Cruel, Greedy, and apparently Incompetent Our little cat had been struggling with a hyperthyroid problem, was on medication for months and showing little improvement. He was extremely skinny. He had a few very bad days and on his last morning he had crawled into his bed and was barely breathing. He stayed like this for hours but seemed peaceful. We hoped that he would just sleep and pass away. After not moving for most of the day, with very shallow breaths and glazed eyes he began to have severe muscle spasms. We realized that he was not going to go easily and did not want our young granddaughter to witness this. Our regular vet was not available. Over the past 50 years we have had many pets and had to have a few euthanized. It's heartbreaking but had never before left us feeling disgusted. We took Kitty to Bluegrass Emergency Clinic. A staff member took him to another room while we waited. Another staff member came in and explained that the cost would be $265. This seemed extreme compared to our previous experiences of perhaps $65 but we were able to pay the cost. Kitty was brought back to us, wrapped in his towel, with a bandage around each front leg and an IV attached. We got to say a final goodbye and the doctor administered a few separate injections. The whole process seemed strangely complex. Kitty was returned to us in a box and we brought him home for burial. I thought that my elderly, Diabetic cat was dying this past Saturday morning around 1-2am. He was having terrible seizures and was becoming minimally responsive. Upon arrival at Bluegrass Veterinary Specialists (BVS) my cat was immediately taken back by a Tech and started on some anti seizure medication(s). I was told that his temperature went as high as 107 and then went down to 92. I was also told that his glucose/blood sugar was 22 and he had no pupillary response. The Tech was very empathetic and patient with us. I decided to pursue treatment and my cat stayed in their ICU. When I received an update on how he was doing that afternoon, I was told that he was awake, alert and eating and I was encouraged to visit him. He stayed overnight there that night.The staff/providers at Bluegrass Veterinary Specialists (BVS) saved my cat's life and I am so, so grateful to them. read more

The vet tech was so rude didn't let us know what was going on with our dog at any point and they made us wait without any updates and came in while we could hear our dog crying and had the worst attitude and then slammed the door in our place. I do not recommend coming here. The pricing and the fees are beyond unimaginable, they do not work with income nor care about your situation & pet. The financial lady told me my dog was going to die and sign up for a credit card. With tears in my eyes, I told her I could not afford it. She been shrugged her shoulders and says well call someone who can. The receptionist was very nice, but talking to ladies with pricing felt very judgmental on low income. I can't give enough praise to Bluegrass Veterinary Specialists and Animal Emergency. Dr. Spencer-Below, veterinary nurse Victoria, another woman at the front desk, and the DVM resident (sorry, I did not catch the latter two's names, but they were both amazing and helped us during the day on 4/1/23), were so compassionate, professional, brilliant/smart, personable, and all around amazing. We were so impressed with the care and communication we were provided. The efficiency, kindness, and calmness, with which said care was delivered was second to none. I couldn't believe what a wonderful and clean ambience the place was either. We were so impressed, relieved, and delighted to have stumbled into your clinic that day! Both of us dog parents are health care providers, and so we are not exactly low maintenance and were quite wordy/helicopter-y. Everybody, including Dr. Spencer-Below, was SO PATIENT AND KIND with us, you would think we were their first clients to ever walk through the door. From the time we called ahead and were encouraged to make the 90 minute drive up, to the direct/thorough communication, eye contact, smiles, constant phone updates - everything was perfect. They even followed up with us over the phone the next day, and have been super responsive to me over email as I work with our pet insurance's documentation requests. We appreciated that they factored in our remote location when trying to decide on conservative vs. more aggressive diagnostics/treatment. We also noted that they went above and beyond with their efforts to be extremely cost conscious and transparent, involving us in the cost decisions in a transparent, nonjudgmental, and non-pushy way. The care our pup got should honestly set the standard for human healthcare too. Being that we travel to rural Kentucky a lot, we feel so relieved to know where we will be going for urgent/emergent pet care needs in the future. Thank you for being open 24/7 as well. Stopped in last week for a significant orthopedic injury in our cat. Staff was professional and friendly. They were not pushy about treatment and laid out all the options. Dr. Austin has been amazing with both of our dogs on separate scary occasions. She was able to remove a large (8in!) fatty tumor that another vet office couldn't, which really improved (12yM) Kodas quality of life. And then, when our (11yM) Brody suddenly started to seize and needed immediate care, she was able to bring him comfort, and he was able to be laid to rest peacefully. My husband's mom was caring for Brody while we were out of town, and Dr. Austin was so patient and understanding as we worked to navigate help for his mom and had to make tough decisions through many phone calls. The front office was very empathetic and kind as well. When we picked up Brody, they made the sweetest simple arrangements for him. There's no other vets office that I trust more. read more

