First off,I'm a Chef and I can tell you I'm mad,REALLY MAD I just found out about this place. My father took me there when I visited him and he told me the oxtails were best he's had (he's 90 and has eaten several herds of oxtails so that's a bold statement) and I wanted to try them. While they're not on the menu all the time,along with some other specials he sprinkles in every so often,I felt lucky to try them and they DID NOT DISAPPOINT.The greens were fully dressed with onion and tomato just like my aunt used to make and I'm telling you the oxtails tasted like he had an army of country Baptist grannies in the back (he did not). The hot water cornbread reminded me of my moms and the gravy for the oxtails could've been a side all by itself,no joke. I've only eaten like this at the home of an elderly relative,NEVER at a restaurant. It's a fact that not everyone can cook oxtails like this and I can't wait to go back there because those salmon croquettes are in trouble. If you wanna eat and I mean REALLY EAT...you need to get in there as soon as you can. This man,his wife and the staff know exactly what they're doing and they're doing it the right way. I was scared to have dessert because I thought it might put me to sleep after that meal I had and they don't allow sleeping in the booths. I cannot stress enough how good that food made me feel in my feels. The line starts here with mastering the art of home cooking in a very comfortable atmosphere. Great home cooking not at home just doesn't happen,unless you walk yourself in there. I couldn't find a set menu that I was confident was accurate and so I called and the staff offered to text me menu. After looking it over we settled for the rib plate and the ribeye steak plate. Sides were mashed potatoes, green beens, cabbage and baked beans. We also received a hoe cake with each meal and purchased the strawberry cake and caramel cake. All food was packaged well and was at correct temperatures. We enjoyed our selection and found everything scrumptious and delicious. Only thing we'd change is thickness of ribeye steak. For $22 it should be thicker. We'd definitely go back. There is seating inside enough for groups. It was pretty quiet with a chill vibe inside. read more

I've been here a few times. I don't eat soul food regularly, just once in a while. I do think this is the best soul food in Lex though! They have a lot of options of what to get that change. Pick a meat and 2 sides. Eat there or order on the phone if you're more of a regular. I went just a little before Thanksgiving and got this Turkey and gravey with stuffing and cabbage. Very good and satisfying. A little saltier than I'd prefer, but that's common with restaurants. Will go again the next time I'm craving soul food. First trip but won't be the last. Getting a burger with fries and a drink for $7 is great, but even better when the burger is actually cooked well and seasoned! The wings were crispy and perfectly cooked, and my partner 's catfish filet special was exactly what she was craving when looking for a piece of fried fish. Service was excellent; owner and chef welcomed us and introduced himself and explained the menu. Sides were good too, with collard greens being excellent and the Mac and cheese being creamy and smooth; my criticism of needing a little more salt or a sharper cheese resolved by a squirt of hot sauce. The place is more of a sports bar in layout, with a TV and booths, and not too big, but the food would be fine for takeout too. I will say that parking is limited, about five spots, and one side of Seventh St. is for parking too. The building is also set back from the road so you can pass it easily. But for soul food and bar staples, definitely worth the trip (I sort of wonder why they don't have a liquor license). read more

We've got 3 kids 4,3,and 1 year olds and I'm pregnant with our 4th. Was so tired of fast food & other restaurants, craving some country cooking. This place NAILED IT. There was NOTHINg left on our plates. I got the salmon cakes (croquettes) dinner with greens and pan fried cornbread (cornbread batter fried like a pancake---out of this world!). Also ordered the baked beans & potato salad and they were !!!! Hubby ordered the steak & shrimp ( he's a steak snob and said this steak & shrimp was AMAZING several times. He wants to order it again next time. Our boys loved the steak & shrimp but also loved the chicken tenders & fries & Mac n cheese too! Now the people & service matched the food. Friendly people that welcomed our rowdy bunch in like family (no high chair for the 1yo but he ran around the place & made friends with everyone and no one minded. We felt SO at home here). Well I had high hopes for this home cookin' restaurant but sorry to say I'm disappointed. It's hard for a family owned business to compete with franchises and it's showing itself this place. The menu is very minimal with certain home cooked foods completely left out. I feel like some of these items are from a can l, not fresh. Hopefully I'm incorrect. I know home cooking is not precise each time you make them. As an example; I don't want greens juice, I want greens. Please use a slotted spoon or just be sure to drain before serving. The one thing I wanted to try more than anything was the hoecakes and salmon croquettes. You can't get these at many places. No hoecakes that day. I'm used to mine and even my kids love them. So it's hard to please me. The food overall was good for eating out, but I need to try some other dishes. Where's the fried chicken, lima beans, creamed corn, sweet potatoes, sautéed squash, zuchinni, and tomato, potato salad, cole slaw, bbq ribs, and lots of other sides and entrees. I was back in Lexington for business last week and I took 5 coworkers along for dinner on Wednesday to Blue Skillet and now I think I should be the crowned 'queen of delicious food finding' for our office! I got salmon croquettes again with Mac n' Cheese & green beans this time and they were absolutely to die for, again! The other special was a fried pork chop with gravy and 3 folks at the table got those, 2 got salmon croquettes & 1 got a burger and fries. All you could hear when we got our food was chewing and slurping because there was nothing but magic on those plates! I tried the pork chops and they were big, juicy & delicious and everyone that ordered them agreed! The burger orderer was impressed with her meal as well. The pork chops were at least half plate size with regular size bones and everyone loved the sides also, which included cabbage, mashed potatoes and gravy, & mac n' cheese. So good! Even though I had only been here one time 3 weeks before the owner, the same man making magic in the kitchen with 1 other dude, recognized me & asked about my boo & basketball. The restaurant was properly decorated for the tournament as well. Again, I say, they get customer service! The next day we were about to leave town when the friend I rode with suggested we go back... we could easily become addicted to this food! She got the salmon croquettes again and this time I got the hot wings and fries. These were so good! I like much hotter things usually, but these were perfect as they didn't make my lips burn or give me heart burn or reflux. She got the dressing with gravy this time and it was tasty as well. This restaurant DOES NOT accept the restaurant.com certificates after all. The card reader depends on an iPad attachment so technology sucks sometimes, but it's all worth it for this food!
