Listen, it's no frills and all the people eating at that moment were Chinese. We were the only non-Chinese and honestly, I felt really good about our chances of eating good dim sum here. Old school Chinese restaurant in the heart of SF Chinatown. They have a karaoke machine if you feel brave enough. We stopped in to have a light lunch and enjoy the atmosphere of the area. SF has one of the last and truly old school Chinatowns. You can hear the old language here, and it's not mandarin. We ordered a few dim sum items and everything came out fresh and hot. I'm not sure if it's just because I was starving, but I really enjoyed the food here! The restaurant itself isn't anything fancy, and the food choices are all pretty standard. All of the dim sum dishes we had were fantastic though! We had shrimp dumplings, pan fried pork dumplings, bbq port buns, and an egg soup with Chinese donuts. My favorite was definitely the pan fried dumplings - they had a perfect amount of meat inside and the flavors were phenomenal. The soup was also great, especially with the donut! The food did take a while to come out after we ordered, so I wouldn't recommend if you're in a hurry. Overall service was good though, and the staff were all super friendly! Broadway Dim Sum Cafe surprised me in the best way. I was expecting mid, based on some of the reviews, but this place slapped. The pork and veggie buns were fresh and fluffy with that good steamy dough and flavorful filling. The chow fun was delicious. Chewy, silky noodles with great wok flavor and not oily. But the real star was the braised pig trotters. Fall-apart tender, with the perfect mix of rich fatty bits and soft lean meat, all draped over a bed of cabbage soaking in sauce. There are 2 dim sum places right next to each other on this street. This particular location serves up decently affordable dim sum (items mostly range from $4-5 with some premium options up to $7-8), though the menu is pretty sparse and limited to only the most basic items. Most of the other customers seemed to be regulars and overall nothing was particularly delicious. I think most of the very high reviews either to be clouded by nostalgia or are actually for the dim sum place next door as I found the food to be mid and service / ambiance abysmal. It was a chilly Saturday when we went and the door was open the whole time so that the regulars could go outside to smoke. There was a bit of a line and the lady kept telling everyone that the wait would be 5 minutes. We ended up waiting 15 to be seated and another 20 before our first dim sum item came out. Then it turns out they forgot two of our items which resulted in an additional 15-20 minute wait. I ended up spending over 70 minutes here and left hungry because I frankly just wanted to leave. They do take credit card here, which is a nice perk for Chinatown, but honestly go to one of the many, many other much better options around here. Been going to this place since I was a kid. At one point they had the store to the right also so there was a doorway in the right wall when you walk in. It's changed again this past time. Small, but you can always split a large round table with others (old school style). Saw some old folks as well as what looked like millennials there enjoying their chow fun. You say the neon lights are bright on Broadway...well at Broadway Dim Sum Cafe, the dim sum menu items are served just well enough for those to enjoy. Located on the eponymous Broadway in San Francisco's Chinatown neighborhood, Broadway Dim Sum Cafe has been serving traditional Cantonese menu items for what feels like generations, as their still fairly newish pink awning is a reminder for dim sum fans of what place they are actually looking for amongst all of their rivals in the Chinatown business district. What brought me to sample a variety of the dim sum delights that Broadway Dim Sum Cafe offers up is the fact that they were participating in San Francisco Restaurant Week for the Fall of 2023, which for an affordable fast-casual dining option in the city, this was a rarity, as usually businesses sign up to participate because they can offer diners usually a three-course set price menu option with a curated choice of an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. But at Broadway Dim Sum Cafe they uniquely offer a Dim Sum Combo for only 15 dollars, which includes three steamed pork buns, four steamed shrimp dumplings or Haw Gows, four steamed pork dumplings or Siu Mai and one canned beverage of your choice. They also offered a lunchtime entrée item and iced tea option, but considering the time I had I opted for the dim sum pre-fix menu option. With a deal like that, I was on board to try something new, and since Broadway Dim Sum Cafe was so close to my work place, I thought a quick walk up Broadway to grab my meal for a takeout lunch was just the thing I needed to break up the monotony of my day. Plus the benefit of being able to grab a quick and easy takeout meal and still not be too far away from work worked out perfectly for me. Upon entry to Broadway Dim Sum Cafe, one will notice that there are certainly no frills operation here, as they have a case of cellophane wrapped desserts in one case, and more non-perishable dim sum items behind another glass case. In fact, all of their steamed dim sum items are behind their front glass partition facing the front of their restaurant, which ironically is covered by additional pictures of their menu, and other menu items written in Chinese characters with corresponding images. So in order to see what their dim sum items look like you really have to step inside and peer over their front counter to see what they are offering. In less than five minutes, their server knew exactly what I came here for, as I managed to point to their sign and put up an index finger to represent the number one as if to say that I wanted one of these. She told me to look in their glass case for a soft drink of my choice, which included some nice canned tea and pearl drinks, as she assembled my takeout food order. Costing only $15.33, which included tax, I was out the door with a heavy plastic takeout box of food to take back to work to feast on. Upon my return back to my office, I decided to dive into each of my three dim sum items to see which ones I liked the best, and honestly the answer was simple, as their Pork Siu Mais were tightly wrapped and ready to be consumed. Their Har Gows were decent, but honestly nothing to write about, as since everything was served at room temperature, it had to be immediately reheated in a microwave, and therefore turned each dumpling into a bit of a mushy