They're like thin crackers that compliment the chutneys well. The green chutney was especially herbaceous and I liked that - The pork vindaloo was superb. The braised pork fell off the bones effortlessly, and the toasted rolls did a good job of absorbing the curry. I know vindaloo is considered a curry but this dish doesn't taste like a typical curry, it's more like a stew with braised pork in it Ambience: - The outdoor seating is huge, lots of space. We have been here twice now and we have figured out what is good and what isn't. The ambiance is super fun! It has an elevated dhaba feel to it. The walls are covered with random photos of people and families from the 1970s, signs that one might see in public places in India, a rickshaw meter at the entrance and carrom board tables. The whole place is run by non-Indians so you get a feeling that this is their interpretation of an Indian dhaba. We've ordered the chicken curry thali, the paneer curry, batata vada, pav bhaji, paneer Kati rolls, chicken salad bowl, crispy cauliflower, and the ginger lime soda over the course of our visits. The Thali comes with a dal, roti, rice, raita, salad and a sambar type curry. I have enjoyed the chicken curry way more than the paneer curry. The paneer curry is sweeter and more bland than I'd like. The chicken curry has a bigger flavor profile with a slight spicy kick. The crispy cauliflower was very good but I think this is a special so it may not always be available. The batata vada pav is actually very good but I really would like them to give us the chutney separately so that we decide how much chutney to add. As of now, the vada is smothered with chutneys, which hides the flavors of the vada. Also note that the buns are not like the Indian pav. They are burger buns. The pav bhaji has a tomato soup powder flavor to it, so it looks exactly like a pav bhaji should, but is overwhelmingly tomato flavored. The buns don't give you the same satisfaction that the buttered Indian pav gives. The Kati rolls are filled with more veggies, particularly the purple cabbage, than paneer or chicken. That is not how Kati rolls should be. Purple cabbage is not a thing in Indian food, so this felt like a salad rolls with the wrong veggies. The chicken bowl is actually decent so we liked this. The ginger lime soda is quite nice too. Overall, I would recommend this place for the decor, the vada, the Thali and their specials. read more

Really enjoyed this fancier version of Indian street food. We came on a Sunday around 7 and the line was to the door. They moved decently fast and the food came out quickly for how many people were there. We got the kati roll with paneer, the pork vindaloo and a vada pav. I liked that they have an area you can load up on chiles and sauces as well. Beware that the chiles pack some heat! But I really enjoyed them because otherwise the dishes don't come with any. The pork vindaloo was great! The flavor of the sauce was so rich, even though there wasn't any cream. Meat was tender and well seasoned. The vada pav is essentially a chickpea patty on a bun with a couple different chutneys. The patty was a little mushy for me but the flavor was wonderful. The kati roll was just ok for me. Good texture on everything but the whole wrap was lukewarm. I feel like they just put the paneer in a precooked wrap. Good flavors again, but just not as enjoyable execution. Some of the best food I've had outside India! This was plenty of food to share four ways and very affordable. We also enjoyed the Mango Lassi and the Thumbs Up curry spiced cola!! We also really liked this neighborhood. Ice cream next door for dessert, coffee and brunch nearby for the next morning. You could spend an entire weekend in this part of Portland. I had been CRAVING Indian food for a while and my boyfriend surprised me by taking me here! We came right as it opened for dinner so it was pretty empty, but I've seen that if you go later in the evening, it's sure to be packed! The inside is very spacious, beautifully decorated, and there's plenty of seating for parties of any size. We ordered the vada pav and paneer makhani thali meal with a side of chicken. What are people here talking about? "I have been to India X times" means people know Indian food? Woof. This place is the definition of appropriation. But thing is, I wouldn't mind if the food was actually decent. I was initially drawn to the place - like many places - bc of the decor. Then cross checking with Yelp. The pav bhaji was tasteless, and if you need to add salt to make a flavor pop - chances are, it was bland to begin with. 1 star for nice staff. 1 star for decor, while questionable and random, was kitschy comfortable. The guy that took our order was 5 stars for friendly. The food was great. The Kati roll was just right to split. And two had the Pork Vindaloo which they loved. We got the kati roll with chicken, pork vindaloo, and the chicken curry thali meal. They were quite busy on a Saturday evening, and food took about 15-20 minutes to come out. The thali meals include rice, sambar dal, raita, paratha, and green chutney. The pork vindaloo was served with buttered rolls. Everything was delicious! The chicken and pork were tender and well-seasoned. I would have preferred it to be a tad spicier, but nonetheless, it was pure comfort. The raita (yogurt sauce) was a refreshing contrast to the curries, and the green chutney was citrusy and herby. The kati roll was filled with vegetables, egg, chicken, and pickled onions. It was like an Indian burrito that I didn't know I needed in my life. The parantha was chewy, tangy, and not too thick. It held everything together well. First, the ambience - they have plenty of outdoor and indoor seating and there's something nice about the old school charm that the Indian movie posters on the wall create. The cocktails all have an Indian twist to them - and they're delicious! The vada pav, and the chicken curry are terrific - very flavorful with just the right amount of spice! I've eaten at a lot of places in Portland, and this is one I keep coming back to again and again. The thali plate is a go-to, and great for sharing. It's a lot of good at a very reasonable price. My favorite part? The SAUCES. I could bathe in those chutneys, let me tell you. Everything is fresh, complex, and unique. Haven't tried anything I haven't liked. This was an Indian restaurant that I went to during my trip to Portland (pre-Covid) since it was pretty well-rated and I wanted to try a variety of cuisines while I was in the