Kind of on the outskirts of Chinatown in that weird transitional space that flows into North Beach. Not very high traffic. Takeout only right now, even though there seem to be seats/tables. Very good value and solid quality. Though there is a mix of hits and misses, so best to try a few things so you're guaranteed a few stars. Shrimp Dumplings: A great value at $3.60 for 4. Just as good as the ones served from pricier dim sum carts at restaurants. Lots of shrimp inside a delicate skin. Pork Siu Mai: Another reliable favorite, familiar on dim sum carts. Very meaty and hearty. Chive Dumplings: It was ok, but not as a good as the other two dim sum items. Seemed like a lot more greens than shrimp. BBQ Pork Bun: Steamed bun with sweet sticky pork inside. Very crave worthy. Pan Fried Pork & Vegetable Bun: Only slightly browned from the pan fry and not crispy. The inside felt kinda skimpy compared to all the bread. Only a little pork among the cabbage. Liked the BBQ pork bun more. Fried Meat Dumpling: These were so yummy. A gooey mochi like dumpling that is deep fried to have a delightfully crispy skin. And the inside was like beef and mushroom or something, very umami. Chicken Rice: So I like that there is a nice thick layer of crispy rice at the bottom of the pan, which ends up on top of the takeout container. However, wasn't a fan of the chicken. Every piece had bones in it. And not like big drumstick bones that are easy to eat around, but tiny little shards. So you have to be really careful eating this. Especially since the crispy rice acts like a false flag in the nonstop game of "Is this a bone or is it crispy rice?" Not worth all the effort. read more

Fresh tasting ground pork that they most likely minced fresh from actual slabs. T Porridge -pork and preserved egg -When the greed take over and price gouge $8 plus this place taking care of the community and the people at $2.50 The best porridge I've had in a really long time as it reminds me of grandmas porridge with the whole Shabang. Order this please Buns 3x Custard bun- at .90 cents a piece . a bit pricey but their plain bread and custard filling makes up for it. The plain white bun itself is very satisfying airy , moist, spongy imagine a steamed Hawaii bread all white. The egg custard inside jiggly but holds it shape reminds me of dan tat (egg tart filling) When it comes to good food there is no set price. This review is strictly for their mantous. I've been on the hunt for good mantous ever since my favorite shop shut down during the pandemic. Those were ginormous no frill and so cheap at the edge of Chinatown (IYKYK). This place could potentially replace it. Although the mantous are smaller and pricier, they are just as fluffy and with the same lightly sweetened milk aroma. I've had them instantly on the spot and I must say that it's way better if you bring them home and re-steam! Overall, I'd definitely come again! P.S they gave multiple flavors - pumpkin, yam, plain white, and wheat. My fave was the plain white! read more

We just love Blue Sky! Our family walks a mile to have their delicious BBQ pork buns, veggie and pork buns and so many choices of dim sum. We really love the veggie & pork buns with a little ginger. Intrigued, I looked it up on Yelp and the reviews said cheurng fun was good, so I went in and got a beef. It was good. The folks ahead of me also ordered the cheurng fun too. Nice snack. Shrimp rice roll tasted bad. I think they were selling it for awhile, the texture of shrimp inside was really tough and shrink to tiny bit like it's been steamed over and over again, it's not fresh at all. The rice roll was also thick and have dried edges. Other items tasted better than the shrimp rice roll but they were also not that fresh. Over priced for low quality taste experience. read more

This place is no frills and offers a variety of dim sum to go. My kind of place. Everything is pretty much $1/piece -- at least for the smaller items. F O O D Chicken feet - This was tasty!! Some to go places serve it by the pound, but this one comes with 4 for $4 (I think). Char Siu Bao/Pork Bun - Steamed, fluffy bread with a decent amount of filling. The filling wasn't gelatinous, too fatty, or too sweet. It was also only $1. I'd definitely get these again. Har gow - This wasn't my favorite of the places I've tried. It's missing something for me. It's also $1/each piece, which is probably cheap by sit down standards but expensive for to go. Inflation... Egg custard circle thing (I don't actually know what it's called, but it was in the case and there's a red bean version) - not too sweet and had a good egg filling ratio. Got all your usual dim sum staples siumai, hargao, cheung fun, salted pork w/ century egg congee, clay pot black bean pork and rice and MANY more. And a wide selection of steamed buns, try the Yam/sweet potato mantao bun and my personal favorite and best item they have IMO is the Big Bun or Dai Bao. It has pork, Chinese sausage, egg, shiitake mushrooms and usually pretty filling, hence big bun. Its the best in the area. Menu has both English and Chinese w/ prices. This is such a hidden gem! I'm a LA Native, but discovered this hidden gem from my mom's coworker. Their Mantou is the BEST you can ever find. My family's all time favorite is the milk/plain Mantou. Last I went back was in December of 2020. The prices of their Dim Sum is very affordable. A mantou the size of a grown man's fist is $0.75. I always stock up before I head back to LA with about 100 mantou to share with family and friends. I wish they could open one in LA. My family and I have tried many other Mantou places and tried making our own, but could never get the strong, but natural milky aroma and flavor they make. All their other dim sum sizes are also huge and cheaper than any dim sum restaurant you can find. They've got baked buns (hot dog, egg yolk, BBQ pork - 70 cents each), cake rolls, egg custard tarts, steamed buns, dim sum (har gow, siu mai, dry shrimp crepe, shark's fin dumplings, 3 for $1.40) and congee. * Red bean pancake: good, soft, chewy, lot of red bean, not greasy at all, smooth filling * Steamed big bun ($1.10): still warm with mushroom, sausage, hard boiled egg, chicken chunks, scallions, moist interior. They always have a huge selection of fresh baos (some of which to this day I still have never tried before), and of course all the dimsum is hot and fresh as well. Mario is a tech who comes out to measure water in the walls, sets up the defibrillators, Mario deserves 5 starts too along with Catherine who accompanies him. I've lived literally a few doors down from this place for a few years now, the owners are so so so so so nice! Also the food is amazingly good esp. for the price you pay. My fav is always their rice noodles and fried salt water pockets (srry I'm not sure the exact name for them in English tbh). Honestly amazing and the fact that it's on Powell St makes it so much easier to stop in whenever cuz it's way less busy than the cafes on stockton or grant. read more

