Fast, delicious, friendly diner food. Chocolate chip pancakes and fish cakes were tremendous.

We were a group of 14 family members, in town for a wedding. We were extremely well treated when we entered the diner asking if they could accommodate such a large group at one table. Within ten minutes, we were seated in an almost private room, looking over an extensive breakfast and lunch menu. Everyone was delighted with their choices; the waitress was superb, putting up with so many and with extraordinary patience as some changes their orders and asked questions. All with a big smile and generous spirit. The food arrived in good order, especially considering our large number, and it was spot on diner delicious. It added to our feeling of well being and celebration on the family getaway weekend. So happy to have found this delightful spot. read more

Solid diner, and a regular spot for my family over the years. There is a classic old dining car on the right with a counter, a handful of booths, and the ubiquitous pie case...and then on the left, there is a large, newer dining room with big comfy booths that will seat as many as 6 or 8 people each, a toy train that occasionally circles overhead on a track that runs around the perimeter of the ceiling, and a juke box...and behind that is the "lounge" with handicap entrance, a full bar, free self-serve popcorn cart in the corner, and an assortment of booths and tables...then beyond that is the banquet room. As other reviewers have mentioned, don't get the mashed potatoes unless you're in one of those moods where you're all about gravy and don't really care what lies beneath. They're instant. You've been warned. I also would suggest steering clear of the salads. It's possible that they've changed...I haven't tried them in quite a while...but they never used to be very good, and even the "entree" sized ones were served in smallish bowls and consisted mostly of iceberg lettuce. Some of our standard faves: Thursdays are the corned beef day at the Bluebonnet, and Bluebonnet's corned beef is surprisingly FANTASTIC. I highly recommend the New England Boiled Dinner special (all of the specials are offered all day, not just for dinner). It consists of a healthy serving of corned beef, cabbage, turnip, a couple of new potatoes, and some baby carrots. If you ask nicely, they will omit some and give you extra of others (I always get just cabbage and turnip and skip the potatoes and carrots). Split pea soup. Like the specials, the soups change daily and as my luck would have it, my favorite Bluebonnet soup (split pea) happens to be available on the same day as my favorite special (boiled corned beef dinner). Thursdays. It's always a last-minute decision which to get. Corned beef hash. This is on the menu on Fridays, conveniently following boiled dinner Thursdays :) Tuesdays are meatloaf days and it's consistently good. Nothing fancy, but solid comfort food (and a big portion -- enough to take home leftovers). Turkey club. Big, straight-forward. Western sandwich. I get mine grilled on rye with swiss cheese. Highly recommend requesting cheese otherwise things can be fairly dry. Broasted chicken. I don't think it says so on the menu, but you can actually get any of the chicken pieces a la carte, and they're cheap. I think the drumsticks and thighs may be something like $1 each, and the breast $2? So if you're getting something light, like a bowl of soup, a piece of broasted chicken can be a good add-on. Or if you're getting something completely unrelated but the curiosity is killing you, cough up the $1 and grab a broasted drumstick. Omelet. They're not on the lunch/dinner menu, but they're available all day so don't be afraid to ask. They're the big and fluffy kind that has the "filling" ingredients mixed right into the egg rather than folded inside, and they come with toast and homefries. "Oatmeal a la Eric" ...this was my father's daily order at the counter because Eric always made it al dente for him, rather than mushy. Bluebonnet's sides change daily, but there are usually a dozen or so to choose from at any given time. I love the fried eggplant. It comes with marinara on the side for dipping. Onion rings. Breaded rather than battered, not greasy, REALLY good. They always have a selection of freshly baked pies for dessert, but we are pudding people and usually go for either the grape-nut or bread puddings. read more

The waitress was outstanding, I tip everyone because I'm aware of the tips as part of the wage, but when a waitress or waiter doesn't have to be asked to refill my drink you are definitely my favorite, gave me time to make up my mind saw when to bring out the desert. The place was never great to begin with but it's leveled out at dismal. For years their calling card was "Broasted Chicken" whatever the hell that really ever was.. We ordered a grilled turkey and cheese. Got served dry turkey and a slice of American cheese uncooked on cold toast. I mean, who screws up grilled turkey and cheese? Bluebonnet does..and then has the audacity to charge $10.83 ($10.83 wut?) for it. The place is probably the most charmless diner in New England. No soap in the ladies room. Where does the staff wash their hands? I would give this place a solid 3 as a diner, but the lack of soap in the ladies room leaves me no choice but to rate it 2-stars. Service and the food was good, however the portions were a little bit small and the prices were a little on the high side. I'd expect more than a handful of fries when you're charging extra for fries with a sandwich. I would definitely have given this place another shot because of its convenient location, but it's unacceptable for any place serving food to have no soap in the rest rooms. read more

