If you love delicious Thai food and warm hospitality you have to visit Bencharong Thai House. Pad Thai is some of the best I've ever had, Fresh Rolls are a must. The couple that runs the restaurant are so hospitable and excited to share their craft. We live out of state and come every time we're in town! I was surprised to see people complaining about portion sizes or price - that's absurd. I can never finish my plate and it reheats like a dream. Please don't weigh the bad reviews when considering if you should eat here. I think those people are just generally dissatisfied with life, and it has nothing to do with the food. They probably don't even really like Thai food. Trust me. Go. Try new things you don't usually order. Ask for recommendations. It's all exceptional. read more

We loved Bencharong!!! Amazing service, atmosphere, and food. They even had fruit infused water! If we lived here, this would be a regular for us. Had dinner here while spending the week in Arcata area for my 50th bday! My husband and I enjoyed a delicious dinner including fresh spring rolls, drunken noodles w tofu, yellow curry with tofu, mango sticky rice, plum wine, and sake. Okay, now that I wrote it out I realize we really ate A LOT. It was so good, though!! I've eaten here a few times and each time the experience was a bit disappointing. We've tried the pad thai, drunken noodles, fried rice, and the thai tea. The portion sizes are way too small to justify the prices and it's not authentic Thai food at all. It's quite bland and the only thing we liked was the thai tea. Great food, ambiance, and service. I placed my order over the phone, was told it would take 25 min. I arrived about 5 min later and then my food came out 10 min after that. Ambiance was great for being located in a strip mall. You'd never know it. Small inside but ample room to sit and enjoy the meal. The food was on another level. Spice was just perfect. It's always a good sign when a place is already crowded around 5 PM for dinner. Bencharong is one such place. My wife and I had first discovered it coming back from the redwoods when we were looking for a place with vegetarian options, we could have confidence in. Thai restaurants are one such option. The Meing Komm is the appetizer that drew us in. Never seen it elsewhere. On a small platter car little piles of Thai chili, roasted, shredded, coconut, peanuts, chopped red onion, and a couple more along with sauce, and a collection of small leaves. You take one of the leaves and spoon a little of each ingredient onto it and then pop it in your mouth. Delicious! And I'm not really a fan of coconut. For my entrée, I went with the grilled pacific cod. That arrived firm and just shy of too dry. It comes with steamed vegetables and its own sauce and garlic rice. I enjoyed the flavors of this dish as well. I had a glass of one of their Cabernets. My first sip I thought it was a little sunburned, but after waiting a few minutes, it opened up and was more than drinkable. If I was not driving to San Francisco, I would've had a second class. The servers are friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes. My only complaint is that they should be attentive about clearing dishes. My table was a little inaccessible as tables are placed, fairly close together, since the space is small. So I don't fault my server for not clearing , although he could've asked me to pass my appetizer plate to him. At the table next to me, the whole server brought the entrées without first clearing the appetizer plates. Nor did she ask for diners to pass the appetizer plate to her when they lifted it up so she could put down the entrée plate. Instead, she let them put their appetizer plates to the side, and then inquired if they would like her to take those plates (which were empty). That's a given! I'm sure the desserts are good, but I wanted an espresso for the road, so I went to the Finnish sauna/café, and had a cappuccino and chocolate covered baklava there. We are visiting Arcata and the kids wanted Thai food. I didn't like the idea but we saw this place. When we got there it was busy. We waited twenty minutes for a table. They're welcoming and the service was great. The ambience of the restaurant was awesome. Now for the food. The egg roll was delicious. But the Pad Thai didn't taste authentic Thai. Food was overpriced. I wasn't expecting to pay for the amount of food we ordered. The portions was for a kid not an adult. Authentic Thai is questionable. This place is tucked in a shopping center. The pet store right next door through me off, to be honest. But we parked (free and easy) and walked in - pleasantly surprised by the nice ambiance and decor. It is small - maybe only 10 tables. There was only one waitress and I felt so bad for her. She seemed so stress as the restaurant quickly filled up and she was overwhelmed. This of course led to multiple tables, including ours, to have to have king waits for ordering, drinks, getting food, etc. I saw one table sit without any menus for more than 10+ minutes. By the time we left on a Thursday night at 6:45, there were at least 4 groups of people waiting with estimated wait time of 30 minutes. They would be able to get people in sooner if they had more than one server. They really need to do better with staffing. As for the food, we got coconut prawns (a special), chicken satay, chicken pad tai, cheo kung (my spelling is off), and a Thai iced tea. The food was all just very bland. Everything lacked flavor - I mean everything, including even the tea. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't worth the $90 ($6 for a side of peanut sauce is ridiculous). We won't be back. read more

