I was really looking forward to kayaking in the mangroves, but unfortunately it was much too challenging for me. I have only ever kayaked on lakes or very gentle rivers before, and have always enjoyed it so much. But with the high winds and convoluted terrain, this was not beginner-friendly. More disappointingly, when I asked my guide, Heather, for advice about how to stop my boat from drifting, she retorted: "Oh, so you weren't paying attention when I explained that earlier!?" I WAS paying attention, but I needed further explanation. Why should I be shamed for not understanding everything immediately? Why shouldn't I ask a clarifying question on a beginner tour? The guide seemed totally disinterested in watching how people were doing, going so fast ahead, even when other people were far back behind her. The company really needed to have a second guide in the back, or to have us divided into more/less experienced groups. I would have much rather been in a gentler group and gone a shorter distance but felt safe than to be belittled and struggling to maneuver my way. It was just such a negative vibe for something that should have been uplifting and fun. In positive news, it is really beautiful, and (as a scientist myself), I found the information about the ecology fascinating. I just would recommend a different tour to anyone who isn't very confident in their skills. read more

What a fun time exploring and kayaking here. We went on the two hour kayak tour and loved every minute of it. Parking is pretty easy and the staff here are very friendly and helpful. My husband and I shared a tandem kayak and off we went on tour with the best guide Heather. She was extremely knowledgeable about the flora, fauna and all the living creatures. Heather was able to reach into the water and pull out various sea life like sea sponges, Cassiopeia Jellyfish, and a starfish. We were able to touch and hold all three of these life forms but we put them back in the water quickly. We learned so much about the mangrove trees and how they can withstand hurricanes. Their root systems are shallow, no more than 30 feet below the soil surface. They are so strong and are able to protect each other. We kayaked inside the mangroves and felt the quiet and the shade. Once inside, it was a little difficult to maneuver the kayak but we made it out eventually. We really had the best day on the water and I would highly recommend if you are in Key West, stop here for a some Florida fun! read more

Best experience while in Key West! I booked the guided 2 hour kayak tour along with my husband and it was fun! The check-in was easy, you have to sign waivers and once you arrive you have to wait for the tour time and others to arrive. During this time there is small restaurant and bar you can visit while waiting. Parking is a bit challenging, there aren't many parking spots. Once out in the water it is a bit tough to maneuver the kayak but you can grab onto the actual mangrove branches or use your paddles to continue on route. Heather was our tour guide and she was amazing! She was extremely knowledgeable about the area, the species around, and she allowed us to see up close some of the animals she saw along the way. It is obvious she loves her job and the critters around! The water isn't deep, there are areas that are extremely shallow so don't worry too much about flipping the kayak. We went mid May and the water was lukewarm/ warm, not cold at all! Tip: use sunscreen even if it seems a bit cloudy, and take water to drink. read more

After exploring other options, we chose Lazy Dog Adventures for our kayak tour because it was affordable, and both my 14 and 17-year-olds could participate. Our tour guide, Brett, was fantastic! Attentive, knowledgeable, and super accommodating, he guided us through some rough waters and tight mangrove tunnels, and not once did I feel insecure. We had an awesome afternoon kayaking in Key West. We called in the morning and they let us know they were pretty busy but afternoon would be good. We arrived just after 2 and the girls working were so nice! They set us up with two kayaks and a map and let us go out without a guide since there were only about 2 hours left in our time. The water was amazing and the mangrove areas were so beautiful!! Hard to believe this was tucked in a busy boat channel and near a main road in Key West. We saw fish and were looking for the sharks that the people coming into the dock saw...we missed the sharks but all our other sights were amazing!! The rental prices were super reasonable and there was a great little watering hole next door when we finished up. It's very easy to get to as well...I highly recommend kayaking with them! read more

