The aesthetic of the place is nice and they had good music playing. We came for Valentine's Day and they definitely raised the prices for the occasion. We paid $4 more for the fried chicken dinner. Service was not good. The server had a very low voice so it was hard to hear him at times. He was also not very attentive to our table. I had to flag him down to get some utensils. Food was just okay. The biscuit and the cinnamon butter was the best thing I had. The chicken had a nice crisp to it, however the skin has all the flavor.

The ambiance of this place is dope, upscale looking, not a fan of the tables as opposed to the booths. This place reminded of a restaurant I visited in Chicago called the whale in terms of ambiance. The cornbread was my favorite thing from followed by the lamb chops. Everything else was below what it was valued at. Our waiter seemed to forget us or what we requested a few times, but it wasn't just us because the table next to us also made a comment. I'd definitely recommend going for the experience of going but I wouldn't go out of my way to go again.

This is one of my favorite sit down restaurants in center city and even Philadelphia. I'm a seafood fan and they have a good amount of options. The restaurant is on a beautiful block with a nice entrance and a friendly upbeat staff. I've been there for restaurant week as well as other dining opportunities and I really enjoyed my meals and experiences. I had the fried green tomatoes and seafood main entrees but my absolute favorite is their key lime pie! It is sooo good and I think about it often. Awesome dining establishment.

We enjoyed happy hour a Rex Royale. Our burgers were just the right size (not sliders but not huge) and very flavorful. The wings were supper yummy and the coating was quite unique. We did not care for the fried tomatoes and I wish they had some nice veggies or salads to help balance the greasy southern food on the menu. We liked our cocktails by they were crazy small (maybe the smallest I have seen in Philly?) and still $16 which was not great. Service was solid and the ambiance was nice. We will return next time we are craving wings and burgers!

My friends and I had a great time at Rex at the Royal! The food was really good! It was pricey but affordable for an upscale brunch. I will say that the service could have been better, but we still overall had a great time and enjoyed the food and drinks!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting this restaurant for a date night. There is not a lot of parking in downtown Philadelphia so we decided to Uber over. The restaurant was lively and had lots of patron in the bar when you first walked in. I love the colors and style of this restaurant. The bright blue and orange that greet you in the door is very inviting. We ordered drinks and small plates to start with. Our server Kayla was very nice and gave recommendations on menu items. We ordered smoked chicken, wings, and mac & cheese topped with crab meat. Both were really good. For entrées, we ordered catfish and waffles and frog more stew. The catfish and waffles came with a meat piece of catfish that was well seasoned. A twist to the waffles was that it included trout row on the waffle. the frog more stew was filled with delicious seafood. It had a wonderful flavor and the seafood inside the stew was cooked perfectly. We had a seasonal peach cobbler topped with ice cream. It was really good as well. I can't wait to return to sit in their main dining room after it is renovated. I'd love to try other items from their menu, especially if it changes seasonally.

Rex at the Royal is my new favorite happy hour spot in the city. Not only is the bar huge so you're almost guaranteed a seat, but the menu is so so good. The Groundbreaking cocktail was like a lavender spritz, and such a deal at $9. The jalapeño cucumber ice was the most incredible accompaniment I've ever been served with oysters. And the cheese sauce for the fries?? Addicting! I believe they put old bay seasoning in there but whatever it is it's so tasty and worth the $2 extra. The bartenders were friendly and attentive and my drink was never empty. The bar is open before dinner service, which brings a nice mix of crowd that helps the restaurant come alive. And the peach cobbler is probably one of my new favorite desserts in the city. Can't wait to come back and try the whole menu!

Full of flavor! I was in town on business travel during restaurant week so I decided to meet a friend for dinner at Rex at the Royal for dinner. We both went with the restaurant week menu but got different things. I went with the tempura vegetables, chicken with kale & street corn fish, and the key lime pie. My friend got the Caesar salad, shrimp & grits, and bread pudding. We both loved our food and also loved each other's meals. If I visit Philly again, I'd definitely visit Rex on the Royal again!

The food is delicious!! Try the fried chicken dinner available on the weekends. The Crawfish pot pie is decadent.

I love a restaurant with great decor. I googled romantic restaurants near me when I was in Philly and I was happy with my pick. super high ceilings, huge bar, green walls & plush seating. The only thing that took the romance out of it was a huge tv playing sports in the middle of the bar, but I ended up getting into the Phillies game. There was a cafe/ wine store in the same space, but it didn't necessarily take away from the space. I came around 4 which I learned is too late for brunch & too early for dinner so we could only order off of the happy hour menu. Options were extremely limited, but everything was delicious. Fish strips was a tiny portion, the burger bun was toasted dark (almost burnt!), fries were good, Mac & cheese creamy (initially looked watery but firmed up) & I thought I was being healthy ordering the fried tomatoes/peppers dish (but I realize now that I didn't put emphasis on the "fried" part ). But everything tasted good- not too salty or oily. The drinks I didn't really like, but Idk if it was the bartender or just the options. we were the only ones at the bar on a Saturday and the bartender cleaned up our dishes pretty quickly, coming to check on us a few times if we were done when we still had food in our plate. This made us feel a little rushed & I was originally considering ordering another drink/dessert. Overall, bring a date here and feel free to sit at the bar.

