Would recommend to try it once because the food is good but the overall experience was subpar given the amount you spend. I would not return. Booked for a birthday party of 13, where at least 5 people wanted to order the suckling pig. We were told there was only 1 left at 6:30PM. I had in fact called a week before to inquire on whether we should pre-order due to the large number. They said don't worry about it. Well we were only able to order 1. Then 3 other items on the menu were already sold out. I was told that it was due to restaurant week but with a birthday party this big, would've been considerate of them to inform me, especially since I checked in with Bolo at least 3 times before. We were never told about restaurant week either, otherwise I would've booked another day. Just as an FYI: cocktails are $17-18, mocktails are $12, one cup of Americano is $12, everything felt higher than they should be. It's also a $5 per SLICE cake cutting fee, but you have the option to cut it yourself. The fact that they set these prices leaves a bad taste in your mouth. They don't inform you of the 3% credit card surcharge either. Service was also very, very slow. Half our table didn't receive their drink orders until 20 minutes later. Entrees came in at a slow crawl, which we still noticed despite everyone enjoying the company of our friends. Tl;dr only go once for some of the appetizers and entrees (hopefully they are available) but be aware that the prices are unnecessarily high and they don't disclose the 3% credit card surcharge. read more

We went on a Friday evening, the place was packed. We didn't have reservations but luckily got two seats at the bar as soon as we reached. The bar area is ok but the decor next to the stairs and the upstairs is much more beautiful. Ordered two drinks: Piña Colada and Beehive. Both were just average: too much foam and taste was quite bland to be honest. We got the Ecuadorian Shrimp ceviche which was good but could do with a little more flavor. The Maduros was actually good: the savoriness of queso fresco went really well with the sweetness of the plantains. For dessert, we got the Flan de Queso and Coco-Piña and I have to say that the latter was the highlight of our entire dinner. That dessert is just so good - perfect amount of sweet, the coconut cake paired with the vanilla ice cream was delicious! For starters we had the ceviche tasting of three and chose the Tuna con COCO, Ecuadorian Shrimp and the Red Snapper Nikkei. They all were pretty good but I particularly really enjoyed the snapper. The trio was a great option to sample more than one and they all are very different in flavors. Next we had the Pulpo and Vieiras Pinchos. Bit were cooked perfectly and so moist. They both came when two sauce choices. I preferred the lighter sauce with the scallops and the lighter Mayo type of sauce with the octopus. Lastly we had the Bacalaitos and the Whole Red Snapper. This is kind of where things went to eh...ok. The Bacalaitos is like tuna salad with a soft tostado. It's good, but more like an appetizer. I don't think what it is matches the cost. The snapper was just disappointing. It was a bit flavorless and needed some seasoning and salt. The rice that came with the fish was also pretty basic. The complimentary Mofongo was good and a nice starter and my Mojito was very tasty. The restaurant is a bit noisy and our waiter was a bit disorganized. He had to ask us to repeat things and come back to make sure he heard what we asked for. read more

Great ambiance and drinks but only decent food. We visited Bolo during restaurant week on a Saturday night, and it was packed. The restaurant is divided into two floors and both have fun decorations. Music from Latin America played throughout our visit, and the walls were decorated with plants, portraiture, and pottery. I ordered the playa rosada to drink, the cauliflower cuchifrito as a starter, the sweet plantain canoas as a main, and the templeque for dessert. The playa rosada was tasty with a good mix of fruity flavors. The cauliflower cuchifrito had a flavorful breading and was paired with a tasty dipping sauce. The canoas were fine but a bit on the bland side. The templeque was not overly sweet and had a mild flavor. Overall, I would recommend Bolo for the ambiance, but I think the quality of the their menu items is a bit inconsistent. read more

My friend and I had dinner at Bolo this past Saturday when we were in Philly for the weekend. We had picked Bolo for our dinner, because the menu had so many different options/specials (a la carte, suckling pig dinner (65pp), and prix fixe (55pp). We shared a bunch of things: tasting of three ceviches (salmon passion, tuna con coco, and snapper nikkei); octopus skewer; scallop skewer; bacalaitos (cod fish fritters, blue crab salad, and horseradish); chicken pastelillos (chicken ropa vieja with cacucha aioli); Cuban bean dumplings (steamed dumplings with recaito-dashi and chili crunch); and flan con queso with cream cheese custard candied papayo, and mint). Some of the dishes were good, but some weren't our favorites. I loved the tuna con coco ceviche, but the other two didn't seem very balanced. The skewers were pretty good, but I