After a day of shopping, I decided to have lunch here. My delectable meal at Boku Sushi & Grill satisfied my craving for fresh, creatively prepared sushi. I was thrilled that I made the choice to visit this restaurant for the first time. I was warmly greeted and seated right away. In fact, I entered right after opening time. My server was kind and unobtrusive. I perused the menu and she brought water while I was making my decisions. I opted for my standard, reliable choice of fried gyoza. There wasn't anything too extraordinary about this dish, but I was happy that the gyoza didn't taste stale. What really struck me was the delicious, nicely presented, tasty combination of flavors that I found in the Drama Queen roll. This roll contains spicy tuna, avocado, tempura flakes, yellowtail, jalepeno, black tobiko and spicy kimchee sauce. It was so delicious. And fresh! Way to go, Boku! I also ordered a Shrimp Tempura roll that contained avocado, butter lettuce, shrimp tempura, eel sauce and masago. I don't think I've had makimono with lettuce, but I was pleasantly surprised at the taste and texture. The interior seemed modern and had varying tones of gray. After spending the day at Taste of Oviedo and the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, Nancy and I were craving sushi. A quick Yelp search led me to Boku, which had plenty of positive reviews from familiar faces, so I knew it had to be good. Parking is a bit tight, with only about 30 spots in the lot. The restaurant is tucked away in a small plaza at Independence Ln. and E. Horatio Ave., so you might easily miss it unless you're specifically looking or stopping by Kelly's Homemade Ice Cream. Once inside, you'll find a cozy, minimalist setting. The dining area is split into two sections: to the left of the hostess stand, there are a few four-top tables and a sushi bar (about 10-11 seats) where you can watch the chefs in action. To the right, there are mostly booths, which gave us a cozier dining experience. We were promptly greeted, and when we requested one of the larger booths, the staff happily accommodated us. Our server, Victoria, was an absolute star--welcoming, friendly, and attentive. If you dine here, definitely ask for her! Nancy went with the Boku Salad ($6) and the Tuna Roll ($7), while I ordered the Yaki-Udon Noodles with Chicken ($16) to share, which also came with a choice of soup or salad. I opted for the Ginger Salad and added the signature Godzilla Roll ($12). The salads arrived quickly, almost as soon as I got back from the restroom (which, by the way, was spotless). The ginger dressing on my salad was fantastic--so good, it was like ginger-crack! Nancy's Boku Salad was also a hit, served in a huge bowl that made for a fun photo op. Victoria even brought out a gravy boat full of extra ginger dressing--nothing went to waste! Soon after, the Yaki-Udon Noodles arrived, followed by the sushi. Nancy's Tuna Roll came with six pieces of exceptionally fresh tuna. The Godzilla Roll was amazing--also six pieces, but each one was large and packed with ingredients. Shrimp, whitefish, crab, salmon, avocado, scallion, all tempura fried and topped with masago, spicy mayo, and eel sauce. It was a flavor explosion! The Yaki-Udon Noodles were flavorful and fresh, with tasty vegetables, chicken, and perfectly cooked noodles--definitely a great choice. Enjoyed Boku for dinner the other night. I usually come here for lunch, but wanted to try it out for dinner. Service was quick and friendly. We sat right away. Got the Bao buns and the Gyoza for the apps. Bao buns I felt the pork was a little thin and dry, but still liked it. I loved that Gyoza, super flavorful and cooked perfectly. Today, I was able to explore a lot of dishes from their menu and here are my thoughts Salmon series 10/10: This is always my go to on their menu! Salmon is always fresh and the rice is great! Chicken Kaarage 9/10: I normally don't like chicken karaage but decided to give it a try here and it was amazing! Crispy and perfect cut size! Hamachi Toro Nigiri 10/10: Perfect bite size! Very fresh Akami bluefin tuna 8/10: It is better than regular tuna but not worth the price. This is definitely a personal reference but I like it when sashimi texture is fatty Trio sashimi 10/10: The yellowtail in the trio sashimi is very fatty and just melted in my mouth! It was so good! Foxy lady 100/10: This is probably one of the best sushi rolls in Orlando! The truffle makes it so much better and for the price point! It is a steal I've had sushi all over Japan and I would say their quality here is up to par with all the restaurants I've been to in Japan! Very authentic! Now, I don't eat cooked sushi so all my reviews