We almost didn't even end up at this restaurant, which is an interesting story. Earlier this afternoon we decided to walk into the first indian restaurant we could find (which shall not be named). It was dimly lit and poorly decorated, with one lonely white dude eating alone. I immediately had a good feeling about this place. An overly cordial man dressed too nicely for the atmosphere offered us menus. We had been enticed into this gem by the faded lunch buffet sign, which must have been laminated and taped to the window several years prior. We asked if they had any vegan options, to which he hesitated, which was a great sign. He meekly showed us one tray of overcooked cauliflower with minimal seasoning. We made our way back to the table to "check out the menu" aka google a better place to eat, hopefully with dosas because I just found out that my boyfriend has never had one. And that's how we found Bombay Royale. This place is beautiful, clean, and it was pretty busy when we got there, which I think speaks for itself. When we asked if they had vegan options at the buffet they rolled their eyes, which showed a. how many times they get asked this question and b. the ridiculous number of vegan options they have. And by ridiculous I mean a fuck ton. So many delicious vegan options, idly, cauliflower done right this time, and tons of different curried and spiced veggies to choose from. This place is delicious, and we filled our plates three times. Couldn't have had a better experience. read more

The highlight of our first time visit was the service. The wait personnel were super attentive. The entree servings were generous. Stay away from the lemon pickles. Naan were excellent. The ambiance was staid. The physical location in town results in cars coming down the hill shining headlights into the windows, which have no protection from the glare. Even the Indian take on post-dinner mints as you exit. Too bad the service was a shambles. Their wait-list system was a mess -- we asked them to call us, they said sure, we strolled, returned well after they said our table would be ready with no call, they'd given our table away, we waited again longer than they said we would. Then, had to ask twice for water refill after waiting 20 minutes with dry glasses, and all the while waiting on drink orders than they'd clearly forgotten when we asked after them. The food was good and and tasteful. Although a piece of my naan had 2 strips of plastic imbedded inside, but that itself was no big deal because we've owned restaurants and understand stuff happens. The issue was the way it was addressed. When this type of stuff happens I keep my voice low and just give them a heads up and for them to acknowlege it and reciprocate, usually with a, 'I'm sorry,' and if they are serious, a comp on the item or replacement. He didnt seem to understand when I strung up the naan by the plastic and said, 'I found a suprise in my naan. ' He simply smiled. Then my girlfriend said aloud: 'We found plastic in our naan.' He held the plate as I pulled out 2 pieces of plastic while he looked on.... Again, he just smiled and said, 'okay.' Now I would understand if he was not fluent in the English language, but plastic being pulled out of your restaurant's naan is universal sign language. Food was good. (Not as good as Naatiya in Bloomfield, CT) The service was good up until the end when this happened. I highly doubt he relayed to the kitchen and thats the upsetting part because they need to acknowledge and be aware. Mind as well note that the large plate they brought over had 2 bits of food stuck to it. I just scratched it off. No big deal but is now worth noting. Also, I've had better naan at Taste of India in Windsor, CT. Might give them a try again but probably stick to my go to; Naatiya in Bloomfield, CT, where 95% of lunch customers are Indian and it's ALWAYS FULL HOUSE. The owners are brothers they work the dining, kitchen, and deliveries and make small talk with customers and are very friendly. They also have 2 more restaurants, one in Framingham and NJ. read more

