You Guys, you have to try the Blue Star Cafe! My girlfriend and I just had lunch there, although she has ordered carryout before. She had the chicken sandwich, I had the tilapia sandwich and we shared sides of spinach and rice. First and foremost, the food is DELICIOUS! Not too salty, not at all greasy, the spices are spot on and if you want hot-spicy the green sauce has a perfect heat. The red sauce is great as well. The portions are GENEROUS, especially for the prices. We ate as much as we could and still walked out with 2 large half sandwiches and an entire to-go box full of rice and spinach. More than enough for another meal for us. All for under $20! The service is friendly and fast. The tilapia is cooked to order but that only took about 15 minutes. The atmosphere is clean and homey, I'd knock a star off for lack of ambiance but the food more than makes up for it. We will definitely be back and often. I already have plans to pop in after my lakefront bike rides for a smoothie and a sandwich. Blue Star is definitely on my short list of Milwaukee's best casual dining establishments! read more

My 13 yo son and I went and it was all that people say. We both got the platter. He got basmati rice and chicken and had them put potatoes on. I got salmon with kay-kay, which is a sort of chapati, but it was made of refined flour rather than whole wheat, I think. The salmon was perfectly cooked--moist and flaky (and salmon can be ruined easily). It was quite fresh. I was very pleased. My son absolutely loved his chicken and rice, digging the spices. The portions were ridiculously generous--we left with boxes. The folks running the place, an older gentleman and lady, were very friendly, congenial and clearly cared that their guests were taken care of and liked the cuisine. We felt very welcomed. The place is very spare but clean. Inexpensive tables and chairs, a little art. It was a bit warm and muggy in the place, as someone else remarked, and it filled up quickly with people at 5:30 pm on Friday. With the TV going and all the chatter, it was quite loud but certainly bearable. You don't come to eat for the ambience--you come for the food! read more

Being very new to this style of food I was hesitant to try it. It was nothing short of amazing. The employees were extremely kind and the service was great. Not only that but the food was some of the best I've ever had. On first glance it's one of those places I probably would've walked right past. We came as a group after one friends recommendation and I'm very glad we did. We tried the various platters as well as the sambusas and the sandwich. I would highly recommend all of it! Been here a few times. I've had the beef, chicken, and goat platters with the rice and all of them are great. Lot of food for a pretty decent price. Both the chicken and beef sambusas are delicious and a great side addition to a platter. The workers are very polite. wow. The food speaks for itself, I won't even bother with descriptors here, and just say that the steak/chicken sugar sandwiches, platters, steak/chicken sambusas, are all awesome. Can't speak to the other meats, but I can't imagine they don't keep up the pace. The goat murek is the one thing that's sub stellar, but is still a 4/5. Owner is diligent and charismatic as can be, and you'd have a hard time finding a better food quality-to-price ratio anywhere. But the green sauce is the REAL rockstar. read more

I just randomly stumbled across this gem while waiting on the east side and I'm glad I did! The food is amazing! I ordered the chicken and basmati rice meal that came with all the sides and every single one was delicious! The portions are large so enough to have for a few meals. I had the Steak Sandwich was I thought was delicious. My boyfriend got the Chicken Stir Fry. It had raisins in it which we were both a little hesitant about at first, but it was an interesting flavor combination. The food here is excellent. I liked everything I thing I tried and love the sauces the food comes with. The sambusas and goat are my favorite! The best way to eat goat is bone-in as I feel it adds more flavor... in addition to that there were a few bones with marrow which is an extra special treat! Yum! I am fortunate enough to live near Blue Star Cafe and I try to eat here as often as I can. My go-to is the beef platter with rice and it's not only reasonably priced, it's enough food for two people. The spicy green sauce that comes with it is the secret to the meal, along with the kind and prompt service from the owners! I have a hard time ordering anything new but I once accidentally ordered the chicken crepe and it was just as incredible as the beef platter. Every once in a while as I'm walking home I will get pulled in by the enticing smell of the place and will bring home a few sambusas. You just can't go wrong eating at Blue Star! read more

stepped out on a warm sunday night to get dinner, wasn't sure where i'd end up. i ended up at this hidden gem, had never heard of it or seen it before. pretty nondescript place. very, very small and "homey," if you will. nothing fancy about it from the decor to the whole vibe. blue star cafe offers a small east african (somali focus) menu that packs a serious punch. entrees come in the form of sandwiches and platters, you choose the meat. i asked the kid working the register what his favorite was and he told me the goat was by far the most popular. easy decision. the goat here is extremely tender, almost falling off the bone. very flavorful and perfectly seasoned. i ordered basmati rice (with raisins, potatoes, vegetables, etc as i had hoped) as a side, also great. huge portions for very cheap prices. wildly enjoyable food. can't wait to go back, bring friends, etc. consider me a regular. read more

After walking for about a mile with my friends trying to find any place open on New Year's Day, we stumbled upon this restaurant and all I can say is "wow" the best things in life really do come in-expected. I ordered the goat plate with basmati rice,potato, and mixed grilled veggies. First off, the service here is 10/10. The staff there is extremely friendly and were focused on making sure my friends and I were satisfied at all times. Whether it was refilling our waters constantly or making sure the food came out on time, I seriously felt at home and can honestly say for a family owned, smaller niche restaurant the service was the best I've ever experienced in Milwaukee. The best part was when the food came and the plate I only payed $8-$9 dollars for was STACKED with stew and so much goodness. I am so happy because I got to bring my small town friends to a restaurant with food they've never even heard of before and they fell in love as well. We even had leftovers!! Blue Star is such a hidden gem and I encourage all of the foodies out there in Milwaukee to give it a try!! PS:The goat is so tender and falls right off the bone. In love with this place.
