Great little place where we stopped for an early lunch today in NoHo! It's right in town conveniently next to the garage, and the prices are good too. I loved the decor and color palette of the restaurant itself, they painted the walls an almost-midnight blue and it looks fantastic, very chic and modern. They were only serving the buffet for lunch and I was surprised at the variety of non-standard dishes they had, it was really cool! Usually when you go to a buffet they have staples like tikka, curry, saag, etc. There was some of that, but other stuff as well like chili-battered fish, these yummy sauces and lentil fritters, and an elaborate display of samosas atop mounds of delicious potatoes. Everything was hot, fresh and presented beautifully. At the table they give you complimentary naan and dosas, the naan was unbelievable but I wasn't too impressed with the dosas, they didn't have much flavor. Service was quick and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. I noticed many others coming in as we were leaving, which means if we'd come later there would probably have been a wait, which is a sign that this is a great place! I have been here at least 3 times for buffet, and am being quite generous by giving a 2-star rating. It is pretty striking that the reviews are so high for this place, and actually a bit disturbing if I am being honest. Service is lackluster at best, and the food is underwhelming to say the least. The two positives I can report regarding buffet are (1) reasonable price and (2) I have not gotten physically ill by eating the food. But honestly it is among the worst buffets I have dined at in the state of MA. The only buffet I found worse was in Tucson, AZ. That one was absolutely horrific. An upscale Indian restaurant close to the bus station. The interior is a modern, open and large space. The service was very good; both servers were very patient with our large party consisting of 12 adults and 3 toddlers/babies. The servers were even able to deduce the couples/families and split the checks without even asking! The food is fantastic - I recommend all the curries, naan, and rice. That's all. Bombay Royale for a lunch buffet on weekend. They provide a huge variety of food. Ranging from Pani Puri, Bhel Puri, varieties of Salads, South Indian dishes like Medu Vada and Dosa, as starters. Main course options for both vegetarians and non vegetarians. There are four to five varieties of Indian desserts. You could order alcoholic beverages as well as non alcoholic ones such as Lassi. The food quality is well maintained. The food is not too spicy and not oily either! My personal favorites were Dosa, Veg Biryani,(I am a vegetarian! :P) Palak Chana and Naan and Rasmalai. I'm not normally compelled to write reviews about takeout, but I'm making an exception. This was some of the best Indian food I've ever had, ever. Last night we ordered the samosa chaat appetizer, naan, chicken tikka masala and vegetable tandoori. WOW. Each of these dishes were colorful, spiced perfectly and absolutely delicious. But what blew me away were the portions- they were so generous it was genuinely shocking. There will be leftovers for days! I was also impressed with how they packaged things. This was the first time ever in my life that I've had Indian takeout not spilling and dripping everywhere in the bag before it makes it to my plate. Score! Our order was ready in less then 30 minutes and they gave us several chutneys and sauces for the meal. I wish we could have seen the restaurant formally, so I guess that will happen next time. But if the restaurant experience is as wonderful as the takeout, we're looking at another 5 stars! Consider me a fan. read more

Northampton is known for its restaurants, but despite the abundance of options within a vibrant 5-block walk, there have been a handful of boxes left sitting unchecked for a while now -- among them, barbecue, elegant upscale Greek with a focus on fresh seafood, French, Latin, and an Indian buffet. Enter Bombay Royale and its fabulous lunch buffet, currently available six days a week (all but Monday, when the restaurant is closed). Bombay Royale is just a block off of Main Street, down the hill behind City Hall in the roundhouse plaza that is also home to the Peter Pan bus station and the Smithsonian Chowder House. The interior is elegant without being stuffy; tablecloths, comfortable leather chairs, nice mood lighting, and lots of windows for natural light. There is a central bar in place that looks like it will be a great gathering spot once they get their liquor license...and bonus, it has stay-a-while stools for those who wish to dine there (wide padded seats, full backs - thank you, Bombay!). The buffet begins with salads and an array of condiments and ends with dessert selections (on the day that we visited -- opening day -- these included kheer and gulab jamun). In between there were seven vegetarian offerings and four meat dishes, plus rice. Baskets of naan were served at the table. Everything I tried was outstanding. The heat and spice levels