This was my first time at this particular Boba Guys location and it was mainly because our 8:30p reservation across the way at Millennium was running 20 mins late.... Nevertheless, at least this place was warm inside granted they had no seating areas, but I bet that's due to the unwanted types of people around the areas passing through.... We ordered on an iPad, which I thought was weird because I like human interactions, but I guess everyone company wants to make budget cuts to extra humans being employed. My boyfriend wanted some spicy chips, but I didn't see a button on the kiosk to order them, as as the barista came from the back to drop off our drinks at the countertop, he was able to pay for the chips with the baristas register. They shut down RIGHT at 9p, so we left and within minutes, the baristas had everything a lockdown tight! Haha I was rather impressed with how fast they got everything cleaned and prepped. Be aware that they use lactose milk so if you can't stomach that in your lattes, you'll need to pay extra to sub in a non-dairy milk. On this visit I ordered the mango matcha iced latte with boba and almond milk. It was a refreshing and quality drink on a hot and sunny day. I've been a fan of Boba Guys for many years, often seeking them out even if it's not conveniently located to me. Before they opened in Oakland, we used to drive to San Ramon for Boba Guys and it never disappointed. Over the years, this has started to feel run down. Took a picture of the waiting bench and attached to this review. I truly hope it doesn't go out of business because I'm a fan of the company, but it's so dirty and feels bare. This is my go to stop for some boba when I'm leaving the bay. Street parking is always tough to find but they have a parking lot in the back. It's currently under construction so there's only a few spots. My go to drink is the strawberry Fresca with almond jelly and unfortunately they were all out of almond jelly this day. The workers were super sweet and said it was being made, but hadn't set yet. They offered a replacement topping and came to find out they have new toppings! Edible mochi and grass jelly. I got the grass jelly as the edible mochi was a bit too slimy/chewy for me and it complimented the drink really well. Pretty similar in texture to almond jelly but with a different flavor. I still think almond jelly goes best with the strawberry Fresca, but if they ever run out again (which I never hope they do) I'll be getting grass jelly. read more

Another success story. Our daughter took us here and we ordered at her suggestion, and everything was better than it looked. And that would be hard to do because it all looked so amazing. The place was clean. It was easy to navigate the menu and plenty of selections I've made sure I tried some of those spicy Chinese peanuts that they had up on the rack on the counter and that was a nice first for me. Boba Guys provides decent Boba although it is pretty high priced. For a Horchata and a Korean Banana Milk both with Boba, each were $8. What stood out immediately from each drink was that the flavors were good but also lacking. Even at 100% sweetness, each drink felt like they lacked that extra kick that would cause me to crave even more. Both were solid but could've been even better. Aside from that, the service was fine, nothing out of the ordinary. The atmosphere of the place was also pretty chill. For those in the loyalty program, I'm a Boba Lover so I would like to think I know my boba. It makes no sense to me to open at 11 but say that boba isn't ready until 11:30 because it takes an hour to make...and you are a BOBA tea shop. After being lured in by Boba Guys' premium pricing and branding (actually, it just happened to be that RareTea down the street was closed), I expected at least functional customer service and a decent product. What I got was $23 worth of hard, undercooked boba and cloying, unimpressive drinks (for two beverages)--not to mention a corporate runaround that would make Kafka proud. I ordered through Boba Guys' own website, only to discover they've offloaded the entire ordering experience to DoorDash. So when the product was subpar, both companies pointed fingers at each other like kids caught breaking a vase. I spent over two weeks emailing back and forth with both Boba Guys and DoorDash, just trying to get a refund for drinks that never should have been served. The final outcome? Absolutely nothing. Boba Guys shrugged and said "we care so much about you but can't do anything, so try contacting DoorDash again," while DoorDash first promised a refund and then when I followed up offered an unfounded denial. Boba Guys could have taken ownership and credited me directly, but chose instead to hide behind their third-party partner. So much for integrity. This was my ave my wife's first order and will be our last. RareTea down the street serves vastly better drinks at half the price, and they don't treat customers like an inconvenience. read more

Stopped by on the way back from a hot weekend at Mount Lassen and decided to choose from their new seasonal menu! I ordered the Matcha Yuzu Palmer which is basically like an iced matcha mixed with Arnold Palmer and yuzu bits. I loved the flavor because I thought the matcha and lemonade flavor went well together and it was quite refreshing (although it may be an acquired taste for some). Personally, I was not a big fan of the yuzu bits and it was on the pricier side ($7). Street parking is available, and we were able to find parking close by pretty quickly on a Sunday around 4:30 PM. Ugh I was so excited to try this place as I've heard good things from others but sadly I was disappointed. We ordered a taro milk tea with boba and a banana milk with boba and were disappointed with both. My taro didn't taste of taro and had a weird tasting texture to it, almost like a powdery oat taste. It was just not a hit for me. The boba was decent but a little tough. The banana milk was decent but again it had a weird texture to it and tasted like it was made with oat milk. But this was years ago, so since my seastar and I were in the area, decided to give it a 2nd chance. As I'm reading their