My colleague and I met up here while on a work trip. I was excited to learn that it was a historical landmark --black owned theater! I was also excited to try the food. Food: 8/10 - Don't get me wrong, the food was pretty good! The wings, oysters and cornbread was a hit! The Mac and cheese wasn't bad, however not the best I've had. The oxtails were ok. They could've used a bit more flavor. My colleague said hers were on the fatty side and mine were in between but more meatier for me. Service- 8/10 - no complaints about the service. Our server was nice and welcoming. She explained the historical aspect of the venue and assisted with any questions about the menu. Ambiance- 9/10 - The ambiance is definitely a vibe. It gives a nice Philly vibe and would definitely come back for a live band. Overall it was great experience. Next time, I'll be sure to try more of the menu and their specialty cocktails. The cocktails seemed to look really good!

I can't get over how good the shrimp and grits here is. After trying the dish for the first time in New Orleans, I thought I knew what shrimp and grits is supposed to taste like. After going to Rex and Royal, however, I must say that my expectation is calibrated to a different level of standard. The meaty jumbo shrimps were cooked just right, in that they were still juicy and not rubbery. The lumps of crab meat on the dish were a pleasant surprise along with the tangy tomatoes that added a citrusy aroma to the otherwise starchy dish. Everything on it was just delectable. I'll still be on a prowl for a place that serves shrimp and grits as good (or even better) than the one here, but it'll be a high bar for any other establishments to meet/beat. Aside from their noteworthy culinary offerings, their service and ambience were also grand. Our waitress checked up on us frequent enough to make sure our dishes and beverages were sufficiently served to meet our needs. Overall, dining at Rex is highly recommended experience.

What a great spot!! The staff was very attentive ( Kayla was amazing). She helped me make some dinner choices and helped me out when one of the dishes wasn't to my liking. The Rex burger is definitely worth a try and the seasoned old bay fries were delicious. The collard greens were different and not to my liking. Not bad, just different. They have a sweet taste and I was looking for savory. Also, try the biscuits . This is a great place to try if you're in Philly for a bit. Enjoy

    Is there a dress code?

I would agree with the other answers, nothing official but it is a nice place. I wore dress jeans and a nice top. Jackets are not required for guys, but leave the t shirt from your favorite concert at home!

Does this place have bottomless brunch?

    No it does not.

Are the city special burgers only available that week or can I order any special burger and day( like at regular price)?

they always have burgers on the menu

Staff was friendly and on point from beginning to end. They do take the dress code seriously, I saw people get turned away for athletic wear. It's clear on their website and not asking too much for an upscale night out. Prices weren't ridiculous, especially since portions were plentiful. A lot of people were leaving with leftovers. The specialty drinks are a bit pricey tho. The cornbread and Mac n cheese are a must order the moment you sit down to start things off. Both served in a small skillet, perfect to share. The cornbread bread was flavorful and the butter that comes on top you def want to let that melt right in! The Mac n cheese noodles were a little softer than I would of preferred but the blend of cheeses and the crisp crust on top made me not worry about the doneness of the noodles, it was top notch! We went classic with the entrees - catfish with gulf shrimp. The catfish was cooked perfect super tender and flaky. I wasn't thrilled with the shrimp, for "gulf shrimp" as they listed in the menu they were a lot Smaller than I expected and a little tough. The sauce they came in was nice. I would have liked some kind of sauce on the side for the catfish. The collard green rice was delicious and the broccoli that came with it was prob the most delicious broccoli I've ever had, just cooked well in lots of butter! The other entree we got was the fried chicken. Really delicious and tender. It came with a sweet potato side that was yummy and a classic collard greens Even tho we were stuffed we had to try the bread pudding, it was served with a Side of delicious ice cream. The food was honestly a 10 out of 10. The collard greens were so good and full of flavor, and I got the smothered turkey wings which were amazing. Definitely ask for extra gravy because that gravy is too good not to. My friend got the shrimp and cheesecake pop and the portion size was actually really solid. I also cannot forget the cheesesteak beignets because wow... such a creative idea and they were amazing. I asked for the sauce on the side and it initially came out wrong, so I had to flag someone down to fix it, but once they corrected it everything was perfect. Now the only downside for me was definitely the service. We really were not checked on much outside of taking our order and bringing drinks. Anytime we needed something like boxes, extra help, or corrections to food, we kinda had to wave down bus boys or random staff members passing by. A few more table check ins would've made the experience so much better because the food itself truly deserves top tier service. Parking can also be a little annoying, but I did notice there's a garage across the street which helps. Overall though, I absolutely loved this place and I'm so happy my friend brought me here. Even with the service issues, I would 100% come back because the food alone is worth it. I love the drawings on the wall and the place has a cute and cozy feel which we love! Their menu is about the same. The food is delicious, just like the last time I went. We decided to share: Sticky wings- these were very good, crispy and a little sticky but the perfect amount of crunch. 9/10 Cheesesteak Beignets: A nice ball packed with steak and cheese. 10/10 Cornbread: Nice and warm. Crisp and buttery around the edges. Pairs nicely with my meal. 9/10 I decided to try the Oxtails, with sweet potato puree, collard greens and a side of mac and cheese. You get two meaty, nice size oxtails that are fall off the bone tender 10/10. I loved the Collared greens with a slight vinegary kick to them 9/10. The Mac and cheese was delicious as well. This is a hard dish to rate, because I think mind is better, but I'll give it a 8/10! One of my friends got a Grilled Watermelon Salad. I tasted it, and surprisingly it was delicious. 9/10. One day when I need to be watching my weight more closely (which is now) I would consider getting this. The portions were good, enough to take home for another meal or to share. The wait staff was great! Very pleasant and on time with our food. The prices are fair in this high priced market. Unfortunately when I rate any place I go, I also include how convenient it is to get there. I am a driver and drive just about everywhere I go. I would not recommend driving to this location. It is very busy, and parking your car is at a minimum. They do have parking lots that you will have to pay for and walk a little ways. I would probably get a Uber next time. Other than the parking, and traffic, I would highly recommend Amina's!