didn't always think the sauces served with them worked (thick, mayo sauces on seafood). The flan was alright - I enjoyed the candied papaya and mint on the dish. My friend wasn't crazy about how pureed the bean filling was in the Cuban bean dumplings, but I would say that the snack dishes were our favorites of the night. I had a cocktail that was fun but I never could have had more than one (way too sweet), but I appreciated that they offer N/A drinks for guests who want something but don't want to have alcohol. The service was really great, the highlight of our meal. And the restaurant had good vibes and ambiance - lively, fun. We came to check out this new restaurant and overall I'll say service and ambiance were a hit, but food missed the mark. Service was very attentive- from both our server, as well as the bussers that came by several times to clear our table at appropriate times. Our server gave suggestions on how she's seen groups of 4 order. We opted to share the Tasting of 3 ceviches, 2 pinchos, 2 entrees, and the goat cheese bread which came to $210 between the 4 of us. I'm not sure about the rest of my party - but I definitely did not leave full. The complimentary appetizer was a great way to start our meal. It was a thoughtful, beautifully presented appetizer with the right amount of acid to open up your appetite! The ceviche tasting was only OK, imo. The sauces were a bit watery/soupy. And although we asked our server about the portion size and if it was enough to split between us 4, I don't think it ended up being a great thing to share , especially the salmon. There were 2 large pieces that we had to cut into pieces to try to share. The big eye tuna was my favorite one with the coconut salsa. The red snapper didn't taste enough like "ceviche" to me, as it was much more Asian soy/garlic flavors. I did enjoy the salmon, but it wasn't presented in a way that was easy to share amongst 4 persons. The goat cheese bread was simple, but delicious. My only criticism is that a slightly toasted bread may have brought better texture, as it was soft, with soft cheese, soft honey, and soft-ish dates. Between the two entrees, I was really excited to try the Caldo Santo, as I love a good hearty seafood soup/stew. It came with 1 bowl of rice between the 2 entrees. We asked our server, as she stated each entree came with 2 bowls. She explained that they combine the four portions into one bowl. Here is one major point of criticism for my experience. The Caldo Santo was extremely salty. The fish was perfectly cooked, but the salt was ruining the dish for me unfortunately. Now, if it was served with generous amounts of rice meant to soak up all that flavor - I think it would have worked. The whole red snapper was one of the better executed dishes of the night. It was cooked well, I enjoyed the sauce, good presentation, and the texture of the vegetable medley was wonderful. Unfortunately, I had to pick out scales from my mouth several times while eating , wasn't scaled or cleaned perfectly. I think Bolo has potential. I wish them great success. read more

Bolo transports you from the gritty streets of Philly to a beautiful oasis of flowing drinks and vibrant flavors. We visited on a gloomy, rainy day, and I felt like I was in paradise. We arrived shortly after opening, so the place was pretty empty. The downstairs bar area is dark and tropical. We headed upstairs for dining, which was warmly lit and very chic. The staff at Bolo is fantastic. Our server was amazing, and we even had a visit from the chef. If you come here for anything, it has to be the Half Chicken. It's perfect for 2-3 people, depending on the sides or apps you order alongside. The Half Chicken is crispy, fried, and spiced to perfection. We added a side of Yuca Brava, a delicious potato-like starch, that was a great accompaniment to the chicken. I mean the chicken is deep fried in PORK LARD, so it HAS to be good, right? I didn't find it spicy at all, so it's a good sharing option, and, in my opinion, the star of Bolo. We also ordered the Bacalaitos, a fried cod fish fritter with a fun crab salad accompaniment, and the Oxtail Croquettes, served with bone marrow. The flavors were rich and addicting. To wash down our tasty bites, we each ordered the El Cano - a tequila, mezcal, pineapple creation. There was just enough smoke from the mezcal to compliment the fruit. Some things to note about Bolo. Parking in this area can be a crapshoot. Also, we ate upstairs in what appeared to be the main dining area, and I did not note an elevator, so unsure what accommodations are available for mobility needs - I would call ahead to inquire. I definitely recommend reservations! Finally, don't forget your leftovers, like I did. I'm still mourning my uneaten pieces of the Half Chicken. This is a phenomenal place! The story of the owner and his food is brilliantly showcased in the restaurant and through the dishes. I've never had any dishes like these before and the flavors and quality is nothing like I've ever tasted, in a wonderful way! Our server Peyton was phenomenal in recommending dishes, answering questions, sharing the history of the restaurant, and chatting with us. We tried the ceviche which