I hosted a business lunch for six today and it was a huge success. The service was excellent, the wine was chilled perfectly and the food was all served quickly and exactly to order. Two orders of the cod special, two burgers of the day with beet salad and two orders of salmon from the menu. All of the fish was perfectly prepared and the sides were delicious. This is my first choice for a special occasion lunch, and the seafood specials never disappoint! read more

I had the pleasure of staying at Blue for almost a week. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Sully and his team made you feel right at home and very welcome. The rooms were immaculate and well maintained and the food was some of the best I have had in St. John's. I fell in love with the pork tenderloin which was served with cornbread. I also had a small side of Gouda mashed potatoes. In a word, amazing. I will definitely be staying there again next time I am in the area. read more

The place is well decorated, there was no wait for a table. Table was dressed neatly. Coffee was welcome and very good. Breakfast was not up to the price they ask. Waitress did not take our order properly, both sunny eggs came with one over easy totally cooked. Asked whole wheat and received white bread. Oh well... It took 45 minutes and there is no point to wait again if the food is not what you expected/ordered. Coffee was extra, add taxes and tip you are at about $50. This is not a place we will return. At that price you have fruits, perhaps smoked salmon and it is fulfilled to the tee. read more

Breakfast is easily the best in town. Sadly, non attentive and uncaring wait staff spoil the experience. The portions are well prepared and presented. We arrived Sunday morning without a booking and despite three staff standing at the counter waited 6 minutes before they even spoke to us. Not even a "We'll be with you in 5 minutes!" Basically we were ignored and then asked if we had a booking. Once seated the poor service continued with clearly untrained staff having to be asked for basics like water, coffee and fresh pepper. Bottom line; the service is so poor it detracts from the otherwise excellent meal and room. read more

I went with my wife. We cook often and eat out often as well, but avoid places that specialize in grease infused menu items. Blue isn't one of those places. The decor and the general vibe was pretty good, but we went for the food. We are foodies with experiences in many countries, and like most of the "so-called" better restaurants, the prices were mostly as we expected, if not a little higher. With soup apps at $9+(CAN) you get the idea. No bread or any kind of complimentary starter was offered as we waited for our apps. I had the Curry Cauliflower soup, my wife the Squash Soup. Both were very good, though neither came with any bread either. It was then we realized we had no napkins. Doh! Quickly rectified, and then after a reasonable wait, the waiter returned to inquire whether we had left room for dessert! He was obviously confused - we had not even had our entrées at this point! The mains finally came. My wife had the Pot au Feu; seafood served in a hot bowl. The Pot au Feu at 29+ did not seem too fresh. The scallops, in particular, had an "off" scent. (and she knows her scallops) In all, there were two scallops, two shrimp, around 12 mussels, and one piece of rather bland salmon (over cooked) There was a lot of liquid (soup?), and for veg, the equivalent of about 1/2 small sliced carrot - not a starch nor a green veg to be seen at all in this main dish. Not what was expected at the price point of $29. I had the grilled salmon, a simple prep to be sure. It was as good as any I had, but no better than most. It was served with a measure of tartar type sauce drizzled on the plate and small square (2" X 2" approx.) of scalloped potato with cheese, the cheese on bottom being overly browned from the pan and next to impossible to cut right through with just a fork. For veg it came with about a fork full of sautéed arugula. This, at $28+(CAN) seems a little bit too pricey. Considering the prep time and the fact that the salmon was obviously farmed - not wild Atlantic or Pacific, though I know that's near impossible to come by nowadays, this was mediocre at best. (They must have been short on any kind of green veg that evening.) Add in, a middle of the road glass of pino for 10 bucks each and you end up with a nice bill, and a not so nice dining experience. (ambiance and service generally excluded.) Would we return? Probably not, considering the abundant choices of fine dining restaurants in St. John's now. I wouldn't be able to recommend it to others, but wouldn't try to talk you out of it either. Your experience may be better. Considering this was on a slow early Monday evening, I hope it wasn't as good as they get at Blue On Water. read more

Have had two pretty good experiences at Blue on Water. I liked all the Newfoundland fare on the menu. For brunch, tried the toutons with molasses and also syrup, but I have to say that molasses is a clear winner to accompany for these fluffy, dough-like pancakes. For dinner, had really good cod tongues and caesar salad. The martinis were yummy. Would recommend this place as a good place to take visitors. read more