I took my cat, Lucky, to Bluegrass because one of his eyes was super dilated and the other wasn't. They took my cat to the back and left me in a waiting room for a really long time. After almost two hours, I asked what was going on and was told that I came in during a shift change and they also had an emergency (an animal coded). OK, I get that, but it would have been nice if someone came and updated me once in a while. Anyway, I was told that Lucky was comfortable and had been seen and someone would be right in to discuss his after care with me. Twenty minutes later, still nothing. So I went to the counter and demanded my pet. That's when the doctor came out and said your cat isn't well, we can proceed with the visit. It was clear that they had only triaged Lucky, and not actually evaluated his situation. I asked how long until she would actually see him and she said, we are an emergency clinic. it depends on how many emergencies we get. mind you I had been there for two and a half hours. She wouldn't even give me a guess as to how much longer I may have to wait. She was sarcastic and not at all compassionate. I took my cat and we went to UrgentVet at Summit and I am so glad I did! They were welcoming and warm and compassionate. Highly recommend UrgentVet!!!! read more

This place is a joke. Don't know how to take proper temp taking it under leg even though my dog was panting the whole time. They said temp was normal. They took him from the exam room we were in to another room to examine him. They said everything looks fine even though he wasn't eating or couldn't use the bathroom. They gave us some nausea and diarrhea medicine and an probiotic. That was $400.00. They said bring him back if he gets worse. We took him to his regular vet the next day because he was worse. His temp was 104 and within 5 minutes of the exam they discovered a large mass in his colon and protruding out his side. They said there was nothing they could do because of the size of it and we had to put him down. So there's no way they did an exam and gave us a bunch of medicine he didn't need. Out of the two 24 hour vets in town, this is the preferred vet. They have higher pricing than our regular vet, but so do emergency rooms compared to our physician. We still have to go here and there. They communicated fairly well with us in terms of how they want to care, and later, how they cared. As for the three stars .. the place is crazy understaffed. The time we were in we were told a 2-3 hour wait and there were 3 other families waiting to check in. No one came out to greet them or check them for 30 min. The next morning the vet tech brought my cat out and I noticed something that needed to be rechecked. She took her back and said they are very understaffed right now so it'll be a wait. I get when a place is left in a bind. The downside is that there are animals coming in who may not have a 30 minute wait to be seen, let alone a 2-3 hour wait. They truly care about your animals. I would expect them to be proactive and have vets on call or an extra vet hired. Maybe lack of talented vets in the area? That is something to consider. By far one of the worst most predatory vet clinics I've ever come across. The minute I questioned why they were doing unnecessary procedures the level of care went to zero. Basically pushed out the door because a full blood /liver panel and rays were declined as a course of action( for a puncture wound) I don't know what kind of idiot gave this place a license to practice but they should be ashamed. you don't need either of those things to treat a dog bite/ puncture Wound. They clearly overcharge based on the emotions of the pet owners. Then refused to issue any pain meds for The animal claiming that it would be illegal! What kind of complete idiot says that? Unless maybe her license isn't valid? additionally no follow up instructs whatsoever, no way would I take an animal to this facility. anyone that works there should be embarrassed and shamed And anyone who takes their animal their should seek better care if they love their animal. read more

