We saw the prices and expected to be dazzled by our experience. Be prepared to pay $26 for 8 ounces of margarita, if you want a Cadillac margarita. You will have to have the menu explained to you as it is nothing like one would normally find in a southwestern Mexican restaurant. This is the first time in my 70-year-old life that a Mexican restaurant was A-La carte. If you want rice and beans with your $30 entree that will be $4 and $5 more. You will pay for your chips and, what they call, salsa...diced/seasoned tomatoes. Finally, the ultimate tell, there was not a single Latino-looking customer in the building. Food was good, just good. Ambiance was good. Service was good. When we got back to our hotel a Philly resident told us that if we wanted authentic Mexican food we would need to go to South Philly. read more

Went for a quick drink yesterday. I felt it is not the same as before especially the Rose Petal margarita which used to be my favorite before they closed down due to a fire. Also didn't see the guy who balances your drinks on his three fingers - that used to be a fun little touch to the experience. Our drinks were good but we weren't blown away as we used to. We returned to one of our once favorite restaurants. The vibe and look is still the same and all the wait staff looks the same outside the bartender. The food missed the mark. The menu is generally the same as pre fire. We went close to the re-open so understanding that may need to give it more time to iron out the kinks. We started with chips and guacamole which was basic staple. They could give you more chips on the dish knowing that this is the most inexpensive part of the app and it's 16.00. We also had the Swiss chard tamal which is elevated but just ok. The tamal was not warm or hot as I expected it to be. I usually get the Mocajete but wasn't hungry for that this trip. It's guaranteed hot that's for sure and the sauce is so savory. I had regret shortly after ordering. I opted for the enchiladas they also were not hot. Disappointed in this trip and not running back. We did have margaritas classic and rose margarita. Give this spot some time to get their groove back. The menu process have definitely changed. The 33 mocajete is now 38. So this was a 200.00 dinner for 2 be prepared for that. Not typical to Mexican cuisine but given they consider themselves elevated. I've been to Tequilas many times over the last 20 years and was very excited for their return. Started with the chips and salsa ($10) and the ceviche. There's nothing special about the chips or salsa, for the cost it would be nice for the chips to be warm. The ceviche was delicious, the broth is packed with flavor and you'll eat it by the spoonful. Entree wise we had the conchinita and molcajete. The mojcaete came with a side of rice and beans of comical portion size, maybe 3 tablespoons of rice? The beef in the molcajete was tender and full of flavor. The conchinita was also flavorful, but the pork leaned into dryness. The tortillas that came with the entrees were fantastic. Overall the food is good, but aside from the ceviche and tortillas, nothing wowed me. Tequilas is an institution, they've been around since 1986 and it feels like they missed an opportunity when reopening to reinvent themselves. They don't need to try to be fine dining, there's no need for white tablecloths, etc. The service is always very good, the space has been refreshed and the food is good but with multiple Mexican options in Philly now, you can find the wows elsewhere. read more

Came here on a date night. Made reservations and thankfully I did. Saw signs about brunch which caught my attention and now I have to come back for the brunch. We had a friendly and attentive server waiting on us. I wanted to try a bit of everything but decided on the sweet plantain with beef and it was amazing. I went to Tequilas Reaturant for the first time during restaurant week. I was happy with the menu options and how they had meat, pescatarian options, and veg options. The place is gorgeous with high ceilings, chandeliers, and tons of indoor and outdoor seating. The staff was very fun and friendly making the experience great! The food was good but not amazing enough for 5 stars. The chips and dips were great start of course! The enchiladas were described to be stuffed with crab, lobster, and shrimp but I just tasted crab. The sauces on top were okay but nothing to write home about. The steak and shrimp had more variety on the plate with rice, beans, steak, and shrimp. The shrimp were super flavorful and delicious. I asked the steak to be cooked medium rare and it came out just at well done. The desserts were good but I'd say the cocktails were the best part! I would come back to happy hour!! read more

