Day 1: My movers are quickly carrying all my furniture into my beautiful new condo. Disclaimer: Two of the toilets in my beautiful new condo aren't working very well. One of them asks to use my downstairs bathroom. Sure, why not? When they leave I notice some nuggets of treasure left behind in the toilet. CRAP! (no pun intended) I'm having my nearest and dearest friends over to celebrate my birthday tomorrow- I cannot have 2 malfunctioning toilets! Called Tom Bolan based on his wonderful reviews on yelp, he came right over same day, even though he was a tad under the weather. Replaced the flapper on the downstairs toilet- easy peasy. He goes upstairs and I hear a gasp. Apparently that toilet was all all kinds of messed up. He worked on it for a while, I came up to check on him a couple times. Due to the small size of the bathroom he had to twist and contort in what looked like various uncomfortable yoga poses in order to get to the base. Poor guy. He was a champ and fixed it though! And even though there was way more work involved than what he initially thought, the final bill was only a little more than the over the phone estimate. Tom is a personable guy who does great work. I called him on a Sunday night and got a call back the next morning around 8:30. He said he could be at mine by 10:00. He was about 30 minutes later than he said he would be, but he was on a job before mine and sometimes things come up. I didn't sweat it. Compared to other places who were charging $90/hour and adding on mileage (really? You're going to make me pay $20 for driving 15 miles?), Tom charged $65/hour. No hidden fees and no bullshit. He came in and saw the pipes of the 1929 apartment and sighed. He gave me a few options, based on pricing, thoroughness, and worst-case scenarios. I chose what I wanted and he was happy to oblige. I found Tom at Bolan through Yelp, and decided to give him a try after reading the positive reviews here. I had been in the construction trades myself for a long time and sometimes I just don't have time to do everything I'd like to get done around the house, so on occasion I will find a good contractor to get something done that is just not feasible for me to do. In this case, I needed an old water heater removed from a closet inside the house, and replaced with a Noritz NR98 tankless water heater in a new location on the outside of the house. This job required changing some plubming around, running some new plumbing through an inside wall chase, some minor electrical, new gas line, and removal of the old water heater and water / gas piping. However, finding an actual *good* contractor is ridiculous. There are so many "contractors" out there that will try to overcharge you, or, give you a decent price but leave you with questionable / shoddy work. And half of them won't even show up to even give you an estimate. I have had to re-do more than one contractor's work in the past, and that is never fun, so I am always very finicky with whom I select do to work on my house. I have to give Tom at Bolan Plumbing 5 stars and an AAAA+++ rating. Top notch work, good pricing, showed up when he said he would and knocked out the entire job in record time (one day!). Tom also installed everything to my specifications (which were rather specific) without hassle. The guy knows his stuff, and more importantly, he knows how to cater to fussy customers ;p Tom's work went over and above my expectations, and believe me I have high expectations :D. I'm finally getting around to writing a review about Bolan plumming. First up, the workers were very nice and they installed the tankless water heater fine. Unfortunately, while they were under the house, they crushed my AC duct which cause my AC to stop working because air couldn't cycle through it. Of course they denied that this happened but the AC was working fine before they arrived. Secondly, I was suppose to get a rebate and a slight adjustment to the water heater that they said they'll do, but Bolan never ever returned my call or email. I literally have been trying to contact them for months (about 6 months) and never received any return call or email. Very unprofessional. I definitely don't recommend these guys if you think you'll need help afterwards, because according to the other reviews as well it's one and done with guys. read more

Great work! He's quite detailed and will make sure the job gets done correctly. We had a pretty bad plumping repair job that a few other plumbers took a look at and didn't really want to do because they weren't experienced enough. Tom not only came in with a very reasonable quote for the repair, but he also included the repair of the wall and tile he'd have to demolish. The plumbing is fixed, the wall looks exactly the same as before the demolition, and the tiles look great. The only reason I took off one star is because he sometimes takes a few days to get back to you. But we got a small discount to make up for that. read more

