Downgrading for service and limited menu. Last few times we came in the restaurant has been nearly empty. Yet, the hosts still try to sit us in the terribly uncomfortable hard wood chairs that feel like Medieval torture devices. Plenty of booths available yet they push the terrible seating. Also not excited about the menu. If you are not in the mood for pizza or pasta in a night there are only 5 entrees on the menu, and none of them are exciting. While they do have daily specials they just rotate daily over 7 days but rarely offer new interesting dishes into the mix. Overall they are still good. Not only was it cold, it arrived with not one piece of visible basil. This is a very simple pizza and basil is a key component. Four of us just had lunch here today (on a Friday). Arrived at 12:30 and took an outdoor table. Music was a bit loud, so we eventually asked if they could turn it down. Service was friendly and prompt. Interestingly, none of us ordered anything Italian. We started with a grilled artichoke appetizer... it was cut in half, so we cut it into quarters (might have been something the server could have offered since cutting an artichoke with a butter knife isn't very easy). It came with a wonderful dipping sauce and a grilled lemon. Flavors were bright and wonderful. Not a lot of "meat" on this artichoke, though. Might be because we're in the off season. (Sorry about the photo, I didn't take one until after we cut it up, so you're missing out on the nice presentation.) Two of us (including me) ordered the Boca Salad with grilled chicken and an Apple cider vinaigrette. One of us asked for some Caesar dressing on the side. The julienned pear and apple were crisp and refreshing. The vinaigrette was sweet, tangy, and went perfectly with the fruit and chicken chunks. Salad was fresh. Perfect meal for me. My wife ordered the Grilled Flatbread Wrap with chicken. It came with a side salad, and she ended up taking half of the wrap home to enjoy tomorrow. The fourth person ordered the beet salad. She looked like she enjoyed it! For dessert, we sampled the Fiorello's chocolate chocolate chip gelato (chocolaty, but maybe tasted more like ice cream), Affogato Fiorello, and the wonderfully rich Warm Apple Rustic Tart with an amazing caramel sauce. My husband and I arrived to Boca Pizzeria at 8:23 this past Saturday night, looking forward to dinner after our movie. It was a rare date night and we both have loved Boca's food and ambiance in the past. However, this time, upon entering the restaurant, we were not even greeted by the young Latina hostess, nor the older Latina woman (perhaps another hostess)? who was standing guard by the front door. It was awkward, to say the least. We were waiting to be seated when we observed the silent exchange between the two women. The younger one looked at the older one who rolled her eyes, and the younger one proceeded to say, "I'll need to ask if the kitchen is already closed." There was No "hello." No "how can I help you?" No, "how many for dinner tonight?" Just super short and rude. My husband and I were confused as we thought we had over 30 minutes until they stopped seating new arrivals at 9:00. Coming from food service backgrounds, this was always the case. We even make it a point to never be those annoying couples who enter the restaurant at 2 minutes to the hour, expecting to be seated. However, this was over 30 minutes. It was 8:23, on a warm summer Saturday night. People were enjoying meals both outside and inside (though far fewer than I would have expected on a Saturday night). I wonder how many other couples and families had been turned away so the staff could clock out early and go home? I mean, I get it. I'm sure they were tired and wanted to go home and enjoy their weekend as well. But then don't elect to take the evening/dinner shift. Or have management change the timing for last seating to 8:20 instead of 9:00 pm. We were most definitely turned away, however, with no apology, no compassion that we now needed to try to find another restaurant when we had been looking forward to eating there. Thankfully, the Speakeasy down the street was open, and despite being PACKED, they welcomed us happily and we ended up tipping very well, as we always do and would have at Boca as well. Boca has definitely disappointed. We should have listened to our friends who had a similar experience a couple of weekends ago, but we thought that it must have been a fluke. Nope! We're unlikely to be back without a change in hosts/hostesses. They are the face of the restaurant. And are doing it quite the disservice. Such a shame :( read more