For a place that looks like nothing from the outside, it's quite beautiful inside! Sometimes you need something to revive your cocktail palate from vodka boredom...and a good quality tequila can be just the answer. The cocktails here are expertly crafted (many are tequila-forward) and our friend was flipping out over how delicious the Chanoc was. If you like cilantro, then this is the cocktail for you. The rest of our crew enjoyed our jalapeno margaritas. Nice kick of heat, but nothing that will set your stomach ablaze. I also especially love bartenders who provide water without having to ask. If you keep your cocktail-to-water ratio equal, then you will never experience a hangover! We only stopped in for drinks, but one member of our party ordered the Sopa De Tortilla, and she was "oohing" and "ahhing" the entire time. Broth based, and chock full of queso fresco and chicken. It was a texture lover's dream. The tortilla chips are made in-house and we could have easily eaten a vat of them if given the option. This is a perfect spot for a date (music is low and classy) and the ambiance is swank-tastic. Love the chandelier in the center of the bar area. Can't wait to return for that soup! read more

I came here with a colleague on a weekday evening and it was fairly busy, but we had a reservation and did not have to wait to get seated. It has an upscale interior and a festive ambience. It's definitely a place for special occasions since we heard them singing birthday songs every 30minutes or so. The complimentary chips and salsa were good, though the chips were pretty greasy. We shared the queso fundido and it was definitely a slice of cheese heaven, but a little too heavy for the both of us. I had the pescado tequilas. Tequila's has been a mainstay in Philly since 1986. I stopped by for a Winter Restaurant Week 2023 dinner at the bar, realizing it has been far too many years since my last visit. The bar area was very lively. Since it was also Happy Hour, I was able to get a discounted Daquari. It was perfectly mixed and I'll just say I didn't stop at one. Soon after i got my first drink a plate of chips and salsa arrived. This comes with the meal. It kept me satisfied as ordered and waited for my meal. The restaurant week menu was impressive. I opted for the TAQUITOS DE POLLO appetizer. It's chicken wrapped up in a corn tortilla topped with salsa. A tasty appetizer that got the meal off to a good start. My entree was the ENCHILADAS PLAYA. It's a steal at Reataurant Week prices. It's crabmeat, lobster, shrimp, and peppers wrapped in a flour tortilla and then covered with melted cheese. It's an outstanding dish. I devoured every drop. If it's on the restaurant week menu moving forward you do not want to skip it. It just happened to be national chocolate cake day when I was there, so I got the CHOCOLATE MOUSSE cake for dessert instead of the Tres Leches, which I have had before and remember it being very good. I was happy with my decision. A delectable dessert that is a unique take on the chocolate cake. At the end of my meal I felt really silly for letting so many years go by without going back to Tequila's. I will not make the same mistake again! read more

Incredible food for restaurant week, and great service and ambiance. We had the following dishes for restaurant week ($40 dinner), plus some extra dishes: - Ensalada cesar - my friends loved it, but I didn't think it was anything special. It was good but nothing to rave about. All I thought was that it had good crunchiness lol. - Mar v tierra (steak and shrimp) - so good! I had the rib eye steak cooked medium rare, and it was flavorful and tender. Shrimps were huge, buttery-rich, and flavorful. The portions were incredibly filling and generous for restaurant week, and there were sides of rice and black beans too. I was impressed--normally, portions for restaurant week can be a bit skimpy, but at not this place! - Fish tacos - delicious, warm, and very tasty - Ceviche - okay. Just not a big fan of that dish in general. - Tres leches cake - amazing! The cake was very fresh and soft, and the frosting cream was light and not overly sweet at all. - Chocolate mousse - meh. I love chocolate and normally must have chocolate-containing desserts, but I'm also not a big fan of mousse's soft/fluffy texture. Finally, after a three year wait my favorite restaurant in Philadelphia has reopened after the fire. Had to go to Philly from Delaware despite a miserable rainy night. We were so happy to see David (the owner) and Oscar. Sat at the bar while waiting for our table and had an amazing mezcal that was made from 10-11 agave (technically a racillia). To kick off our final semester, me and my friend enjoyed a night out in Philly and dinner from Tequilas, and we had the most wonderful time. Our server was one of the most sweetest people I've ever met, and funny too! We started with guacamole as our appetizer, and it came out with the best chips and two additional sides. No, the chips were so good we ate them down to the crumbs! Next, we ordered drinks. I had their rose margarita, and my