Old-timer Chinese hangout. If you have a hankering for old-school San Francisco, you will find the faded paint and faded patrons here. The women behind the counter are wonderfully nice and speak just enough English; they are attentive and there is a sign behind the steam window lists the specialties in English to order: BBQ pork bun (2 stars), Chicken bun (3 stars), sticky rice in tea leaf (something to savor-4 stars plus some), and the rest of the list that i haven't explored yet, but am very willing to try. There are tables in the restaurant, which always seems to be exactly 1/2 occupied, or you can get a bag to go... but... this hole-in-the-wall restaurant is on the same block as the Northstar pub- so obviously a 'togo' bag of buns and rice is a very nice juxtaposition against watching Germany stomp the hell out of England in the World Cup. read more

Yuck, disgusting! Ok, we passed by this place - mostly empty or table of older Chinese men sitting drinking coffee and eating buns. It seems they are supposed to be famous for their flavored rice. Appear to have some dim sum pieces and baked buns. Normally wouldn't have tried but given two 4-stars reviews, how bad can it be? First time we walked in - they were out of whatever we asked for. Ok, next time. When we did return - we asked for a pineapple bun. I mean, this is probably one of the most common baked good in Chinese bakery so one can't really screw up right? Think again! The bun was yuck - old and stale. I can't even swallow the bite I took and my husband didn't even want a second bite or try to finish it so we threw it away - you don't know my husband but he NEVER throws anything away, he was brought up to not waste food so imagine how bad it was! We were glad it only took us $0.40 to rule out this place so we don't need to waste precious stomach space here. We are all for going to neighborhood mom and pop joints but unless someone convince me otherwise, this place is a GONER! read more

This place calls itself a restaurant but to me it seems more like a one-room tiny hole-in-the-wall cafeteria. They have dim-sum items and other hot foods. It's located just five blocks from my place, so I walk over often to buy a fast cheap bite to eat. Usually I buy the little egg custard tarts at $3 for $1.75 or the shrimp dumplings at about the same price. The lady behind the counter doesn't speak much english but I can point!!! A new over-the-counter dim-sum place for me. They also have tables, so you can sit-down for a quick, nourishing meal too. So far, all the menu items I've tried are better than the other over-the-counters I've had here in Chinatown. The taste and quality are very much on par with much higher dollar sit-down and yum-cha restaurants for the same menu items, but for cheap-cheep. I've had the Tai-Shan Big Bun, the "plain bun," the Plain Chinese Donut, the sesame ball, and the fried meat dumpling. They were all superb (note: the steamed Northern Chinese menu items are still a bit off on account of Southern sweetness in the breadding...but the rice-flour items are simply great). They have a few "Western Style" baked goods, and even make wedding cakes. I'll just have to keep coming back. Oh, and sorry, no congee. read more

come here at 8am anyday of the week for best fresh dimsum and baos. seriously i've had dimsum in hong kong and the top places in the bay area like yank sing, hk flower lounge, etc. those places are of course going there with you family and enjoying nice long dimsum sunday lunch. here at blue sky, you can get a pint of jook (thousand yr egg and pork) for a $1.10??? really??? and its better than some restaurants that sell jook for 5-6 bucks. their rice noodles are good as well as baked baos. the lady is super nice too. for those who don't go in the morning, you will of course have bad food in the afternoon as they don't make it throughout the day but just the morning. they will still sell it to you and microwave if you're dumb enough to buy it. we chinese, always thinking to make money. learn how to buy dimsum from these small counter places before making judgements. read more

I was just walking home from across town and I was hungry for a little treat. I stopped in to this corner joint that says "you get best dim sum here" in english. Low and behold that is exactly what ends up happening. The usual linguistical chaffing occurred during the ordering phase of the transaction; especially with my heavy NY "what?" and her not really giving a shit if I got the exact five or six 40 cent dumplings that I wanted. Not sure if i specifically order it or not, but steaming hot and fuckin on point is what I got. Which coincidentally enough is all I am really looking for in a chinatown dumpling; whatever the little buggers are stuffed with is inconsequential if they are tasty, and I'll be damned if this wasn't the best mother loving dim sum I've gotten to date.