And this summer my nephew and his bride had their rehearsal dinner here for 55 people which included some Americans new to Indian food, many who love Indian food and were impressed, and some South Asians from several countries. The staff worked with us on a completely vegan menu with options for people who preferred mild to those who wanted beyond Vindaloo! The food was wonderful and each dish served (family style) was freshly prepared and delicious. Even my carnivore brother was more than satisfied by the variety of flavors and textures. I've eaten in Indian restaurants in London, New York and the other two Indian restaurants in Northampton. There is no question in my mind: Bombay Royale is the best. To be honest: tied with the very best, just one place in London. Their lunch buffet is an amazing deal--an interesting assortment of dishes and you can come back and refill your plate if you wish, all for $15. Dinner is more expensive, but every dish is carefully prepared, cooking exquisite, naan always warm, service courteous and efficient. If you like Indian food, go beyond the chicken tikka masala (which is fine) to some of the dishes from other parts of India, or even the "Anglo-Indian" specialties. We loved the spicy masala dosa which case with a fresh coconut and spicy chutneys and Sambar soup. It was excellent! We also got the Chana Masala and spinach dumplings which were delicious and flavorful. We would definitely come back! I am Indian. So I have street cred when it comes to Indian food. This is one of the best buffets I've had anywhere...even india! Wha Wha? Can you believe they had pani puri, Bhel puri, vada, idly, dosa, Chana bhatura, and North Indian curries? And salad and fruit that looked legit, but you can't use up precious stomach real estate on that. Amazing food, reasonable price. Lamb korma is outta this world, flavorful and creamy. Naan is average. Waitstaff is attentive but not intrusive, I really value that. Hooray for Indian food! I went to Bombay Royale in Northampton for their lunch buffet, today. Maybe it's because I haven't been to a buffet since before covid, or maybe the food really IS that good, but I would highly recommend this place! The restaurant is small, sort of plain, and has a nice view of the street. An unmistakable hit of curry, as you walk through the door, lets you know that you're gonna sweat! The buffet ($12.95) contained about 10-12 dishes, and a seperate desert table which held a few sweet treats. They give you a basket of bread (Naan) that is hot, fresh, delicious on it's own, and perfect for soaking up the different sauces from the buffet. Most of the dishes were vegetarian, as you would expect from an Indian buffet, but there were some great chicken selections to choose from, as well. The curries were very flavorful and the heat was just enough to make you sweat a little, and reach for the water glass. I wanted a Mango Lassi, but by the time my waiter came around, I was almost done, so I stuck with water. ( The dude kept my water glass full, and that was ok! ) All in all, a great experience, and I got to walk-off my lunch, touring Northampton, and that ain't a bad day! read more

It was okay. I was hoping to find a new Indian buffet spot, as I've recently moved and have been going for almost 30 years now. Having lived in a big city, I think I got spoiled with spicy choices and authentic breads (seemed to be white flour). A lot of the stuff in this region is bland. This place is REALLY good. We were travelling to Boston and had to meet a friend in Amherst and friends suggested this place in Northampton. Although we were really late for lunch we still did catch the lunch buffet. Everything tasted so damn good here. I personally loved the golgappa, tandoor chicken, chicken tikka masala and carrot halwa (dessert). I did miss on the gulab jamun as we were late for the buffet. The naan (flat bread) they provide is the best. They were extra soft and just melted in our mouths. If I happen to travel again this side I would definitely visit here again. read more

AMAZING. One of the best meals my partner of three years and I have ever had together. The buffet was overwhelming with fresh, bountiful choices. We went back twice and tried to have a bit of everything- there was simply not a bad dish to be found. The flavored in everything were balanced but had depth- oh man that mint chutney! Excellent South Indian food, right in Northampton. Rejoice!!! Seriously, one of the best masala dosa I have had in a LONG time. Perfectly crispy, slightly sour in the completely right way. You could just stop there, and I would still give this spot 5 stars. The next star imho is the naan - perfectly crispy and soft all at once. Just brilliant. Don't miss it. We also tried the dal makhani, aloo gobi, and vegetable curry. All were very good, but seriously, all you need is the dosa. The only downside is the service - everyone is perfectly nice, they just haven't quite gotten the rhythm down with keeping the water full and providing enough attention to patrons. Also, the waits can be brutal - pro tip, you can call in a reservation, do it, the food is absolutely worth it. read more

