We tried the Albariño (yum) and a Grüner Veltliner (peppery with notes of jasmine - great on its own but too harsh for food pairings). We also had some appetizers my favorite being the pork belly which came with a fruity sauce and the surprisingly filling Italian chopped salad. Not a huge fan of the bruschetta. Fantastic happy hour deal that goes for a reasonable time (5-6pm)! I was here with some friends and the three of us had glasses wine, five plates of food, and a dessert, and it was around $30-40pp. Pretty good deal for San Francisco. The courtyard is really tranquil and sunny as it was a beautiful day yesterday. Our waitress checked on us often. Sometimes if you're in the back, the staff forgets about you a bit but not here. Food was overall good. Very creamy and cheesy, so be mindful of that if you are lactose. My favorite was definitely the shishito peppers. Blistered and delicious in this fruit sauce. The arancini were just okay. It could have been more truffley in my opinion. The artichoke jalapeño dip needed a bit more flavor. Up the artichoke and the jalapeños. Chopped salad was solid, we got another one because it was easy to put down. Lastly, the key lime pie was DELICIOUS! Highly recommend saving some room for dessert. read more

Came for happy hour on a Friday when all appetizers were $10 and glasses of wine were $8. By 5:30 pm, the beautiful outdoor garden was already full, and it seemed like we barely made it in time without a reservation. We shared almost all the appetizers for our meal. My favorite bites were the smoked beef bruschetta and charred octopus, which was such a steal during happy hour! I also enjoyed the creamy artichoke dip. Such a memorable sf restaurant week dinner This restaurant offers so many amazing appetizers that ill be coming back during happy hour just to try them all for ten bucks each(grilled octopus, looking at you) Servers were very smiley and nice and I appreciate that a lot with so many servers being not so warm these days. We sat inside but almost facing their garden which would be great for a warm day with your partner or friend group. Dined for two people and it cost us 130 i think with tip. We've had Blue Plate on our "to try" list for quite a few years and finally decided to stop by for dinner. I'm so glad we did! The food was on point! The interesting thing is we actually enjoyed the appetizers even more than the mains. And yes, we did order the vaunted fried chicken; it was worth having once. The meat itself was juicy and it had a very hard crispy layer, but I felt maybe it needed a touch more seasoning. The ambience reminds me of nice southern food restaurants I've been to in Georgia and the Carolinas. Service was great! We were a bit late for our reservation but they sat us in an even better area than we reserved. We literally booked our next visit before we asked for the check. That's how much we liked it. So generally Blue Plate offers comfort food with an upscale twist. But the menu seems to have shrunken and eliminated some choices for vegetarians and pescatarians. And you should know that they now charge a service fee if you don't pay cash ( pls explain what cash is and who carries it in 2026). They might not seem like a big deal but when you add it to a meal for four people plus the SF mandate etc it's just increases the bill. We had a beautiful birthday dinner here last night. The restaurant was a little crowded when we arrived, so we asked if outdoor seating was available and were graciously ushered into a magical garden space that made the evening feel extra special. Our table shared several appetizers, two full entrées, and three desserts, and everything was delicious. The service was attentive and welcoming, this is the kind of place where you sit down, relax, and enjoy being properly taken care of throughout the meal. Maybe a little slow, but way better than feeling rushed. The only thing we all wished for was a cocktail menu, but we happily celebrated with a bottle of bubbly for the birthday wife and beers for the rest of us. Service was a bit sporadic as it wasn't crowded at all when we arrived about 6pm on a Thursday but then it got pretty busy by 7:30-8. Gem salad and charred octopus were very tasty! Wasn't sure if we were supposed to get bread though. The fried chicken was good but not great, as the other reviews heightened my expectations. We also had the rock fish which was tasty. Wine list for cabernet sauvignon was a bit light but we found a good one in the Route Stock 2022. Ended with 2 solid desserts although the chocolate sundae brownie was more whipped cream and ice cream and lacking in actual brownie! Overall, a good meal and I would go back if in the area. But keep in mind that parking can be a challenge as this area has gotten quite popular with several good restaurants opening in the last few years. read more

