling coat online but I was not disappointed. Most of the reviews on yelp are about their customer service and buying their coat from a third party. I recommend avoiding the customer service and 3rd parties and just use their website directly to avoid any problems like I did. Dont believe the bad reviews! I saw that their coats get awesome reviews through a major high-end department store but were sold out. I also saw that the on-line reviews for their NY showroom complained of poor customer service. So I was initially reluctant to buy from from the showroom, but i'm so glad i did. First, i saw beautiful coats on their website. The website could be better, though, because the zoom and other functions are not the best. Then, i called to talk about sizing, return policy, shipping,etc. (I am not in NY, so this was a strictly long-distance purchase with no opportunity to try on first). The woman who answered the phone was nice enough, but not well enough informed to answer my detailed questions. She passed me to Barry who seemed equally nice but was busy at the time. He said he would call me back. I thought that would be the end of it and that i would never hear from them again, but Barry actually did call me back and answered all my questions, as well as expressed some reservations about my measurements for the coat i was thinking of buying. The return policy is not the best - store credit only, so was still nervous about buying. I didn't order (nor was there any pressure to), but instead waited. The next day i called back and, again, Barry was kinda busy but he dutifully called later. He gave me a ton of his time, we talked about sizing, and when i told him that there was another coat that i also liked, he said it would be much better for my size/measurements (I'm a size 14, 6'tall). He also said he could make the coat a little longer (length is always an issue) and he agreed to ship on a date when i knew i'd be able to receive the shipping. Everything worked great. The coat fits great; the length is perfect; the quality is absolutely beautiful. Although i have old thick shearling coats, i was nervous about this micro-shear stuff, fearing it would not be warm enough. I've now worn this coat in 40 degree weather, and didn't sweat to death, and in 4 (yes, four) degrees and was totally comfortable and warm. It's lightweight (for shearling - dont expect feather light of goose down). It's soft and gorgeous. Dont be discouraged by the yelp reviews. If you take your time and make an informed decision, you'll love you coat! read more

I can't say enough about my beautiful shearling coat! I'd been eyeing this coat for years and my husband bought it for me for my birthday. The coat is so unique and the quality is incredible. It's a loose swing type of a fit, but when I received it I found it to be a little too loose. I called and was thrilled to hear they would be happy to alter it for me. I should have believed the numerous 1 star ratings!!!!! I ordered a coat from Saks Off Fifth and was virtually appalled at the POOR quality of the sheepskin; the fur trim was deplorable. I was certain the "fur" was synthetic......but wait..........synthetic fur has a more luxurious feel and look than what was on this coat. No wonder it was price slashed on Saks Off Fifth; they were probably trying to get rid of their stock!! I am surprised Saks would even consider stocking such a poor quality coat. I only interacted with Blue Duck by phone. I had already bought a coat at Nordstrom's, but found one at Blue Duck that looked much nicer. From the get-go, the woman on the phone was rather rude. When she eventually found out that I had already bought a coat form Nordstrom and liked hers better, she became a bit better behaved. I can kind of understand that customers must be annoying after a while, but then she should hire someone to deal with them if she doesn't enjoy it. Also, she assured me that she has NEVER had an unhappy customer when I asked if many people bought the coats by phone, site unseen (I am in Boston and they have no showrooms here). I'm so glad I read these reviews on Yelp, which in retrospect highlighted to me the oddities in my phone conversation with Blue Duck. No thanks, will find something on Newbury instead. read more

I think my shopping experience trumps all, even the professional shopper (although the story about the person who passed away is pretty sad, I am sorry for your loss.) Went there with the best of expectations for a 1x as I like coats large, had emailed them and they said to come to the store they have that size. Went, found one in an XL and indicated would pay to have it made longer. Guy makes a big thing of measuring and we come to a length that is 2 inches less than the coat I have on. (this is important later in the story!) Three weeks go by, still waiting for this wonderful coat, call they say come tomorrow (me thinks picking up coat right!) And I try the coat on and it is an XL not the 1X - guy apologizes must be the wrong coat come back tomorrow (this is the 3rd time taking a lunch to go there) Come back for the I think pick up and have the coat but with no buttons (its a sizing for buttons he tells me I have come for) so I get fitted for the buttons, settle up and leave and on the way home realize that the coat is not 43.5 inches long - so I call the next day and have him measure it - sure enough it's 42 inches. WHATTTT (remember it is cash only final sale) so now I freak and we "agree" to make it 44 inches for $300 more dollars. So now it is another 1 1/2 weeks (oh did I mention winter is over by now) and the guy says he will have it shipped to me so I don't have to come back again. I mention its pretty heavy and he OFFERS to have it delivered in a gift bag so I can carry it home. another week, still waiting I call the office and the woman says he's off and away on vacation - I ask about the coat and am told to call tomorrow. FINALLY my coat is being sent to me - she will ship it - comes the next day in this 7nfoot box that would be impossible to carry home - there wasn't even a bag inside to carry it with. no nice anything. The end - are you ready, THE BUTTONS ARE IN THE WRONG PLACE and have be corrected by my tailor. My husband suggested I charge back the $300 which they had accepted as a charge o AMEX but at this point I want nothing NOTHING to do with these people except to tell as many people as I can of these horrible people. And the last part of the story, my tailor said the coat is definitely not Spanish merino and is of poor quality. Thank G_d the price was half of what I would have paid at Nordstroms or Bloomingdales.