was a first for me and I loved it, especially the mussels one and the tuna coconut one. Also the scallops which were a special by Chef Mike are to die for! I really like that there is a new Latin American restaurant in Philly. Bolo really brings me out of Philly with the Latin music and ambience. The decor is really nice, it gives a good vibe. Bolo is a nice place for a date at night. I love that the ceiling has skylights. As for the food, it's mostly tapas with small plates. It's nice to taste different things on the menu. Most of the food is seafood and there are very few meat options. The mixed drinks are good. The dessert menu has interesting selections. We were intrigued by the Carajillo with amaretto, cognac, brazilian espresso, and evaporated milk. The service was good. Attentive. The potata fritters were delicious. They're a potato dumpling with seafood and aioli sauce. It's something different that I haven't had before. We really liked the different sauces that came with the dishes. Very unique and tasty. I loved the scallops and octopus skewers tender. We really liked them. Pretty much everything we ordered tasted good. Coco cake dessert was delicious. P.S. Enjoyed our dinner at Bolo, Philadelphia's newest Latin American dining room and rum bar. Bolo is a beautiful space with a front bar open to the sidewalk (bar stools lining the sidewalk), tiled floors, and upstairs plentiful skylights and greenery. Service was attentive, though they did keep trying to take dishes we were still working on. After starting with the plantain/taro root chips and plantain mash/salsa, which had a lovely kick, the three of us shared two Cuchifritos (fried foods): the Chicken Ropa Vieja Empanadas (smoked paprika braised chicken thighs, crema, lime) and Manchego Croquetas (manchego cheese fritters, romesco). The empanadas were delicious as was the dipping sauce provided with the fritters--the fritters themselves needed a bit more texture and seasoning to have more impact. We wound up ordering three Platillos (main dishes), which were a bit pricey for the size: two wanted the Caldo Santo (black cod, cockles, scallops, crab, coconut-root vegetable holy broth) and one the Vaca Frita (creekstone farms skirt steak, black beans, sweet plantains, tomato escabeche). The steak was a bit tough, the black beans a bit salty, and the escabeche a bit sour, but the plantains were delicious. The dishes came with a shared pot of rice, which had a nice nutty/buttery flavor, but could have been hotter and come with a serving spoon. Because we were celebrating a birthday, Chef Fuentes sent a delicious looking order of buñuelos to the table--drizzled with caramel and dusted with powdered sugar. We were a big party and tried almost everything on the menu, though it's not photographed because we just had such a great time that we forgot to take all the pictures. Everything was delicious, I was very impressed with the food as well as the drinks. The service was great as well. Our server was very passionate about the menu and the food. I was very excited to go considering their James beard nomination and overall buzz. Upon entering, the ambience is definitely fun, upscale, and fresh. It was very easy to find a seat for happy hour at the bar, and the bartender was very warm and attentive. The cocktails were perfection. I got a classic mojito that was refreshing and not too sweet. My friend ordered a pina colada that was incredible (no shaved ice action here). The ceviche shooters and mofungo were out of this world delicious. Everything was very affordable to my surprise! I was looking for a place to celebrate National Rum Day, even though I was a day late, and ended up at Bolo Rum Bar for Happy Hour. I liked it there so much that I ended up going again the very next week, so this review will encompass two happy hours. To start off, they make a perfect mojito in various flavors. Both strong and very tasty. You won't find a better one anywhere else. I ordered more mojitos than I want to admit. For food, I had various pinchos (skewers) and chuchifritos (fried food). Between my visits I had the Bacalaitos (cod fish fritters, horseradish, blue crab salad), manchego croquetas, lamb empanadillas, gamba y chorizo (shrimp & chorizo), vieras, and pescado. Everything I tried was delicious. The standout star was the Bacalaitos. I ordered it on both of my visits. You will have to take a look at my picture of it. But you basically eat the crab salad on the fritters. I haven't had anything quite like it and I loved it. If you like cheese you can't go wrong with the manchego croquetas. The shrimp and chorizo was my favorite pincho. But the scallops one was right up there too. I could probably just throw a dart at the menu and any one it lands on would be awesome. I did try a dessert as well. I don't remember the name of it, but it was similar to a beignet. It was good, but next time I would probably just stuff myself with more pinchos instead. Bolo is a 5 star addition to the Rittenhouse Square area. Service was good as well. The bartenders were knowledgeable and friendly. I do plan to go back and see them again. I was so so excited to try this place with some Yelp elite friends I've been eyeing