I had high expectations for this place, but unfortunately, it was a complete disappointment. We ordered chicken and ground beef empanadas. The chicken empanadas tasted spoiled, with a sour and acidic flavor that clearly indicated they were not fresh. The ground beef empanadas were okay. We also ordered a churrasco, which was good but nothing special, and the Gaucha platter, which was also just average. The cocktails were disappointing and not enjoyable. The only positive aspect of our visit was the service. The staff was friendly, attentive, and pleasant throughout our meal. Bodega Sur was incredible! We had a reservation and were promptly seated. It is very dimly lit. We started with margaritas and the pulpo. Then, we each had a beef empanada. I had the vacio while my husband had the el gaucho. Our friends also opted for the vacio and a plate of lengua. The margaritas were delicious but my only complaint is that they were very small. With the amount of ice and lime, it seemed like maybe 4oz at most. The pulpo was very good. The empanadas were good on their own but the chimichurri really elevated the flavors! The vacio plates were excellent. The steaks were cooked perfectly medium rare, seasoned to perfection, and the chimichurri with this was also incredible. I loved the ensalada on the side. The dressing was perfect! A simple delicious vinaigrette. The lengua was served cold which was a little off putting for us, but it was still good. The el gaucho plate was huge and also delicious! An amazing neighborhood gem just a few blocks away! We've been walking by Bodega Sur almost everyday for 6 months and been wanting to experience this Argentinian local favorite. Valentine's Day felt like a good opportunity. The ribeye and Brazilian cut dishes were prepared to perfection with rich flavors and cooked to our taste. We were pleasantly surprised with the slow roasted octopus dish called Pulpo. One special feature here are the wines for sale. Aside from a selection of wines by the glass, all wine bottles are displayed within a bookcase-like wall. You can walk right up to it and explore a potential wine bottle for purchase which you can enjoy at your table:) Juan, our server was amazing...very professional and friendly. The lighting is dim and it's a cozy place with a lively atmosphere. There's a bar and also I think a wine tasting bar as well. I'll probably do some wine tasting on my next visit. We came here on a Sunday afternoon following a show at the lovely Music Box Theatre and the place was packed. Bodega Sur has some unique and cocktails as well as traditional Margaritas, Sangrias and beers, served in beautiful glasses. I loved the Sunday brunch menu and shareable appetizers like a hand crafted charcuterie board or several choices of empanadas. The sweet beef empanadas were a savory blend of beef and sauces in a crispy, flaky shell. The ham and cheese was really good and very cheesy. We left satisfied but not feeling ridiculously full. Sit at the bar for some fun conversation with the fabulous bar tenders and staff. I also like the decor and use of hand painted tequila bottles with candles. Nothing blew my mind but everything was good. The steak plate came with 5 cuts of beef (tenderloin, short rib, skirt, rump?, and sausage). They are standard quality beef (not prime), lesser cuts, and can be a tough to chew, but very well cooked and delicious without being too salty. For $54, it's a very good value, and a must get IMO. The cons of this place is the side dishes and wines are quite expensive. read more

The food is delicious and the service is very good. The breakfast burrito is one of the best that I've had. It is a nice place but a bit tight with a lot of tables squeezed in there. There is an outdoor space which is nice in the summer. I recommend this spot for a weekend brunch but it is a bit pricey. read more

So glad I finally tried this place! It's very charming inside and the food was amazing. My group and I enjoyed empanadas and the choriboard to start. I had this amazing entree of which the name escapes me (maybe marinara napolitana?): it was basically breaded chicken topped with a thin layer of ham, mozzarella cheese, and marinara sauce, served with mashed potatoes. DELISH! We were too full for dessert. We did sample several bottles of wine: the restaurant is also a wine shop, so you browse the wine on display against one wall and bring what you want back to your table. It's a great system; I just wish there were notes provided about the wine or a menu to supplement the wall. Some tables are very close to the wine wall and it's awkward browsing all the selections without intruding on someone's table space. Service was very good all night, and the price was right. Ended up here since I got waitlisted in the restaurant next door and wow, how did I not know about Bodega Sur before? This place is fantastic! Bodega sur is like a small version of everyone's favorite, Tango Sur, but for sure less crowded and less wait times. I truly loved the concept of picking my own bottle of wine from their shelves. Those are organized by country and type so it's easier to choose, especially if you know what are you getting for food. My friends and I ordered many dishes and shared. We came to Bodega Sur for dinner and are so glad we did- everything was wonderful. We had the bodega filet, antipasto plate, and the caipirinha. The filet was perfectly cooked, flavorful and the asparagus was amazing. The antipasto was the right size for two people (we ordered the small) and actually had some left over. I haven't had a caipirinha this good since I was in Brazil! We sat on the patio which was nice, the interior was very cute with a bar, tables, and a small wine shop. The service was very friendly, accommodating, and the meal was timed perfectly. 5/5 this is a steakhouse that is under-rated and I'm surprised it doesn't get more hype / attention from the chicago foodie scene. read more

