I had scheduled surgery after hearing Dr. Kiefer's plan, but then my dog stopped showing signs of being uncomfortable. As the surgery day approached, I was feeling apprehensive about her undergoing general anesthesia for something that was not bothering her. The receptionist talked me through the options, and I decided to cancel surgery. At no point was I pressured to keep the appointment. I appreciate Blue Pearl's expertise and professionalism. Traumatized my dog & didn't even realize he was a boy after physically examining him! Negative stars. Before Dr Cioffi even saw him or talked to me, the tech took him to the back for "tests" that they said they couldn't do in the consult room with me present. When they brought him back, he was shaking, pacing, panting & whining. Dr Cioffi kept calling my dog "she/her" until I pointed out that he is an intact male. She seemed genuinely surprised & tried to look under him for his balls! The report afterwards was factually wrong on things like what medications he was on & how they affected him, and what his diet was. It was a horrifying experience. UPDATE: The comments below just prove how they don't read. I didn't take my dog in for emergency services. It was an appointment with referral from my primary vet, full bloodwork & exam. If you have been struggling finding the way to save your dog's life and finally get to read this, I wish you the best... please remember to take deep breath and have faith. Our journey was years ago but as of now 2022 we still have a very healthy dog who makes us happy every day. Thought I should share. Long story, after total 5 vets, hopeless, and wasted a lot of money. We finally got to an internal medicine vet who diagnosed our dog with liver shunt - one of reasons that caused seizures. He referred us to Dr Simpson right away. Decision for big operation had made overnight. Liver surgery for a 4 year old healthy looking dog was beyond stress. It's not at all easy process but everything went well. She is now turning 9 and honestly every day we look at her it's like she has a second life just to have more years with us. The surgeon was very focused and straight forward, maybe a little too straight when she wanted us to give the answer yes or no at the consultation so she can book another surgery in that slot. We of course need it desperately but 4 thousands dollars of unknown result we need to take a moment. That's the only overwhelmed part from overall experience here. But Dr obviously a grade A surgeon who is able to fix our dog. Don't expect her to be sweet and caring. That's not her. But the surgery result is all we cared about. Our pup was there for 5 nights after surgery for seizure watch. Their night-shift staff was beyond amazing. She picked up our phone call every night and spent time talking to us to make sure we can go sleep knowing our pup is taken care of. We called multiple times some nights and she's always good to us. At the end Dr gave a little discount. So the amount was estimated to start I know it could be more or less but it's a nice gesture after this hard journey. We are very thankful but hope we don't have to go back there ever again (which is a good thing!). Bless all doggies that have to come here and hope they all be healthy and happy again. They have been wonderful. They have been very clear with everything, direct, and compassionate. They gave a quote, and that's what it cost. Our situation involved two surgeries on his front and hind leg. We messed up the healing of the hind leg. He got out, and blew out his knee. I was strapped for cash to fix it. The surgeon was so concerned about the dog that he opted to do his part for free, and it cut the cost down drastically, making it affordable to do a repair surgery. That was some honest just for the better of the animal compassion. I have been impressed with them from the start, but that was some above and beyond. Our pup had surgery here about a month ago. Surgeons were very accessible prior to surgery, but not so much post op. Concerns were not addressed at all. Luckily, pup is healing very well. I gave a 3 for non-responsiveness post op, medication cost being double (at least) what you would pay at your personal vet, and filthy cone our dog came home with following surgery. read more