Brought in a stray cat that had gotten hit by a car, staff seemed to not do their due diligence with a thorough exam and gave little information as to what was wrong with the cat forcing a decision between a treatment that they could not provide or euthanization. Ended up having to put the cat down so that it was no longer suffering as its breathing began to get worse, very sad and unfortunate experience and a devastating outcome for an animal that didn't deserve it, especially when there are people that took the time to bring it in and help and would have provided a loving home for it after it was healthy enough. I recently took my cat, Sammy, in for an echocardiogram to monitor his heart murmur. Everyone from the reception desk, I believe her name is Lauren, to the doctor were very welcoming and gave outstanding customer service. Dr. Antu Radhakrishnan is amazing! He explained in full detail options for treatment. He also informed me that follow up echos are at a discounted rate to help with follow up treatment. This is extremely helpful since vet bills can quickly add up. I have been to other specialist offices that did not offer a discounted rate and am thankful that BVS does. Don't trust these money grabbing sickos. My dog was attacked while we were out of town and he spent 3 or 4 hours in their office with a gaping piece of his flesh tore off. They gave him pain meds. They didn't give him any antibiotics. They didn't suture the wound or even bandage it. They left him in there waiting for me to make a decision and they scared me that he was dying. They said he needed to be put into an oxygen tank of some sort and tht he had brain damage and his eyes weren't reacting. They made me think he had no chance. As soon as I saw him I knew that he was shaken but that he was doing fine and they were trying to scare me into a $2500 dollar plus bill where they did a ton of unnecessary things and made the biggest bang for their buck. They didn't even have the decency to bandage him up until I asked them to before taking him home so he could see his vet. They charged us 600 dollar for an X-ray, Ultrasound, and one pain shot and didn't even have the decency to bandage him. Sad people work here that do not care about animals. They care about money. His vet patched him up for 400 dollars and he's running around the house right now the day after. The lady who discharged said he would likely go down fast in the middle of the night and to be prepared for him to need to come back. Really sad. I wouldn't take any animal here, they would probably be better off just dying at home. read more

I have a half Australian/half German Shepard mix. He was born with hip dysplasia on his hind legs. He is now almost 150 pounds, approaching 4 years old. This past fall, he went out in the yard and came in limping, not bearing any weight on one of his hind legs. Considering he was born with hip dysplasia, my first guess was that he had irritated the hip joint. After a few days passed without him putting pressure on the leg, I took him into my local vet (Louisville). After maneuvering the leg and performing an X-Ray, I was informed that he actually tore his ACL. Of course, anxiety kicked in as I worried what the future would look like regarding his health. After doing research, not finding a single veterinarian surgeon in Louisville that would be able to perform the surgery for at least 4 months, I expanded my horizons to the surrounding cities. Luckily I found Bluegrass Animal Hospital that was happy to set up appointment within the month! the whole process was convenient, the staff were more than polite, the surgery went amazing, and after about 3 months of recovery, my 4 legged friend has regained mobility in his knee as if nothing happened in the first place! I appreciate the service that was provided, me and my family are more than grateful, and I would recommend this hospital to anyone in need! read more

Bluegrass Veterinary Specialists took great care of my cat after he had a series of seizures. I brought him in after midnight, and they took him and got him stabilized. They kept me informed over the next few days about his condition and were always very friendly over the phone. Sadly we had to euthanize my cat, but Dr. R. made the process as comfortable as it could be for both me and my cat. They had my cat cremated in less than a week and sent me back the ashes as well as his paw print. I was very satisfied with that service. I was really touched that they sent me a card with many handwritten messages from the staff. If I ever have another animal emergency I won't hesitate to go there again. read more

If I could give them 0 stars I would. Dr Roan "treated" our pet during emergency hours. We waited for almost 5 hours without being allowed in the building and with very limited communication. After we finally requested the return of our pet, Dr Roan brought her out, gave very little information on her findings and felt it necessary to place a guilt trip on us by indicating that there were several pets in critical condition and that families were crying on the sidewalk. We were fully aware of that situation and didn't need it pointed out to us. Simply stated, better communication and compassion for our pet, who was also in emergency care, would have made all the difference. read more

Be wary of the clinic services this place offers. I took 3 male cats and only left with 2 because they rehomed one and failed to call when the others were done. I 2as told an hour and 5 hours later I showed up as they were closing to pick them up. They were in a crate over 12 hours with not water or bathroom. When I asked about getting my cat back I was told he was better off... They know nothing of me or my life just that I needed help fixing my cats. So be warned this place is not what it appears. While I was in the building I watched them drag a sedated 60 lbs adult dog by his back legs from one room to another across the floor. As they told the family to go buy a sheet so they could drag him out to the car! I lost a cat please don't let this happen to you!!! read more

If you want your pet to live, please do not trust this clinic. My one experience here was HORRIBLE and TRAGIC. After my friend's dog appeared to have a seizure, we rushed him to this office. Once in the exam room, we were seen by FIVE different technicians, each of whom did NOTHING to help the dog. The concern of each of the technicians was not the health of the dog, but rather the amount of money my friend would be able to pay for his care. While waiting in the exam room, the receptionist even knocked on the door and told the technician hassling us for money at the time, to get us out of the room because they had other "real" emergencies and needed the room. In the end the dog was given a shot for pain, blood work, and sent home with an antibiotic. The vet said the dog should be fine and to have him checked by his normal vet the next day. Within an hour of taking the dog home and giving him the antibiotic, the beloved pet of 11 years was dead. I was absolutely horrified by the lack of concern EVERY person we came in contact with at this office showed for my friend's pet. The bottom line for this office is money, certainly not the well-being of the animals. Please beware of having your pet treated here. I wouldn't want anyone else to put trust in a clinic that would not treat a dog having a seizure as a "real" emergency, and simply send it home to die. read more

