My husband ate here in 2014 and talked about how great the mac n cheese was. Being in town we decided to try it out together. Not sure what happened since then but it food was mediocre at best. Hmmm . . . .have you ever noticed how many restaurants are named after animals in this town? I almost laughed when someone suggested I head to the Blue Moose as only nights before I had been at some place named after a frog. But naming aside, this is quickly turning into one of my fav places in Topeka. It's got a great outdoor patio, plenty of seating inside, a lively bar area and drink specials that will have you coming back night after night. And the staff go out of their way to make sure everything you want is taken care of. Bartender extraordinaire, Shane, has taken great care of me during many of my visits. The other great thing about the Blue Moose is the people. Some of the nicest locals frequent this bar so I am never alone for long talking to those around me and learning about this part of Kansas. As for the menu- it's very broad and the food is quite good. My favorite right now are the fish tacos, but I've also had the chicken which is quite good too as are their salads. They have a daily happy hour special from 4-6 which includes half price apps as well as drink specials. And while there are drink specials each night, check out Tuesdays where 10 bottles of wine are only $10. That's cheaper than a drink! Blue Moose Bar? This was one of the best meals I've had in a while, barring my recent stint in LA. You're like, "Luke, stop with these damn 5 star ratings." Chill out, dude. I haven't even been giving 5 stars lately. The reason I did today, was because of the lo cal (not so-cal, even though that's what I'm missing) options for this meal! I ordered the grilled ancho salmon medium rare, and I substituted the dumb ass rice pilaf and non-Popeye-like sautéed spinach with the whipped cauliflower (veggie heaven) and somethin-or-other-succotash. I'm a freakin' genius!!!!!!!!!!! The cauliflower is like mashed potatoes, the succotash ain't sufferin' at all, and the salmon was charred like a Mickey fickey! Order this, fooool!!!!!!! All this was a result of reconfiguration of items from the under 600 calorie menu. I'm going home to search for recipes on the internet so that I can dream of cooking this stuff and then never ever make it in my own home. This used to be a favorite spot of mine and now it's just disappointing. They truly need a change of management, change/add to the menu and DEFINITELY get new cocktails! They now only offer very select Happy Hour drinks and they continue to raise their prices while lowering the quality. read more

So this was the second time we have had dinner here. First go round was quite pleasant. We came very early. Hardly anyone there so service was great. Food was great. I really like the ambience and stuff. This time we came with quite a large group. There were 12 of us. The service was fine. My biggest complaint was my food this time. The first time we came we had the onion ring appetizer and it was great. This time the onions they used or the outside portions so were inedible for the most part. The biggest thing about them was the breading. Although the breading is quite delicious, that's all you are getting. The onions are sliced, very thinly and the breading is five times as thick as the onion. We had a couple that were just balls of breading for $10 I would expect a little higher quality. I ordered the new chicken fried steak meal. I also requested the grilled zucchini instead of broccoli. The grilled zucchini came out with barely any grill marks on it and it's hard as a rock. It was practically raw and I couldn't even get my fork through it. The chicken fried steak was really delicious. It was pounded very thin so is more of a cutlet. The gravy is quite flavorful. The mashed potatoes were fresh not boxed so that was much appreciated. Bad part about the gravy is there was barely any on the potatoes or the chicken fried steak. so I asked the server for a little bit more. What she brought out was not even the same gravy. It was a salty, dark brown substance not even sure what meal that would've even went with. Needless to say, I just boxed it up and I'll doctor it up at home. I pretty disappointed. read more

We came here on a Sunday right before the "church" crowd started filing in. The buffet was full of a number of delicious choices including sausage, maple ham, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, fruit, pastas, mac n cheese, meatloaf, chicken tenders, fried fish, salad and an omelet station. I was pleased with the flavors and choices. What I was not pleased with, was the enormous line where people dallied and hemmed and hawed as though we had all morning to get through the line. If I lived in Topeka, I probably wouldn't do this buffet again because we noted that it was slow the whole time we were there and we overheard several other people complaining about the time it took to get though the line. read more