Just drove into town from PDX and my wife found this restaurant. OMG!!! The food is absolutely delicious-- fragrant, succulent -- perfect. I just wish I could eat here maybe 73 more times. The garlic fried rice is perfectly cooked. The Royal roll was fresh and crunchy. The yellow curry was yummy and the teriyaki pork was deeply tasty. Okay so heading off to the next city tomorrow. We also had the Bencharong house soup, with veggies, which was mild to the point of being bland. Both had very nice noodles, though. A husband and wife partnership where she runs the kitchen and he runs the front of the house works perfectly. Presentation preparations and quality are all spot on. In a remote town you generally don't have a lot of options for legit SE Asian cuisine, but Bencharong was surprisingly delicious! The pineapple fried rice is off the hook, with a nice combination of meat, pineapple, vegetables, and Thai spices. Drunken noodle also a good option, with rich flavor and colorful vegetables. I also recommend the Thai tea which provides a generous quantity of coconut milk. So delicious, great staff, great interior--just wish the portions were bigger! read more

The food was delicious. The portions are generous with tons of flavor. We had the Spring Rolls, Tofu Pad Thai and Tofu Rice. The place is small but nice. You can tell they are popular in the area. We were visiting the Redwood Forest and found this place here on Yelp. The reviews on food were right...it's delicious. However, we didn't give it a 5 star because when we arrived, we had an awkward experience. We showed up and stood at the door waiting for a table (4 were available). We waited and nothing. The waitress passed by gave us a head to toe look and didn't greet us. So we just grabbed a table (assuming that's why she didn't talk to us) but then as we waited...and waited for menus and maybe a hello, she kept ignoring us. Finally another family shows up, she greets them right way in a super friendly way and gives them menu. I seriously should have just walked out at that point, but instead I AGAIN made eye contact and asked her for a menu. She brought them to the table and just placed them on the table. Meantime, the other family gets menus handed to them, waitress super nice with their daughter (doesn't even acknowledge we are there with a child too) and serves them water. I seriously wondered if it was because the waitress was white and we were the only Latinos in the restaurant. Moments before we discussed just leaving, the other waiter approached us and asked if we had been taken care of. He was super nice. This guy was attentive, hard working and friendly. We placed our order and were delighted with the food. The waitress came to our table and handed us the wrong appetizers. When we told her they weren't ours, she rolled her eyes and took them back. I want to give her the benefit of the doubt and say she might have been having a bad day, but she was only rude to us. She was super friendly with the other (white) customers. Towards the end of our meal, a Thai woman showed up (she seemed to be the owner). She was very nice and accommodating. Seriously, while retelling this story it makes me want to give the place a 3 because we travel so much and never felt discriminated like we did yesterday. But it wouldn't be fair to the restaurant owners, chef and that cool waiter that saved the day. She might need some customer service training. Hopefully she receives some support. Bencharong Thai is legit one of my favorite Thai food spots ever. On both my trips up to Humboldt I made it a point to come here. First time was a few years ago on a Saturday night with an hour wait. The place is small and popular. Last night it was cold and rainy, so a nice warm Thai dinner was in order. On a Wednesday' night the place was still packed! My boyfriend and I got the last table and even after 8 (they close at 9) people kept steaming in for dine in or take out. The staff treated them all graciously. They were friendly and warm our entire visit there. Food is wonderful. Fresh and flavorful. I was so happy with all the colorful veggies in my tofu ginger dish. Rice comes with the dinner plates as well. Royal rolls (vegetarian) were also quite good. I'd love to try more items on the menu since everything coming out for other diners looked amazing. Cozy,decor and white string lights also lend a nice ambiance to the place. Lots of parking in the shopping center it's located in as well. Excellent local Thai spot. Would come back again! read more

It's a cryin' shame when a place you used to really like and admire falls so far from grace. When I moved here three and a half years ago, this was one of the first places I ate. It was great, everything tasted authentic, ambiance was good, staff was very nice. Over the past year or so, I have had increasingly bad meals from them, while at the same time the prices have only gone up. First observation was a drastic drop in portion size, to the point that after I ate my pad see ew, I cooked myself something to feel full. My next meal from them was pad Thai that was about one third proper pad Thai noodles and two thirds of what seemed to be angel hair pasta. the flavor was all off like they just left out ingredients altogether. I had also gotten tom yum soup that was watery, had a few button mushrooms, and a nugget worth of chicken with a lot of lemon grass and a bunch of red chili flakes. I was so aggravated I was never going to go back. Eventually I gave them another try and got pad see ew. the portion and quality was better, however the price had jumped again and I said once in a great while, if I really really want Thai and not to cook it myself I will order again. Well that day was today and it was one of the worst ones. Got red curry and a Thai tea and arrived to be sticker shocked at $28. Got home and started to spoon the "curry" over the rice, realizing that it had the consistency of chicken noodle soup with a bunch of steamed vegetables and some chicken thrown in. It was pinkish but not even opaque, which makes me wonder how they think it's Thai curry without a coconut milk base. Not much flavor, just chili flakes. I ended up opening a can of coconut milk and some curry paste and thickening it to actually have something with the right consistency to put on the rice. I shouldn't be cooking it myself to remedy whatever this disaster this is that they sold me. It's one thing to raise the price, then cut portions and raise it again, leave out ingredients and have inconsistent or even bad meals go out and raise it again, but when I pay the most yet and have to ask what the "hell am I eating?" on a Thai restaurant staple, then I don't think they care about what they are serving any more. Giving two stars because the people are nice, and that is why I feel bad about writing this, but the food is bad now and the prices are ridiculous for what you are getting. read more