friend tried their peach lease and short rib drink. If you're a fan of sweet drinks, I recommend the rose margarita! For the main course, I had the Molcajete de Pollo, which I know for next time can be split between two people. If you're looking for a massive dish, I recommend it. It came out still pipping hot and was served with a side of tortillas, rice, and mole sauce, and it was DIVINE!! We ended off with a slice of Tres Leches Cakes, and it sure gave us a good night's sleep. Probably the best Mexican food I've had in my life! Prices are definitely are up there but for the quality of this food, I'd say it was totally worth it. The place itself is a little cramped but I was seated outside in the heated area which was kind of nice actually. Although, our waiter wouldn't come as often so I felt like I had to wave him down here and there, but he was still friendly. The heated area is divided with some transparent plastic for each table, but I still feel like my neighboring parties could hear all the gossip I was spilling easily since we were all so close. Lol. They gave us some tortillas/chips (I don't remember - it's been a while) to start off with some of these salsas which were all tasty. I also got some rice and something else that came with the molcajete de carne. But the molcajete de carne itself so FANTASTIC. However, it's such a huge portion for one person; I should have split with someone but the food coma finishing it was worth it. It comes out in a hot bowl and it's so flavourful with the grilled beef flavoured with garlic, pepper and other seasoning. It's fun to eat it with the blue tortillas, rice and other stuff. Cheese definitely made an impression on the dish too. It was so tasty that I really didn't want to waste it even though I was full. I definitely recommend the dish and this restaurant in general. I've been to Tequilas a few times over the years and while I enjoy the food, I can't say it's particularly remarkable. During my most recent visit, I ordered the ceviche and molcajete de pollo which ended uo being my favorite dishes I've ever had at the restaurant. The drinks never disappoint. My go-to is the rose margarita. The real star of Tequilas is the staff. They're so much fun and have a great energy. Restaurant week review- My husband and I chose Tequilas for Restaurant Week specifically because of their outdoor dining set up. You get a semi-private, heated area, separated by frames with clear material. There are hanging plants and cultural music playing in the background. We were cozy! For drinks, my husband had the Oaxacan old fashioned and I had the rose margarita. They were delicious, and visually appealing. For our first course, we shared the chicken tortilla soup and the taquitos. The chicken tortilla soup was presented very interestingly, with all the contents in a soup bowl and then the hot broth poured on top by our waiter. Both apps were tasty, but we chose the soup as our winner! For our entree course, we shared the surf & turf (steak and shrimp with beans and rice), and the seafood enchiladas (with rice and veggies). The surf and turf was the clear winner here, with huge portions and a tasty sauce to accompany the steak. For dessert, we shared the tres leches and the chocolate mousse. Do yourself a favor and get the tres leches! So moist and delicious. Overall a great experience with excellent service. We will definitely be back to try out their regular menu! I've been going to Tequilas since 1999. They have removed or altered many of the items previously offered, which was very disappointing. The Mole Chicken, the chorizo queso , the ceviche, the filet and prawn, etc are no longer served. The main dishes are far the quality I've been accustomed to all these years. This was my absolute favorite restaurant in Philadelphia, but with the new selections I will just go there for a margarita and have dinner elsewhere. My heart is broken. read more

Came here for restaurant week years ago and had such a great time! So when my cousins and I wanted to arrange for dinner, I had to recommend this place. It didn't disappoint this year either! Majority of the cousins got there on time but we had 2 that were late. I talked to the host and he said he had to wait for the full party to arrive before they seat us and we would lose the reservation if they didn't show up in the 15 minute window which it course they didn't. Luckily the host told me to find him when they arrive and the max wait would be 30 minutes. Once my cousins finally arrived, it didn't take more than 5 minutes to be seated! The host even made jokes about them paying for all of us haha The restaurant week menu was full of options and we decided to order as many items as possible to sample the menu. We also got complimentary chips and 2 salsas which I definitely over ate cause they were so good! We ordered all the appetizers: ceviche, empanadas, and tortilla soup. The ceviche was