I ordered takeout from this restaurant and found a whole cockroach in my food after I had already eaten about half of it. The cockroach was completely covered in oil and sauce, making it look like it had been mixed in with the food. It was absolutely disgusting. I honestly cannot remember a more revolting dining experience. I called the restaurant immediately. At first, I was only offered a replacement meal. After I returned to the restaurant and requested a refund, they refunded the full amount of my order. That's it. No sorry no other things, just rushed me out the door. It felt like they were afraid I would tell other customers that there was a cockroach in my food. What upset me even more was being told that the building is old, so having cockroaches is unavoidable. Finding a whole cockroach in prepared food is not normal, and it is not something customers should be expected to accept. I had already eaten about half of the meal before discovering it. Hunan House was a really nice surprise as it was one of the few restaurants that happened to be open after 7pm during a weeknight evening. I thought there would be way more restaurants in the area that would honor my spicy noodle craving, then we found this spot. My friend and I walked into this restaurant and it was pretty loud lol. Once we were seated, we noticed the loud was coming from a middle table of likely friends or old pals, enjoying a good meal and lots of alcohol because they were again...loud! There were other customers at other tables, too, but we just did our best to just focus on our mission for noodles. So this is a spicy-themed Chinese restaurant. Everything here is made spicy, unless you ask for something less spicy. Chili peppers are stamped onto every dish here...and the menu is pretty huge! I had a hard time deciding what to get, but we decided to get the Sliced Spicy Potatoes, the Spicy Chili Chicken, and a clear Spicy Glass Peanut Noodle Soup. Every dish was very flavorful and extra spicy...ran out of drinking solution (the hot tea) after being numbed by the overall spiciness of it all. My favorite was the spicy potatoes and the chili chicken. It was about $27 or so per person for 3 dishes, which was pretty decent, and we had enough to take home. It was definitely a very good meal. Only thing here is the service is quite lacking...they don't refill the teapot, which is odd, but we also didn't ask, but normally it's a given service. The host never came by other than taking our order, dropping off our dishes, and then handling the check...but we had to ask them for things. So that kinda wasn't good for us. This is located in Chinatown. Not squeeky clean but not disgusting either. Got to gos here at two separate times. In June 2024, I got barbeque squid which was good. In March 2025, I got the combination fried rice. It did not have a lot of ingredients and was not as flavorful as one would expect. At both times, I sat at one of the tables near the entrance; one could smell cigarette smoke coming from the outside. Service was quick and nice. Hunan House is one of my FAVORITE restaurants in Chinatown, and San Francisco in general. The decor is very cool, and I like the fishtank in the front. First time I went, I got the hong kong style noodles with chicken. I believe it was like 16 dollars and when I saw the portion size I was shocked. They serve these noodles in a full size pyrex pie pan. SO MUCH FOOD! Not only are the portions very generous, but the food is AMAZING! They have a ton of very authentic dishes, but they also have things like lemon chicken, both of which are very well made. My personal favorite is the Hong Kong style noodles. The texture is perfect, the cut of meat is not gristley and the bok choi is perfect. Everyone who I take to this place says they love it. I agree with them. The people who work there are quick and straightforward. Not exactly friendly but not mean. One time I ordered a milk tea and the lady said "don't get that one, get the fruit tea" and I was like.. nah what.. just give me the milk tea. So she did and it was genuinely so good I don't know what she's on about. I am a black milk tea connoisseur and sometimes when black tea is really good, it has this chocolatey/oreoy quality to it. All the food arrived 1-hour after the waitress took our order (and only after we asked about food status...seems like the order was overlooked). Fish entree arrived raw and translucent. One of the best Chinese food in Chinatown. We stayed at the Hilton in financial district and was looking for a place to have dinner, and was attracted by all the different Chinese dishes (both Cantonese and Sichuan) shown in their menu. The restaurant wasn't fancy looking, just like an average restaurant with red antique decor, but their food was excellent. I had the best tasting Cantonese roasted duck that flavorful but not overly salty and crispy delicious skin. They weee sold out of their spicy lamb chops, but the server suggested their toothpick lamb which was excellent. The restaurant doesn't offer live seafood in tanks, but will cook them for you if you bring them in. They do offer seafood dishes, just not live off the tanks. Their wine corkage fee is also the lowest I've paid (under $10). read more