I joined Yelp specifically to write this review, because Mr. Bolan doesn't seem to respond to anything else. He certainly hasn't responded to my phone calls or text messages in MONTHS. And I'm sick of giving him the benefit of the doubt. All I need him to do is tie down some pipes he replaced under my house, because they boom and rattle when my sprinkler system and washing machine use water. This, by his own admission, falls under his "work guarantee." To date, he has answered the phone exactly one time in the past 6 months (SIX MONTHS, PEOPLE!) and even admitted that he'd been avoiding me, begged forgiveness, apologized a hundred times, and promised to do better. (My guess is he only answered my call by accident.) Afterward, he did come by to confirm my piping issue, and guessed it would take 2 hours to fix. Ok, finally, right?... That was the last time he's responded to any of my attempts at contact. If it weren't for more current reviews, I'd wonder if he was even alive. How hard is it to respond to a phone call? a text message? I understand if Tom's busy. I even understand if I'm not a high priority because of current paying jobs. But if you're a professional, you have to tie up your loose ends and fulfill your work guarantees. Most of all, Mr. Bolan, you simply cannot ignore and avoid people for months on end. Tom had done my sewer line months back and was great. This time I called as my line was clogged from tree roots and well, no bueno. I called Sunday, left a VM. I did not expect him to be working Sundays but I wanted to be his first message monday morning as I needed this fixed, my master bathroom is all backed up. No call Monday morning, so I rang him at 10am-ish that morning, left a VM. Did not hear so I called him EOD to try to get him again. Left a message. Now its Tuesday, Called him again early this morning. Its now lunch time, no call so I decided to use another firm. He is a nice guy, does a great job but none of that matters if you have zero customer service and do not even call a client back who is begging you to charge me money. Used Bolan Plumbing once and he sent two guys out that quickly fixed a problem with my sink. I was so pleased with his work I wanted to line up additional plumbing problems for him to fix on a following visit. Called him to set up an appointment, talked to him and he said he'd call back-- never heard from him again. Figured he was busy, called him a second time a couple months later, still haven't heard from him. Great plumber I'm sure-- but that doesn't help if he doesn't show up to fix the problem. Get a secretary? update: 2.5.13 Nevermind. Tom's the motherfucking man and a stand-up guy-- oh yeah, his workers are good plumbers and they know what they're doing. After reading my negative review on yelp last night (goes to show you how handy a social media tool like yelp is-- no homo) Tom tried to get a hold of me through multiple avenues. I'm surprised the guy didn't hit me up on facebook. He tried calling. I gave him the cold shoulder and hit decline. He left a voicemail. I didn't bother to listen to it. Boom. He texts me. Dude was tenacious. I had a valid point as stated above and I courteously but brusquely explained that I booked another plumber for the work already. Then he comes back at me with that golden text message. He'll do the work for free as an apology for his previously poor performance. That hit me like lightning cuz I'm a red-feathered Indian and frugal as a motherfucker but I didn't let on. I hit him back: I'll let you know in the morning. This morning rolls around and I give Tom a call and he answers promptly. He happens to be in my hood-- just down the street supervising another plumbing job. He's at my house half an hour later with one of his plumbers by the name of Tino (a cheerful, professional fellow with colorful tattoos in fanciful, Old English). Tom and Tino go over my checklist of things to do: 1. Snake the laundry drainage pipe of fabric debris sludge so my new 4.7 cubic foot 14 cycle 424 hp LG washing machine can empty free and smooth like the flood plain of the Ganga. 2. Replace the frozen shutoff valves beneath the bathroom sink so I have options in the case of emergency. 3. Fix the knob in the shower which is inoperable and won't close off the hot water (ouch). 4. Snake the guest bathroom shower drain which is somehow full of copious amounts of both of my roommates's pubic matter. Manzillian amounts. Tom and Tino talk me through the process, parts, and labor of each plumbing challenge. Then Tino gets to work knocking them out with hitman-like efficiency and aplomb. Tom and I talk about his communication and scheduling issues. I suggest that he rope his wife in to be a secretary (a remark I now realize was completely sexist-- sorry ladies). Tom says she promised to help in the beginning but she was soon too busy making money in her own career. Damn. At that moment I thought to myself, this Tom is truly a wise man. He had to take off to fix another citizen's plumbing issues somewhere deep within Studio City. Tino finished all the jobs with ease. No charge. Tom is an honest plumber who knows his profession as well as the importance of customer service. He fixed the problem. I will call him and happily pay him for any of my plumbing needs in the future. I'll begin by saying that as a new home owner, one also finds themselves as newly broke. I've become a bit of a solicitous consumer when it comes to items of the home and or garden. Plus, when so many people tell you that you're gonna get ripped off when things first start breaking, I immediately want to prove them wrong. When Tom walked towards the front door he immediately noticed the leaky garden pipe that my fiancé tried to remedy with some black electrical tape. The most natural way to solve a plumbing issue if you ask me. Tom looked at the tape,, scratched his head in confusion, then looked down at the ground with closed eyes and shook his head with shame. This man was ashamed at our attempt at fixing a leak and I was thrilled about his response. The rest was simple. Tom fixed both my toilets with new parts he had already in his trunk. He showed me how to figure out how my pool pump worked and as for the leaky pipe in the front, that turned out to be the most complicated of the jobs. Tom quickly called his venders and offered me great options on how much, and how it should be fixed. He is a fair and smart business owner who knows his trade like no one I've ever seen.
