The campground was full when I went in today, possibly with end of summer and Labor Day weekend. The signage was pretty clear and there was plenty of directions. I hiked trails 2 and the loop, small trail in terms of width but well maintained. Lots of flies and bugs but that's to do with the weather though it was beautiful today. There's an entry fee although I didn't pay as I had my state park pass.

Staff (hosts, in particular) couldn't have been much more deplorable to us about it. We understand the policy, but there's a common decency to enforcing it in one's volunteer role (wearing a DNR hat). We're not loud. We respect other people, nature, and the place. Yet, there's 40' pushers with a jeep and 2 motorcycles who apparently don't have to abide by the same rules. When our guests did leave, the hosts thanked them for leaving loudly as they drove by. The campground was more than half empty, mind you. Sadly, we will think twice about returning if there are other options. If management values people coming here to camp on their vacation time, a close inspection of customer service might be a great way to approach that goal.

There is limited parking which could be a problem if all the fields are in use at the same time. The playground has lots of pieces for kids to enjoy and there is shade covering some of the equipment, while others are near enough for kids to take a break if they need to. As frequently seen on larger parks, maintenance of lawn and mulch areas could be weeded more often. The park seemed to be clean. Overall, a nice park for organized games or for leisurely play. When I arrived at the park, I was surprised that there was so much to look at. It's not like most…read moreparks. This one has a pioneer village with log cabins, a museum (which was closed for a private event during my visit), and canal boat rides. The village is open to walk through and includes the Case Reed House which was moved from downtown to this site around 1986. The house was converted to a hotel for travelers after being a private residence. The canal boats are colorful and provide guided tours for those who wish to take the trip. I didn't have time to go on the ride, so I can't say how much it costs or how often the rides leave the dock. There is also a trail that runs through the park along the canal. This is a nice piece of local history from an era when Indiana thought it could be a navigable transportation area with the help of canals. Review #2792

The roads are a little confusing if some of them are one way or not. The waterfall area is quiet and pretty. They had some picnic tables. There was a staircase to view it closer and the stairs were a little sketchy. The beach area was pretty wide and we found space. They have a little snack area and a dive center. They also have an inflatable obstacle course for purchase. The restrooms were messy and smelled. The beach was clean and they had trash cans. The quarry water was clear and the water was nice. They have primitive camp sites and electrical sites. We saw that most of the electrical sites seem to have full time residents there. Overall it's a great spot to check out and relax at.

Looking at the pictures from a few years back, I had high expectations for this park. But things…read morehave changed. First, there is no assigned parking for visitors. I thought there was a gravel lot on site, but the curb at the edge of the road is not designed to access it. The row of trees that the previous review mentioned seems to be gone. Now the playground is in full sun and the picnic table has been moved. The base for the playground is sprouting weeds and shows a lack of attention to the park. What happened? I was able to street park across the road since no parking is allowed along the park. There is a basketball court with two of the three backboards having rims attached. The swings, rocker, and slide fort seem to have held up pretty well, but the trash container had either been tipped over or was full and needed to be removed. It just wasn't nearly as inviting as it appeared in the earlier pictures. The lack of shade hindered anyone from the area using the park even though it was a warm and sunny day. This park looked great in early photos, but failed to live up to my expectations. Review #2740

There are also very nice swings and a basketball court. There are several seats for moms, dads and babysitters to sit while the kids play. Recently a picnic table was added under the maple trees which separate South Street Park from the Heart Walk Park. The picnic table was donated by the Apple Popcorn Festival Committee in 2012. In easy walking distance from most of Brookston's residential areas, there is also ample parking in the park or along Wood Street. The Heart park may also be entered via Wood Street Park.
