They cleaned and fixed. A previous technician told me I would need to replace my safety valves but Bob's Appliance showed me that indeed they were working, just that the buttons were slow to come back out when reset. That was important for me to see that the safety valves were working and I did not need to spend 1000.00 fixing them. He also humored me and brought the gas leak detector to show me no other connections were leaking! Great company! read more

Superior excellence!! So glad they were there to help with the old stackable Maytag washer that was dumping water everywhere. It needed a belt which they fixed. Next load worked fine but a week later it dumped more water. They came back right away when I called them and determined it was the sensor (which they don't make anymore). I called in the morning and Bob offered to come out the same morning. And he arrived right on time. Sadly, my dryer was toast, and he rightly suggested a new dryer rather than the motor, which would run me almost as much as a new dryer. However, I also had a problem with my washer's lid switch. He jimmied it with pliers - something I had already tried, and thankfully decided right before he left to look closer. I needed a new lid switch after all, which he promptlly replaced. I was a little disappointed that the service call was not credited since I had work done but some places don't. So, while I found the parts and labor reasonable, I was disappointed with the 80 dollar service charge. read more

It was 5:45. Guests for dinner were arriving at 7. I had peeled potatoes and beets ready to go in the oven. But the wires in the oven (which I found out later should not be there) had completely deteriorated due to an oven fire a few weeks before. So yes, I had put myself in this precarious position, but was looking for a quick fix and fast. And while no one - not GE, not Maytag, not any service out there was able to come and at least tell me my oven was safe, dear old Bob showed up in 20 minutes to help. He told me that the starter had actually been installed incorrectly (read: danger) and he completely fixed the issue, replacing the wires and putting them where they should be. Which is not in the oven. He then answered all my absurd questions about the oven and safety and really anything else I wanted to know. He is a sweet man, quick with his tools, and overall a gem. He quoted me over the phone for his diagnostic fee which was more than reasonable. Sure enough he shows up at right at 12:00 checks & has my dryer working normal by 12:30! Bob has been fixing appliances for 30 years, which is almost as long as I've been alive. He is encyclopedic in his appliance knowledge. We had an emergency situation with our Maytag stove (the emergency being that the stove has been broken for 6 months and I was about to lose my shit if I had to light the stove with matches for a single day longer), and I called every repair guy with a 5 star rating for a last minute appointment. I was practically laughed out of town. Finally I reached Bill, who must have heard the panic in my voice, because he said "Ok, I am on my way to a job, but I'll try to swing by." He quoted his pricing up front, arrived and tore apart the stove efficiently and quickly, located the wires that had come loose*, replaced them, and rebuilt the stove. Was upfront about (totally reasonable) costs, as others have mentioned. Was polite, efficient, on-time, and just no-nonsense. Bob asked how I had heard about his service. I said, "Yelp." Then I asked him, "Have you ever read your Yelp reviews?" He said, "No, I'm not very good with computers." So I began to wonder about the only non-5-star review and think that it must have been some sort of fluke or misunderstanding. Sorry about that. Bob and his son replaced the water intake valve on our washer (the old one was failing, which caused the washer to sometimes fill when it wasn't operating). I probably could have done it myself with the help of a friend, but it would have taken all afternoon since we have a stacked washer/dryer that is hard to access. Bob and his son responded quickly to our call, finished the work in 30 minutes, and charged what was in my opinion a fair price. Bob was also very friendly. Bob's Appliance Service just completed the requested job. We needed our washer's cold water filter cleaned and replace our rubber hoses with new nylon braided ones. While we had another top rated Yelp company come out and assess, the estimate work order and parts came out to over double what Bob quoted on the high end. Bob was responsive, upfront, honest, and accurate with his estimate which required his son to help move the stacked W/D unit. In fact, they actually finished inside a hour. They even cleaned the area behind the units while the appliances were out. As I told them, I hope I don't need to call them but if I do have any future appliance issues, I will definitely call them first. read more

I have a beautiful old Wedgewood stove that had a few problems: it wouldn't light by itself (I'd been using a lighter for over a year), I smelled trace amounts of gas in the kitchen, the griddle didn't work, and the oven door didn't shut all the way. The one I wanted to get fixed were the first two issues. I had heard of Wedgewood repair services in Berkeley, but I wanted someone as local as possible to support their business. I found Bob's on Yelp and called and left a message. After not hearing back all day, I was a little disappointed and planning to find someone else. However, the next morning, I got a call back from Tommy and the first thing he explained was that they work three days a week (M/W/F). He was very nice and patient listening to my issues and asked if I'd checked the pilot lights for the gas leak. It was clear from the short conversation that he knew about these stoves, and although I was hesitant about the high cost (at the time of this writing, $90 for the visit itself and $90 for each half hour of the visit), I made an appointment for the following week. He was right about the pilot light, one of the two was out and I was able to re-light it and have not smelled any gas since. The visit was great. He called when he was on his way and showed up within the 2 hr time window he had specified. He was young, polite, and soft-spoken. Within 10 seconds of removing the covers to see inside, he was able to tell the burners had been accidentally switched, probably during some deep cleaning, and the tubes weren't lining up with the pilot lights anymore. He switched them back and my stove was lighting like it used to! Since I was already going to be paying for half an hour of labor, and it had only taken him 3 minutes to uncover, diagnose, and fix the problem, I asked if he could take a look at the griddle. He patiently answered my questions and was able to fix that too! So stoked to make burgers on there this weekend. We still weren't at the half hour mark. He then asked how my oven was doing. I mentioned it was great, except the door didn't fully close to a sealed position. Another 5 minutes, and he had fixed that too! At this point, we were at the half hour mark, so when I asked how much I owed, I was steeling myself to have to write a check for a full hour, since by the time we'd be done, we'd be slightly over 30 minutes and he'd done more than we had planned (clearly I've had much experience getting ripped off). Imagine my pleasant surprise when he charged me the amount for a 30 minute visit! I will definitely be using Bob's Appliance Service for any future appliance servicing needs! read more

I live in an old Victorian and have a gas fireplace that I use all the time because it is my main source of heat. The first time it stopped working, I was worried about the cost and most of the places I called simply said I would have to replace it. It is difficult to find places that will fix fireplaces and appliance insurance won't cover the fireplace. Customer service is terrible. They are quick to put the blame on you and not friendly at all. I had an appointment from 1-5 pm. They called at about 9 am to see if the technician could come early. I work nights so I was asleep and didn't really want them to come early. I called them back at 1 pm and they stated that a technician has already came that way and because I didn't answer the phone they would have to come back another day and it was my fault. Seriously though when I schedule 1 to 5 and I don't answer try again from 1 to 5. However, the technicians are great. Would definitely recommend them. Very thorough on time service at a fair price. I have an older french stove that no one sells or carries parts for in the USA. Consequently most repair services don't even want to look at it.
