my dude, I love this place. they have great food at great prices, and I HAVE to share this: they make kheer (rice pudding, something I am obsessed with), and the first time I went there I found out it had pistachios, which would give me a massive allergic reaction, so I asked if they ever made it without pistachios, and the lovely lady there made me a special batch the next day that I could eat. this was like months ago. I continue to go there all the time but I don't always see her there (which is fine, everyone has different shifts), but today when I stopped in, she was there and she let me know that she had again made kheer without pistachios just in case. 10/10 food, 10/10 customer service, and just like 20/10 experience. Hubby and I are visiting Portland on our anniversary trip and had a craving for Indian food. Our first restaurant choice ended up falling through when we realized they only offered takeout. A quick search on Yelp landed us at Mezbaan Mahal, and I'm so glad it did! We found parking in a garage right down the street. We were greeted warmly upon entering and were allowed to choose whichever seat we wanted. Our server brought us menus and water (served in the cutest stainless steel, hammered metal cups). Their menu is quite substantial and offers things that we've never seen at an Indian restaurant before. It was really hard to decide because so many things sounded amazing!! We didn't want a ton of leftovers since we're staying in a hotel and won't be here for long, but boy were we tempted to order a bunch!! We decided on their 3-chicken combo appetizer, chicken korma (medium spice level), and garlic naan. The food was absolutely delicious. The 3-chicken combo was small portions of bone-in tandoori chicken, Afghani chicken, and chicken kabab all served on a ripping hot cast iron with veggies and a lemon wedge. We were pleasantly surprised to see their Marsala fries piled on top- those were so good!! The korma was creamy and delicious. The chicken in both our appetizer and the korma was heavy on the salt but was still very enjoyable. The naan was *perfect*. Service was very nice and attentive throughout. Food was delicious. Oh! Wow! Man, I've lived through so many years with snobby Portland Yelpers proclaiming their adoration of mediocre Mumbai style food served at buffets like Namaste... so it's a genuine pleasure to be able to say the Tandoori was every bit as good as the best I've had in Mumbai or Islamabad and equally better than the best high-end in the Indian neighborhoods of Singapore, which it most reminded. They do have a lunch buffet which I assume is good enough street food, but I highly recommend ordering a la carte. It's so worth it. I had the Tandoori chicken (bone in, duh, and yes, it is so much better when cooking at high temps like Tandoori that reduce all the collagen and sinew into melt in your mouth tender goodness!) and a Tandoori Roti to accompany. Some of the best Indian food I've ever had! The samosas were flaky and flavorful, a little spicy in a good way. The butter chicken was the best I've ever had. So flavorful and complex, with very fresh seasoned rice. I'm not a huge meat eater and the chicken melted in my mouth. My husband and I are now obsessed. With how amazing the butter chicken was I had to order Kheer to go, and it also exceeded my expectations, sweet but has such a fragrant flavor. We were driving around for Indian food and tried this spot out. We walked in and there was a person sleeping on the booth right when you enter. We still wanted to try the food because of how high the reviews were. We ordered chicken tikka Kebob. This is the first time in my life I've seen someone put French fries on top of this. The fries were cold and had no business to be on top of the kebobs. This dish is over $20 and should showcase the chicken, not cold fries. Chicken was dry needlessly to say. The sever was nice but clearly lost. We had the appetizer and left to go to dil se Indian restaurant. I don't understand how this is rated so high. The quality and cleanliness isn't there at ALL. This is amazing Indian food! I had the palak paneer and buttered naan and it's up there with any North Indian restaurant I've been to. I was in Portland for work and two colleagues and I came here shortly after 8pm. A larger group from our conference ended up joining us. The staff was incredibly accommodating despite the sudden large party. This new restaurant is a big change from the previous restaurant here. Different recipes. They still do lunch takeaway. Most of the customers were dining in with thali small metal bowls for each dish on a platter. Of course every family has their own recipes, and every eater has their preferences. It is nice to have an Indian restaurant or two downtown for lunch and dinner. I had lamb meatballs in a spicy red sauce, chicken vindaloo, and chana saag. The meatballs were well made and of solid texture. They included papadum with the meal. My concern with all the dishes is that they all were very salty. That comes from someone who seeks more salt than most. Salt can cover up all the natural flavors of the ingredients, those ingredients are the beauty of food of the subcontinent. read more

I didn't find my order in my apartment lobby until days later. They never notified me that it was downstairs in the lobby the same night. I stumbled upon it days later. I had to throw out the entire order because it had been there for days. In fact that night after I had ordered, they notified me that they had run out of ingredients, so I never thought that there would be an order to find. A local friend has been raving about this place for months so of course he took me here when I finally visited. The food was outstanding, both spicy hot and flavorful. The bengan bharta in particular was a standout, and I really enjoyed the bhel puri appetizer--light, crispy, and tangy. The dal makhani was some of the best I've had--usually it's just some beans in a nondescript sauce, but their take was rich and flavorful. The biryani was also a standout, not a dish I usually ordered but my friend insisted I try it. (We had like half a dozen dishes.) My husband ordered the lamb curry between medium spice and hot spice and his only complaint was it was not very spicy at all. We order 2 garlic naan which gave us plenty. I've been eating and loving Indian food as my favorite ethnic culinary choice since 1985. Portland finally has a world-class Indian restaurant! The black dal is stunning... it reminds me of Madhur Jaffrey's dal makhani at Dawat in NYC back in the 80's and 90's. The makai kofta (veggie balls in a rich cashew/tomato sauce) is also world class... the best I've had in Portland in the 32 years I've lived here. I also love the mushroom sag... a rare dish to find but also reminiscent of top-level NYC or London restaurants. The spinach is perfectly spiced--it looks beautifully deep green and it tastes amazing. The kabuli naan is stuffed with pistachio, cashews, coconut and raisins... just delightful! Even the mango lassi has the extra spin of cardamom to kick it in to the next level. All the small details seem perfectly executed at this restaurant... what an incredible dining experience! My highest possible recommendation after two in-person visits and a delightful delivery service meal for 8 of my co-workers a few weeks ago. Do yourself a favor -- if you like (or love!) Indian food, get to this restaurant as soon as possible. The prices are lower than Portland Indian food average rates because they are so new.
