It's been a while since I went there last time and they sent me a reminder to do another test and that's why I decided to leave a yelp review. I personally never tried body scans before and don't know why I decided to give a try but I was so curious so I went ahead and made an appointment. It was quite easy, I just needed to submit an online form. When I arrived, they asked me to sign in and took me right away. Test itself was pretty fast and they gave me my results right away. Omg, I was so shocked when I saw it. I knew I had to lose some extra pounds but it was like an eye opener(for a month lol) Anyways, they explained the results and also were able to give me my rested calorie intake. The lady who assisted me(I didn't catch her name) was so friendly and answered all my questions. Once the pandemic is gone I'll definitely do one more test just out of curiosity although not sure if it's any better haha But for those who want to check body fat percentage or muscle mass I would highly recommend it. So basically they say "you'll get your results within 30 mins" but what they don't tell you up front when you book is that you can't interpret them without a trained professional. The numbers literally mean nothing unless someone walks you through it. I didn't expect that so now have to wait over a week to make time for a virtual "group" appointment to have my results explained. Wish I would have known that ahead of time. I think I would have gone somewhere else to have 1:1 time with someone who could read and discuss my results. Likely I'll try another place for the next go round. read more

I had gone to one of the moving vans for the dmx a year ago and it was good. I decided to go to their main location in culver city which is in a business complex. They haven't got the sign up yet but if you just follow the numbers its easy to find. There is a sign on the door. They are very punctual about time and keep things moving so be on time. My appointment before my DNX ran late so I was 10 mins late here but they were kind enough to still get me in as it was a long drive for me to get there. I did 2 of the tests, the DMX which measures body fat, bone density and lean muscle. I also did the RMR test for measuring your metabolic resting rate. If you are an athlete or just like data on your own fitness progress this are good tests to have. read more

This place is probably self selective... it's for people that are OCD about getting data about their specific body type (in reality, you really can estimate this stuff for free within a decent margin of error). But, I'm one of those people... I NEED to know. So I took two tests: the DXA and the RMR. During the DXA, they estimate your RMR, so I got to see how my measured metabolism compared to the estimated number. During the DXA, they take you to the back room, make you take off your jewelry, and then you lay down for ~10min. During the RMR, you go into a separate room and lay down and breath into this tube, while your nose is shut. My nose piece kept sliding off, and you actually have to consciously breath, so I guess measuring your RMR doesn't happen when your body is in a shavasana-like experience? Afterwards they went over both my test results. Previously, I've had my body fat % taken with calipers, a home-scale and the bioelectrical impedance machines. My body fat % was actually 5 percentage points different than other measurements I've taken recently. Online booking is easy, and the test are quick. read more

This place is short of useless. Well it says that it's a 10 minute consultation but he couldn't answer the basic questions that my mom and I had. For instance, my mom asked how she could lose some weight more efficiently for her age and he said "Well it's just taking less in than you burn. You can use a smart watch or calculator to figure that out." I wanted to say "you're kidding?" To me, that's not a consultation. You're supposed to be a fitness person and he gave her that generic answer. Also, I asked how BodySpec measures the body differently than others, including my doctor, because my body fat didn't come out nearly as high at my doctor and he couldn't give a straight forward answer. Additionally my mom asked for the nutritionalist and the gentleman offered his services. During the consultation he said that he's unavailable but could recommend someone. So why did you offer earlier to begin with? He was very nice but he's not a fitness expert. He knows how to explain the chart but that "consultation" that's offered is a joke read more

Went in for a Dexa scan and VO2 Max test. The staff is great, friendly, and efficient. I had an issue with my VO2 Max results. I wasn't happy with a sub-portion of the results that came back skewed. After I provided my feedback to the company, they handled it in a very professional manner and I was able to get the information I was looking for in the end. Those who give a bad rating because their results aren't in line with their expectations are not being fair. Use it as a baseline, work on improving, and go back to see if you improved. read more

