The basketball court is a two basket style that has been maintained in good shape. The playground is compact and rests on a soft mulch base where the equipment doesn't rise very far off the ground, so even a fall won't hurt them. Nice park with a great location. This park…read morehas a one way loop that runs through the park, so you enter on the northern side of the park and exit from the south. The north end has an extensive shaded playground for big kids. You'll find lots of pieces of equipment in close proximity to each other. There is also a shelter, a basketball court, and a smaller kid's playground that is fenced to keep the kids from running out into the road. In the center of the park is a baseball field, a shelter, and a second smaller playground. Parking is most available in the center part. The south of the park extends back passed a picnic area and some less visitor activity portions of the park. Apparently the park extends to the river, but I didn't see any paths, especially for vehicles, to take there. A solid addition to the city's park system. Review #2760

The 16.5 acre site (think 4 blocks) is still being developed, but is off to a great start. There is a paved trail that will be part of a larger trail system in Monticello. Along the trail on the north side of the park is an observation and picnic area that overlooks a meadow/prairie. Lots of wildflowers make for a beautiful view in season. The park has many foot trails that are wide with little elevation change that make for an easy walk. My only negative is that the foundation material is quite chalky and quickly makes your shoes all dusty. I hope they can find something a little better for visitors in the future. There is a wooded section of the park, a rain garden, a butterfly garden, and an amphitheater built into the side of the hill. There is talk of a nature center being added if funds allow. Parking is easy and requires very little effort to get to the trails. The park looks especially nice when the wildflowers are blooming. I haven't visited in the other seasons to see how it transforms. This is a great addition to the parks system of Monticello. I could see this becoming a place for taking walks or taking a book and sitting out on the observation deck. Review #2759

The shared space of the Voight Park and Softball Complex and the Monticello City Pool has a nice…read morevariety of things for visitors to do. The entrance is on the north side of the complex where 2nd St extends south of Ohio St. There is a basketball court on the north side of the parking lot while the pool, playground, and softball fields are to the south. The pool is closest to the parking area and you enter through the building to get to the fenced in pool. Not a lot of slides or fun extras here, but the pool is a decent size and has life guards on duty during their open hours. To the east of the pool is the softball complex where multiple fields are nestled together with lights and most of the features you expect. To the south (you have to walk to here) are the playground, a shelter, a beach volleyball court, and a workout station. Sorry if you have to haul a lot of food to the shelter....no vehicles allowed. But the shelter and most of the equipment looked in good condition. The workout area needed some weeding to bring it up to par, but otherwise seemed functional. Lots to do and fairly well maintained, this park is a place to check out for some low cost fun in Monticello. Review #2758

One thing I really like about exploring towns in central Indiana is when I discover a memorial to…read morethe history of the area, especially when it was something that I somewhat recall or have a connection with. Back on April 3, 1974, the Midwest was hit with a "Super Outbreak" that generated 148 confirmed tornadoes over a two day period across 13 states. 5000 were injured and 315 deaths were confirmed. Monticello was the target of an F4 tornado that swept in from the southwest, killing eight people. There was an estimated $100 million in damages, including the court house. The tornado struck the town at 5:17 p.m. It is considered (locally) as when "time stood still". In 2010, a new park was created a block west of where the new court house stands. The bricked plaza features several special items. A sculpture shaped like a tornado supports a clock that is stopped at 5:17. There are some pieces from the court house that were saved and put in this park. The original water fountain and several of the lamp posts were saved and used in this plaza. (Note: The keystone from the original court house sits a block to the west on the corner of Constitution Plaza by the new court house.) This plaza creates a quiet space in the downtown area that succinctly tells the story of what happened by use of plaques that are located around the plaza. I admire that the town pays tribute to its challenges and has continued forward rebuilding as a community. Review #2794

I only saw baseball fields during my visit, so I'm not sure it quite lives up to its title. There is a shelter on the north end of the park and a playground on the northeast side. The playground has a couple large pieces of climbing/slide equipment that seemed in pretty good shape. The parking was plentiful for access to the facilities. It's an okay park, but for a short drive, there are better ones not too far from town. Review #2763

When the former White County Court House was destroyed by the horrific tornado of 1974, the county…read morehad the opportunity to rebuild. Not only did they make a new court house, but they also added Constitution Plaza. The plaza has a bit of everything: a Veteran's memorial section in the south east corner; the keystone sculpture from the previous court house; a new pavilion for outdoor events; and a new sculpture on the north east corner. The plaza is brick lined and looks great! The scale is smaller in keeping with the reduced size of the court house. It all seems to work because it was planned that way. The statue of Colonel Isaac White was added in 2015. The statue was created by artists Stephen Maxon and Doris Park who made the life sized bronze. White is the namesake of the county and there is a dedication plaque that tells his story. Very nice plaza for the heart of downtown. Review #2753