Have I had better pizza? Yes. Have I had better pizza in Marin? No, not even close. This is my favorite pizza place in Marin and our go-to spot when we want pizza. Ask if exceptions can be made , someone wanted to substitute a Side salad and was told no. when a mistake is made i.e. food ordered is forgotten- that should be compensated off the bill. Went to pick up and was told they weren't taking orders for pick up but many people were coming in to get their food. When I asked what the problem was, who I assume was the manager told me "my restaurant is too busy, we are not taking orders, don't know why your went through, what la in the order". No apology, no explanation, no nothing. I feel very bad for food delivery people if this is the way they get treated. Horrible service and nil attempt for service recovery. I'm glad the business is booming. Update - got the food. Greeter handed to me and was VERY NICE. I confirmed this lady was the manager. I told him "things happen". Came here for an early birthday on a hot, dog day afternoon. We were seated quickly, after changing our reservation from outside to inside. Very accommodating front help. We were greeted quickly as well and placed a wine order (Duckhorn Pinot Noir). Our server, Angel, was fun to work with. We placed our food order shortly after the wine arrived and was approved. We ordered a bit of food for just three people. The order was a Gemelli pasta, a Portobello and porcini mushroom ravioli, a polenta, a grilled artichoke appetizer, an organic roasted beets salad, a Rustico salad, and a warm apple tart for dessert. Whooo! The food arrived in good order (appetizers first, then salads, and so on), was nice and hot, and was well plated; it was very appetizing to just look at, let alone smell. The ravioli was a pleasant surprise, not a lot of them, but they were earthy, tasty and a different taste than I have had before, so very nice to try. Overall, the best part was the warm apple tart. It was different and very yummy, the soft apples and crust having a bit of a battle over texture. Overall, it was a tie. And I actually won after all in the end. A great early birthday meal. On our visit we had a very rude waiter who should never be allowed to deal with people. The restaurant automatically adds a 20% tip and a 4% surcharge. We asked them to explain this and they said we could adjust it. We gave 15% which I felt was not wait due to the waiter's behaviour. I posted a not so great review about the service here two years ago, and believe that it only fair to update my feedback since, contrary to my original plan, I have actually been back as I was meeting several friends, who picked Boca Pizzeria as meeting place. The difference in service was night & day. Not only was everyone welcoming & professional, from check in to food service, we saw one of the shift managers go way out of his way to assist a special needs customer, who was disoriented and needed help finding his way to another establishment. Yummy dinner at BOCA last night!! All the food was fantastic and the prices are fairly reasonable for Marin. We split the Ceasar salad and I had the truffled mac and cheese for my main, and my husband had the Alfredo and added chicken. Dessert was super yummy as well. The ambiance on the front patio and indoors is nice. I'm not as much of a fan of the covered patio. Service was slow as there were only two servers for the whole restaurant on a Saturday night. I was finally able to use the very generous gift card that management gave me due to my previous negative experience. I must say it was like night and day! We, unfortunately, weren't able to come in to the restaurant due to our toddler being ill but the food was warm, fresh and delicious when we got it home. The portions are plenty and my husband loved the short rib pizza. It was soft and crunchy in the right places! I was impressed with how management handled my review and made the situation right. The reviews here would corroborate with my view, but we ended up asking for our service since we were on a tight schedule. It was pizza night and we started off with brussel sprouts. Not the best I've ever had since they were not as crispy as they could've been. The parmagiano reggiano was a nice touch with a nutty contrast. - PEPPERONI & FENNEL SAUSAGE: I was getting full and still wanted more. When hot, the San Marzano tomato taste really comes out, complemented by the gooey mozzarella, hot pepperoni with crispy edges and fragrant fennel sausage. The pizza was a bit wet and fell apart with fork and knife but the flavor was excellent. The dough was nice and chewy from bottom to edge. They definitely use more 00 flour here. - MUSHROOM + FENNEL SAUSAGE: White sauce, mushroom with the addition of fennel sausage makes for a completely different pizza. As for the show, we saw a production of the staff cleaning up after a messy table with small children dropping home-brought snacks and restaurant food. Then as we were getting ready to leave, a customer complained about a dish still being wet the second time around. He made a scene before leaving despite having a comped meal. We had lunch at Boca today and after being very disappointed about having the lamb sandwich removed from the menu we ordered the replacement of the steak wrap sandwich, and when it came found that it had also changed and now involved a bunch of roasted peppers and onions opposed to the pesto and lettuce that was in the previous sandwich. My husband