All the great dishes you'd want from an Indian restaurant. We went there for dinner on Tuesday night and ordered several dishes and pakora which is gluten free. The saag paneer, korma and aloo gobhi were delicious. The service was friendly and he brought us complimentary papadam. We had a table by the window which helped with the ambience. Friends! You need to jump on this place. The only time I've had their food before was delivery during the pandemic. It was very good. Finally, a friend and I went in person. The interior was very warm, inviting and attractive. The gentleman running the place was very friendly, personable and efficient. Bathrooms were very clean. The food was all great, but the star of the show was the Aloo Tikki Chaat, the menu description of two potato patties doesn't do it justice. It was a flavor bomb. It comes with mint chutney, tamarind chutney and raita. This dish also comes with a side of chana masala, which is a chickpea stew. The sauces added even more flavor and the chana masala was divine. Although it's an appetizer, it's pretty big. It could be a full meal for one person or you could add a couple of sides and it would work for two. We decided to split the chicken curry and the Daal Mah, another bean stew. The chicken curry was beyond, the chicken was so tender. The Daal was also quite good and both came with rice. We ordered mild and next time I would go up one level on the spiciness, it would add some oomph to the flavor. But we still really enjoyed both dishes. India Oven is our absolute favorite spot for Indian cuisine in Portland and honestly, one of our favorite restaurants, period. It's warm, welcoming, and truly the best place to take your family. Even our kids, who are usually picky eaters, fell in love with the food and that's saying something! We always start with the onion bhaji, perfectly crispy and flavorful. The garlic naan is a must-have, soft and fresh with just the right amount of softness and garlic. Our go-to main dishes are the chicken tikka masala (medium spice - so flavorful with a creamy, rich sauce and doesn't taste like over-baring Cyan Pepper like most Indian restaurants) and the tandoori chicken. The tandoori is next-level, seasoned to perfection and so tender it melts in your mouth. The staff are kind and attentive, and the whole atmosphere feels calm and family-friendly. Good place! We had a pretty good spread of food, and the drink options were fun (got to try a beer I'd never had, which is nice). Not the BEST Indian food I've ever had, but really solid. They're still really hard core with the covid protocols, but I wouldn't say that detracted from the experience much, just a little more DIY in terms of silverware and table amenities. When we moved to Portland 2 years ago we were eager to find our go to restaurants in every cuisine we loved, and unfortunately it took COVID happening for us to find India Oven I know the reviews mention customer service complaints but on many occasions I've been greeted by a lovely server/ cashier who is very kind and upbeat. Yes it can take up to an hour sometimes, but they don't have full kitchen staff. I often see only one person in the kitchen making everyone to order!... maybe all family run? (If they estimate your pick up time, go @ the later option) The food is delicious and has plenty of pescatarian options too. One of the better veggie samosas I've had! read more

Horrible experience from the moment we stepped in the restaurant. I don't even think we were acknowledged upon entering. Once we made contact with someone, they were not very welcoming. Service was lackluster at best. The food we ordered was quite bland, especially when one thinks of Indian food to be an experience in exotic spices and flavors. 2 out of the 3 of us felt ill later in the evening as well, which we definitely attributed to the food from here. It definitely wasn't the cleanest of places and I don't think they know how to handle food if 2/3 of our party got sick afterwards. Definitely will not be returning to this restaurant. read more

We are Indians and I have never ever tasted Indian food this bad. Everything that I ate there was really bad. No customer service. We had to serve ourselves water and get our own utensils. Not moneys worth. The person who took our order was absolutely rude and when asked how long the food is going to take he just answered rudely. I wouldn't recommend anyone to go here. One person taking the order and one person cooking and one person washing the dishes. I have never been to a restaurant that it was this bad. read more

My brother's going to be so jealous if I tell him that I got dinner here. When he moved from Los Angeles to Portland, he lived around here somewhere in the Belmont District. Or his friends did. Something like that. I remember that he brought me here for the first time and I loved the wild salmon baked in the clay oven. They don't have salmon on the menu any longer. Very disappointing. I remember visiting him in 2013 and surprising him! Just showed up at his house straight from the airport and made a stop here before that...showed up with his favorite meal from India Oven. His jaw dropped when he got home from work and saw me sitting on his front porch! Ha! The look of surprise on his face!! I love coming here because it always brings back happy memories of dining with family. I was born and raised in India, literally all of my blood relatives are still in India, and I visit home 2-3 times a year. Even when I'm in the US I travel around the country a lot and I make it a point to eat Indian food wherever I go. And India Oven taste is hard to beat! I can't speak to spice as we got all mild for the kids, but we devoured it all. Lassis were good, their homemade lemonade was delightful, portions were good to dine in. A brief history of India Oven: back in the day, Indian food aficionados would make the trek to India Oven in a former church in Gresham for the best Indian food dining experience. The foods was wonderful, especially the tandoris, the atmosphere was great, the service very good, and the owner was always around to ask how your food was. And as it would take an act of god to get me to go to Gresham for anything, it's clear that this was truly superior dining. As you might imagine, Gresham was not and is not the culinary capital of the world, so after several lean years India Oven moved to the former Masonic building at 39th and Hawthorne in PDX. The owner said that he did more business in two weeks in Portland than in two years in Gresham. My wife and I ate at the Hawthorne location a few times but the food seemed to be a shadow of its former self and the atmosphere was less than optimal. So now, after seven years on Hawthorne, India Oven is on Belmont in a very new and modern space, which is very light, clean, and open. A big change from the claustrophobia of the Hawthorne digs. And how's the food? We started with onion naan and samosas. The naan was very very good, right out of the oven with lots of onion and cilantro, cooked perfectly. Samosas were pronounced "a bit spicy." Next up with Chicken Tikka and Chicken Biryani. I found the Biryani tasty but couldn't help thinking about Rice-a-roni, which unfortunately my wife verbalized and I was stuck with it. I'd say it was very good initially but I wasn't inspired to keep eating. Same story with the Tikka, good but just good. Because of what India Oven used to be and the great times we had there in the Gresham restaurant, I really want to like India Oven. But based on my experience there, I'd call it "uninspired" and "adequate." There is better Indian food in the metro area (lots in Beaverton and Hillsboro). And...I'll bet it's difficult as all heck to cook Indian food for Americans, especially in the Whitesylvania that is Belmont/Hawthorne. It can't be real Indian food, it can't be bland, it can't be spicy. read more

Now they're right in our old neighborhood, a block, a BLOCK, from our old house...and we're not! NO FAIR. But we had dinner there not long ago, and it's still so yummy. Give it a try. Try the goat. Seriously. I am not usually a fan of goat curry, but my dining partner is, so I gave it a try. The goat is tender and flavorful served in a rich sauce. Truly delicious, moist, and a fantastic dish. Also, try the Mixed Vegetables! The vegetables maintain their integrity while also blending beautifully for a really solid dish. The naan is a bit drier than I like, but that is personal preference. Other favorites: Rogan Josh, Chicken Tikka, and the Veggie Samosas. As a bonus, this is a family run restaurant and we have repeatedly had the best conversations with various family members, where we have learned about the origin of dishes and a bit about their home town in northern India.