Not easy to find parking on street and would walk another hill to eat here again. Delicious eggs Benedict with pea meal bacon and tiny round potatoes rather than chopped large potatoes. Our dinner experience at this restaurant this week was like none I have had in my entire life...and unfortunately, not in a good way. First, I should clarify that the food was very, very good. I had the salmon and my husband had pork and both were delicious. Overpriced at $32 and $36 respectively? Yes, but still delicious. The disappointing part was every single element of our dinner experience from beginning to end other than the food - I don't even know where to begin. The dichotomy between the food and service experience was so vast. The table was dirty, there was sticky spots left on it; our waiter told us 1 of 3 available specials of the evening, which we didn't realize until we had ordered and the next party came in and we heard a different server tell them; the server poured our wine from carafe to glass like it was a race and he needed to dump it in ASAP; after our appetizers and before our dinner, our server took our bread away - clearly, we should have eaten faster; he filled his time in between serving by drying dishes immediately behind our table and clanging the dishes in our ears; lastly, when he brought us the bill, he forgot the candies so did a lengthened body stretch to grab the worthers original, stuffed his hand in the jar with it tilted sideways and managed to grab a couple candies. I am not someone to trash restaurants lightly and felt increasingly sad throughout the entire meal for the kitchen staff. At a minimum, I expect restaurant service to measure up to the price and quality of food served and in this instance, I am saddened to say that was not the case as I've never lived such an incongruous dinner experience in 20 plus years. This is easily fixable for the restaurant - start at front of house. read more

Went here with a good buddy of mine. Thought that since there was a limited menu, things should be really good... right? Well, we were never offered water first nor last..... which I could easily overlook. However, I ordered the duck. The waitress never asked me how I wanted it cooked and quite frankly I was so caught up in the conversation, I didn't think to request. Most chefs will cook it medium rare, however, this dish was just a hair off raw. It was also the chewiest, most sinewy duck I've ever had. The rice and sauce it was in was tasty but a touch on the salty side. Would I go back.... with all of the great options in downtown St John's, probably not. read more

This is a place worth multiple visits. For appetizers we had tuna tartar and cod tongues. Both are items we would get again. Our mains were the elk and the lamb. Both were exceptional. Seasoned perfectly, cooked the same, and the crust on the lamb was like candy. So good. For dessert we had the bread pudding and the carrot cake. The carrot cake was divine. The bread pudding was average. It was the only item that was not above par. Overall great meal. read more

I went here with friends for brunch and ordered the Duck BLT with a side caesar salad. The duck BLT was competent but not really memorable. The caesar salad didn't have any dressing. The brought some extra dressing but it tasted like it was from a bottle, and still not very good. One person in the group ordered a large caesar salad with some chicken for her entree, and keep expressing that it was tasteless. Adding more dressing didn't help. Overall, the restaurant seemed competent but really a place I'd recommend. read more

Had a wonderful dinner here this evening. Mussels, beet salad, lamb, steak, for my wife and me. The atmosphere was perfect. Not too LOUD, but it was busy. The hostess and waiter were excellent and the place was very clean. Sort of unique bathroom, too. They brought some bread that can't be beat (w/olive oil and balsamic). Service was terrible and food quality has been dropping off for the past 6 months. However it took 45 mins for the steak to arrive and instead of a medium rare as requested it came well done! Sent it back and had to wait another 15 mins. I brought a date here lastnight and was very impressed. It was my first time entering this establishment and I was pleasantly surprised at the look at feel of the place. I had a reservation just to be safe but, it seemed that 7 o'clock on a Sunday night was slow for them because we were the only ones there! The menu was simple to look through but the dishes all sounded fantastic. I got bone marrow & scallops for an appetizer. I was honestly just curious to try it but, when I did I was shocked at how delicious it was. My main course was Atlantic Salmon with a mix of different vegetables which was also amazing. The salmon was perfect! The service was great throughout our entire meal. The restaurant was beautiful so, we checked the bar out as well and it looked as nice as the restaurant did. I'm extremely impressed with this place, my experience was awesome and I will be recommending and going back there! read more

Big disappointment. We went here for dinner on Friday night and it was terrible. The service was fine but food was barely edible. They brought bread and vinegar and oil to our table which was nice until we had some bread which was a little on the stale side. Then came our dinners. I ordered the chicken dish and the chicken was so dry I had to force it down with water. There were mushrooms on the plate as well but you wouldn't know what they were as they were over cooked and tough and were over salted. I drank a lot of water with my dinner. I only ate about half of my dinner. My husband ordered the braised short rib. It was cold and tough as well. He ate about half of it. When the waitress came by to pick up our plates she didn't even ask if we wanted them packed up - maybe she knew they were bad. The dinner was pretty pricy so we had higher expectations. We were very disappointed maybe it was an off night but I wouldn't recommend this restaurant. read more