ordered chicken Alfredo that came with 6 small chunks of meat, pasta was over done. And had no seasoning My husband says hospital cafeteria chicken Alfredo is four times better even with low salt. My linguini vongole was overcooked, didn't have any seasoning or salt and tasted like dishwater. Our service was just as bad and it wasn't until we had stopped eating for 15 mins and then stacked all our plates that a waiter came over to ask if he could take the plates. My daughter asked for a dessert menu and the waiter came back with a to-go box for food that had already had plate's stacked to take away. We had to hunt down a hostess to finally get the bill. The sit down restaurant has a beautiful modern, industrial aesthetics and family friendly vibes. As I was saying, the decor is modern, beautiful, and fresh looking. We opted to sit out on the patio. But the flies seemed to like the patio as well. We were bothered by lots of them during our meal. I got a good arm workout shooing them away. As the daylight turned to dusk, the up lighting on the trees were beautiful. Anyway onto the food, Hubs ordered a pepperoni pizza. The pizzas are wood fired and Neapolitan styled. They use San Marzano tomato sauce. The pizza looked beautiful with its puffy crackled, flamed blistered exterior crust. It was tasty until I got halfway towards the middle of my slice. The interior crust was doughy and wet. I ordered the cioppino $29, it was the house special of the night. It was gorgeously presented in a large bowl served with cheesy garlic bread. The bread was terrific. The broth was not bad but could stand to have more flavor. The cioppino had clams, mussels, shredded lobster meat, and shrimp. read more

This was our go too place for many years. However, the food has deteriorated badly in the last year. In addition they are adding adding 4% to the bill as a "benefit surcharge". The employees tell us that they do not receive benefits or any of the funds to provide their own. In addition there is no warning on the Menu announcing this fee. Took a nibble. Tasted far worse. Hands down one of the worst dining experiences in Marin or Sonoma Counties...ever! Another star performance. This is such a nice indoor/outdoor, comfy place to eat a big meal, chat with friends over pizza and wine, or just sit and drink wine. The menu is basically the same and only occasionally are there specials. Not a problem. I ordered the spaghetti al pomodoro ($28), but wanted shrimp instead of chicken. Thought that might get lost in translation with the cookers, but no, there would be an up-charge. OK...let's do it. The up-charge: $4.52. So substitutions CAN happen. Wife did sausage and pepperoni pizza, always good, along with a 9oz Zin ($16). I was the other Zin drinker. Son had a meatball pizza and a beer ($6). I've been going to Boca Pizzeria in Novato for years, at least once a week. The food is uniformly good, and their service is excellent. Their pizza is one of the best in Marin. They make an excellent Shrimp Risotto, Grilled Artichoke, and Linguine Vongole. My favorite was their Lamb Sandwich, which I consistently ordered. The Lamb Sandwich was made with a pesto sauce and grilled onions. It was delicious. However, on a recent visit, I saw that they had changed the menu, replacing the Lamb Sandwich with a thinly-sliced steak in a flatbread wrap. I told the manager that I was VERY disappointed in the omission. Lamb is one of the better meats you can eat. And what could be more Italian than agnello? Please bring back the Lamb Sandwich. read more

Wow, I can't believe I haven't reviewed this restaurant! I have been enjoying great food and service at Boca for almost 2 years. The broccolini appetizer is my go to. It's perfectly grilled with fried capers, parm, and lemon zest. It's delicious. On my most recent trip I ordered the eggplant parm special, it has a choice of sides, rigatoni or mixed greens. I opted for the greens which had a light but flavorful dressing. My friend got the Brussels and pancetta pizza. The crust was perfectly cooked. For dessert he had the tiramisu and I had the apple tart. My only complaint was there was no apple and the tart was more like a scone. That being said it was still good and not a bite was left. Lovely little restaurant! My friends and I went during lunch time and enjoyed the bright, airy feel inside. The food came out after a decent amount of time for a group of five. The service was great; they were very attentive and filled up our waters as soon as they were low. They also let us know that on Wednesdays, full bottle wines are half off! Our server was super helpful and offered some guidance on a wine to choose. The food was very tasty! I ordered the pappardelle which was so creamy, and the pasta had a nice texture to it. My only issue with it was that some parts of the pasta were bunched together like it had not properly detached so it was an odd bite. Not what I expected from a 27 dollar dish. Other hits around the table were the spaghetti a la norma and the pizza, but not the alfredo pasta.