Just across from the DMV in Cedar Hills, these folks treated our cat Phoebe for a serious carcinoma on her leg. Dr. Simpson is board certified and wow is she good. She calmly described the situation, assessed prognosis, and together we moved forward with Phoebe's best option, amputation. About six months ago my poor little Pomchi, Tia, was outside chasing squirrels - her favorite hobby - and injured her leg pretty good when making a sudden turn. As a result Tia needed to have an ACL and patella repair performed on her left leg. I was quite nervous about Tia having this surgical procedure, as she is about 10 years old and her leg is SOOO tiny. But we moved forward with it nonetheless, as I thought she was still entirely too young to write-off full use of her rear legs. To make a long story short, the procedure went beautifully. Dr. Munjar at VSCP is an outstanding surgeon, and I was (and still am) in complete awe that he was able to successfully perform this complex surgery on such a tiny leg. I just took Tia in yesterday for her final check-up, and everything on the radiographs looked good. Tia is also fully back to her normal & happy self, although I am currently struggling with trying to push her squirrel chasing hobby into retirement. I would highly recommend Dr. Munjar in the unfortunate event your pet needs his surgical services. Throughout the entire process he was very good at explaining what was going on, in terms I could understand. He also explained possible risks and downsides, being careful not to sugar-coat the fact that all surgery has risks, and that not all surgery is ultimately successful. I was fortunate in that Tia's surgery and recovery went very well, and that result is a testament to Dr. Munjar's "mad skillz". I should also note the rest of the staff at VSCP was excellent as well. The office is clearly well-organized and efficient, and all of the staff members I encountered were always friendly and helpful. You can tell they enjoy what they do and have a great love of the animals they service. I should have paid more attention to the bad google reviews..... We had a puppy with an elbow dysplasia diagnosis. We felt pressured to get surgery the same day as the consult. ("The longer you wait the more damage is happening"). We were not told in much detail what the recovery and rehab were going to be like. After the surgery her meds were not managed correctly. (Even though we were calling constantly). They would not change her sedative meds at all so the screw that was put in came loose, because she wasn't properly sedated. This required a 2nd surgery to remove the screw and the bone it was supposed to fuse. (We were not charged for the 2nd surgery.) We were told she could live a normal life without the bone that was removed. We were told that 2 weeks after the staples came out she'd be back to normal. The staples came out 2 months ago. We have since seen 3 rehab vets who all said that she will need PT and rehab the rest of her life most likely and that she may never be able to be off leash again. We were not properly educated on what the recovery was actually going to be like and the recovery has been one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do in my life. After the surgery the calls were rarely returned. This has just been awful. If you look at the negative Google reviews you'll find some similar stories to mine. We've spent 10k on a pup we've only had 8 months and are just heart broken at how things have turned out. read more

We were so pleased with our entire experience with VSCP, from start to finish - a process of 6 months and counting! Our veterinarian referred us to VCSP in July 2014 when our Newfoundland, Murphy, began limping severely. We suspected a torn cruciate ligament, and wanted to get an expert opinion. When I first called to make an appointment, the receptionist was very professional and helpful. They were able to get us in right away for a consultation with Dr. Amelia Simpson, who confirmed that our suspicion was correct AND that the problem existed in both knees. She recommended a TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Ostomy) surgery for both knees. Since Murphy is a very large dog, we would need to stagger the surgeries, 6-8 weeks apart. We scheduled her first surgery, and dropped her off early that morning. I was a nervous wreck, but Dr. Simpson called me as soon as she finished the surgery to let me know that it had gone perfectly. She called me again that afternoon to let me know that Murphy was still doing great! She also let me know that I was welcome to call back any time for an update. Murphy spent the night so that she could be monitored for a little while before we brought her home. The second surgery went just as the first. Recovery was difficult for the first couple of weeks after each surgery, as we expected, but any time we had a question or concern, which was fairly often right at the beginning, Dr. Simpson responded promptly. We had no idea what to expect re what was an appropriate amount of pain/depression, and Dr. Simpson was great at letting us know what was in the range of "normal for this amount of time after surgery." I continue to check in with Dr. Simpson every once in a while, just to make sure whatever activity is appropriate for Murphy (snowshoeing, agility, etc) and she is quick to respond. This could have been a negative/stressful experience, but all of our dealings with VCSP were top-notch. We appreciated the professionalism, kindness, ease of scheduling, responsiveness . . . . everything. To top it off, Murphy can't wait to get out of the car when we arrive for follow up appointments. She dances around in the car when she can tell we're getting close, then cries, then bolts to the front door of the facility as soon as we open the car door for her. She had major surgery there twice, and she can't wait to go back in to see everyone! read more

