I remember Ruta's from when they were at Crossroads but I don't remember being as impressed. They have tweaked and expanded their menu. I stopped by during an event for a neighboring business and got a chicken tikka bowl and I was floored. Not only was the curry and rice balanced by multiple flavorful vegetable sides, but there were lots of other intriguing-sounding combinations available. The rice bowls come in several "chef's" combinations like the tikka bowl and also as a customizable option where you pick a base (rice, quinoa, or salad), a protein, a curry sauce, and two veggies. There are also naan melts that come with a salad and a dipping sauce. I have since gone back and gotten a chickpea tomato masala bowl and it was just as flavorful, with its pickled radishes and turmeric carrots. The vegetable sides are also available to take home in 8 oz portions, which I may need to try since I can't stop thinking about them. Also they still have my favorite ImmuniTea. read more

I love, love, love the idea of fast casual Indian food. From the reviews, it sounds like Ruta's was at one point in the Crossroads Collective. They now have their own brick and mortar across the street from Purple door Ice Cream and next door to Float Milwaukee. Their location is clean and bright. We arrived and ordered a couple of their specialty dishes. I was with two other people and we all ordered a different specialty. Honestly, mine was a solid ok (but I'm thinking I just need to customize more next time). Two of the three in our party were neutral/nonplussed with our entrees and the third was happy. Newly opened in Crossroads Collective. We chatted with the owner while waiting for our food and he shared a lot of stories about how they came to Milwaukee from California to open this little cafe & interesting things about the restaurant's concept & food. Very nice and friendly people there. We were so excited to try their food! And the food didn't disappoint us. I liked my Anglo Indian Shepherd's Pie so much!!! So flavorful and creamy yet not too heavy. The salad was refreshing and nicely seasoned. Hubby thought his goa pulled pork was good too and I took a bite and could not agree more. Although the menu says it's cooked in spicy sauce, the pork didn't taste spicy. Just savory and went well with the kale salad and bread. We also got a house special hummus, a milk chocolate almond cookie, a ginger cookie and a iced immuni tea. The hummus and cookies (we took the cookies home and tried them later) were good. The immuni tea was refreshing and got some very interesting taste - it tasted like lemonade w spices followed by a kick of ginger. Overall, we had a refreshing, flavorful, balanced and not heavy Indian fusion lunch. I would say the price might be a bit high for the portion size. But great experience. Ruta's is is a great lunch spot to get a quick meal for the day. They have signature bowls for options and make your own bowl as well. I got the chicken mirchi quinoa bowl. I was surprised by the price of a bowl for the amount of food you get. The flavors in this bowl are okay but I definitely would have loved some spice. The garlic naan was great. Ruta's is just like its name- Vibrant and absolutely delicious. They blend Indian spices in a unique way to bring out the flavors of the meat and veggies. It's a unique twist of Indian dishes such as the slow cooked pulled pork bowl and Andhra chicken with lots of vegetables. Best kept secret- Try their food with local Milwaukee beer (we paired it with Black Husky IPAs). The cookies and bread pudding is also a must ry for that sweet tooth in you. I stumbled upon this place while walking around downtown and Im glad I did! They primarily serve indian food but in an Americanized way, i.e in the form of a bowl. I have tried two of their curries and it tasted just like home cooked food which I loved! Its hard to find Indian restaurants that are able to replicate the taste of home cooked indian meals while also keeping it nutritious, so this place definitely stands out to me. The service was prompt and ambience was fun since its sinside the crossroads collective that has a lot of other food spots too. The only thing that pinched me a little bit about the place was how expensive the bowl was for the quantity, 12$ for a bowl of curry and rice seems a lot, but if you do decide to splurge, it will definitely be worth the money. read more

Picked up food via curbside pickup which was pretty seamless and easy. The hot roast chicken panini was not what I expected, the inside was kind of like a warm chicken salad but it was delicious. Generous portion size too and came with some chips and pickled veggies on the side. The chocolate ganache bread pudding was also good and not too sweet. I did not opt for the ice cream on the side but it would have been a great addition. I tried the chai as well and it was not what I expected but rather a tea bag with spices mixed in. It was not sweet (which I preferred) but I would have liked stronger spice flavors overall. Overall a very interesting and unique menu! Whenever I go to Crossroads, I always get Ruta's. I pretend to look around at the other stands at the Collective, but I already know what I am getting. Each time I get Ruta's I get the roasted chicken sandwich. However, today, I opted to get the combo with that sandwich and the lentil soup. The lentil soup was amazing as was the sandwich. I actually preferred the combo because I am never able to finish the whole sandwich! The combo was $13 which I think is a very fair price for the amount and quality of food you get. The only reason I am giving it four stars is because it took quite a bit of time to get the food out this morning. We arrived around 11:10 am (so not many customers in the Collective in general) and waited until about 11:45/11:50am for our food to come out. Maybe someone new was behind the counter? Either way, I was starving and left happy but would have loved if I could have gotten the food a bit faster given the food hall environment (and my appetite!). read more