varied and hit a variety of notes, and I have to give a special shout out to the vegetable chettinadu; I'd never had that before and it was AMAZING! Highly recommend giving it some substantial real estate on your plate if it's available when you visit :) My only complaint about the food (and it's super minor) was that I found the kheer to be too sweet and cloying, but that's strictly a matter of personal preference and others may think it's perfect. The owner stopped by our table for a chat and said that their current plan was to have some standard favorites always available (things like chicken tikka masala, chana saag and cabbage poriyal), then rotate the others. He also mentioned an emphasis on southern Indian cuisine, which I'm very much looking forward to exploring. The staff was present, friendly and welcoming. Water glasses were refilled promptly, and everyone we encountered seemed happy and competent. We were definitely all smiles and this was a great experience from start to finish. If they have high chairs, I may go back today with my family! EDITED TO SHARE OUR TAKEOUT EXPERIENCE. They have takeout lunch boxes available (currently $7 for vegetarian, $8 for chicken, $9 for lamb). You select your main PLUS an additional vegetable side from the buffet. They package it for you along with rice, naan, utensils, etc. The containers look smallish but they're deceptive because the portions are actually huge. Like, really huge. Two of us split three lunch boxes so that we could sample as many dishes as possible, and my 1.5 lunch boxes are lasting me THREE FULL MEALS...lunch yesterday, dinner last night, lunch today. And when I say full meals, I mean totally loaded plates. Bonus if you snag the free 15-minute parking spot at the bottom of Crafts Ave ;-) There is nothing I don't love about this place! read more

A really really good Indian place with an expansive menu. We were nearby so we relied on Yelp for a good meal. This delivered (well, actually, we went there, but you know what I mean). The location is a bit odd -- literally in the same building as the Peter Pan bus terminal. But don't let that dissuade you, inside it was quite busy. Service was decent -- water refilled. Though a little absent at times -- can we get it wrapped up and a check? Those small things add up to a star. As for the food -- it was mostly a big winner. I liked a lamb/okra specialty that I hadn't had before. Sweet and spicy is a good combination. My dining companion and I loved her fish of the day special in a spinach sauce. Both had ample sauce with rice -- almost too much of it! The lamb samosa appetizer was good too; the vegetable fritters were almost fair food. Just didn't work but I'll chalk it up to us just ordering something we probably didn't want. Overall, we enjoyed the meal and wouldn't hesitate to come back. And big enough portions for leftovers! This place is fantastic. Me and the other Green Earth PC folks have been over here a few times a week since they opened. The lunch buffet ($9.99) is reasonably priced, and comes with Naan (some of the most delicious naan I have eaten). Everyone from our office loves the ability to wander over and get a quick premade lunch with lots of tasty options. They usually have a number of veggie options, as well as a number of meat options (including at least one non-chicken item for those who cant have poultry!). Most of the buffet is medium to mild spicy at most, so spice lovers should ask for hot sauce, or come back for dinner when they can get any spice level they want. Ah, the dinner menu. This is actually where I think this place really shines. They have more dinner menu items than almost any other Indian place I have been to. They are specifically a South Indian place, so they have the usual suspects, plus a bunch of South Indian specials and appetizers (mango and coconut sauces, etc). I ordered a really fun puffed rice street food style appetizer my first time there that I really enjoyed (see pictures). I would love to see another spicy option or two at the buffet - and maybe a little more rotation in the buffet appetizers. But honestly I have never been disappointed in the flavors and variety available. read more

Absolutely wonderful! Delicious, flavorful food. I think this is my favorite restaurant in Northampton so far! The Buffet lunch is a great deal, and the food is fresh and vibrant. The menu is extensive with many options to choose from, and regional dishes that you don't usually find in many Indian restaurants. The wait staff are always very attentive and helpful. I have enjoyed take-outs, as much as dining-in at this restaurant. One time I ordered the lunch box, as take-out which came with a healthy serving of Chicken Tikka Masala, rice, a Masala Curry and Naan, all for $8.00; I thought it was a great deal and so delicious! The order was prepared in 15 minutes, right on time too. I like that they offer the option to order and pay online, so all you do is go in and pick up your order. I have enjoyed his presence intelligence, and high quality service the past several