I've only ever eaten dinner here twice, but shockingly, this is one of the best and most attentive Indian restaurants I've ever eaten at. This was my first experience with Indian food and to say it was incredible is an understatement. *Staff is super duper friendly; went on a Saturday night, 30+ min wait but they were very accommodating at the bar as we waited. Paid attention to us, got us glasses for our BYOB bevs. Yes, it's BYOB (for now); go across the street to Provisions; you'll thank me later. *Food is aromatic, so so fresh and incredible. I can't wait to try more things on the menu *Despite being busy, they were on top of the water refilling *Food took a tad too long in my opinion but it was piping hot when it did come out and we didn't mind waiting a bit; it's obviously made to order and with care. Best Indian food in Northampton. Actually best restaurant in Northampton. Fresh spices/ingredients, lighter Indian fare that we can actually eat many times throughout the week (and we do!) ... The Masala DOSA is out of this world!!! The staff are all incredibly nice... But they do seem to get overwhelmed so be prepared to wait a bit on busier nights... FANTASTIC! A formidable newcomer to the Northampton food scene. Went tonight , and was warmly greeted, and promptly seated and served. The hospitable staff could not have been more welcoming to us (and tolerant of our kids!) The space previously occupied by Soo-Ra has had a complete refresh, with a new decor that is modern, with clean lines, and a hip, casual vibe. Definitely nice enough for an evening out, but comfortable enough to bring the kids too. Started dinner with the eggplant with tamarind - smartly prepared with lots of fresh, bright flavors (cilantro, sweet onion, mint, tamarind, cardamom) highlighting thinly sliced, eggplant crisps. Definitely a winner, and worth returning for. samosa chaat, and bhelpuri were also excellent, with generous portions, and similarly robust flavor profiles. For entrees, we tried to explore different realms of the very deep menu: 1. Indochinese - cauliflower with sweet chili sauce. delish. 2. South Indian - Masala Dosa - heaped with fresh mint/coconut chutney, tomato chutney, and great sambar (a tomato based spicy broth for dipping). This has been missing from the northampton indian scene forever, and again, this alone is worth going to try. 3. North Indian - Paneer masala, and dal makhani were vibrant in their flavors without the heaviness of too much cream that can sometimes subdue the fresh flavors that define authentic/homemade indian meals. 4. Special - Meen Molee - Mahi Mahi in turmeric coconut broth, with biryani, garlic naan, and a salad. ARE YOU KIDDING? It's just that good. Totally new to me, as a veteran indian food enthusiast, and i am wondering why this isn't ubiquitous at all Indian restaurants. Ok this place is amazing. I've ordered from here twice since opening. I have only ordered take-out but I VERY much look forward to dining in for the lunch buffet-- which is honestly the main factor that drew me to this place. The first time, I ordered the aloo gobi, lamb keema samosa, and garlic naan. The second time, I ordered the mattar paneer, vegetable samosa, and onion naan. Both times were incredibly good. I favor the vegetable samosa over the lamb, but both still delicious. The main dishes tasted so fresh and flavorful, and not overbearingly heavy and salty like a lot of other places. Take-out service was quick and friendly, and the restaurant has a really nice atmosphere (and looks so much brighter than what I remember SooRa looking like inside). I think it's also worth mentioning that, along with the "standard" complimentary chutneys, they decided to throw in papadums and a small dessert (first time was gulab jamun, second time was rice pudding). I don't know if this is simply for their grand opening, but I really hope this continues to be a thing because it's an awesome perk. With freshness of the food and the wonderful atmosphere of the restaurant combined, this place blows India House out of the water for me. I'll definitely be making my rounds here. read more

I could not have had a better time here. My wife and I have been complaining about the lack of a good Indian place for lunch in the area for years. Last year we discovered Pintu's lunch buffet in West Springfield. It's ok, but nothing to get excited about. And it's not close to us by any means. This place though, it might become my favorite Indian restaurant. We went today for the lunch buffet and were blown away. Buffets can be tricky, food can become "stale" fast as it sits out, but everything we had today seemed as fresh as it could be. Despite the small physical size of the buffet itself, there is plenty to choose from. I believe there are 8 dishes plus two salads and two (amazing) deserts. We loved EVERYTHING that we tried. The space is great too. Soo Ra, the previous occupier of the space was always so dark. Bombay Royale has lightened it up so much that even on a very gray day like today it didn't seem dark at all. If they can stay consistent with the great food and service I completely expect them to do extremely well and get very crowded very fast. read more

I was surprised to find out a third Indian restaurant was opening in Northampton, but a perusal of the menu showed a number of dishes you can't find at the other places, so we decided to check it out. Glad we did! We started with a delicious selection of Southern Indian appetizers including Medhu Vada, Isli, and Masala Dosa (which came with an assortment of chutneys and sambar) as well as the Bagari Shrimp (which the menu indicates is a "must try"... and we agree!) For our main courses, my wife had the Lamb Chettinadu which she enjoyed while I had what I feel is now my favorite Lamb Vindaloo. It was extremely flavorful and perfectly spicy. The menu has a spicier item on it; Phaal. I suspect that will only be for the bravest of spice lovers! The naan was good, although a little more crispy than I am used to. After our meal we were given small complimentary bowls of rice pudding. We hadn't ordered dessert because we were so stuffed, but this was good and then we waddled out of there as full as can be. We really appreciated the variety of foods from other parts of India that you can't find at the other local restaurants. The staff was very nice, welcoming, and attentive. Being a Tuesday, it was a fairly slow night so I can't comment on the overall atmosphere beyond it being rather quiet and pleasant. My husband and I came to Bombay Royale on the second night they were open. Northampton has needed a new Indian restaurant for a while, so we were excited to check this out. I should mention we visited their other restaurant in Lee, MA a few years ago and had an amazing experience. We arrived late, around 9:00PM. The staff was so friendly despite us being the last customers of the night. Service was great and the food was incredible. Just delicious. And, the prices are very reasonable. They give you rice pudding at the end of your meal (a nice touch) and when you ask for things to go, they even give you extra rice! We are really excited to have a great Indian option in Northampton and will definitely be back. We are looking forward to trying the lunch buffet, which according to their menu is only $9.95 during the week. This restaurant is going to be a great addition to Northampton! read more