Hi, This is Dominic the food reviewer. Yesterday I tried Ruta's Vibrant Indian Cafe. It is located at 2238 N Farwell Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53202. They are located inside the Crossroads Collective. I got to talk to the owner Ruta. She told me she is from India. She also lived in California for many years. After living in California for awhile, she moved back to India for a decade and she ran many different types of restaurants over the years. When she moved back to the United States, she wanted a more family friendly place. So they visited Milwaukee and absolutely loved it here. She opened Ruta's in April 2021, and she works with her daughters here in the Collective. The ambiance of the stall has a very colorful menu and is a welcoming space. They also sell desserts on the counter that you can see. Ruta told me they make everything from scratch, even the bread, pickles, mustard and all the sauces. Ruta has written two cookbooks and is currently working on her third one. You can purchase one at her place too. For lunch, I tried their goa pork bowl which is slow cooked pork with spicy sauce, kale slaw and basmati rice. I thought my dish was very flavorful, especially the pork because it had a little kick to it and I thought it was very tasty. The kale slaw was very wonderful and succulent. My dad had the pulled pork melt which had hand shredded slow cooked pork, grilled onions and provolone cheese. My dad said it was amazing and the bread was very fresh and delicious. The owner Ruta was super friendly and pleasant to talk to. We felt like family during our meal there. She was so positive and friendly, it made our day so nice to talk to her. I would highly recommend checking this restaurant out because the food is extraordinary and the owner is so nice. In my opinion, this is some of the best Indian food you will ever try. read more

I ordered from Rutas on Postmates two times now and I feel like the food is really tasty. The food came really fast. So in terms of service they were ready to go. I've never been there in person so I can't speak to the ambiance or vibes. I gobbled their food down both times, but for some reason my stomach is rumbling and churning. This happened to me on the first time and I thought there was just some acid reflux or some spice not sitting right. Everything looks good and tastes fresh. This time the chicken was a tiny bit pink but not so pink it became inedible. I don't know why my stomach is churning... they have great reviews...? I probably won't order anymore now. I don't have a weak stomach, and I love spicy food. I eat these same spices at home all the time. So why should my stomach rumble? A new take on Indian food. You get to build your own bowl or sandwich. Choose your base, I chose quinoa, then you add your choice of protein, sauce, veggies (you get to choose 4) and finally choose a topping sauce ( I chose a cooling yogurt). Naan on the side is extra, to be honest it was not the tradition naan I love getting at Indian restaurants, this is prepackaged naan that is heated up. The portions were very generous. Been meaning to try this place for a long while and we finally picked up a few carry-out dishes as part of a global smorgasbord on NYE; what a treat! "Vibrant" is the right word. "Light" or "fresh" would also work. We enjoy traditional Indian food places but know enough to understand that, like many international cuisines, most US iterations have become heavy, stale and locked in to a particular era and particular menu stand-bys. Lookie there, the good ol' saag paneer, the chana masala and, of course, the Desi answer to General Tso's famous Chinese fowl, the ubiquitous chicken tikka. Ruta's is different. You can tell the chef has travelled and is unafraid to experiment, all while retaining the best techniques and flavors of India. For example, since it was NYE, she concocted a curry dish made from black-eyed peas--a legume one doesn't usually associate with the subcontinent--that was an interesting twist on traditional dal. Just our luck! (It should be noted that Ms. Creasote loathes blackeyed peas, but somehow this dish caught her fancy.) We also enjoyed the sublime roast pork panini that we hope is still there next time we visit, which will be real soon. read more

I really wish I could give a better review of this spot today. Had a "kali chicken naanwich". Advertised as spicy with two hot pepper symbols next to it on the board. Unfortunately, this was about as spicy the mild hot sauce in my fridge and didn't give much in regard to Indian spice. The chicken was also a weird texture and more like a "beyond meat" . The pickled veggies were great but this sandwich could use some changes. read more
