We had brunch on a Saturday. My friends had dined at Bar Bombon a few times and this was my first visit. Unfortunately, we were all underwhelmed by the service. Getting seated and taking our order were comic (read: frustrating) "Who's on first" ordeal. To make matters worse, my friends ordered guacamole only to lear a few minutes later that they could not serve it because the avocados did not meet their standards. We appreciated their insistence on serving quality ingredients, but were annoyed the waitress was unaware the item was unavailable. The food we managed to have - yucca appetizer, breakfast tacos, big breakfast, and cauliflower tacos were good. In short, the food is good but I'm not sure it's worth the hassle. My friend and I swapped one taco each so we could try both. For the impossible tacos, they were seasoned well but they tasted very ordinary to me. Nothing special. However, I really enjoyed my hearts of palm 'fish' taco. I thought the fried hearts of palm, corn, and sauce gave a nice texture, taste and mouth feel. Last but not least, for dessert, he ordered the tres leches cake and I ordered the bittersweet chocolate pudding. The tres leches cake was dense and a little more on the sweet side. I was not a fan of my bittersweet chocolate pudding though. Since it was pudding on the menu, I thought it would have a pudding-like texture, but it almost looked like ice cream. We didn't realize it was vegan when we walked in and it isn't really advertised as such, so my friend was a little disappointed by that but we stayed anyways. I got the breakfast tacos off of the brunch menu, and my friend had the impossible tacos. They both looked pretty similar - two medium tacos covered in pico de gallo and pickled cabbage. The breakfast tacos were well seasoned didn't "taste vegan" but I don't eat much meat. My friend also thought the impossible tacos were pretty good. There were some highs and lows to this place but overall a good experience. We got the meatballs since the pictures looked really good and we don't usually get the chance. When they came out, they dropped somw of the bread on the table which wasn't a big deal but they got us somw extra anyway which was nice. Parking is a nightmare in the area, not just for this business. You may spend a long time looking for street metered parking. I ordered the nachos with only jackfruit, cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo, and avocado slices... It ended up coming with corn on it. So I just picked the corn out. It tasted okay. I loved bar bombón!! It's a cozy but well decorated spot. Initially, I selected the restaurant because of its completely vegetarian / vegan friendly menu. Every dish is crafted so creatively and packed with delicious vegetables. It was a dream trying to pick a dish, since I had TOO many options for once! That's incredibly rare as a vegetarian. Philly steak empanadas were excellent but I wish they had a little bit more cheese. The spicy ketchup on the side was a great addition. The Tres Leches cake was moist and rich. Did not anticipate needing a reservation on a Wednesday and it turns out this place is so popular you do. Fortunately, the very kind hostess was able to find a single seat outside left that I was able to be seated at for service. The cocktail menu was wonderful and I ordered a delicious cocktail along with an appetizer of the plantains, which were amazing. For dinner I chose the meatballs. The salted grapefruit margarita I had was top notch - just right the right balance of sweet and strong. I opted for the double chorizo burger without pickles or ranch and it was very good! The "chorizo patties" didn't taste like your typical soyrizo but instead was more so like alternative beef than pork. The papitas fritas were super crunchy and skinny! Now, for the food-one word: AMAZING!!!! The Yuca was delicious, although I would have the sauce on the side to prevent the yucca from becoming soggy, nevertheless, delicious! I've been here several times, and loved it every time. This time, we went in on a Sunday for brunch. We had reservations for like 12:30, and that was a smart thing to do, because things got busy in the middle there, and we needed a place to fuel up on food before heading back home on a train for the next hour. We got the nachos, and empanadas. Excellent choice on both fronts. The crust on the empanadas was chewy on the inside and crispy crackly on the outside. When they got to our table, they weren't so hot that they'd burn your mouth. Instead, they were hot and ready to eat right away. Nice! The nachos were generously drizzled with their house made queso (which I think they mentioned is like a potato/carrot situation that they mix in some follow your heart cheese into) which is addictive. You can dip your empanada in there, and you'll be a happy camper. The one wish I had is that they throw a touch more guacamole onto the nachos. There was a tiny little scoop of it on top. However, the rest of the stuff on the nachos was lovely, and we finished every last one. For our main dishes, we got the chorizo burger and the avocado toast. I had been eyeballing the Grande Platter, but the waitress warned me that it was going to be a LOT of food when I asked her how big it was. I switched to the avocado toast instead. That was the right move. The empanadas and the nachos were a fair bit of food, so the avocado toast was just enough so that I didn't die. Both dishes were absolutely delightful. Also, we had the Puerto Rican punch, in mango passionfruit. Holy cow, that was so good. We each kept wanting more, because it was probably the nicest, most refreshing cocktail we'd had all weekend. When seated, we were told the food comes out as it is made (tapas style) which worked! Beso Romero cocktail was great. Food however lacked flavor. The "chorizo spiced beef" just tasted like warmed impossible meat- which to me is off-putting. Philly Cheese Steak Empanada was not as Philly as they thought. Again, lacked flavor. Plantain's were plantains, can't really mess those up. This visit was not a good representation of Puerto Rican/Latin flavor or culture...vegetable based or not. The staff was so helpful and accommodating that they actually had a list of prepared dishes that she could eat waiting for upon our arrival. The drinks were so good any you order will be fantastic. Have slowly but surely eaten our way through the menu at Bar Bombon. For someone who isn't vegan, I come back to this place time and time again for it's insanely creative and flavorful dishes, and really fun vibes. Atmosphere-wise, you could be in an elevated beach-front spot in LA. Service is laid-back but quick, and if you've been to any of the HipCity sister restaurants, then you know the cocktail menu is no joke! Their margaritas rank highly on my personal favorites list.
