Great service from our host Nikki and great food. I like that they offer your choice of pasta to be paired with your choice of sauce and protein. I definitely want to go back to try the options out but my halibut was great. The atmosphere was friendly and there were a lot of regulars being greeted as they walked in. Obviously the place is a fan favorite. There's a good amount of parking and it's very easy to get to.

Flourless chocolate cake

The service here was outstanding - the gentleman who served us was very friendly and attentive! This is a nice little mom and pop type establishment and I wish we would have enjoyed the food more. The texture of the homemade pasta was amazing but the sauce didn't quite hit the mark for me. My husband felt the same about his dish. I tried the super Alfredo and my husband had the pantera Rosa sauce. Both were very mild in flavor - I felt like I needed to add cheese and salt and pepper to mine to avoid just having the pasta taste like cream. The shrimp also had a strange flavor to them that felt like they didn't quite pair well with the sauce. It's possible the red sauce here could be much better? We got the flourless chocolate cake for dessert and the texture was incredibly grainy. Probably wouldn't order it again. Overall disappointed in the food quality.

Who doesn't love hand made pasta! This is a great spot for old school Italian cuisine. If your a first timer you must try their Lasagna which is layered Bolognese, parmigiano and bechamel. Great flavor with an amazing presentation. They also have other great options such as their Pollo al Limone which is organic chicken, lemon & capers over small salad. The staff is on point as they always are helpful with any questions or suggestions.

Came here on a recommendation for great Italian food, and was not disappointed. The interior is on the smaller side and because the food is so great, it tends to fill quickly and have a wait for a table outside. Reservations recommended if you have a larger party and can snag the time you're looking for. Started with a cold artichoke appetizer which was nice but not overly exceptional. I was hoping for a hot version instead with a bit of char for texture, but their version was nice. The mains however were terrific. My chicken+mushroom combo came with a mushroom-flavored cream/garlic sauce which was just great. The others had spinach bolognese and gnocchi and grilled onion/sausage in a creamy garlic crème sauce. Portion size is great-- high marks for giving enough pasta that you're not leaving hungry, but not too much that you feel bloated. The cannoli desert was passable. I've had much better cannoli elsewhere... this checked the box but wasn't spectacular. The biggest issue I had were, strangely, the lacquered concrete floors. For such a small space, everyone was talking quite loudly, and there is no carpet or rugs to soak up the sound, so it was tiring after a while to constantly ask everyone at the table to repeat what they just said. A little more acoustic suppression in the front of house would have gone a long way to making a more pleasant environment.

Appetizer - Bruschetta on piadina (Italian flatbread)

I made it back to Cucina Basilico just over 2 1/2 years later - this time for dinner - and although I still enjoy the restaurant, I have a few new insights to add that explain why I am removing a star and will probably just stick to it for lunch. Appetizers: We started with oil and vinegar being served, and once we ordered our meals, then bread was brought. Maybe this is because they don't charge you like some other restaurants but they want to ensure you're staying to eat? We ordered the caprese salad to split - there were no fresh basil leaves in it, but there was a pesto sauce dripped across the tomato and mozzarella. Entrees: I had pasta again as I can't resist homemade pastas when they show you the ones they've made for the day! I went with a spinach pasta topped their marinara sauce and added some sausage. The pasta was on the thicker side but I loved how the sausage was cut in thin slices rather than the typical round chunks that most restaurants serve. Their marinara was on the thinner side, which is my preference! My friend who is watching her sugars opted to stay away from the pasta and instead ordered the salmon with green beans - unfortunately she said it was a bit dry. My other friend who is vegetarian ordered the aglio e olio and also thought the pasta was a bit thick (we ordered the same funky shaped pasta), but said it was delicious. So all the dietary needs were met! Desserts: I enjoyed the "cannolo" siciliano...most people say "cannoli" but that is the plural and they only serve you one - so there's your Italian lesson for the day! It was a nice ending to the meal, but honestly I was so full I brought half of it home! My friends enjoyed the flourless chocolate and almond cake. Drinks: When dining at an Italian restaurant, my go-to is prosecco and I liked that they gave me a little bottle rather than just a glass. My friends ordered sangiovese and cabernet wine. The only bummer was I thought I would finish with a limoncello shot, but they do not have a license to serve hard liquor. They said they chose just to get the beer and wine license due to the expense, which I can respect given how hard it is for restaurants to survive with the high cost of doing business in San Diego. Also, regarding the drinks - two of us ended the meal with a cup of tea and I couldn't decide which flavor I wanted, so I grabbed two tea bags. I thought they charged by the teacups with hot water that are brought to the table, but our receipt showed three tea charges at $3 each, so I guess they charge by the tea bag. Next time I'll make up my mind and grab just one! There are mixed feelings on the service - in some ways they were on top of things like when I was looking around because I needed a spoon for my tea, a woman at the counter immediately came over because she saw I was looking for something. But then I asked for an extra napkin and never got it. My friends got to the restaurant before I did and they felt like the service was a bit spotty. Another food note - I didn't see any pizza on their menu, so if you're looking for that, you'll need to find another place. But I think it makes sense that they don't try to offer everything to everybody given the small size of the restaurant because it allows them to run an efficient kitchen. Our meals were served on a timely basis, everything was hot and at least the pasta dishes were delicious. Lastly, we split the check three ways and all paid by credit card. We were not advised that they add a 3% surcharge for paying by card - so we didn't even have the option of paying by cash if we had wanted to avoid the extra cost, so cardholder payers beware! Overall, I still enjoyed the restaurant, but I don't think I would return for dinner again. And because of the inconsistent service, dry salmon and extra charges, I am removing one star. I feel to truly earn five stars you have to be great for both lunch AND dinner, and not have anything occur that has you second guessing your experience. I might return for lunch if I were in the area, but I have some other favorite spots in San Diego that I would go to for dinner where I know I can end my meal with a limoncello! Remember that they are a smaller restaurant in a shopping strip, so you can have a great experience if you set your expectations accordingly.

