This place had me at Fresh baked bread! From the outside it is easy to miss this place on this busy street but there is more than meets the eye at this Mom & Pop shop. We ordered the turkey sandwich and the meatball sandwich, both of these sandwiches were fresh and made from scratch. We enjoyed the sandwiches prepared here they were very good! Street parking is available, I don't know if there are other places to park I didn't look. The menu has depth here, salads, hot and cold sandwiches, desserts and drinks in containers are available. I did not see fountain drinks as an option. The sandwiches are huge here, one is enough to feed two adults or have leftovers for the next day, which we did and they were still tasty. Inside you order from the counter and they call your order when it's ready. There are plenty of seats inside near the counter. The other side of this place are more tables for groups. My boyfriend and I came in to get lunch and they had a pretty good list of sandwiches! I ordered the Caprese and he got the Baja Philly Boy and both were delicious. The service was also pretty quick and you can see them making the sandwiches fresh behind the counter which I liked. The bread was fluffy, and all the ingredients tasted fresh. I'm shocked this place has as high of a rating as it does. I decided to check this spot out bc it was close to my office and I wanted to try something different from the usual spot. I got a Mamma Mia which is listed under the cold sandwich section which explicitly states all cold sandwiches come with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo and mustard and decided to add turkey for $3.50. This was the most pathetic sandwich I've ever received. Basically bread with a few veggies on it and the smallest strip of meat that was basically falling out of the bread. None of the items listed under cold sandwiches, lettuce, tomato, mayo, etc... were added (which is disappointing since that's what I look forward to in a sando) leading to the driest sandwich I've ever gotten. Additionally, once my sandwich had already been made and was being wrapped, the gal making it decided to let me know that they were out of goat cheese and decided to use provolone as a substitute... at any point before handing it over to me, you could've let me know so I could decide if I wanted a different sandwich or at minimum pick a replacement cheese out. I'm not the kind of person to ask someone to remake this now that it's already made so I decided to not say anything and hope the rest of the sandwich would be good enough to make up for it. My mistake. On top of this being a giant hunk of bread, none of the filling was sufficiently proportioned and I really just feel like for a nearly $20 sandwich there is no way anyone should be getting this when you can get a SIGNIFICANTLY better sandwich just down the street at cheeba hut. In the end I wound up with a plate full of excess, dry bread I ripped off and little to no satiation. I'd say this is one of the best sandwich shops in San Diego - the bread is the best, always freshly baked and fluffy. It's as long as finger tips to my elbow. I think we will have left over to bring home and enjoy the next day. It comes with mamas love juice, which I hope they would do bigger containers of for to go in the future. Small shop with minimal seating but it's more of a grab and go place. We are bringing ours to the beach! Got two bags of chips with our sandwiches it came out to be around $36 I believe. Then we ordered one of the San Pellegrino Lemonata and that was ~$3. Sandwiches ordered, lots of bread & nice and soft- all sandwiches come with mayo, mustard, lettuce, thinly sliced onions, and tomatoes. You can specify if you want everything or what you don't want added. - SoHo: Turkey, genoa salami, swiss cheese, tomato & Dijon mustard. This sandwich is delicious with the thinly sliced onions. I liked that they used dijon mustard specifically for this! The Genoa salami was so tasty. - BMH: Capicola, ham, and provolone cheese. This is a basic (aka classic) sandwich for those that don't want to adventure too far from a ham sandwich lunch. It came with an abundance of lettuce. Tastes so good with the mamas love juice dressing! - Southside: Ham, Cotto & Genoa Salami, capicola, Provolone w/ the choice of mild or hot giardiniera. I ordered to have mine with mild giardiniera-- this is an Italian relish! Wish there was more of this throughout the sandwich. Wonderful hidden gem in La Mesa. On this particular day, I was craving a sandwich and decided to google places and landed on this one. I'm so glad I did. I ordered the Tuscany with just mortadella. Huge sandwich with all the fixings and a great Italian dressing on the side to add. Staff is so friendly and the owner is extremely charming and wants his customers to be happy, that's hard to find these days. Didn't think it was going to be good bc it only came with pesto, mozerllacheese, and tomato and dressing. It was AMAZING !!!! Gave half to my buddy and he enjoyed it. Great little sandwich place! The order was a Southside with spicy giardiniera spread. The meat was amazing (imported from italy) and those spicy peppers were the star of the sandwhich. The aize of the sandwich was massive! The bread was a little bready (not as soft inside as I had hoped). The owner is super friendly and gave me some free frozen bread. I ended up turning that into croutons for salads throughout the week. Parking isn't fantastic when they are busy. If it wasn't so far from my place I would definitely be a regular! It was my first time being to BMH Italian. My husband has been there before, so he recommended we go there to grab sandwiches for dinner. I ordered a torpedo sandwich with no onions, and my husband ordered a meatball sub. We both got a cannot also. There was a nice lady who greeted us,I believe her name was Tina. She took our order and she also made our sandwiches too. The shop is going through a renovation and now has a new owner than previously. They did buy the family's recipes and kept the name. The price was great and the food was delicious. The only thing I would say is that once I got home, I realized they left the onions on my sandwich when I asked for no onions. I guess the lowest grade I can give this place is 1 star; they definitely don't deserve it. I got an Italian sandwich from this place. I asked the lady if it had pepperoncinis, and she said for $1.00, I could have a side, which I opted for. When I looked at the sandwich, it had one piece of ham, one piece of salami, one more slice of another Italian meat, and one slice of provolone. When I questioned the skimpy sandwich, the rude lady said to me, "We have been here since 1960, and that's how we make our sandwiches." I replied by saying, "That's not a lot of meat, unlike other Italian delis." As I asked for my money back, I mentioned to her that I was going to place a review on Yelp. She said to me, "I'm going to put a review on you." LOL. I think she fails to recognize that it's not 1960; a lot has changed in 64 years, and people expect more than a skimpy sandwich. We ordered 2 sandwiches and received mostly bread, no topping besides lettuce. I also ordered an antipasto salad that was mostly lettuce with awful old marinated vegetables. And the staff is very friendly - though short due to recovery from the pandemic. We just walked in for our orders. But you can call ahead. It was barely warm as was the soup, which almost got sent back to heat up but I didn't want the soup heated in the plastic in the microwave, so I skipped it. It was home-made and tasted good.