The place is clean and everyone is friendly and professional. It's easy to book and relatively inexpensive. Those are the plusses. However, I have questions about the accuracy. I first started going to them while doing a cut and all went as expected - fat down and eventually some muscle loss. Then maintenance - also as expected except for a sudden drop in muscle and increase in fat. I had been working with a coach and assumed I just screwed up my eating more than I thought. Didn't understand the muscle loss as I was not eating at a deficit and was doing a pretty strenuous lifting program. But ok. Now I'm massing and the first scan had me up both muscle and fat. Way more muscle than fat which seemed unusual but as a first-time masser not impossible. Four weeks later at mass end I go back and....up 4 lbs of fat and DOWN 3 lbs muscle? Given that I'm lifting 5-15 lbs more on all lifts than when I was last scanned AND working with a coach (who called the results laughable)....also I've gained 3lbs; it has me up only one. I wouldn't mention that except every other time my weight on the scan tracked perfectly. I don't know how these machines are tested or whether technicians can do something that might affect results but something isn't right. Sadly I won't be going back. read more

I have been working on toning for about six weeks and wanted to get a better read on my body fat percentage as well as determine my overall growth during this time period. I scanned the internet and came across Body Spec and was intrigued by the opportunities to learn about my fat tissue, lean tissue, visceral fat as well as bone density. I was not aware that Body Spec had a mobile unit that would be available the very next day I was looking to have this test done in Long Beach. They travel all around LA and Orange County. The test is very easy as you can have the test done fully dressed (no metal in the low dosage X-ray machine) within about 6 minutes. I highly recommend BodySpec if you are an athlete, competitor or seriously tracking your progress. I'm a bikini competitor and started getting a DEXA scan every 6 weeks to track my competition prep progress. This is the most thorough way to measure your body fat, a lot of people think water weighing is #1 but that is a general body fat %. The DEXA scan will break your body fat % down by arms, legs and 3 core regions. It shows the weight, lean mass, fat mass and fat % for those areas so you can really see where you carry most fat and if you're losing from those areas. The space is very beautiful, clean and modern. The process takes around 20 minutes so you're in and out. Parking is easy, parked for free right in front. I personally suggest doing this first thing in the morning so you get your true weight, body fat % etc. It is $45/scan, some might find that inexpensive, I personally find it a little pricey but worth it for tracking my competition prep. read more

I was seen on time and was in and out. A few minor, completely doable enhancements BodySpec could make so that their business is top notch: Dust. Every corner of the room was dusty and had cobwebs. Even the vent on the computer machine had a dust collection hanging off of it- the equipment used for expensive testing should be immaculate. The blanket in the RMR room had crumbs on it. Timer. Breathing through a tube with your nose sealed is not fun. If there was a countdown timer in the room, that would give customers a better idea of how much time remains, especially first timers. Water. Have those small water bottles available immediately after testing. Your mouth gets super dry during the RMR test. read more

Like others, Tim Ferriss' "4-Hour Body" endorsement got DEXA on my watchlist. BodySpec's van came to our office campus, making it both more affordable and convenient than the nearest informationally inferior BodPod. No wonder they keep booking up their appointments and having to add more days! Mitch's entire scan took about 10 minutes, was non-invasive and painless (unlike caliper tests). I got a print out onsite which Jason helped interpret for me. He wasn't trying to push any unsolicited specific fad diet or exercise routine advice, which was appreciated. When you get your results, Don't Panic! I found my body fat percentage registered 10% points higher than my last caliper reading and 4% points higher than my digital scale estimate. BodySpec gives WHO guidelines on what the "healthy" range by gender and age is, so you have a reference point. According to WHO, I was *gasp* borderline obese. Coworkers were thus skeptical about the test's accuracy, but it did manage to calculate my weight based strictly on my density within 0.1 lbs of what I weighed that morning and the zones it colored fatty in the report were plausibly convincing (if disconcerting when contrasted to my typical top-down view of them). I particularly appreciated the bone density section because my inner hypochondriac had convinced myself that I had estrogen-depleted brittle bones based on some casual offhand comments muttered by my new primary care physician earlier in the week. Crisis averted, my bones are more dense than average, particularly in my marathon-weathering legs and hip sockets. Definitely planning check back quarterly-annually to see how my stats trend and use some of the noisier measures (my digital scale) in the interim. read more

While BodySpec did NOT come up on the list, nor on the Yelp results *cough* Google Ad Words, guys! *cough*, the person at UCLA that I spoke to recommended searching for them online. As of now, I've only made the appointment (and will update this review at another time if I need to change the rating or add info), but I've had a great experience on the website and want to share that. Update: The process was easy and super informative. I only went to learn my body fat percentage but learned way more, and with charts and graphs that show where I am compared to others in my age range, etc. Bryce (Co-founder) was there that day to give me my results, explain everything and to answer any questions I had. Love the business model, enjoyed the experience, learned a lot about my body.