The homemade pasta is delicious! We arrived on a Friday night and it was busy but we were able to get seated quickly. The flavor for the Norcina was perfect. The sausage and the added mushrooms blended well with the light cream sauce. The lemon chicken was good too.

Stephanie B.

Delicious fresh pasta! Lots of variety in sauces. The service was great and the ambiance was relaxing.

Janet R.

Great italian food and wonderful service! Everyone here is incredibly nice and attentive to what everyone needs and wants. The sauces are incredible and you can't go wrong with what you choose. I highly suggest getting the sausage if you can add it, it's a great addition and tastes great!

Lindsay C.

Oh my goodness is this place amazing. I've been here a few times and all times I've gotten lucky enough to be seated right away. This little spot is so busy but so intimate and quite the hole in the wall. The homemade pasta is always amazing. The bread and meatball sides were perfect and I had a hard time not filling up before my entree. I can't wait to come back!

Burrata

We had a wonderful experience here. It's in an unassuming location (outdoor mall) but once you're inside the vibe is so cozy and cute! It's not that big of a place and we didn't have reservations, but we were seated right away at one of the high top tables (6pm on a Wednesday). The hostess was very sweet. They import their pastas from Italy which is amazing. Our waiter (who was also Italian) was helpful and friendly, and also had a nice sense of humor! We had a lot of questions and restrictions (GF, DF, etc) and he was patient and helpful. Service was great and fast in general. We got bread with evoo+vinaigrette dip brought to the table first, and it was so good! We ordered two appetizers - the burrata and the artichokes, both were delicious. For my entree I got the pesto with GF pasta and added chicken for protein, delicious! My friends loved their pastas as well (marinara and fettuccini). We got two desserts to finish - the flourless cake and the semifreddo malaga. Both delicious and a great way to end the meal. I didn't have that heavy feeling I get after eating pasta or Italian food at many other places! It was all a really nice authentic Italian experience. The price was super reasonable too given the quality and everything we ordered. We'll be back for sure!

What a hidden gem! Was looking a Italian restaurant that we haven't gone to and this one unexpectedly popped up. Make reservations as it is a smaller and very popular! The service was great, the food was delicious, I loved the daily pasta options that are made in house. It felt like being in Italy! Located in a strip mall so parking is relatively easy.

Restaurants and bars filled to the brim. Lack of street parking availability. With that being said, after circling around for a while, I found a free parking spot on the street five minutes away by foot. Ambiance (4/5): While Bencotto has a nice interior, I went with some al fresco dining on their front patio. There are 20 or so seats available right off the street, so it's not a large patio by any means, but it's nice. The weather was a little chilly by San Diego standards, so they had some heaters out there. It always reminds me of Europe when I'm dining al fresco. Service (3/5): A little slow at times, but overall, pretty good. My waiter was friendly, he just could have stopped by a little quicker. Still solid though. Drinks (4/5): They have a nice selection of wine. I ended up rolling with an Italian beer I had never had before instead. It was a lager and they served it with a chilled glass which is always a nice touch. Food (4/5): The reason I came delivered. Their most popular entree is pasta cooked in a cheese wheel. The pasta is in a creamy truffle sauce with mushrooms. No protein but you can add some for an additional charge. I added grilled chicken. What's awesome about this dish is that they cook it for you inside by the hostess stand. So you can go there and see it happening. My server didn't give me a heads-up (shame on him) but luckily, someone at a table close to me did after me, so I joined to see their food being prepared. I also ordered the gnocco frito which is puffy fried bread. You get four pieces and I had never had this type of Italian bread. Not amazing, but it complemented the pasta well. All of their pasta is made in house and you can taste the difference. The cheese wheel pasta was absolutely delicious. I was pumped to cross this bucket list item off my list.