city. The interior is relatively spacious, and I liked how they played various old-school Indian films on the projector so you could watch it while you eat. The interior also had a cozy vibe to it, and it didn't take us too long to get seated. For the food, we ordered the Bhel Puri, Mango Lassi, and one of the curries. I really enjoyed the Mango Lassi, as it was thick and had a lot of the fresh mango flavor to it. The Bhel Puri was also a nice dish to have, since it had a crunchy texture that went very well with the sauce that it came with. The chicken curry came with a few different sauces and was very flavorful! The savory aspects of it went well with the rice and roti that it came with, both of which were made well. What a great place! The decorations are super fun, they have a nice patio and all our favorite chaats on their menu. We throughly enjoyed our meal and will for sure be back. They also have a number of different beers on tap and a nice selection of non-alcoholic drinks (my fiancé loved their iced chai). If you have not tried Indian street food, you must give Bollywood Theatre a try! Best to come with a group so you can order a variety of items from the small menu and try everything. For me, the explosion of flavors and complexity of spices keep me coming back for more! There just isn't anything like this food in Portland. We always get the Kati roll, a roti wrapped around tender pieces of chicken with crunchy cabbage for a mix of textures. The flavorful chutney is both sweet and hot; I add extra chiles as I like heat. The Paneer Makhani is soooo good! They make the paneer (cheese) in house and it's simmered in a rich & creamy tomato and cashew curry which gives It a buttery flavor. It's served with rice but definitely get a side of paratha (flatbread) to soak up all that delicious sauce. They've reduced the menu since the pandemic and man, I miss the buttered buns topped with slow roasted lamb. They still have Vada Pav which is a spicy potato dumpling that is dipped in chickpea batter and deep fried. The dumpling is served on a buttered roll with an assortment of chutneys. They are good, but I definitely prefer the lamb! I've never been a huge fan of carbs on carbs which is why I prefer my curries without potatoes if I'm serving over rice, but that's just me. For $5.50, definitely order a few for the table and decide for yourself. This location is much larger than the original NE Alberta location which means less lines, always a good thing! Portions are small and so you do have to order quite a bit to fill up, especially if you are here for dinner. So the bill does add up, which is why I'm deducting a star. read more

I will be the first to admit that I've never been a huge fan of Indian food. I'm not much of a curry person, or at least the heavily spiced versions that you get at these restaurants. Anyways, I've been to this location on a few occasions and trying different things. The latest, finally made me realize that I should finally write something up. Kerala Fried chicken and basmati rice. Who would think that fried chicken at an Indian restaurant would be such a joy to eat? Not me, for one, but I tried it and will rave about it for a while. Cumin, coriander and salty goodness are the star flavors of the chicken. It came with a tomato raisin chutney that I actually mixed in with the rice and made that so much more fantastic. The chicken was crunchy and so flavorful. Unreal. The sweetness of the chutney, along with the spiced rice had a great balance. Sweet one bite, salty tang, the next. I won't say that I enjoy all Indian food, mainly because this is the only place I've been to a number of times, but I'm willing to try new things. Who knows what 2020 will offer on that front. The paneer and chicken dish were good, but just didn't have enough flavor for me. I think it's because I like stronger spiced Indian food. I like the strong curries but the sauces here were just a tad bit light for me. If you prefer lighter seasoned curries then this will be a great place for you. Very disappointing experience getting takeout from this Indian restaurant. It had good reviews hence why I decided to order from them but the quality and quantity of food was very low. I ordered Paneer Makhani because I love buttery, creamy curries and I love paneer but once it got to me, there was barely any food! It wasn't even filled up properly. It covered like 1/4 of the container... for the price I paid, I would have preferred the container to be at least half to 3/4 full. Seems very greedy of the restaurant... Indian food is all about being generous. That's part of the culture. Indians are all about hospitality. This restaurant is definitely not honoring the culture. They seem to only care about profit and getting as much money as they can, while providing as little food as possible. Such a shame! The flavor wasn't bad at all but I had hardly any food in my container so I couldn't even give you a proper run down of the flavor because it was finished before I even started tasting anything. I also ordered some dal and it came with a very watery consistency.... I don't know what was up with that. It looked like yellow water. Overall, a very sad, disappointing meal. So i have been a fan of Bollywood Theater for years. However, post the pandemic, their quality has degraded considerably. It is no longer the place I crave to eat during every trip to Portland. We ordered togo and our staple - kathi roll (chicken - they used to serve mutton kathi rolls which were delicious a couple of years ago), vada pav & pav bhaji. The chicken kathi rolls were good but nothing compared to the mutton kathi rolls. The spices were good but my kathi rolls had more pickled cabbage than chicken. The few pieces of chicken I got did have good flavors but overall the flavor was good not great. The vada pav was good. Again the size of the pav does not make it authentic and this dish is a hit and miss but I love their chutneys that just add additional flavors to the mini vada pavs. The pav bhaji - this was a disaster. We literally got such a small bowl of pav bhaji not enough to eat even one pav forget about 2 pavs that they serve with the dish. You do charge full price and these portions are ridiculous. The pav bhaji tasted nothing like street pav bhaji. Overall I did not find it value for money. Infact you pay alot for those small not so tasty portions. The ambience of this place is good. But unfortunately the food is not the same and sadly I am going to avoid this place in the future.
