We booked the trip based on the brochure which touted unspoiled beauty and wilderness. They offer pick up and drop off. They even mention how superior their tours are as they don't kayak in urban areas. What they don't say is that you are ferried to a "working" dock which houses many unoccupied boats that appear to be abandoned and if you use the bathroom, you are escorted to the toilet carrying toilet paper and hand sanitizer. In terms of the guide, Sarah, she was great and we appreciated her knowledge but she didn't have much to work with. The water was crystal clear and the mangroves were amazing to see. In terms of wildlife, we saw a conch, a juvenile nurse shark and jellyfish. We saw a pelican and an egret. The planes from the navy as well as commercial planes went overhead constantly so the trip was far from peaceful and I'm guessing most of the wildlife went elsewhere. As my husband says, if you want to be out on the water, it's fine but if you want to see wildlife and have a nicer experience, go elsewhere read more

We went on a private night kayak tour with Chad. It was awesome! We left a bit before the sunset and kayaked out to the mangroves. Chad knows all about the sea life, the islands, and has a ton of fun history. On our trip he pointed out a ton of sea creatures picking a bunch from the sea floor and showing them to us up close. We got to see an awesome sunset and, as a big surprise, kayaked by some manatees. We went through the mangroves with headlamps, which was really cool. The whole thing was great. Don't let the "less than beautiful" loading area fool you. The owner was very nice and knowledgeable. He had some great "dad " jokes. The kayaks are all clean and in good condition. The oars/paddles were also in good condition. I would like to have seen the whole area be cleaned up. I can see how it could scare some folks away with all the junk lying around. Life jackets were not mandatory for adults but were available if you felt safer with one. The guide was also very nice and knowledgeable of the mangroves and the ecosystem within and around them. While the water portion of the tour was good, the spot the kayaks put out was horrible. It was in an industrial area, with no buildings owned by the company, just a boat slip, you must walk on other people's property to get to the water. There are no bathrooms owned by this company, and you must follow the leader to bathroom access in a neighboring business and use the toilet paper provided in a basket. The tour leader was rude, and had zero people skills. The equipment was old and broken. I cannot believe the fact that this was housed at a floating trailer park and taxi body shop has not made all of the reviews. I do not recommend. We took a group on this trip, and all we could do was laugh at how bad it was. To say we were embarrassed doesn't begin to cover how we felt upon arrival. read more

Seriously, James spotted a nurse shark in the water, tried to catch it, missed, and then chased it around the lagoon until he was successful. Snatching jellyfish (which do sting), spotting conch, enticing hermit crabs to show themselves, all of it for $50 per person? There is not a better value in the Keys. I had a sea urchin walk across my hand. I didn't even know they moved, it was seriously awesome. What makes it especially great is they do all of it wish such passion, these guys love what they do and it shows. Also, though it is outside of Key West, don't be dissuaded! This was honestly one of the best tours I did in key west hands down! I randomly was googling things to do in KW and came across a nighttime kayaking Mangrove tour, which seemed different to me so I went ahead and booked it, and convinced my friend to come along too. I was worried I wouldn't be able to book the tour solo because I was originally a party of one, but the guides kept checking in with me and updating me on the status of the tour. By nightfall others had booked and by then I had a friend to go with me, so there were no worries. You could tell the guides were about customer service. We had a gentleman from the company pick us up from our accommodations, took us to get pastries while we waited for the other parties to arrive, and was just all around friendly. The larger tours companies imo aren't as personable, so I was happy to support a local business. Once we got on the water, our tour guide (shoutout to Sarah with an H) was wonderful! She was very patient dealing with me and my partners struggle kayaking skills. Lol. She gave us many interesting facts about the land and sea creatures too. She pulled up starfish, sea slugs, and showed us bioluminescence in the water. As a student who just got done taking Bio2, it was fascinating to see everything I studied come to life! If you are a nature lover, are active, and love the outdoors I would highly recommend this tour! The guides are awesome and they supply you with everything you need on the water. If you want a stress free nature oriented trip in KW and relaxation, book with them-it's a no brainer. read more

This was our second time taking a kayak tour with Andy - he's amazing! Our first trip was in 2016 for our honeymoon, and we went again last week. Andy knows so much about the marine life, biology, geology of the area - stick close to him and hear all of his stories and explanations. He keeps his eye out for so much under the water and really wants you to see it all, but much of the marine life blends into the waterscape, so make sure stay near him, so you can see what he sees. This time we saw almost everything - a manatee, sharks, sting rays, eagle rays, jelly fish - Andy pulled a conch out of the water so we could hold it and I saw it's little eyes! So cool. He's also mindful of keeping the ocean healthy and safe, which I appreciated. We will definitely go back and do this tour again when we're back in Key West! read more