their Instagram awhile and loved the Puerto Rico vibes and food. The atmosphere of the restaurant was warm and inviting. Very decorative and open bright spaces for dining. We sat upstairs at a small table near the back of the restaurant. Our waitress announced that they will serving the full menu tonight and gave us suggestions about menu items. Instead of one of the tastings we decided to try a bunch of each category so we could do our own tour. The reason why we didn't do the tastings is because the full table would have to participate and we didn't have choices of what would come out. We decided to do the three Ceviches which included: tuna, salmon and red snapper. All had distinct flavors. The tuna with the coconut milk was the best out of the three. We wished there were more fish compared to the sauces (ratios were off). The plantains chips served with the ceviche was a nice touch. We got two different skewers to try: the octopus and the mahi mahi. Both came with different sauces. Both were also overcooked and the octopus was rubbery. Both needed a touch more seasoning. For big plates we ordered the whole red snapper and the popular caldo Santo (seafood broth dish). The red snapper had decent flavor while the caldo Santo had very salty broth and not a lot of seafood. Each dish came with a serving of white rice. When they brought the one small plate of rice we asked oh I thought both came with rice? The waitress explained they combined both portions of rice and served it to us. Not a lot for 4 people especially if the dishes need the rice to soak up the dish. Overall it was just an okay experience. The dishes were beautiful for pictures like the restaurant, the service as attentive and friendly but the food def. Needs some work. Since Bolo has only been open for about a month there is always room for improvement! Also the food is very pricey for what you get which is fine if it's super tasty food but this food def. Bolo is underrated! They had live music and upstairs seating with a skylight, very cute. Food-wise, the chicken rice was a standout. Amazing generous portion of crispy juicy roast chicken over yellow rice mixed with chicken and cheese. I ordered the suckling pig and I'm not the biggest fan of the concept: it's a roll of mixed pork cuts that's been roasted all around -- it's just drier and over crisped in my opinion than a regular cut of roast pig, but it was still a good size and pretty good. The rice, beans, plantains and mofongo that came with it though were generous, and we especially really liked the mofongo, which had a light citrusy coconut flavor and a texture halfway between grits and cornbread, really unique. We also got the roast pork skewer and that pork was very soft and fatty, practically falling off the skewer, which is pretty indulgent, and came with two sauces and bread. Finally we got a starter salad that included a fun refreshing blend of cold peas and coconut milk. Bolo is a real standout with good sized portions (great to share in my opinion) and fun tropical flavors. Service is fantastic as well. Highly recommend! read more

We came to check out this new restaurant on a Thursday evening. Between the open front area and the gorgeous upstairs, this place has great vibes for ambiance. The service was very attentive and we were given several helpful recommendations although some were better than others in the end. I started with a Don Johnny cocktail which was not what I expected, which may have been my fault. I was told it had a vinegar base but didn't expect it to taste so much like vinegar. Not for me next time. There was a complimentary plantain dip on the table that was fun to try. We were immediately drawn to the ceviche options and wound up trying 3 of the four in a combination app. All three ceviches were a hit for me. The other winner was the goat cheese, honey and dates dip that was fantastic for sharing. Unfortunately the skewers that we ordered were a miss. The pulpo (octopus) and pescado (mahi) were both quite overcooked and thus not all that enjoyable. For the main course we had the Caldo Santo which was so salty that it was rather unpleasant. We were given a small portion of rice to share and really needed at least twice the amount to cut the salt and fill out the dish. The whole red snapper though was fantastic both in flavor and texture. In the end, the meal was quite expensive ($40 each before drinks) to not be thrilled with the dishes. I would give it 3.5 stars if the option were available. They are new and just starting out so if the dishes get a little more dialed in, this could easily become 4 stars or higher. read more

Really cute and authentic Cuban restaurant on the quiet part of Sansom in CC. The second floor of the dining room is bright and airy and lovely. The first floor is mostly the bar, with a little bit of seating in the back. During the summer, they also open the front of the restaurant and create a partially indoor/partially outdoor bar seating area that's super cute. All of the food that I had was very nice, but the standout was definitely the selection of ceviches. Traditional ceviches, twists on ceviches, ceviche combinations that I've never had. I had their restaurant week special which was a 3-course dinner. My favorite bite was the shrimp ceviche and the beignets. Everything was very flavorful and the service was very good with the waiter being flexible with accommodations, which I appreciated. The regular priced items seem to be a bit pricey given the portion size and what is being served so I'm not sure the value matches what you get but everything does taste good! read more