years. As assistant manager, he ensures all guests are welcome to enjoy a high quality of delicious food served efficiently with good cheer. Also he has a wonderful sense of humor making the customers and workers at ease. He also welcomes farm fresh food each week including local heroes. This place exceeded expectations. We were driving back to CT from a weekend trip in Quebec and had a spontaneous lunch stop here based on Yelp and reviews. Lunch buffet was spectacular for under $12 per person. There were choices of appetizers, entrees and desserts. The ambiance was more than I'd ever ask for this cuisine. Bright with sunlight, clean where they used recyclable paper, and we were satisfied with the food options! It felt like high quality dining experience in where I'd like to have lunch with family and friends. We got multiple plates and left the place feeling like for the ability of food and price, this is the best Indian buffet we've ever had. They also have a bar section if you were there alone. They had great business and constant flow of people there. Parking wasn't a problem. Paid parking lot behind the restaurant. I'll be sure to make a stop back sometime soon! read more

I'll get right to it: this is by far the best Indian food I've had outside of India. I've been to Bombay Royale twice already, and it's probably a good thing I don't live close, or I'd spend half my paycheck there. Overlook the unusual location in the Peter Pan bus terminal building (bonus: there's plenty of safe and economical parking across the way); the restaurant is nicely designed, with a good amount of open space and lots of tables near the windows, and is exceptionally clean. The decor is minimalist, with walnut tables and chairs and cobalt glassware, and very few tchotchkes. We just went for lunch, and the buffet was terrific -- these folks are serious about their food. Diners get to fill up on at least 3 types of salad, 4 appetizers (the potato and pea mixture served with puffy bread, and the doughnut-shaped lentil fritters are standouts), 8 vegetarian entrees, 4 meat entrees (plus a plate of grilled meats, should you want to add them to other entrees), and 5 desserts. The server will also bring a bonus appetizer (ours was a crepelike bread wrapped around a potato-onion filling) and plain naan. Did I mention you get all of this for $15? If that isn't enough of a reason to try Bombay Royale, the veg biryani, spinach and chickpeas, and chettinadu shouldn't be missed. The latter is especially tasty, made with sauteed vegetables in an incredibly aromatic and flavorful sauce. I've never been much for Indian sweets, which are typically too sweet for my taste, but the fried dough in honey (and maybe a hint of rosewater?) Is a delight. Believe it or not, lunch isn't even Bombay Royale's best meal. That would be dinner, and I urge you to toss on your sneakers and run there now. If I beat you there, I will most definitely eat all the malai kofta. I've had this dish at just about every Indian restaurant I've eaten at, and it's never been this smooth and unforgettably sweet-savory-coconutty. As you might have guessed, I'm kind of fangirl-ing over Bombay Royale. Please give this place a try --they deserve to get all the accolades heaped on other area restaurants, many of which can't hold a candle to Bombay. read more

My friend and I came to this restaurant to try the Indian lunch buffet. The place was VERY full and had folks waiting at the door. We were seated at a table for two in a corner. First off we noticed they used real silverware yet covered the table with Kraft paper like some deli or clam shack. Under the paper was a real tablecloth. So I guess the Supper crowd gets that and the lunch crowd gets the paper for a 'tablecloth'. Despite the slight oddity the food was great. They had two salad dishes and about for side dishes some curries and to meat dishes. They also had two items off to the side for dessert. All the food seems well-prepared and was quite delicious. The only trouble on the buffet line was that they kept running out of full-size plates and only had smaller flat plates available for much of the time. I've never had the buffet (I will someday), but as for take-out and delivery, Bombay Royale has the best indian food the northampton area. I've tried the other nearby restaurants and Bombay Royale has the best chutneys, vindaloo, kormas, etc. They also offer several south indian dishes which other places do not. I've ever been disappointed. The food is expensive, but that's the case for all indian restaraunts around here; this place is the most worthwhile because it is the most delicious. I really had my heart set on a good Indian takeout for dinner tonite but sadly my local (Bombay Royale) had just closed their kitchen when I decided to order. So, intent on having my lamb biryani and tikka masala, I ordered from a competitor. Huge regret. HUGE. The competitor's biryani tastes like it came from a box of Rice-a-Roni (you know, the San Francisco treat). The lamb is really dry. The entire dish is so bland and dry that I can't eat it. Seriously, if I did not know it was supposed to be biryani I would never have guessed. And WTF is with this tikka masala? I don't think it is supposed to taste like this. I've never had tikka masala that tastes like this. I wasted 45$ on what was supposed to be a great close to a great day. I like my Friday night single man's supper, because it normally makes delicious, easy lunches for the week. But this? What do I do with this food? I do not want this food (and wasting food is sacrilege to me.) Moving forward, I will make sure to call before closing or just wait until the next day. No one in Northampton comes close to the taste and quality of Bombay Royale! read more

