We had bought salmon here one time a year ago and thought we had found a gem and a little lace worth driving to from Loveland. This year we drove in from about 35 minutes away to get a pound of scallops thinking we couldn't go wrong buying from a specialty fish shop. Cooked our scallops we bought packed in a ziplock bag (thought that was strange but...I don't know...). We couldn't eat them as they tasted very ammonia. Very disappointing and sorry but one time getting bad seafood and I'll never be back. I'll do myself a favor and stick to Whole Foods where we have never had a problem. This place is awesome!!! I wish more people knew about it. I like making my own sushi and up until I discovered this place, I used frozen shrimp tempura and smoked salmon since it's all but impossible to find sushi-grade fish around here. That is until I discovered Blue Reef. I now make lots and lots of different types of sushi and it's wonderful! The lady that seems to always be there (maybe an owner?) is super nice and helpful. She helped us decide on how much to buy for what we were making and made suggestions for us. She also offered to package it on ice if we weren't going directly home. Yes, it is expensive but it's the freshest of fresh fish you'll ever find in Longmont and I'm willing to pay a lot for that! Seriously, it's an awesome place and such a hidden gem. These guys rock. Ever go into a seafood place and it smells like fish? This is NOT that place. It smelled GREAT! That means: Really Fresh Fish. I mean, REALLY fresh. Very very high quality stuff. And it was priced either a bit more or about the same as you'd find at the local grocery. Longmont: Please, do not let these guys fail. Patronize them. Buy your fish from these guys. Clean, with an oceanic but not fishy fragrance about the place. Well stocked, and knowledgeable. Had a nice chat with one of the owners about all kinds of fish and fishing, too. I asked about Swai (google or wiki it) because I love it, and they would be able to get it for me, although they warned me it would not be inexpensive (I used to be able to get frozen Swai when I lived in MD). We bought some beautiful scallops and a filet of a fish I had never heard of and have forgotten the name of. h. I was impressed that he could give me flavor and texture profiles as compared to some of the other things that I've had, so I could get an idea. The owner gave me some tips on how to cook/prepare that mystery fish. Prices are market and vary by what it is you're buying. The website has just been stood up , but they do have a Facebook page, and the owners usually post the daily specials there. OK, so I heard about this place from Yellow Scene magazine. Visited the store yesterday. They have very little inventory. I saw 4 varieties of finned fish. One variety of oysters. I went to this place on a whim to check out the selection while I was in the strip mall. The owner was very helpful and they carry a large selection of frozen fish. The fresh fish selection is much smaller, but that is only because it is high-quality and shipped up from Denver daily. We purchased some fresh Alaskan halibut and it was the best fish I've ever bought from a store. Delicious, flaky, and meaty. If only a produce market would open in the same strip-mall, I could do all my food shopping in one place instead of nasty grocery stores. These guys are cool. They ship in fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other sea creatures for me to eat every single day. If they don't have something, they will order it for you. Everything I've had so far has been fresh and delicious. I really wish they would get some exotic meats, such as humpback whale tenderloin, bottle-nose dolphin ribs, or even some decent cuts of seal/sea-lion (I know seal isn't really seafood, but the meat does sort of have a briny taste to it due to the seal's diet). Even with their refusal to order walrus ribeyes for me, I still give this place 5 stars. They're up there with the Land Crab...excellent seafood. Excellent seafood. read more

So far, so good.... Time will tell! This was my first visit and unlike the other reviewer, I do have to say that the fishy smell upon entering was a bit off putting..... A little is to be expected, this was a bit beyond that; I didn't let it influence me buying however. I purchased two filets of red snapper, they did have a decent selection but I planned on making fish tacos.... $12, so $6 a filet for a decent size.... Not bad! I immediately buried my nose in the bag when I got in the car.... No smell at all! Red snapper has an extremely perfumed flavor when eaten raw, those floral notes remain when cooked but are slightly muted and the flesh usually tastes just slightly sweet. You are only able to notice this when it's very clean and fresh. I had made a guanabana and chili crema to use on the fish so I only salted the filets before searing.... The second they hit the pan you could smell the ocean; the good kind, not the fishy kind! I have to admit, the crema I made was incredible; but only half of the snapper actually made it into the tacos.... I started eating it out of the pan and had to force myself to stop! Very sweet and flavorful with just a touch of salt... It was almost criminal sticking it in a taco! I will be returning soon to make sure I didn't just get lucky.... If I have the same experience, I will make a point to be having fish at least three times a week! read more

Great fresh fish, excellent service at a good value. Seasoning rubs are available if you ask for it as well as knowledge of the fish seasons and environment. Apparently the owner makes his own sushi as well. The one thing I'd like to see more of is more deals and specials on the website-- maybe a daily selection? Gave them a try for some wild salmon. Pricing was on the high side, fish quality was on par with a decent grocery store but had a ton of bones that made it an unpleasant eating experience. The owners need to pay better attention to what they are selling. read more

I wouldn't have even expected to find fresh seafood here in the mountains, and I'd never have tried this place if it weren't for the great Yelp reviews. This shop is small but very clean and there is absolutely no fish smell at all when you walk in. We bought littlenecks, steamers and a pound of fresh shrimp for a seafood feast. Every single one of our clams was good, no duds at all. The shrimp was fresh and delicious. There was not a huge selection: small inventory means extra fresh seafood. The owner was very friendly and said he could get most anything with 24 hour notice. Will definitely shop there again. We're both from the east coast and missing our fresh seafood. read more

If I like a place a lot, i give 5 stars - I like Blue Reef a lot! I would much rather go here than to Whole Foods. They have a great selection and will get just about anything you want the next day if not on the shelf. I come down from Berthoud to shop here. The owner (i am bad w/names) is great to talk to - he knows fish and seafood inside out. We must have spent 20 minutes one time talking about the different qualities of various Florida fish. I agree with most of the other reviews on the quality of the seafood, but it troubles me that they put the product directly into a plastic grocery bag! It's not food safe and it doesn't protect the fish. Have they ever heard of butcher paper? Can you imagine buying a steak and having the butcher put it directly into a plastic grocery bag? The last time I was in (about 2 months ago) I purchased sushi-grade tuna and salmon. The gal put the fish into a zip lock bag (one step up from the grocery bag), but there was raw fish all over the outside of the bag! If they're not willing to use butcher paper (the owner says it's too expensive) what other shortcuts are they potentially taking? Perhaps that's a giant leap, but it does make me wonder. I wish the owners would be more mindful of the way they present their high-quality product to their customers. They should also note that plastic bags often end up in oceans which is harmful to sea life - you'd think they would not want to contribute to something that's damaging their source of product. read more