Please for the love of all things holy change the layout of the menu. From the comic sans to the lacking amount of space in between options it is incredibly hard to read. Even just putting the name of the menu item in bold and leaving the details normal would go along way. Or even a line division for each section. It was very interesting for sure. We've been there many many times before but nothing like this experience. I get prices are high all over but $55 for a 3 piece broasted chicken dinner and a pot roast dinner? Oh wait... a cup of chowder was $7 not to mention the $1.50 upcharge for a side salad with no cucumbers - was told they didn't have any at the moment. Go to the grocery store and buy some! BUT that was not even the best part of it --- we were seated at a dirty table, I had to ask to have it cleaned. One waitress took our drink order and another came by to see if we were ready to order our meals, the waitress with our drinks told her it was her table to leave. That was uncomfortable. We order our food. While waiting the original waitress comes over with food on her face and says I am not sure what is going to happen and then walks away. No explanation. Our food comes and it is brought by the waitress that was yelled at to leave our table in the first place. She has no taken over our table. While eating another waitress rather loudly proceeds to talk about how she likes golfing because she likes to look at the young men in golf shorts that show off their backsides (not the words she used). The table next to us ask a waitress walking by for a refill on their drinks - she says okay - the waitress who was just talking about the golfers from more than 10 feet away yells at her to get away from her station. It was horrible. Very uncomfortable all the way around. A place that we have been coming to 3 or more times a month for 10 years - is officially no longer a place we will drive 30 minutes to eat at. Control your staff. Let other's help if you are busy with other things like gossiping. Done. read more

Pretty solid no flair diner fair, I must admit it has been eons since I last ate there but things are pretty much the same as I remember. I ordered the beef stew, it looked more like a soup than stew when it arrived;however, it was quite flavorful, had a nice assortment of vegetables including turnip and it was filling, perfect for a quick in and out lunch. Worst service ever and very overpriced for diner food. It was my friends birthday and we waited over 45 minutes for our food. One of our friends food didn't come until the rest of us were already done eating. Then it took another 45 minutes for us to pay. Our server Lisa was very rude and made us feel like it was our fault everything was getting messed up. One of us was over an hour late for work because of the service. The food was pretty good, but definitely not worth the price. As a waitress myself I am usually very patient and understanding of wait staff, however there is no excuse for this type of service. My wife and I had breakfast here on a Wednesday in April 20221. We liked it. We were staying at the Hotel Northampton, about a half-mile away, but the hotel's restaurants are closed. Our waitress, Diane was excellent. The food is not fancy but it is good. The place is popular and despite the pandemic there were many tables occupied. The menu is standard diner stuff and the prices are normal. Everything is normal here. We want to go back again to the Bluebonnet. read more

Bluebonnet is right down the street from me and I have always thought about going. It looks pretty plain on the outside but it is definitely now my go-to diner once I tried it. I'M HOOKED. I didn't have much of an appetite so I ordered a plain omelette with sausage, home fries, and rye bread. My boyfriend ordered corn beef hash. When we quickly received our dishes, the omelette was exactly what I was looking for according to my picky appetite. The omelette was also a great combo with the rye bread. YUM! The corn beef hash was probably the best that I've ever had because it wasn't too salty and tasted very simple. I have bee dinning there for breakfast, lunch and dinner for years, last year they started raising prices that are now to high. When you go to for lunch and get a basic burger and soda it will cost you $15 dollars plus tip, the waitresses are great and live off tips , can't afford those prices , i had a dinner without a dessert and with top for one person it was $30 dollars food was good but not great, don't think I will be back. This is diner Americana at its finest, and the only real honest-to-goodness diner experience in the Valley. Due to its unapologetic authenticity, you won't find any students going here - which is a good thing. This is a townie place, where much of the local blue collar folk and nice old people go to enjoy a nice meal and a slice of pie. Hello timewarp! The food is what you'd expect from a dinner: Simple comfort food; and while you won't find anything here that will blow your mind the food is very cheap compared to the other diners in the valley many. I was wandering around the outskirts of northampton waiting for my car to get a tune up and found myself desperately hungry. When I first walked by, I wasn't sure about the place, but saw very content people leaving and a crowded parking lot, so i decided to check it out. SO GLAD I WENT HERE. the regulars know what's up and have a fun relationship with the waitresses. speaking of those waitresses, they are awesome and will provide you with the perfect diner experience. they all seem to have adorable old-school names and tough yet caring attitudes. i was served quickly and the food was delicious. there was one moment where everyone working there got pretty cranky with each other and it provided some seriously good entertainment. despite their little tiff, they all helped their customers, moved quickly, and did it all with a smile. i think the people working here really add to the charm of this cute, diner with savory food offerings. read more

