This place will bring you back to your first bite of pasta from your grandma as a kid. I sat down at this restaurant for the first time a few months back. I was blown away by the calamari. That is what brought me back today. This calamari is untouched by competitors. The lemon garlic butter sauce, not even comparable to anything else. The peppers, Hungarian I believe. Spicy, cooked to perfection. The onions, sweet and acts as a perfect compliment to the dish itself. The spice level. Enough to have a drip of sweat garner upon your forehead. A perfect spice. The superstar, the calamari. The batter is what makes this dish. It makes the consumer emotional. It will make the consumer appreciate the little things in life. I had a tear swell up in my eye as I ate it. After eating most of the calamari, I had a rum and coke. Served with a little lime, it was perfectly blended. Kudos to the bartender. Now, the dish. Casalinga. A hearty meat sauce served with two meatballs and an Italian sausage. The waitress hooked it up on the Parmesan, too. That pasta was damn good. I ate it all. Hurting afterwards, but it was well worth it. I'm lactose intolerant. All in all, I highly recommend this restaurant if you're looking for authentic Italian food. Terrible, we ordered the calamari but it was just a pool of butter garlic. I love butter garlic, but Jesus it was overwhelming. The server was alright, she did her job. Ordered a couple other dishes, and when you're spending so much on a dish you'd think it was presentable. The noodles were over cooked, and the sauce tasted like canned sauce. It's a small restaurant and they don't take reservations but they're worth the wait if you find yourself in the area. Tried their pizza for the first time. Really liked it. First impression is it looks like a homemade pizza, a really good one. Reminded me of one I could make but it wouldn't be this good. Dinner with a good girlfriend brought me to this little place where the homemade pasta is amazing and the sea bass is just as good, the sauce was a little heavy on the capers, but it was very good. The calamari appetizer was good as well...it didn't come with your typical marinara sauce...it was some kind of lemony goodness that went really well with the bread, too. We came here for a Saturday night and there was a 30 minute wait. The restaurant is small and intimate. When I was walking past tables, I accidentally hit two people with my purse- but it couldn't be helped, there was no room! When we were seated, we were seated in the back. I would say the restaurant is a mix of upscale and tavern. The design is fancy but then you see TVs in the corner. The service was great. I ordered the Traverse city chicken. It was amazing but the portion size was too big and the main plate only comes with chicken. No sides. The plate came with 3 pieces of chicken. I could only eat 1/2 of 1! Bologna is our new favorite date spot! We discovered it in late fall last year and have been back 4 times since. Every time bringing with us friends or family because we love it so much! Rosie is an amazing waitress, we've dined with her all but one time. She's so attentive, and bends over backwards for her patrons. Tonight, Rosie went above and beyond! On the drink specials there was a red wine sangria, personally I prefer white. I didn't see a white sangria on any drink menus but Rosie said "No worries I can make you one." She delivered! It was so refreshing! I usually get a custom pasta dish with gluten free pasta, bolognese sauce, mushrooms, Italian sausage, and baked mozzarella (essentially the Casalinga, sans meatball and gluten ) - tonight I wanted to try the carbonara I've read and heard amazing things about. Typically the bechemal sauce in it contains gluten. But Rosie was able to get the chef to make a gluten free option for me. I couldn't believe it! It was AMAZING!Boyfriend had the pizza tonight. There are a thousand words I could use to describe my experience here but the two that best do the trick is overpriced manure. You know what, that is an insult to manure. At least manure can be thrown in the fields to help crops grow. If you threw any of this food out into the fields you would have a acres of dead, festering crow carcasses of innocent birds who thought they were scavenging but instead had the worst luck of eating someone's leftovers from this restaurant. The night started off poorly with a loaf of bread which was well textured, crunchy and crusty on the outside while being soft on the inside. The problem was the dipping sauce that was unbalanced and overloaded by a strong vinegar taste. Have you ever done a staight shot of apple vinegar cider? Not much different. I had the misfortune of ordering one of their specialty pizzas in the hopes of getting something unique instead of the run of the mill affair that litters downtown Rochester. Grilled peaches, goat cheese a balsamic reduction... All perfect paired in theory, but how it how does one suck all the flavor and life out of foods that should pop with it? Granted, my answer to all food issues is to add more cilantro, but I don't think even the God Herb could have saved this mess. That's right, not even cilantro. It is madness!!! Me lady ordered a pasta dish and if there was a saving grace for the night it would be the pasta sauce. It was delightful. It was creamy and flavorful without being heavy. The shrimp was cooked perfectly... Even though there was only 4 of them, but $26 for pasta is absurd. ABSURD!!!! This is another restaurant following in the recent trend of overcharging for horrid food. Whatever food revolution that is happening in Michigan is definitely not happening here. read more

I think this is certainly one of the better restaurants in downtown Rochester. The food is always hot, filling, and good. I have been here multiple times and never had a bad meal. The wait staff has been good (not outstanding most times - but solidly good). Had the lasagna last time i was there and it was really good. Put a some apps on top of any meal and you are likely taking some food home. Only suggestion could be to add some more liquors for availability (bourbon :) ), but since this isn't supposed to be their specialty then not that big of deal. Will be back. read more