I found this location off Yelp as we have always wanted to kayak while in Key West. I found some discrepancies in his website, but what he offered was way better than we had hoped for. No time limit kayaking for one price. We were turned loose on our own which was a little scary, but we found some amazing mangrove secret locations which I will never forget. I was afraid of sailing out to sea and we were almost dumped over multiple times by speeding boats, but it was a nice workout. I would recommend some kind of flag or flair to return to the business. I did the night kayak tour TWICE in the month of June, each time with a different friend. Both of my friends and I absolutely loved this excursion. It's time and money well spent on the water. Andy was our guide both times, and he is extremely knowledgeable about the biodiversity and history of the Keys and has a trained eye to spot many plants and animals within the water; without Andy, I would not have been able to see 90% of the creatures we saw! To name just some of the plants and animals we witnessed: mangroves, bioluminescent algae, sharks, octopus, lion fish, shrimp, snapper, lobsters, crabs, jellyfish, starfish, and sea urchins. The bioluminescent plankton alone made the evenings magical - it's like looking at thousands of fireflies in the water. One of the evenings we were graced with a stunning sunset that lit up the entire sky. In addition to seeing so many aquatic animal species, paddling through the mangroves was a highlight. For anyone looking for a little adventure in the Keys, I strongly recommend this tour. read more

I booked the Boca Chica Marine Life Kayak Tour after reading a blog review about it, plus seeing the positive Yelp reviews. Unfortunately the tour didn't meet our expectations. I wouldn't necessarily say it's a bad tour, but it wasn't a good fit for us. I'm glad we gave it a try and did something different on this trip to Key West, but it's not something I want to do again. Overall I'd say that our experience didn't match what I was led to believe from everything I read beforehand. -The website says this tour is good for beginners and pros alike. I disagree that the tour is good for beginners. I've kayaked a few times before but only for short distances. Being out on the water for 2 1/2 hours is more grueling than I expected. I was sore and tired and had a blister on my hand by the time we finished. I started off the tour very excited about seeing a different side of the Keys. But by the time we got about halfway through I just wasn't having fun. Normally I'm someone who tries to get my money's worth out of everything, but I think if there had been a way to cut the tour short and just head back on our own, I would have taken it. -The website mentions that you can bring your own beverages in a small cooler. We did this, but the cooler was more trouble than it was worth. They'll provide you with water at the start of the tour. If you prefer something other than water, go ahead and bring a soda or sports drink, but just bring a bottle and don't bother with the cooler. We were so busy paddling that there was barely enough time to drink anything. -Sunscreen is a definite must! This was probably a misunderstanding on my part, but I thought that quite a bit of the tour would be spent within the mangroves, as in we would be surrounded by trees. We spent maybe 10 minutes navigating through a short section of the mangroves, but the rest of the tour was on open water in direct sunlight. I would have liked more time in the mangroves. -The highlights of the tour were seeing a starfish, conch, and jellyfish up close. We also saw a few sting rays swimming around. But that was it. I expected to see a lot more. Now I will say that the tour guide pointed out other sea creatures in the water, but we were never able to spot them because they were either too far out or swimming too fast. This could be considered "user error" but I want to set realistic expectations that you may not see all that much. -We didn't "click" with our guide. In my opinion, I think he would have been a better guide for more experienced kayakers, not beginners. He didn't provide very much guidance or direction, at least not that we could hear. The whole tour, we felt like we had no idea where we were headed, and were simply trying to keep up with our guide. However the problem was that he would switch directions on a whim, so we'd catch up and then he'd head off in a different direction. I felt as though he found us an annoyance, rather than trying to help us have a good experience. -I recommend you take the option for hotel pick up. We were picked up in a comfortable van, and I found the van driver more personable than our guide. At the end of the tour, it was nice to have someone else drive us "home" rather than put our wet, sweaty selves into our own car. Note: our pickup time was 9:45am for the 10:30am tour. There was one couple already in the van, and then we stopped for another family of 3. I thought it was good that the couple that was picked up first was also dropped off first, so total travel time was pretty even for everyone. This was just our experience, and of course YMMV. Maybe it was just an off day. Obviously other people had more positive things to say, so I wouldn't discourage anyone from giving the tour a try. My goal with this review is simply to provide a honest, alternative viewpoint so you can make your own decision about whether the tour is right for you. read more

This was our first trip to key west & looked forward to seeing the island from kayaks at sunset with hopes of seeing nature. My husband and I are moderately experienced kayakers & hoped to see things we wouldn't get to see in our hometown. Andy picked us up in van - there were 8 adults & 2 kids already in van...thank goodness everyone was small, we managed to fit! When we pulled up to park on street & led to some bizarre warehouse that housed smashed cars, beat up boats & most god awful smell, I tried to stay open minded. Andy got us all in our kayaks without issue and we set out. The broken down boat near our launch area was feeding pelicans so we were bombarded by hungry pelicans...little concerning but the smell of diesel & dead fish was overwhelming. It was getting close to sunset when we made our way into mangroves. This was good trip for the science/engineer/kids in our group, but not for us. We saw some sea urchin, nurse shark swam by & saw beautiful conch shell with hermit crab but that was it. We navigated through mangroves & as sun set Andy provided us with headlamps which was nice, although didn't help to see anything in water as there wasn't anything to really see. A sight I couldn't get over were all the sunken, partially sunk & abandoned boats!! I commented/asked several times "is this where boats come to die", "is this Bermuda Triangle of kw", "why so many boats sunken or abandoned"? Andy finally replied "the marinas cost about $3k a month"! Alrighty then...that explained a lot. Also, sunset happened when we were in mangroves. read more