are based off the freshness of the fish that they use, the quality of rice, and the overall taste of the sushi! I got the sushi lunch special. I chose the Salmon Roll & Spicy Tuna roll and it came with Miso Soup. That was some good miso soup! A lot of places it tastes like water but not here. The fish quality was great and I enjoyed my rolls. The Spicy Tuna Roll was more spicy then I'm usually used to and it didn't seem like a spicy mayo. It was good but not my preferred way of it being prepared. I would come here again. The food tastes great and they use good quality ingredients. I have never had a less than stellar experience at Boku. The hosts are always friendly. The servers are wonderful and knowledgeable of the menu. They give great recommendations and are very attentive. Our favorite apps are the Miso Caramel Brussel Sprouts and the tempura rock shrimp. On our last visit, I tried the grilled mushroom salad and loved the house made sesame dressing. It was so flavorful. Our favorite rolls of the day were the toro cano, which was on their seasonal Menu, and their drama queen, but all of the rolls are excellent. Super easy to park thanks to the onsite garage and the setting is so lovely! I really enjoy eating outside on a nice evening thanks to the expansive green area that the patio overlooks. The indoor area is comfy, cozy, and classy too though! With the friendly service on top of everything else, this place hits it out of the park! As always, I start with some miso soup which hits the spot. It's a nice size cup for an appetizer. Then begins the difficult decision of which rolls to go with. I have yet to find a roll I dislike here but some are superior. Tonight I went with the corona ceviche roll which ranked super high! It featured yellow tail with an amazing variety of flavors that came together so well. This roll is officially in my regular rotation now. I also tried the Mexican roll and thoroughly enjoyed the crunchiness from the tempura shrimp. While I don't usually go for a third roll, after trying a bite of my friend's "foxy lady" I was so hooked that I ordered it to go! It has such a fresh and citrusy taste that was quite unique. With the addition of the seared scallop I was hooked! Make a visit to Boku your top priority if you're a sushi lover. Especially if you enjoy unique rolls and trying something different. At Boku, I came in with high expectations after seeing so many strong reviews. We were seated right away on a Friday night, which was a great start and definitely appreciated. While the presentation was solid and nothing tasted bad, there wasn't anything that really stood out. The rolls all blended together in flavor, and none felt distinct or memorable enough to pick a favorite. The rock shrimp had a good sauce, but the shrimp itself lacked seasoning and felt slightly undercooked for my preference, which took away from the dish overall. Service was efficient, but it felt a bit rushed. We were asked for our order almost immediately after drinks arrived, and even after asking for more time, the follow-up came just a few minutes later. I also had to ask for a water refill, which felt like a small miss. Overall, Boku is decent, but not something I'd go out of my way for. In a city like Orlando with so many strong options, it just doesn't separate itself. What surprised me the most was how reasonable the price for everything, especially if you go during happy hour (4:00pm-5:30pm, Monday to Saturday). Upon entering, the interior is dimly lit, but is a good spot for date night. The waiter is very attentive with answering out questions and checking in with us throughout our meal. Everything we had ordered was made with fresh ingredients and you can tell the level of care and thought for creating each dish. The torch salmon belly sat on a bed of really buttery sliced avocados and was drizzled with a yuzu miso glaze. The drama queen roll was indeed a drama queen because each bite was an explosion of flavor since each piece had a slice of fresh jalapeño. The area around the restaurant is pretty cute, and it has seating outside by some nice trees. Overall, I was a bit disappointed with the food. The pork baos were very sweet, I wasn't a big fan of the sauce. I wasn't expecting it, I was hoping for a more refreshing vibe. The fried rice was very plain and lacked a lot of flavor. The California roll was good, but it's very hard to get that one wrong. The spicy tuna roll was solid, but the shrimp tempura left a lot to be desired. I also wasn't a very big fan of the Mexican roll either. Overall nothing stood out to me, and I felt a bit bamboozled as this place has been on my list to try after several friends told me to try it.