While in Key West, we wanted to go kayaking. Lazy Dog Adventures rents kayaks and paddleboards and is dog friendly. So that was where we went. When we arrived, a friendly staff member behind the counter greeted us. And two sweet doggos came around the corner and greeted us and our dog as well. We signed the waivers while another staff member got us ready for some kayaking. Then, he showed us a map of where we can take the kayak. If we ever got lost, we can call the phone number on the map for help. Then the staff member pushed our kayak into the water and we were off! As we kayaked toward the mangroves, we saw a LARGE monitor lizard, probably 4 - 5 ft long, just walking slowly on the shore. It was cool since we were not expecting to see one. We paddled on and saw a sign outside the mangroves about gators being federally protected. We didn't think much of it and paddled into the mangroves. Inside the mangroves, the water was shallower, it was difficult to maneuver our paddles since any large movements would cause us to hit the mangroves. And if your paddle got caught in the mangroves, you could flip the kayak. So, we paddled very cautiously. A log resembling a gator's head startled us. Thankfully, the water is clear enough to see what's swimming beneath, and there was no gator. We paddled on until we reached a dead end and turned back around exiting the mangroves where we entered. As we paddled back the way we came, we saw the staff member who got us ready earlier and a couple kayaking and paddleboarding. They had dropped their phone in the water while taking pictures, and the staff member was super nice to come to their rescue. He went above and beyond, diving into the water, searching for this phone. After a few attempts, he found the phone! Thankfully there was no gator in the water! My husband and I kayaked for a bit more with our dog before heading back on land. Some parts of the waters are definitely yuckier than others, but we were dressed for the occasion. I have to say it has been an eventful adventure. Upon disembarking our kayak, we got to speak with the staff member who saved the couple's phone. We asked him about the gators section, and he said once in a while, you might see one, but they are rare. I was pretty relieved to hear that because I wouldn't know what we would do if we did see one. Before we left Lazy Dog Adventures, we were given a 10% coupon to eat at Hurricane Hole, the restaurant next door. While we hadn't plan to eat there initially, we were now enticed to use this coupon! Overall, the staff members were super nice and really took good care of their customers. If you ever feel like going kayaking in Key West, I'd highly recommend Lazy Dog Adventures. read more

Very bad experience. We arrived a bit late for our tour but only missed the second half of the guide speech. The guide even offered to start again but the manager insisted that we mustn't join. Then we were again refused to switch to a kayak rental for we lack the experience of paddling. The thing is, we called an hour ahead when we thought we might be late due to the bad traffic, and she mentioned we could switch to a rental mentioning nothing about our experience. It's not the $140 fee that we already spent, it's the whole disappointment that could have been saved if she could just told us no need to come if never paddled before. LYNSI led us on an amazing half-day eco boat tour filled with a pontoon ride to mangroves, kayaking, snorkeling and (home-packed) lunch in the crystal clear water! We used Lyft to arrive by 9am, Lazy Dog was easy to find, our group of 3-generations had fun learning, swimming and relaxing together. The kids loved the manatee sighting. Tip #1: Enjoy a beer or lunch at the marina cantina next door. Tip #2: Within walking distance is a quality sandals outlet with 200-300 pairs of name-brand beach shoes and related water sport attire items. (Thanks for the broken-sandal solution, Lynsi!). Held jelly fish in my hand, learned about how the island keys are created, kayaked through serene twiggy tunnels, witnessed countless fish and even a handful of nurse sharks. Our trip tour guide was Erin and Heather. Their positive can do attitude was super helpful for many of us on the tour from helping us get in the water, actively looking to spot the next new cool thing in the water and quick to even jump under water to allow the group to touch a sea star. She was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, explaining and showing us various birds, jellyfish, Portuguese man of war, manatee, nurse shark, and the mangrove trees! Our Kayak Mangrove Eco Tour was AMAZING! Ellyn was a great tour guide. She was very knowledgeable and passionate about the ecosystem, and made the tour educational and fun. We saw 2 manatees (up very close!!), jellyfish, sea stars, a horseshoe crab, and so many birds! We also got to explore in and around the mangroves. One of many businesses working in Hurricane Hole. Each has its niche. Lazy Dog does paddle boarding and kayaking tours. We went on the eco kayak and learned so much about the mangrove eco system. We saw nurse sharks (up to 5') and handled snails and starfish. We also saw pelicans, iguanas and crabs that live in the trees. Our guide John was always watching the whole group and would repeat the information in different ways and different places so everyone heard all the information. The paddling was easy even in the wind. I never felt the need to put on my vest or worry about tipping. The journey through the grove as the end was very cool. Highly recommended for the friendly team and interesting tour. Our tour went about 2.5 hours and we weren't sore after. Look them up and have some fun! read more

We must have had the same fellow for a tour guide as Tia in July of 2022. Our guy was nearly surly and not very friendly. Made the experience less than fun. I made certain he knew that this senior citizen (66) had never kayaked before, but his instructions-don't fall out-were less than helpful. Never the less, hubby and I set out in a double kayak with the group. Didn't see as much as others have, this could have been because our guide was busy, getting ahead of us and then using the time as we caught up to check his cell phone. The worst part occurred when we were going through a section of mangroves, with our kayak in the lead. Tour dude zoomed on ahead, as usual, and our kayak got stuck on a mangrove branch (the tow rope in front became tangled). So we held up the whole group for a good 5 min. while husband and I struggled to free the kayak, which was not easy as a large branch was poking us from behind. Did said tour guide come back to see what was going on? Nope. When we finally freed ourselves and paddled out to where he was, followed by everyone else, he was on his cell phone, again. There was also a tale of Jimmy Buffet who, according to tour dude, 'got his sense of buying real estate from his uncle, Warren Buffet.' Uh, no, blatant lie. Not sure what else was true or false from this so-called guide. When we got back to the dock area, and I struggled to haul my old bones out from the kayak, he rolled his eyes and finally offered me a hand to climb out. read more