My husband picked Blue Plate as a surprise for my birthday, knowing I would enjoy their high-quality comfort food. We lucked out that they were participating in SF Restaurant Week -- $45 for a three-course dinner. Wine pairing for $27. We enjoyed our meals, but found the service spotty. The host did not inquire if we were celebrating anything special, nor did our server. No biggie. We certainly didn't want anyone singing table side! But the staff didn't show much interest after taking our orders. Our entrees arrived before they replaced the cutlery (which had been cleared after our appetizer course), leaving us stranded for nearly 10 minutes. It was impossible to get anyone's attention. Also, our server offered to bring more wine BEFORE the second course, but it didn't arrive until we were halfway finished. They did not offer coffee or tea with dessert. We felt they had given up on us! And although it's no longer uncommon, we were rankled by the 3.5% surcharge to use a credit card. WHO carries that kinda cash around after Covid?!? In summary: We loved our food, but felt a bit neglected throughout the meal. read more

Bummer we came back after a couple years and the food is similar but the service model has definitely fallen off. So uncoordinated, curt and ultimately made for a disappointing overall experience. Enjoyed the deviled eggs. octopus and burrata. Ordered the meatloaf, steak and 2 fried chickens. Got the meatloaf. A couple of minutes later the steak and a fried chicken... then an awkward 5 or so minutes later we got the other fried chicken with a lame halfhearted apology. Then, it was obviously right out the fryer so I would up burning the roof of my mouth off. Dessert was poor. Key like pie crust was like 1/2" thick making for a clunky sandy eating experience. Brownie sundae had like 4 little bits of brownie. Disappointing. About half way through the meal our somewhat nice server was replaced with a guy who's officious, loud and functional approach seemed like something out of the military. It was like they forgot they were running a service business. When you pay $300 for 4 people with only 1 alcoholic beverage, you expect to feel welcome, treated like a guest. Not at Blue Plate. Meatloaf usually isn't something I think about or consider eating. Perhaps I'm just uncultured, but I've never even seen meatloaf on a menu before. I can't really explain it but there seems to be some sort of societal aversion to meatloaf... I think Blue Plate really changes that. It was a really busy weeknight so naturally, it was pretty lively and loud. I'm glad I made reservations. I never would have thought to associate the words moist and juicy with meatloaf, but there isn't any other way to describe it. The mashed potatoes and green beans are whatever, pretty bland to be honest. The deviled eggs were creamy and had a nice smoky finish. Smoked beef bruschetta was good as well. The lion's mane pappardelle was also a bit bland. I was excited to try lion's mane mushrooms, but I couldn't even tell there was any in the dish. Butterscotch pudding wasn't as smooth as I'd like, but the brownie sundae was good and not overly sweet. I think Blue Plate is really worth trying, obviously for the meat loaf but I've also heard good things about their fried chicken read more

Came here for SF restaurant week and the deal they offered was great. I had actually been here years ago and things haven't changed much, which is a good thing so they've remained consistent. We got here early knowing parking would be difficult. We were greeted at the door and seated right away. We sat inside so I couldn't fully see the outdoor area, but it looked really cute. When we arrived there were only a few tables that were occupied, but it definitely filled up fast. I would recommend a reservation if it's a Friday or Saturday night. We each ordered an appetizer, entree and dessert, so we could try a little bit of everything and it was all fabulous. The butternut squash risotto was rich, but tasted amazing. My wife & I had an incredible wedding reception experience at Blue Plate I approached Jeff maybe 2 weeks before the day of the dinner asking if he by chance had availability to squeeze us in for a 12-15 person reception on their beautiful back patio to celebrate out wedding with guests. With such an incredibly short window to make the impossible happen, he did, and worked to give us a private event for our evening to celebrate again, despite an insane last minute request. VERY grateful. They immediately made us feel like special guests, VIP even, and helped us set up some of our own decorations to prepare for our guests. The service was incredible, the food was by far the best I've had in SF, and the ambiance was just brilliant, the perfect combination for our once in a life time evening celebration. I was blown away with the entire night and can't stress enough how great Jeff & his entire team is from the hosts, to the servers, to the chefs etc. My wife & I will never forget that beautiful night, and we have Blue Plate to thank for saving our special day on such short notice! read more

The art at Blue Plate is a great indication of what you should expect: at a glance, it'll look classic but there's something eclectic and lovely to be had without looking too closely. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable so you're sure to feel taken care of as well. We shared smoked beef bruschetta that was smokey, crispy, creamy all at once, charred octopus with a phenomenal acidic sauce and creamy beans, deviled eggs that were rich with the right amount of smoked trout funk, and a delightful egg fettuccine with a light creamy sauce, perfect little peas, wild ramps and mustard flower that was just the perfect spring dish. Top that all off with a key lime pie slice and you'll have had a phenomenal date night. Wine offerings are plentiful with someone for just about every pallet.