SO fresh and tasty as well as the empanadas. I personally thought the soup was bland but some other cousins liked it. For the entrees, we got the chochinita pibil (pulled pork), mar y tierra (surf and turf), enchiladas playa, and the chiles rellenos (poblano peppers). The mar y tierra was amazing and I really regret not getting that! The pulled pork was really good as well and we were given tortillas along with it. The poblano peppers are listed as vegetarian but they gave my cousin one vegetarian and the other was pork or beef. My favorite part of the meal was the dessert! The tres leches cake is engrained in my taste buds and it tasted exactly the same years later. The chocolate mousse was good as well but too soft in consistency. It's been a while since I've been to Tequilas, with the pandemic locked down and since I started working in the burbs. When I was in workin in city this place was my first choice for special Client /team work dinners and hanging with friends after work. My BFF wanted to take me out for my post birthday celebration for dinner so I booked reservation on RESY ( so easy BTW , love the app but wish for points like me Open Table). I was so excited now that the bar is open and the restaurant has opened inside to 50%. Eating outside had been an option for a while. They built genius comfy booths on the street, however the exquisite decorated ambiance was what I yearned for after eating take out for so long. I was looking forward to what I remembered the delicious and beautiful food, high quality tequila drinks, stellar service, friendly staff and cool ambiance of the restaurant. When we arrived we were greeted by a charismatic friendly host at the door. The restaurant inside was buzzing with a vibrant vibe as we walked past the bar and tables. We sat at a 2 seater against the window overlooking the street and alley. Very cool city view to people watch as people walked through the alley walking their cute dogs. A kind man waived at us and lifted his little dog to the window so we could see him and say HI. My friend captured a pic. What a touching experience and memory. Our server came to our table right away after we were seated end was super helpful in describing the margaritas and other drinks. My friend went for the traditional margarita on the rocks and I got the red sangria . The sangria was excellent! Lots of fresh fruit and I could taste the infusion of fruit juices. Next we had the queso dip with chorizo ( my fave in the past) Yummy as I had it before! And for the signature entree : The molcajete beef. Super comfort with bubbling suave of chilled and spices and tender beef in a large mortar bowl. Just as I remember fro the past dinners. Rice and beans beautifully presented on the side. And...blue tortillas! The highlight... blue tortillas! So delicious! After eating the delicious food I wish I had room for desert- Tres leches cake is epic as I remember. Next time for sure. We were looking for a post dinner hang out and decide to hang at the bar. Why not as the gorgeous crystal chandelier was illuminating and the decor took us back to being in a fancy palace. The bartender was so friendly and made us feel so welcomed. My friend is a Spanish teacher who lived in Mexico and enjoyed conversation with the wait staff as they were picking up drinks . This place was decent. I took my family out for restaurant week. We did the outside seating, which I thought felt very comfortable and cozy. We all ordered margaritas to start off; mine being the Rosa Margarita. Looked so pretty. If you enjoy margaritas this one will feel refreshing. The staff wore masks and gloves at all times. The waiter was friendly and answered all of our questions, patiently. Based on what I ordered, the taquitos (starter) and flan (dessert) were my favorite dishes from the menu. However, it seemed like the steak was the most popular dish, based on the waiters recommendation, so I suggest ordering that. I was also able to taste some from my my aunts plate and it was very delicious, in my humble opinion. I took a look inside the restaurant when I went to the bathroom (which was very clean) and it was super cute. They create a nice Mexican-style vibe with aesthetics and music. Walked in with a friend and asked for a table for two. Instead of seating us, the hostess immediately said "you guys are going to order food, too, right? You have to order main courses if you're going to seated. We have a lot of reservations tonight." What about two Black women entering a RESTAURANT would make you assume that they weren't going to order food? I should add that there were a lot of empty tables both inside and outside. My friend and I are both visibly Black women and wearing our hair in long braided styles-- I guess our outward appearances didn't fit the profile of a typical diner at Tequilas because there was literally nothing that would've indicated that we weren't planning to dine.