menu, there were so many options and...stuff...Overwhelmed by their offerings, I gave up and decided to go for the all time classic: Classic milk tea with boba. Their tea isn't strong and with it being iced, the milk tea tasted pretty watered down. The chewy bobas were perfectly boiled and sweetened so that's a plus. Usually the saying goes, "3rd times the charm," however, being that their tea base is very un-depth-ful and underwhelming, highly unlikely that there will be a 3rd time. Overall thoughts? Yes, this is the same storefront. On a Saturday, I ordered a seasonal drink.....Coffee Mojito. Coffee Mojito, Large, with Almond Milk and Almond Jelly, 50% sweetness. A strong cold brew coffee drink, with a subtle mint taste. The Almond jelly was nice. I remember eating bowls of almond jelly with fruit cocktail as a dessert in restaurants. Anyway, I like iced coffee, not too sweet. The almond jelly sat on the bottom of the cup, looking like pieces of tofu. Adding a chewy texture to the rich icy coffee. "Dangerous" location (aka too convenient) but I will never complain! I know they have their popular menu items, but I've been adventurous lately and been trying different drinks from here, which I usually don't do. Here are my past ones: Sparkling Mango Matcha: think sparkling matcha, really. Because the matcha overpowers the mango, it just tastes like mango was never there to begin with. Likely not ordering again but it was refreshing. My friend, on the other hand, thought this was the best drink that Boba Guys had put out. Pink Pitaya: not only is it beautiful, it also tastes creamy but also refreshing. It's a non-caffeinated drink (no tea) - I believe it is mainly fruit with alt milk. Blueberry Corn Milk: also looks pretty, but not as exciting as the pitaya. The corn milk is unique and I think it can sway both ways for people. Still a yummy fruit drink! Black Sesame Latte: very nutty! Tastes exactly like sesame paste if you're into that. My only complaint is that because it is so nutty, I think more sweetness would be needed to balance it out - but I'd fare on the less side so next time I will try it with less sugar... When writing a review on Yelp, when you select two stars, it says "Could've been better." That's exactly how I feel about this Boba Guys location in Rockridge. The boba in our drinks was too hard. It tasted old. I was disappointed, especially from an established, popular, and local Bay Area brand. Maybe we just went on a bad night, but it shouldn't be that way. Boba Guys prides itself on its boba and unfortunately, this batch was not good. We visited on a Friday shortly after 8pm. We parked nearby on the street for free (College Ave). I was a little surprised at how empty it was on a Friday night. It was just us and another party of two, sitting by the storefront window. There was no line, customers waiting on orders, or people standing around outside enjoying their tea. The pickup counter had a few DoorDash/online orders ready to go, so at least they had that going for them. My 10-year-old niece is a fan of this place. We both got one of Boba Guys' specialty drinks. She had the Strawberry Fields and I had the Korean Banana Milk. We had 16-ounce servings, priced at $5.85 each, plus housemade boba priced at $0.75 each. So, $6.60 per drink before tax and tip. We ordered the Strawberry Fields with Straus organic milk (dairy). Strawberry Fields is milk poured over Boba Guys' housemade strawberry puree. The Korean Banana Milk comes with oat milk mixed with all-natural housemade banana jam. The flavors of both drinks were good. They were sweet and delicious. The Strawberry Fields drink had a strong, kind of sharp/acidic but pleasant, strawberry flavor. I'm not sure what made the Korean Banana Milk "Korean," but it tasted similar to banana bread in milk form. I liked it. My sister tried some and she liked it too. It was just the boba was off. And there was too much ice in each cup. I should've asked for less ice (if they allow that here; our favorite boba places in Atlanta do). Because of the poor boba, overall, these were some lackluster drinks, especially for the Bay Area. I'm sure it wasn't up to the founders' standards. Not sure what happened here. Since it was nighttime, we chose caffeine-free drinks which Boba Guys' menu clearly identifies. I like that because many evenings I've found myself looking at a bubble tea menu trying to discern what's caffeine-free or I just ask the cashier. One thing I noticed on the menu that I'm not sure I've seen elsewhere is a decaf black tea option. I like that too and wish more bubble tea shops offered that. Boba Guys offers drinks in two sizes: 16 ounces and 24 ounces. Also, according to the menu, Boba Guys has the first and only tapioca pearl (boba) factory in the US. I take that to mean they make their boba completely from scratch stateside. Service was fine. Since it wasn't busy, we were seen and served immediately. As far as the shop goes, inside, it's bright and cute. There's really no seating except for a couple stools at the front plus the waiting benches by the pickup counter. My friend and I have been eyeing their seasonal drinks. I ordered the Caramel Matcha Latte, a unique but delicious combination! It was rich, creamy, not overly sweet, and tasted like burnt caramel. My friend said it tasted like salted caramel or butterscotch. My friend ordered the Peppermint White Chocolate Matcha Latte. I had a few sips and loved it! It tasted like a light mint and chip ice cream but in drink form! The shop is small, bright, and modern, and drinks are all to-go! This is strictly for the ube latte! I've been to Boba Guys at other locations and sadly this is the second time at a different location that the ube latte was a miss. This time both me and my boyfriend got the ube latte and we could barely taste the ube in either cups. At the other location the ube latte had a ginger aftertaste to it. As a ube lover sadly I can't recommend the ube latte here, but the shop/chain is not a complete miss because their famed strawberry matcha has never failed me. I was just so excited for this drink and was let down. I also couldn't adjust the sugar level for this one.