At 8 weeks they were supposed to call and give instructions on what to do next as far as rehabilitation for my dog after double knee surgery. It is now 9 weeks and I am still waiting on that call. I will NEVER take my pet or any other future pet after all the lying and bs. Once they have your money they don't care. The check ups which I was told are part of the original cost aren't check ups. It is a call asking you how your pet is. What, I am not a vet I can't tell. Now I have to do your job for you. This team has been truly amazing all around from the first phone call to set up an appointment to picking up my Dogger after her surgery to follow up after. Everyone I have talked to has been very nice and answered all of my questions. She had a TPLO done on both back legs. When I spoke to Dr. Cioffi after the consult appointment she spent quite a while on the phone going over things with me and answering all of my questions and again after the surgery. They gave great after care/at home instructions verbally and in the go home bag packet so I was able to refer back to it several times (since a dog after surgery is kind of like having a newborn at home again! :D ) and I have reached out a couple of times since with additional questions and I always get an answer back within a few hours. Dr. Munjar is amazing! Our 6-month old puppy broke the growth plate in her hip the night before Thanksgiving. All the regular vets were closed and the emergency vet we contacted gave us pain meds and said this wasn't an emergency and we would have to wait until Monday (over 4 days). This was devastating as our dog was wailing in pain. Wailing. My mother had used Dr. Munjar for a well done hip dysplasia surgery for her dog and he had given her his cell phone number in case of emergencies. On the off chance he would answer, she called to ask for advice. He then offered to give up his vacation time to come in ON Thanksgiving to do surgery. Dr. Munjar did a fantastic job. It has been over 6 months and our dog continues to be healthy and growing well. We couldn't be more grateful. read more

However, the attention from the front desk person, the vet tech and the examination I received from Dr. Lauer was very thorough and done with care. I came here for a second opinion on a surgical consult and boy, am I glad I did. Not only did Dr. Lauer conduct a very thorough examination of my dog, she did not immediately jump to a recommendation for a costly surgery like the first vet I saw. Her diagnosis was actually quite different from the first diagnosis, but I trust her judgment since she took the time to really examine my dog and his whole body. When my year old pup first started limping, I thought nothing of it, assuming that with time she would recover on her own. But after a few months, I knew that something wasn't right. Our regular vet referred us to Dr. Munjar to have her shoulder checked out. The front desk staff were quick to get us in and so kind. Dr. Munjar examined her and her x-rays and gave us a few options - allowing us to go with the least invasive route to start. He was patient and thorough with all of my questions about her pain med prescriptions and the level of rest she would need. In the end, the procedure went perfectly and by following his instructions (which weren't always easy with such a high-energy breed) she was able to make a full recovery with just one cortisol shot and a lot of down time. If she were ever to be injured again, I would not hesitate to bring her back to Dr. Munjar for care. He is kind, gentle and communicates openly and clearly about the medical problems and all of the potential solutions. read more

This veterinary practice is all about the money! They charged me $115.00 prior to my appointment, which was non refundable. Then at the appointment I was charged an additional $452.00 for a prescription for a sedative and a CBC blood test! The surgery was set up for 2 weeks later with a price range of between $2962.61 to 3591.74! Mind you this surgery is to remove a 1 inch mast cell tumor on the abdomen! I received a call from my veterinarian who had a cancellation and could now do the surgery a week sooner than Vet Surg of PDX and for $1446.86 in full. I called to ask for a refund of part of the $452.00 and I was told NO as I was inside the 2 week cancellation period! I was actually within by 1 day! I think this place should only be used in an emergency and if you have lots of money!! I informed them I was living on a retirement income but they don't care because they are all about the money!!! Taking advantage of people at a vulnerable time when your animal needs care!! read more

I highly recommend Dr. Amelia Simpson and her staff for surgical and veterinarian care. She did surgery to remove a tumor on my 13-year-old dog Joey's lower lip. Beautiful surgical job! Healed quickly. Dr. Simpson clearly explained our options and the estimated costs. She gave him a thorough checkup including chest x-ray prior to surgery so there would be no problems. He was kept overnight for observation - they have someone there 24 hours - and we were able to call to check on him several times through the night. The staff was patient and supportive monitoring Joey's progress post surgery. They are attentive and personable, and we are VERY satisfied. Dr. Simpson personally followed up and explained the biopsy results. This is the second time she has done specialized surgery on our dog. Run fast and far away from this vet. She is rude and does exactly what is asked not to do even when told repeatedly that it will cause your pet to become very upset. She doesn't care if your pet is afraid, uncomfortable, whatever, only if SHE is uncomfortable. She also doesn't care if you disagree with her and that's a problem b/c she has a nasty attitude if you ain't perfect (in her image of perfection). Worst yet, she will promise you things just to get you in and doing what she wants, then as soon as you do, she'll change her mind and tell you TOO BAD, that's what I'm gonna do. That's what happened to me and it was traumatic AH. And there's nothing you can do about it b/c now she has your pet. Unless you have a perfect pet and you yourself are the perfect vet-client, there's a good chance you will regret taking your pet to her. read more