The staff were very friendly. We brought my dog Bailey here on a Sunday morning after she was in a fight with another dog in which she had a huge rip on the back of her neck. They got us in a room right away but it was a long wait in the room. They did have staff come in and apologize. Being one of only a few vets open on a Sunday that is expected I would think. They went over the fees thoroughly. They took good care oft dog and got her sutured up. Dr. Foley was very personable and friendly and took time to answer any questions we had. If you ever find yourself in a situation that brings you here. I would highly recommend them. read more

I have several dogs. Sammy was very old (15) and decided it was time. Time for him, but not for me. I called my regular vet, who despite being only 2 blocks from my house, told me to take him to Bluegrass, which I did. Unfortunately, by the time I got there, Sammy was essentially gone. I cannot speak highly enough of this practice. I will be using them going forward and not just for emergencies. The staff was caring and understanding, there was no pressure, and everyone clearly knew the grief of losing my dog. Today I received a condolence card in the mail, and I know that's standard practice, but it truly meant a lot. I thank Dr. Bowden (sp?) and the staff. You're terrific. read more

Called BG Vets to see if I could pickup antibiotics for my German Shepherd due to an infection after surgery. Was told I had to bring my pet in to be checked out. Getting my 65 lb dog in & out of the suv is a big concern due to her surgery, but we went in for the visit since the matter could not wait until Monday. My complaint is that after sitting there for 1 1/2 hrs, it was STRONGLY SUGGESTED that I leave & use "other options". I had been there longer than anyone else in the waiting room & wondered why this was not said to the person that just came through the door. Nor was this expressed to anyone calling in during the additional 1 1/2 hrs wait. I know there were emergencies that needed attention, but WHAT KIND OF VET OFFICE ASKS YOU TO LEAVE AFTER YOU HAVE BEEN THERE SO LONG? Again I have concerns about my dog getting in & out of the suv while she is healing from surgery. I do know that one lady with a cat that came in long after me, turned around and apologized while she was checking out. IT WAS EVIDENT TO HER THAT MY DOG WAS NOT GETTING ATTENTION. Again my complaint is not about the 3 hour wait. Of course emergencies happen & need attention first. You do not tell someone to bring their healing pet in & then ask them to leave after 1 1/2 hours. My pet deserves care also. The tech that waited on us either needs a logic class or get out of the profession. read more

Well the people were friendly but they wanted to cut my dogs leg off because it was broken. So after spending $650 there for them looking at her I figured I would get a second opinion. So we go to a vet in Hazard, Ky and they say oh yeah we can fix her leg no problem. Long story short, my dog is running and playing now with no limp I might add. Total cost for surgery $1,300. Basically just doubled of what I paid for these people to just look at my dog. Like I said the people there are friendly but I don't think they had the best interest in mind for my dog. Plus prices are pretty high. read more

Our cat, Fuzzy Cat, was referred to Bluegrass Vet Clinic due to severe illness. The staff was very friendly and caring while immediately putting a treatment plan in place. Unfortunately, Fuzzy Cat was diagnosed with feline leukemia. The doctor and staff were very caring and supportive during this emotional process. A few weeks ago we had to take our sweet bichon late at night after it being recommended by our vet. We were very emotional knowing that something was not right. We are very grateful for the kindness we were shown that night. We had to put our sweet Kooper down, but the people working that night showed kindness to our dog as well. I have never felt so strongly against an establishment to write a review, but when the care of my pet is compromised, it is necessary. I brought my dog in for three stitches in her paw about two weeks ago, followed all instructions, and had them removed after 12 days. The wound almost immediately split open, and I called BVS in tears. I explained my situation, and received no useful information on how to cure my dog. I also was made VERY aware that they would not see her again for any discount, and that I should just put myself in more debt with "care credit" for her to be seen again. I called this morning and spoke to a very rude supervisor, and will now be taking my dog to another veterinarian in Northern Kentucky. I feel like it is extremely scary that three stitches wouldn't hold and they are considered a specialty hospital. read more