I would like to try this place for dinner. I was not impressed with the buffet, but then I don't like buffets. The first person to the buffet was clearly sick and coughed over all the food, so I didn't even taste the main entrees. This woman hadn't gone near desserts so I had rice pudding for lunch. It was good! But why do some people have so little regard for the health of others? I think this restaurant and others should recommend that people who have something contagious order from the menu or get someone else get their food. I'm giving it three stars because I imagine the food at dinner is good. But the other problem with buffets is that there is no spice to speak of in the food! I strongly suggest allowing people to order from the menu. I just won't go to a buffet! I gave it three stores because the food from the buffet, the one time I did try it, was all mildly spiced. We almost didn't even end up at this restaurant, which is an interesting story. Earlier this afternoon we decided to walk into the first indian restaurant we could find (which shall not be named). It was dimly lit and poorly decorated, with one lonely white dude eating alone. I immediately had a good feeling about this place. An overly cordial man dressed too nicely for the atmosphere offered us menus. We had been enticed into this gem by the faded lunch buffet sign, which must have been laminated and taped to the window several years prior. We asked if they had any vegan options, to which he hesitated, which was a great sign. He meekly showed us one tray of overcooked cauliflower with minimal seasoning. We made our way back to the table to "check out the menu" aka google a better place to eat, hopefully with dosas because I just found out that my boyfriend has never had one. And that's how we found Bombay Royale. This place is beautiful, clean, and it was pretty busy when we got there, which I think speaks for itself. When we asked if they had vegan options at the buffet they rolled their eyes, which showed a. how many times they get asked this question and b. the ridiculous number of vegan options they have. And by ridiculous I mean a fuck ton. So many delicious vegan options, idly, cauliflower done right this time, and tons of different curried and spiced veggies to choose from. The ambiance was staid. The physical location in town results in cars coming down the hill shining headlights into the windows, which have no protection from the glare. Their wait-list system was a mess -- we asked them to call us, they said sure, we strolled, returned well after they said our table would be ready with no call, they'd given our table away, we waited again longer than they said we would. Then, had to ask twice for water refill after waiting 20 minutes with dry glasses, and all the while waiting on drink orders than they'd clearly forgotten when we asked after them. The food was good and and tasteful. Although a piece of my naan had 2 strips of plastic imbedded inside, but that itself was no big deal because we've owned restaurants and understand stuff happens. The issue was the way it was addressed. When this type of stuff happens I keep my voice low and just give them a heads up and for them to acknowlege it and reciprocate, usually with a, 'I'm sorry,' and if they are serious, a comp on the item or replacement. He didnt seem to understand when I strung up the naan by the plastic and said, 'I found a suprise in my naan. ' He simply smiled. Then my girlfriend said aloud: 'We found plastic in our naan.' He held the plate as I pulled out 2 pieces of plastic while he looked on.... Again, he just smiled and said, 'okay.' Now I would understand if he was not fluent in the English language, but plastic being pulled out of your restaurant's naan is universal sign language. Food was good. (Not as good as Naatiya in Bloomfield, CT) The service was good up until the end when this happened. I highly doubt he relayed to the kitchen and thats the upsetting part because they need to acknowledge and be aware. Mind as well note that the large plate they brought over had 2 bits of food stuck to it. I just scratched it off. No big deal but is now worth noting. Also, I've had better naan at Taste of India in Windsor, CT. Might give them a try again but probably stick to my go to; Naatiya in Bloomfield, CT, where 95% of lunch customers are Indian and it's ALWAYS FULL HOUSE.