It's a pretty typical example of a lazy family-style resturaunt. Read, don't go here for the food. Many things are boxed or canned. If Sysco makes it, they'll use that version. Yes, even for mashed potatoes or a pork chop. As a result, a lot of the food looks and tastes more like it would be at home on a hospital tray than a on family dinner table. If you want this type of a restauraunt, go to the Route Nine instead. Much better representation of independent family dining; The Waitly if you don't do Greek diners and/or want dive. Why an extra star? Well, their chicken croquettes aren't bad. Not amazing, but probably above average for diner fare. Breakfasts as generically inoffensive and they can pull off a sandwich. The only diner in Northampton, and easily the only one needed. The atmosphere is pretty relaxed, and there is even an authentic diner bar in the front room. The back room has bigger tables, and a bar. The food is pretty good, but its a diner after all so don't expect anything super good. I've never had anything that I regret, and they always have some solid specials. The service I've experienced has been varied, but usually ranges on the positive side. There have been couple occasions where an off-duty waitress had to step in to help wait on the table. This shows dedication to the job, but also shows signs of inexperience or inability to handle multiple tables. All in all, Blue Bonnet is a great diner that serves up a great meal. read more

I may give this spot another chance some day, but after having eaten twice at the Route 9 Diner, I doubt it. I paid almost 10 bucks for a pretty small chef's salad with a boiled egg, deli ham, deli turkey and American cheese, iceberg lettuce, tomato, and maybe a couple pieces of cucumber. Down the road, the same sawbuck yields a salad twice the size with more lettuce, more tomato, more cumber, onions, endive, red and green pepper and bountiful hot, fresh cooked cajun or buffalo chicken. I'm often amazed by how far from reality some of these yelps reviews are, and the reviews for this place are no exception. This place is a diner so expectations were low going in. Many people love this place and its usually pretty crowded which tells a lot about the type of people that live in the area. (Not too diverse) The menu itself is gross with items like liver and croquettes being featured. Even the simplest hamburg is just plain old awful, bland, small and boring straight from the freezer to the frying pan and no fries to boot. Once and while friends and I will go here just to see how much worse it can get and they never let us down. Almost nothing is freshly made. Everything has been canned, previously frozen or even last nights leftovers. The place is so overpriced for what you get its amazing that people come here, its truly baffling. Our hungry crew spent the day hiking around the mountains so we were plenty ready for a good meal. Bingo, there was the DINER sign and it clinched it for us. The place was surrounded by cars on every side so we surmised that this was the place to be, on a Wednesday night no less. I had roast beef club, potato salad, pale ale. My reason to return again to Northampton. I moved to Northampton for work, and searched yelp etc for places to eat. This place was very close, and is the only reason I am sad I left that apt. I have routinely eaten dinner there, and ordered to-go for lunch the next day! I visited three times ordering things on specials like stuffed peppers ) a second helping became the next day's lunch), stuffed chicken cutlet (breaded, stuffed with broc and cheese-- was expecting more cheese, but nonetheless, for my -- $7-8, very worth it), etc. They both came with two amazing sides (I recommend the fried eggplant, mashed turnips, and OMG the mashed butternut squash- AMAZING) I finally found a day where I wasn't completely into the special (which they then soon ran out of anyway, must have been good!) So I ordered a very cheap, whole belly clam plate. ($14? wow) It was so light, hot, crispy, was veryyyy good! It also came with two delicious sides. My usual fried eggplant, and some delicious boiled cabbage (my first time to try it). Who woulda thunk? Amazing clams in the west end of MA? --Oh, and by this point I had moved OUT of Northampton, and returned solely for dinner! Lunch the next day was a delicious chicken/peper/onion.mushroom/(I added tomatoes too) My only complaint is that the rest of the menu doesn't look as exciting, the usual sandwiches, breakffast, burgers, etc.... I love those specials, and definitely will keep coming back. Eh.... I guess one more complain: the pies are kinda eh.... banana cream was kindve half way decent, but the chocolate cream (a personal FAVE.... was kinda cruddy choc pudding, with very little cream, and a couple choc chips on top..... sigh. I will stick to savory here. OH. And there's a great young server: Nick. Who was a pleasure to speak with and be served by, knowledgeable, friendly, responsive to needs. I 've been wanting to check this place out so I deliberetly stopped in for a late breakfast. It was OK, I cetainly won't make a special trip there for a meal however, the puddings are fantastic. I ordered traditional eggs, pot., toast the potatoes were undercooked, so I saved them to take home to get them just right. Eggs were a bit on the greezzy side. From what I saw looking around the food is Ok, I didn't see anything special about it. The grape-nut pudding is fantastic as was the bread pudding I ordered to go.