experience taste-wise, which made me not like it as much as I should. The BBQ pork steamed were slightly disappointing as well, as there was way too much breaded bun for my taste, as there wasn't enough pork filling, as the inside was fine, but just needed a little more so I could enjoy every bite. But as I ate every bite of my takeout meal, and managed to take home a little more for a future meal, I thought to myself, how often would I get this much food for so little money. If Broadway Dim Sum Cafe had not participated in San Francisco Restaurant week, then I never would have visited, so mission accomplished, as the whole goal of this promotion was to discover new businesses with their affordable multi-course specially curated menu. I was also able to glance at their lunch and dinner menu featuring their entrées, and their Chow Fun and Chow Mein dishes were sold at $10.50 each, and that comes with a protein topping. I think the price points make it worth a second look alone, and when you're walking down that street, and you ain't had enough to eat...I won't quit til I know that Broadway Dim Sum Cafe is that star I know it can be! read more

My friend and I came here at 2:30pm on a Saturday and were given menus and water quickly. I ordered the shrimp dumplings dim sum and also a shrimp chow mein. The food was fine. Nothing that amazing and the dim sum wasn't super flavorful. I expected better quality for paying $5.50 for four dumplings. My friend ordered the sweet and sour chicken and she opted to leave the dish uneaten. She also had the bbq pork buns which she did enjoy. They said that if we waited 10 minutes, they could make everything else. Thus, we ordered 6 bbq pork buns ($4.50 for 3), 12 siu mai ($4.50 for 4). We then went to walk down the street to get drinks. When we came back ten minutes later, the food was ready and they also threw in a few complimentary sesame balls on the house. (this was really nice of them) It really felt like a welcoming environment. This is a local business I would support. Unfortunately, this one may be a bit overrated at the current 3.5 stars It's cheap, but I would describe the quality as simply, "eatable". Serving sizes are adequate. They don't even have beer *sad face* I started with the chicken chow fun. It had a bland taste throughout. We got to San Francisco later than usual but it was because Gavin's hockey doesn't end until 11. We were all pretty hungry but I was determined to go to Chinatown for dim sum because I know that's what Tess wanted. After about a 20 min. walk I asked the kids if they want to go to a dim sum deli (where you buy and walk and eat) or go to a sit-down place. The place we wanted to go to was takeout only for the time being so we just went to a random spot across the street. It wasn't great. The pork and egg congee was good but the consistency of the congee wasn't quite as silky smooth as it was in Hong Kong. Wasn't quite as flavorful as some we've had either. The chicken feet were good. Lunch in San Francisco Chinatown Found a casual spot on the edge of Chinatown serving cheap dim sum including a variety of dumplings... then we saw it was "cash only." We started to leave then one of the ladies working there, perhaps the manager, told us to come inside and "have a seat" and said they "take Visa" (major credit card) so we were able to use our debit card. Our food was served in a timely manner and as promised in 10 minutes. It was very good! We also ordered Deep Fried Sesame Balls (3-pcs for $3.25). We had it cut in halves before we left. Classic chinese meal located in Chinatown. My mom would actually order their congee for me here every time and it practically never disappoints. I ended up getting their Mapo Tofu, Lettuce with Oyster Sauce, as well as the Eggplant with Minced Pork. The eggplant dish was actually my favorite! I thought it had a lot good flavor and it was so comforting and salty as a whole. It's super saucy so I recommend ordering this if you're ever here. The lettuce is basically a chinese classic lol It's simply boiled lettuce with a sauce drizzled all over. The simplicity of it is a nostalgic one for me and this is something I would normally order for veggies. And lastly, the Mapo Tofu. I thought this was okay. It's not my favorite place to get this but it's a pretty filling meal to have still. My favorite chinese dish growing up is Mapo Tofu so I thought this was only alright. I felt like it was missing that spicy saltiness to it that makes this dish iconic, but I didn't get that from here. Plus, I'm not a fan of frozen peas and carrots added so I thought it was a little off for me. But overall, this place is still good. Support your local small busines I've had multiple meals at Broadway Dim Sum including dinner and it has ALWAYS been great. Service is always good even though their English is that great but they are always very polite and are very accommodating. I actually have bought large bags of won tons to eat and cook at home or my office and they worked out great. If your looking for Michelin grade service and food your not going to get it here BUT if you want great food at great price cooked by a family who really cares about the food they serve you this a good place. Over the past couple years, many businesses in Chinatown, especially food establishments, have closed or changed ownership. Some of my "go-to" eateries have closed or sold and reopened under a different format. After reading May A's review of Broadway Dim Sum & Café and of her good dining experience, I knew I had to check it out. I was familiar with the restaurant as it was a bakery/dim sum place before it closed. From the recent review and pictures of the food and menu, the restaurant has reopened as a full menu restaurant with dim sum offerings. They serve noodles, rice plates, entrees, porridge and dim sum items. On a recent weekday, I stopped by around 1:30pm for lunch. With only two of the eight tables occupied, I had my choice of tables. After seating, the waitress brought menus and tea. After previously checking out the menu on Yelp, I had decided to order Singapore Noodles. The dish had bbq pork and shrimp and had good curry flavor. It was very good and tasty. The lunch also included a bowl of house soup. Very good food with reasonable prices. We ate solely off the Dim Sum menu, so I have no idea about the rest of the food. That being said I freaking loved their pork buns. This cute little small business with the little lady coming up from the back bringing the food from the kitchen. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs but we'll take the rest home and enjoy later. Delish! read more