This is the first time we have ate in Chinatown for years! This is also the first time trying this restaurant. We were intended to try Z&Y but they were so crowded and closing so my daughter and I wanted spicy so we walked by and ended up here. We ordered the boiling beef, string beans with pork , and the garlic spicy fish all with white rice. Every dish was covered with red chili peppers. The beef was tender with Chinese cabbage and the big head soybean sprouts (which I like). The green beans were twice cooked with pork while the fish was flavorful and spicy. I overheard the cook ordering, speaking in Chinese, the lotus roots and he asked for a certain one that he said was better quality in taste and texture even if it cost more. Lucky I can speak and understand Chinese even though I do not look it. It shows the restaurant chose quality products to serve their customers. For a Chinese restaurant, the service was very good . I was surprised as usually service is not the greatest especially in a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. Cleanliness was ok and I see the waitstaff cleaning and refilling condiments. The prices of the dishes are decent. If I am ever in the area, I will return! Give them a try . I notice they also have hotpot. read more

Classic Chinatown restaurant. It is an old feeling establishment with dated decor. Upstairs, there's karaoke. The menu is mainly family style dishes or hot pot. There's only one page for noodles and rice dishes on the menu for single diners. I had the spicy wonton with chili oil $10 and a seafood pan fried noodle $15. The spicy wontons is low on spice heat scale but good spicy. My crispy Hong Kong style noodles had good wok flavor with huge pieces of fish, shrimps and squid. The only drawback is they drowned it in sauce making it not crispy anymore. Rookie mistake. Service was excellent as I was the only downstairs customer at 9:30pm. I'm so glad I found Hunan's House lunch specials. For $9.50 plus tax you get a huge entrée with rice, soup, hot milk tea or iced lemon tea. You can not beat that price around here for the amount of food and taste! I have ate here twice so far, the first time I ordered the cod with tofu and today I got the prawns with lobster sauce. Excellent taste, fresh food, the soup is different both times and lemon tea is great with real lemon slices in them! I deducted a star because their online ordering does NOT work. Do not order online from them. I made that mistake the first time and when I went to pick up after 40 mins of placing my order online, they told me they never received my order. They tell me to just call. So call I did! Yesterday I called during lunch hour and their phone straight up hung up on me! I walked over and to my surprise, they were closed! There were people standing around outside wondering why they were closed. On their website, it states open everyday from 11-10 (S-Thu) and 11-11 (F-Sat). There was no note or anything on the door. Today, I called again during lunch hours and the phone disconnected immediately. I walked over and they were open and the servers were muttering amongst themselves "why isn't the phone working!". So I just ordered in person and waited. If they can update their website and take off online orders and fix their phones, that would greatly improve on their customer service. Gee, I thought I exhausted all the restaurants that serve Hainan chicken in Chinatown. That's the sort of ridiculous treasure hunt that this damn pandemic has forced me to pursue, but as my fellow Yelpers know, I do loves me some steamed chicken. I spotted it on their online menu, so I decided to order some takeout as I was traipsing through Chinatown. Actually I wasn't traipsing, I was just stealthily sauntering to keep my distance from people. I ordered the $16.95 '1/2 Hai Nan' which was their version of a steamed half-chicken all chopped up and served with pickled carrot and daikon slices. It came with the ginger garlic glaze and for reasons unclear, a handful of shelled peanuts (photo: https://bit.ly/32FviGR). It was pretty good, not the best I've had but acceptable for my sizable appetite. I also went for the $7.95 Steamed Shanghai Dumplings where I got a half-dozen with a sweet and sour dipping sauce (photo: https://bit.ly/3mQ8DhL). They were decent enough with the requisite soupiness, but they didn't strike me as a house specialty. Actually the best part of my meal was the $15.95 Mixed Mushrooms with Egg White Tofu, quite a unique dish with at least three different kinds of mushrooms sautéed in soy sauce and mixed with slabs of tofu. Food was pretty good honestly. I would've came back if not for the fact that the lady upfront was telling a customer they had to leave a tip and literally chased them out the door for it. The soup was incredible and very warming on a chilly day. The Kung Pao Chicken was wonderful as well with tender pieces of chicken fresh zucchini onions and peanuts. The spice level was perfect.