Amazing restaraunt ! My friend and I wanted to catch up and decided on this restaraunt. The ambiance is really cute and intimate. I think it would be perfect for a date night. The concept and vision behind Bolo means well but is poorly executed. I'll start off with the decor and interior, it's absolutely stunning and will transport you to somewhere in Latin America. The bar entrance has seating outside into the restaurant. The floor has various color iterations. The walls are shelved with antique cooking equipment and various paintings. The wooden staircases will take you to a floor of widespread seating with sunlight permeating through the glass roof. The menu seems promising as there is food for all dietary specifications. It's broken down by ceviches, fried foods, vegetables, mains, snacks and skewers, There are two options from the tasting menu, our group opted out of it since the chef will randomly select the items for the menu. Ceviches - We tried the tasting of three ceviches. The Tuna con Coco was my favorite and consisted of bigeye tuna, young coconut salsa, cilantro. It's more on the sweet side. The Salmon Tradito consisted of scottish salmon, aji amarillo, passion fruit, parsley. It was my least favorite. It was extremely water and the chunks of passion fruit were off putting. The salmon was also one big piece, it was hard to cut up and share with everyone. The Red Snapper Nikkei was made of lemongrass, soy sauce, serrano chillies, topped w/ fried garlic and sesame oil. It was super spicy! It had more of an Asian flare, naturally, I was not expecting that. I am not that knowledgeable to know if it's true to Latin American cuisine. It would have been helpful to have spoons to scoop up the ceviche. The ceviches were also very watery. It seemed like it was a soup base with items thrown on top as a garnish. Ceviches are usually items with liquid drizzled over it as a soaking component. Pan con Queso -It was comprised of whipped goat cheese, rosemary honey, dates and olive oil, we asked for no bacon. You can't go wrong with this dish, it's familiar favorites. That being said, nothing was special of it. I didn't taste the rosemary in the honey, the goat cheese was average. Pinchos (skewers), the Pescado is the Mahi Mahi, way over cooked, the fish was dry and the sauces couldn't revive it. We also got the Pulpo which is the octopus. I have never had that overcooked of octopus in my life. The smaller pieces were so hard to chew. Four of us shared two main dishes. Both dishes came with rice but the four us had to share one cup and a half cooked white plain rice amongst two dishes. It's just plain rice, why be miser about it? Whole Red Snapper is broiled caribbean snapper, cachucha pepper brulee, spring time sancocho, chives. Lacked salt! I mean it seemed like the chef forgot to add salt. I really like the asparagus, peas and beans that came with it though. The veggies had a crunch to them. On the contrary...the Caldo Santo which is black cod, clams, scallops, crab, in a coconut-root vegetable holy broth was so salty! I think they knocked off the entire Morton Salt cylinder into this pot. It was inedible alone. We had to mix it with the very little rice we had and the other main dish. If the dish is truly meant to be salty so that the rice can balance it out...give more rice! We were disappointed with the flavors, not the ingredients and didn't want to risk it with dessert. Really good experience. The place is beautiful, lively, and well themed. The food and drinks taste very good, but are definitely pricey for the portion size. Service is very good here and accommodating and attentive. I would recommend the vaca frita skirt steak main, the yucca wedges/tots, and the pork belly skewer. read more

Yelp is prompting me to discuss "food, service and ambiance." Well, all of those things are amazing at Bolo, and I will also add how great the specially created cocktails at the rum bar are, as well. The entire experience tops pretty much every comparable restaurant I've tried in Philly. The chef is from Puerto Rico and has traveled a lot, so he's incorporated both what he learned about cooking growing up in PR and from his experiences with local cuisine around the world. We tried some really unique dishes, like hearts of palm skewers. We honestly couldn't tell the difference between them and the scallops we ordered..that's how soft and buttery they were. If you love seafood, Bolo has some of the best I've ever had. All with a Latin American flair in terms of sauces and spices. I fell in love with a lemon aoli accompaniment that tastes like summer. Everything we ordered was so fresh and delicious, and we enjoyed it in a romantic environment which was perfect for me and my boyfriend's special date! I think they might be offering brunch soon.