I was so pleased to try this restaurant where I had t been before. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. We went for lunch and ordered several things to try including the Carbonara, Chicken Marsala, Spicy Chicken Alfredo, and though it was not on the menu any longer, they Chef made me the most wonderful Caccio e Pepe by my request (it costed me lol but I have NO REGRETS). I hate to do this because I know the service industry has been suffering since before the pandemic started, but our experience last Friday was awful. Specifically, it was awful due to the gentleman who took our carry out order over the phone. Something was odd about the way he was talking to me-he wasn't engaged in the conversation and he seemed flustered. He never asked for my phone number, so I assumed he had it from the caller ID. I placed our order, family chicken dinner: pollo alla parmigiana with Caesar salad, four mini cannolis, focaccia, and a large penne tomato basil. He didn't ask if we wanted a house salad or a Caesar salad, so I asked him if it came with a Caesar salad and he he said, "If it doesn't, I'll make sure it does...I'm sorry, I don't have the carry out menu in front of me." He gave me the total and said that it will be ready in about twenty minutes. It was just a strange interaction, so I had a bad feeling about Bologna from the start. We arrived at the back of the restaurant to pick up our food and I gave the nice young lady my name, Zack and she said, "I'm sorry, he didn't know how you wanted the chicken, so your order hasn't been prepared yet." I said, "I told him pollo alla parmigiana." She said, "I'm sorry, I can put the order in now and it will take about fifteen minutes. Would you like to wait?" So, we waited. Waiting in in the car is not an easy thing to do when you have young boys sitting in the backseat. Another girl came out about ten minutes later and asked for my name. I told it to her and she said, "Is there a last name?" To which I said, "No, he only asked for my first name." I could tell she was frustrated as she gave another carry out order to the car in front of us. I called the restaurant after fifteen minutes to find out how much longer it was going to take for our food to be prepared. The young lady on the phone checked with the cook and told me it was going to be another five minutes. We eventually got our food, she apologized for the mix-up and we were on our way home. The order cost $54 and I added a $5 tip just to be nice because I know the carry out girls didn't create this problem, so it cost us $59. But, that's the thing, the problem was created by one of their co-workers. That guy better get engaged and figure things out because he did his fellow employees a disservice by giving poor customer service to me. They were probably having a good day before he opened up this can of worms. He could have called me to verify how I wanted the chicken cooked rather than us finding out that he missed the mark upon our arrival to the restaurant. Poor carry out girls-they had to clean up someone else's mess. The food was pretty good-standard Italian food. The chicken, focaccia & Caesar salad were tasty, but the penne was rather basic. To be clear- this review is for the service, not the food. The food was fine; nothing exciting, but not bad. Portions were a little skimpy but fine. My real issue is how poorly they managed carry out orders. We placed a carry out order on New Year's Eve. We called ahead of time and were given a pick up time. We arrived a few minutes after our pickup time and called. We were told they were running 10-15 minutes behind- fine, no problem. They then proceeded to let us and about a dozen others sit for over an HOUR (not an exaggeration) with no updates and no apologies. We called for updates twice and both times were told they just needed a few more minutes. I understand COVID has made things difficult and that holidays are especially tricky. But this is simply not acceptable. They had my phone number, if they knew they were running that far behind they should have called or at the very least given us a realistic update when we first arrived to wait for our food. Having a line of cars in your parking lot for over an hour is unacceptable and reflects poor management. read more

the worst service I have ever had at a restaurant. from the time we came in the waitresses (Kimberly) attitude was piss poor. she was upset that our reservation of 9 turned to 7, due to people not being able to attend and said we "shorted them", although the table could only comfortably sit 7-8. We were only given 4 menus , and when someone asked for a drink in our party she would not even look at her. She was rude from start to finish. When someone complained about their food, although not wanting to send it back, she insisted no one ever has issues with that dish. Her attitude was horrendous the entire time. When it came down to the check we asked to split and she made a face and followed with a snarky comment and stated she assumed we would all pay together. Although we only needed 3 separate checks. Manager asked how the experience was and when we said poor, he just made a face and walked away. Terrible experience and we were there to celebrate a birthday which now was a bad time. The gluten free bread they brought out with our waters was simply the BEST I've ever eaten!! The salad was fresh and delicious. One of my favorite Italian places, I'm surprised it doesn't have more reviews than 5 as of this writing (January 4th, 2020). I've been here MANY times. It's a cute, cozy and charming Italian place with a front and back entrance with seating in both areas and a connecting hallway passing the kitchen in between. Very large wine selection, specialty cocktails, and craft beers. There's also another location in Clarkston and I believe Sterling Heights - although I haven't been to the Sterling Heights one. My favorite appetizers are the Calamari, Caprese Mozzarella, and Filet Tips. For Entrees/Pasta the Gnocchi Palomino, Alfredo, and Casalinga. The Margareita pizza is the only pizza I've had from here before and its very good but its usually a to-go for me. I'm not a fan of the soups usually offered but the Italian wedding soup they always have here then I believe every week or few days they change the other soup - everyone I'm with loves the Italian wedding so I'm the minority in the soup game. Overall its a go-to place for me and one of my favorites in downtown Rochester. They change the desserts often but currently they have a red velvet cake with Michigan pot hole ice cream, two of my favorite offerings in one dessert, YUM! In the summer I believe it's the limoncello cake which is amazing as well. They also have peppermint bark ice cream during the winter seasons.