I had lunch here with some clients and thought it was a nice, if unremarkable place for a meal. The décor and atmosphere is really nice - think rustic up-north sports bar but with upscale touches. They have a large patio which looks like a great place to enjoy some drinks when the weather is nicer. The menu is generally "all American favorites" like burgers, wraps, salads and some entrees. Most people should have no issues finding something they'll like. I originally went with the black bean burger and was told they were out "because the truck won't come until tomorrow" - so they're definitely from Sysco which is disappointing. My back up was the turkey burger and that definitely wasn't made in house either. It wasn't bad, just nothing special. I do appreciate that you can sub fries for a salad, fruit or coleslaw meaning you can be a little healthier. Our server was really nice and attentive with refilling drinks -always appreciated. Overall, nothing I'd be rushing back for but considering most of the other options in the area are chains, Blue Moose is probably your best bet. read more

Sunday brunch was AMAZING! The variety of foods offered ranged from French Toast to Fried Chicken and everything in between. The food was incredible. I went back 3 times in order to try everything that struck my fancy. And at no time did they run out of food, they did however have a hard time keeping up with the demand for plates! My favorites were: French Toast, Sausage Links, Biscuits and Gravy, Custom Omlete, Mashed Potatoes, Fried Chicken, Spinach Artichoke Dip, Orange Muffins, Cheesecake Bites and the standout above all others favorite: Mac & Cheese. After a day on the road, The Blue Moose was just what we were looking for! They have something on their menu for anyone ranging from steaks to specialty mac & cheese to nachos. My traveling buddy ordered the petite filet, but switched out all the sides (which they had no complaints about doing. The filet came out slightly undercooked, but my friend did send it back when given the option. I ordered the chicken nachos. They were delicious! They had a lot of "stuff" which is always a win. We were a bit sad that half of their taps were broken, so we ordered sangrias instead of beers. We were not disappointed when we tried the sangrias, though! Wow! I had the red wine sangria and my friend had the white. They were both delicious. The red was less sweet than the white, so you can keep that in mind when deciding which one to get (because you HAVE) to get one :) read more

Second time at Blue Moose and both times I was impressed. It's a good ranging menu with some off the mainstream choices yet no so crazy you can't grab simple comfort foods. Happy hour is not gimmicky, there are honest good deals on drinks. The sangria is great. The chicken nachos appetizer is plentiful, but boring. Dinner wise we both had mac and cheese- seriously was A+. I had mine with broccoli, asparagus, pork belly and truffle oil. Amazeballs. They were fine, but were planks instead of chips, which I prefer. We also did not get enough dipping sauce for everyone. I had the shrimp and chicken curry dish, which I liked. First time visit and last time. I brought my visiting guest to celebrate with brunch and was disappointed. Cold coffee right at the start and waited 20 minutes to get it replaced. Service is slow because servers are not stationed in one area but all over the place. The food has the potential to be great if attentions to detail were better. Went on Mother's Day and had a reservation for 1:30. Arrived at 1:10 and checked in. While I wait I hit up the bar for some bottomless mimosas. The bartender was friendly and had me pay at the bar and gave me a receipt to show my server. I'm drinking mimosas while waiting and I got a few under my belt before getting seated. The hostess did recommend that we go ask people to leave to hurry up our wait, which seems like the craziest suggestions a hostess could make, but clearly they were not prepared to deal with the numbers. After about an hour waiting and 45 minutes after our reservation we were seated. The waitress came over and began to do her thing. I asked for another mimosa and she went about her business. She brought drinks and no mimosa. I asked her about it and she said "did you pay for the mimosas already?" I said I had and I placed the ticket the bartender gave me under the glass for that reason. She said well that doesn't say closed so how do I know you payed for it. Not sure if she was joking or not I said I don't work here so I don't know how your tickets work, but the bartender gave me this, so I dunno. Her response "if I go ask the bartender if you payed for that he will say yes, right?!" I was shocked and honestly angry at that. Very unprofessional! The buffet was frequently missing items and no staff was interested in helping. I'd go for bottomless mimosas again, but not much else. read more
