Judging from their see-through door on their fridge, I guess I was just supposed to know they only serve beers. I have been visiting the place twice or three times a year since 1986. Those folks that got their feelings hurt, felt neglected or offended at the Blue Lagoon need a hug from their parents and need never to go back. The place is iconic, been there forever, nothing has changed and it is what it is. It's smokey, small and grungy. The place and people don't care about your race, gender, economic status, physical handicaps, employment status etc etc. The place is all about whether you're a good human or not. Period. If you got offended or feelings hurt - then it is what it is. Beer is nice and cold and cheap. Spark up a conversation with any regular and you'll understand the place. If bartender was "rude" it's probably because you're too sensitive. Get over yourself. Self pity filled and/or egotistical folks need not go. PS - u bring ur own food. Awesome bar. Close to home and great bartenders. The place has had run-ins with TABC so expect to be asked for your ID, and they will not serve you if you are already buzzed. The place might come off as strict because of this, but once you get past that, it's a good place to hangout and have a drink. read more

DIVE BAR it is!! Kinda place I'd only go with a group ;) They have karaoke some nights and the typical redneck bar dudes who think they own the pool tables just cause they have some quarters on it - yet are nowhere to be found when it's their turn to play. This place is an authentic duplicate of any small town Texas bar, except it's in Houston, which is extremely hard to find. Patti the bartender was EXTREMELY friendly. She introduced me to the few patron at the bar, and she used my name the rest of the night. People knew each other, and when a young Mexican kid came in to drown out his problems in a beer, the staff and patrons were happy to listen. This place is not for uppity snobs who like things clean and fancy. They can fuck off. This is for real people with real emotions and real problems who need a drink to take the edge off. Good times here all around. As far as I know, there's no bar like this in Dallas. (But outside of Dallas- a dime a dozen!) Next time I'm in Houston, I'll be back. read more

Total dive bar. Tons of rednecks and even a Black person or two which I find cool since I'm a Black lady. No one gave me weird looks. Everyone's family over here. Amidst an abundance of tacquerias (there are probably at least 3 Tacqueria Cancun restaurants in a 2 mile radius) and scattered dollar stores with every billboard in Spanish - the Blue Lagoon Club is an oasis of goodness in this un-gentrified area of Spring Branch. It's on a very short list of bars north of I10 on Gessner that I would feel comfortable going alone (my list doesn't include any other bars... maybe Hot Rods and Harleys, but that's a stretch), and I'm known for being overly comfortable in really uncomfortable places. Whether it's day or night, upon entering you're most likely going to need to give your eyes a good 10 minutes to adjust to the darkness. After your senses have been adequately gathered, there will be a good assemblage of regulars spattered about in a pretty unusual bar set up in front of you that basically requires weaving past them awkwardly (and as you've probably guessed, the customers are generally white folk with an average age range of 40-70). It's when you get to the bar that the true charm of The Blue Lagoon is unleashed, though. I don't know if it's because I'm so good looking, but they only ask you for your name when starting a tab (I can barely expect that at bars I frequent), and it might be worth mentioning that when you do decide to tab out, you'll probably think they left a few beers off - this is mostly just because it's so ridiculously cheap (beer for under $3 is pretty rare these days). I usually start jamming songs into the jukebox on first arrival at a bar, but on this occasion I didn't want to play anything so I could listen to regulars' stories from afar. They weren't really good stories or anything, but there's something about a 60 year old woman talking about a 22 year old boyfriend she had when she was in her early 30's that I can't just ignore. (Worth noting: When the jukebox was turned on, the sound system was pretty okay.) Oh, yeah, they also have an array of slot machines [for entertainment purposes only] if you're a gamblin' man. I don't know what to say about the ceiling. Either they painted it a tie-dye of earth tones or the years prior when smoking was allowed permanently scarred it. So, I guess it's kind of a blend of beauty and nastiness. They also had food sitting out for my enjoyment - I don't eat food that's sitting out at bars (especially underneath those awful ceiling tiles), though, so I can't exactly weigh in on what it was or how good it tasted. I may have eaten some Lays chips if I'd had a few more drinks. Just past the jukebox you'll find a pair of pool tables... I wasn't in much of a pool playing mood, so I can't say for sure what sort of state of repair they were in, but one of them did look to have been recently redone. The back door opens up to mostly a bunch of junk piled up everywhere - maybe it had more of a purpose than that, but I pretty much just saw junk - that and old dudes smoking cigarettes. A bench circles a massive tree in the middle of the yard, and off to the right must be where they cook hot dogs... I say this because the permanent tiny charcoal grill probably wasn't big enough to fit anything else. Also, if you've got a fresh catch, I'm pretty sure there's a fish cleaning station out there... if you'd like to eat your fish while facing the fence, you'll be happy to find 4 or 5 wooden chairs all facing away from the center of the yard. There are also painted two-dimensional birdhouses all over the place in the event you're a bird lover. In summary, this is place was awesome. I like cheap beer, I like jukeboxes, and I like it when the bartender remembers my name and doesn't make me give them a credit card until I'm done. I'm a simple man, I don't need a lot. Given the choice between this and the bars across the freeway at City Centre, there is absolutely no competition. @gahteeriffico read more

It's official! I have found a new dive bar with personality. This little gem is tucked away from the glitz and glamour right off 1-10 near Gessner. It has a definate Cheers feel to it, and I instantly felt welcomed when I got there. The drinks are SUPER cheap like most dive bars, but they are reasonable (about $6) They also have karaoke and a cool little outside patio. It almost seems like something I would find near my parents house in a small town with population 3000. The bartender was an older lady, was very sweet, and easy to talk to. There were all different types of people, from different walks of life, and all were more than happy to talk! It's no fuss, no muss, and VERY SIMPLE. They do have a jukebox we rocked out to. In response to another review, I am white. Am pretty sure it's "outsiders" they don't like. Did I ask for the wrong beer?? I don't know. There was only 1 bar tender that seemed to acknowledge me at an empty bar....yet I saw at least 2 other bar tenders back there who never even acknowledged me. What is sad...I was at at the hard rock bar earlier this eve...every seat at the bar was full yet every bar tender asked me how I was......sad to sit at an empty bar in my own neighborhood and feel more welcomed at a tourist trap....just sayin read more

This is my favorite dive bar in Houston. I live near here so I may be biased, but this place is awesome. The drinks are cheap. I mean like you're going to double check your tab at the end of the night cheap. And the vibe is great! This is a real local bar, not some hipster place. You come at 5 and it's full of people who just got off work. Come here at midnight and it's full of restaurant staff who just got off work. And everyone here is super cool. The bartenders are great and the drinks are strong. Karaoke on Friday nights and free food if you get here at the right time. I couldn't recommend this place more. read more

Total garbage dive bar. Cited by TABC a couple of years ago. The parking lot is not well lit at night, located in a really sketchy part if spring branch. Security cameras are from the 80s, I've had my car keyed twice and there's no videotape to go to in case of any incidents. The list goes on and on. read more