Great experience - the environment and service here are hard to beat. The food itself is also very, very good. The steak came out perfectly medium rare and the selection of sauces was great. We showed up at our reserved time and the restaurant was empty. This establishment is dimly lit and only has a few tables that I could see. I'm not sure if there's another dining area. This was great! We came here for lunch on a Friday and I got the lomito sandwich and my friend got the chilaquiles with steak. Both were great! My sandwich came with so much steak on it I could literally take it out and just eat the steak if I wanted to. I also got the fresh squeezed orange juice which was lovely. Right next door to its sister and fancier restaurant tango sur but honestly half of the menu is the same. If you come for dinner they still serve you table bread but the entrees won't come with extra salad before the main course. Steaks are the same quality and they also have a selection of sandwiches which is what I'm hooked on. The Lomito has become a family favorite of ours with its thinly sliced steak sandwiched between a healthy serving of tomatoes, lettuce and their heavenly sauce. When I most recently went the steak in the sandwich was a little chewy but I hope it was a one off since every other experience I've had has been exceptional. Their sweet potato fries also hit the spot! Outdoor dining is available but I quite enjoy the more romantic dark dining room. We were walking down Southport looking for a dinner spot and came across bodega sur. We love sitting at the bar and were lucky to come scores two spots. The bartender was good and made some food recommendations that we ended up loving. He did get busy at times requiring us to ask to flag him down a few times but that didn't annoy us. The drinks we had were a special of the day and delicious- it was aperol, mezcal, ginger beer and lemon. It was wonderful and refreshing. We started off sharing the beef and ham and cheese empanadas. They were both crispy, thin and flakey dough filled with flavorful and well seasoned meat and cheese. The empanadas came with a side of the chimichurri that was wonderful and I literally put on everything. We ordered Tabla Gaucha which was the meat sampler plate. We asked for the meats to all be cooked to medium and it was spot on. The meat was flavorful and came with your choice of three different sauces. All three were amazing and complemented the meats well. The salad with the meats was a tomato one- I am totally biased and loved it. But I also could sit and just eat a plate of plain tomatoes. So to be fair- it you don't love tomatoes this salad will not be for you- and I would recommend seeing if they could switch it for another kind (I saw an arugula one on the menu). This small place is very cute and recommend for a quick lunch date. Our server was very attentive and patient with us as it was our first time coming. I highly recommend the Camarones salteados (especially if you like tomatos) which the shrimp was very plump and every bite was very refreshing. I also ordered the entrana which they cooked it very well and I ordered it with a sunny side up egg to get more of a lomo saltados feel. I have been coming to Bodega and Tango Sur for AGES. I have had every birthday at Tango till I moved out of Chicago, but everytime I am back I stop in. I stopped into Bodega and caught up with a friend over some white wine sangria and a paloma! Which was so good especially if you are in the mood for something sweet! We started with beef empanadas which were delicious the filling always has the best flavours and is never dry and the outside is crunchy and fluffy! I then had the steak and shrimp plate and it never disappoints! Everything has so much flavor! She got the short rib which was also Delicious! We came here for Sunday Brunch! I must say we have never ventured past Lululemon on Southport, but we are so glad we did! Bodega Sur is the perfect place for a relaxing, quality meal. I was very excited that we had the opportunity to look at their wine selection (available for purchase) while we waited for our food. However, when I food came I was even more excited especially for this spinach empanada. I would say that was the highlight of our visit. It was 10/10 one of the best empanadas that has ever reached my mouth. We split a burrito and sandwich which were good, but I think when we come back I would definitely try out all the empanadas.