As he stepped outside, I asked my husband to check if he wanted something to eat. When my husband came back, he told me he had given him money. While that was kind, I honestly would have preferred to get him food myself just to make sure he actually ate. A few minutes later, the man came back in and sat at the counter. At first, I didn't see anyone approach him, but shortly after, the staff brought him a bag with food. I'm not sure if he ordered through the take out window then came in, paid the waiter, or if it was provided to him, but either way, it meant a lot to see. He took his food and left. What stood out most was that the staff didn't ignore him, rush him out, or treat him like he didn't belong. At one point, I even heard a staff member ask if he had received his juice, which made me think this wasn't their first interaction with him. I'm not sure why I waited so long to try the chicken at Bud and Marilyn's, but better late than never! They serve a LARGE 1/2 chicken. I started with the thigh. I was smitten by the first bite. I was told the chicken is soaked in a buttermilk brine for 24-48 hours - dipped in a buttermilk dredge - covered with their 'secret recipe' seasoned flour - and fried in a 'pressure fryer' that cooks the chicken in 12 minutes. It was perfectly fried - so crispy - the texture and seasoning of the exterior coating was incredible. The chicken was tender and juicy - the thigh was the juiciest - I didn't get to try the drumstick as I was too full! I had the thigh and 1/2 the breast. The breast is my favorite and I savored each large delicious piece I broke apart. It's important to pick up the chicken and eat it by hand - I did cut mine in half for a picture - but didn't use a fork to eat it - you lose the 'panache'of the meal. I didn't use the hot sauce served with the chicken - I brought my own bottle of honey and poured it over the chicken and biscuits. It was heavenly! Which brings me to the Biscuits! The dish comes with 2 large fluffy buttermilk biscuits - they were golden brown on the outside and tender and fluffy on the inside! They had such a rich, buttery flavor. The menu was pretty interesting with some fusion items and comfort foods. Dutch Baby - They described this as kind of a steamed pancake and it was pretty tasty. Besides being piping hot, it had the best chewy eggy texture and reminded me of a popover. It wasn't too sweet and got most of the flavor from the berries and light syrup on top. Pork Katsu Breakfast Sandwich - This one sounded the most interesting to us and it came with the pork katsu, egg, aioli and arugula. The chicken was crispy and light and I really enjoyed the sweet brioche bun but it could have used a bit more sauce. The thin crisp fries on the sides were nice too. Overall, we really enjoyed their brunch dishes and do want to come back to try some of their other more popular items like the french toast banana foster that ran out that day.

The food is served buffet style and is located in a cute grocery market. It's a relaxed, community ambiance. The service is great. Since it's self-serve, there's really no waiting on anyone. The workers just wait at the end of the buffet belt to ring up your order. The food is DELICIOUS! The fish is fried to perfection, the yams are delectable, and the shrimp is the BOMB! I come every time I'm in Philadelphia! I strongly recommend this place if you're looking for some comfort food to enjoy on a relaxed day! The food is very rich, so it's not something you can eat consistently if you're on a health kick, but it's definitely a lovely treat every blue moon!

The fish sandwich and the wings were tasteless. Perhaps customers enjoy the food , because the portions are large but my friend and I were speechless . It appears , not stating that this is true , but whomever the cook was , he must have fried all items without seasoning. Unfortunately I will not return and that is ok , because at least I gave this establishment a try . The food was not a hit for me , however the owner and the staff were kind.