I think the staff did wonderful things with my beloved pet,a dog. He has healed very well after having a cancerous tumor removed and a skin graft to replace what was removed in a sensitive area. I am 100% pleased with the service! My only concern is that follow up visits were included in the cost of the operation, but the cost of the bandaging was not. The bandage cost were not insignificant. Just clarify what is and what is not included in the costs as you consider the various services. read more

From the Surgeon Dr Levque, her tech Lindsey and the office staff Carlie and Emily. I came across this clinic when we had gone to the closest emergency vet to us. While sitting in their lobby, panicking, trying to research top surgical vets in Portland, I found Veterinary surgical center of Portland had amazing reviews. I called them and they were able to get our sweet baby girl seen and in surgery within hours. Not only were they able to accommodate us so quickly, their love and compassion for our puppy (and us) exceeded all expectations. The doctor gave us options, and when giving us her recommendation I knew it was honest. Our pup was there over night, while recovering from surgery and not only did they make me feel so comfortable every single time I called to check in on her during the night, but they sent me text pictures and updates too! I could go on and on, but trust me when I say that if you're in the position I was, frantically trying to find the best care for your hurt little baby, give them a call. We were referred here by our regular vet for airway surgery and neuter for our pug puppy. We met with Dr. Simpson during our consult, and she was absolutely wonderful--knowledgeable, kind, and answered all of our questions and addressed all of our concerns. She was not aggressive about surgery, but rather assured us that she would only do what was absolutely needed for our dog's health. She was able to book us the next week. We felt so comfortable dropping him off, as the staff was friendly, capable, and very communicative. We were updated when he came out of surgery and were told to call whenever we liked to check in on him, as he had to stay overnight. The next day when we picked him up, we were given thorough and clear aftercare instructions, and assured that the staff would be available to answer our calls should be have any questions or concerns (which we did!). The surgery cost came in just above the lowest end of the estimate we were given, which we were very happy about. Our dog has recovered beautifully and we are so grateful for the excellent care he received at VSCP. We, of course, hope he doesn't have any more surgical needs in his future, but if he does, we will definitely go back to VSCP and Dr. Simpson! read more

Do not bring your dog here. They did surgery on my dogs elbows when she had a fever. And they did a double elbow displaysia surgery on my Bernese mountain dog puppy which hey scared us into thinking they had to do right away. The first time my dog was sick or had issues they brushes us off and told us to go to our local vet. They surgery didn't go well. They continued to make us do 2 other surgerys. My dog got MRSA from this clinic which I think if from not being clean. I spent close to $10,000 and my dog still has two broken ulnas that never healed. The final time they put plates i. And my dog still had an infection they brushed us off again and only removed one plate. We were fed up! And went to another doctor. He said if we hadn't removed the plate that day my dog could have died. And the second doctor said that the double surgery my dog got is a very old school surgery. Then they had the never and call to ask if "he" is ok. My local vet said we should have never gone here. My poor dog will one day need a double elbow replacement. She's on constant medication and physical therapy. She's 4 and can barely walk 10 minutes. She would have been better off with the elbow dysplasia. Get a second opinion. Do not do elbow dysplasia surgery here!!! I feel like atleast they should have refunded us everything. And they didn't. Do not come here. Bad surgerys. Very expensive. Bad follow up care. read more

Can't say enough good things about Dr. Simpson. Saw her yesterday with my little old pug with a collapsed trachea. Hoping for one last possible option to help her, but in the end we decided against doing anything surgical. Both Dr. Munjar and Dr. Simpson have performed complicated operations on one of my cats. Although an indoor cat, he is accident prone, and broke a front leg in 2009 and then tore a ligament in a hide leg in 2010. They were fantastic! I highly recommend them! The surgery Dr. Munjar performed on the broken leg was truly remarkable. Look at him today, and you would never know that he had these injuries. read more
